The other big one was what.cd, I liked it a lot better because it was actually a well organized and curated library of music you can browse as opposed to the kinda flat "list of torrents you search through" thing I remember waffles being. It was such an awesome thing to find out about as a teen used to slumming it on the pirate bay.The ratio requirements were kinda tough, but a few years before its demise they changed it so that long-term seeders were still rewarded even if they didn't get much actual upload, and that's pretty much the norm now.

Yes such an awesome thing to find as a teen. I was defiantly a teen when i got my membership with what.cd and etc. I was definitely not in my mid 20s. Don't tell anyone that I was in my mid 20s in like 2008. :(

I guess I'm of two minds about this, because it's probably good in general to have some ignorant whales who pay for everything so smart people don't have to. But for YouTube in particular, if no one could make any money from the ads, if there were no ads, it would honestly be better content, both the educational and the entertainment stuff. We all secretly pine for a return to the wild west of internet content.

Yeah it hasn't changed for me in over 20 years. 100% honest.

Download a peer to peer client.

Go to pirate site and click on what you want.

It downloads.

It's far simpler than subscribing to any sort of streaming service.

Yeah, in the US that's usually the BSA run by Adobe and Microsoft, they are shakedown thugs who target piracy of software, not movies/music: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_Alliance

They only go after other corporations. They tried to pick a fight with my startup and I told them to kiss my rear end. Goons were aghast, like "that's a company of almost entirely lawyers, don't gently caress with them" but I had my poo poo together with every PC that I gave to users fully inventoried including all installed software and keys. Adobe was auditing us for poo poo we paid for and I showed them the receipts, and they were like "that's not sufficient proof" and I'm like "gently caress you it is" and they're like "nuh uh". We got them to gently caress off but our lawyer and I probably used up half the billable hours ending their nuisance as the figure they were trying to extort us for.

edit: They even literally tried to audit our Adobe CC accounts, I'm like you stupid assholes, you can see they're subscriptions, they would cease working if we weren't current on them. It was really stupid like the BSA lawyers handed us off to an overseas support thing to audit us with, to save themselves money I guess but aggravate us more.

Years back, the company I work for had a disgruntled employee that called the BSA on us.

They contacted the owner's wife via email(small mom and pop machine shop) and sent a wall of scary text about audits and raid and poo poo.

I called them up and the person on the other end wanted to get remote access to my desktop so they could install some auditing software to look for other pirated apps and I told them that this was due to a disgruntled employee and also to gently caress off.

Never heard back form them, but maybe they figured the tiny company wasn't worth the effort.

Usenet was replaced by kazaa for good reasons. Things don't generally just get replaced by a worse version they get replaced by a better (at least in some ways) version that is then made worse as they try to make money from it.

Not that it's a replacement but relatively recent software like plex and sonarr makes torrenting pretty convenient. so new tech isn't all bad.

Before websites, there were Usenet Newsgroups. You'd post a message to a topic group like alt.sex.stories.moderated and it would be replicated across various news servers for everyone across the globe to enjoy, much like our posts.

Then someone figured out that you could take files like music or movies, and chunk their data into smaller numbered parts to post as messages (1 out of 900, 2 out of 900, etc), and people could use programs to download all those messages in bulk and reassemble them into a complete file. Those are referred to as Binaries.

These are all still in use today. Instead of telling a Plex/Sonarr server to download content from torrents, you could instead pay for access to a newsgroup server which run around between $5-10 per month and Sonarr will fetch the content from there. There's generally no need to use a VPN with these as most newsgroup servers don't keep logs of what anyone downloads. It also has the advantage of everything downloading ludicrously fast (my friend's gigabit fiber can pretty much max out) so you don't have to deal with say a torrent with poor seeds.

I've actually been curious about this. I used to enjoy posting on Usenet and never really bothered about the binaries groups - are people still posting conversation there or is it just binaries now? Obviously I used it when your ISP would give you a Usenet server along with your e-mail service, but having to pay (presumably to get access to the binaries) I assume has stopped conversation.

Google until February of this year would let you post for free, and you didn't need to install anything:

https://www.pcmag.com/news/end-of-an-era-google-groups-to-drop-usenet-support

For now it's read-only until they completely shitcan it.

It's almost like Google doesn't want anyone to get information if they can't stick more ads to it. I don't think there's any other free web-hosted readers now but I haven't looked too hard.

edit: commenters from that link are saying Google Groups was the main source of Usenet spam for decades and will improve without them. But now no normies will ever stumble upon Usenet again, so that seems like a grognard take.

to use: yt-dlp.exe url

to update: yt-dlp.exe --update

here are some useful notes I refer to now and then. Mostly to make videos less onerous to deal with when they don't need to be 4K monsters:
code:
# Download the best video available but no better than 480p,
# or the worst video if there is no video under 480p
$ yt-dlp -f "bv*[height<=480]+ba/b[height<=480] / wv*+ba/w"

# Same as above, but for 1080p on videos that have nutso resolutions
$ yt-dlp.exe -f "bv*[height<=1080]+ba/b[height<=480] / wv*+ba/w"

download a specific time range
--download-sections REGEX
--download-sections "*93-111" (downloads from 93 seconds to 111 seconds)
--download-sections "*10:00.00-inf" (downloads from 10 minutes to end of video) untested

specify 480p
yt-dlp -S "res:480"

extract audio (may need ffmpeg.exe in same directory)
yt-dlp.exe --extract-audio --audio-format mp3

also grab the ffmpeg and ffprobe package from the yt-dlp git page, i think it's linked in the usage instructions (maybe not). it's just like 3 exes youll never have to actually use, but if you but if you put them in the same folder as the yt-dlp exe it will do things like download youtube videos at 1080 etc.

extremely powerful command line tool, this is great for not just cool videos but also research and references that you want an offline copy of, poo poo that will likely get taken down soon, youtube docs and the like. and it's not just youtube, it can do like tubi movies for example

skill issue

step 1.) install a package manager
  • chocolatey for windows
  • homebrew for mac
  • reevaluate your life choices if you’re using linux and don’t know how to do this already

step 2.) install yt-dlp and ffmpeg
  • windows:
    code:
choco install yt-dlp && choco install ffmpeg
  • mac:
    code:
brew install yt-dlp && brew install ffmpeg

step 3.) read the manual
  • if you’re too dumb to do that just type:
    code:
    yt-dlp "YOUTUBE URL GOES HERE"
  • for example:
    code:
    yt-dlp "youtube.com/watch?v=LmD_67RPVmQ"

step 4.) use your package manager to keep all your stuff updated
  • windows:
    code:
    choco upgrade all
  • mac:
    code:
    brew update && brew upgrade

it’s that easy. you just type this stuff into your terminal. video will download into whatever folder you run the command in
