But for YouTube in particular, if no one could make any money from the ads, if there were no ads, it would honestly be better content, both the educational and the entertainment stuff. It downloads.

They only go after other corporations. They tried to pick a fight with my startup and I told them to kiss my rear end. Goons were aghast, like "that's a company of almost entirely lawyers, don't gently caress with them" but I had my poo poo together with every PC that I gave to users fully inventoried including all installed software and keys. Adobe was auditing us for poo poo we paid for and I showed them the receipts, and they were like "that's not sufficient proof" and I'm like "gently caress you it is" and they're like "nuh uh". We got them to gently caress off but our lawyer and I probably used up half the billable hours ending their nuisance as the figure they were trying to extort us for.

edit: They even literally tried to audit our Adobe CC accounts, I'm like you stupid assholes, you can see they're subscriptions, they would cease working if we weren't current on them. It was really stupid like the BSA lawyers handed us off to an overseas support thing to audit us with, to save themselves money I guess but aggravate us more.

Years back, the company I work for had a disgruntled employee that called the BSA on us.

They contacted the owner's wife via email(small mom and pop machine shop) and sent a wall of scary text about audits and raid and poo poo.

I called them up and the person on the other end wanted to get remote access to my desktop so they could install some auditing software to look for other pirated apps and I told them that this was due to a disgruntled employee and also to gently caress off.

Never heard back form them, but maybe they figured the tiny company wasn't worth the effort.

Usenet was replaced by kazaa for good reasons. Things don't generally just get replaced by a worse version they get replaced by a better (at least in some ways) version that is then made worse as they try to make money from it.

Google until February of this year would let you post for free, and you didn't need to install anything:

It's almost like Google doesn't want anyone to get information if they can't stick more ads to it. I don't think there's any other free web-hosted readers now but I haven't looked too hard.

edit: commenters from that link are saying Google Groups was the main source of Usenet spam for decades and will improve without them. But now no normies will ever stumble upon Usenet again, so that seems like a grognard take.

I have 2nd and 3rd gen chromecasts on various dumb TVs. Whats the best way nowadays to get videos chromecasted without ads on my TVs?

Vanced / Revanced provide the cast icon but then doesnt find my chomecast devices. Not tried anything else yet.

I intentionally don't sign in to my google account via these apps that bypass ads due to my paranoia, and I'm not sure if this makes a difference.

also grab the ffmpeg and ffprobe package from the yt-dlp git page, i think it's linked in the usage instructions (maybe not). it's just like 3 exes youll never have to actually use, but if you but if you put them in the same folder as the yt-dlp exe it will do things like download youtube videos at 1080 etc.

extremely powerful command line tool, this is great for not just cool videos but also research and references that you want an offline copy of, poo poo that will likely get taken down soon, youtube docs and the like. and it's not just youtube, it can do like tubi movies for example

homebrew for mac
reevaluate your life choices if you�re using linux and don�t know how to do this already

step 2.) install yt-dlp and ffmpeg

Yeah, I have no desire to actually download a youtube video to watch it. If I can't stream it without their lovely ads, then I just won't watch it.

Speaking of enshittification... loving hard drive space. A single modern computer game can take well over 10% of my 1TB SSD's space now (if I had no OS or anything else on it whatsoever) so storage is a luxury again. On my laptop at least.
