This thread reminded me that I had a pile of ~20 CDs waiting to be ripped, so that's good.

The collapse of the online marketing industry would destroy a lot of things. Some of them might even be missed.

Everything else is a loss-leader side project run to support Google ads.

Probably. If they can force you into trying multiple things then you might run out of options or just give up in frustration. Either works for them.

Bonzo posted:I just bought a new (to me) nVidia Shield which is an Android TV box. The home screen features a wall of noise for free services I'll never use and also an ad for Kia. Now I could download a new launcher but Google blocks that now. I bought loving hardware and they are forcing me to use their interface to push me ads. I'm not even using their services, ,just playing locally over Plex. So why am I being forced to view ads? Oh no friend, you bought the hardware and a software license. Their ads being plastered all over it is a condition of accepting their software license, and the hardware is not meant for use with anything but the licensed software, so replacing it would void all warranties and could cause it to malfunction in a way that would cause permanent system damage. They're only removing the option from you to prevent that happening. Enjoy.

I think this is the first time I've had to think about my ad blocker in ~5 years, and (for me) it's stopped being a problem again already.

I saw some ads on youtube today (not my machine, no blocker installed), they were mostly for pseudoscience medical products and a range of "take our 8 session trading for beginners course at just $$$ and never work again!" shite.

I know torrents still exist, but it really feels like a technology of the past. Like you're getting stuff off Kazaa or something.

That's the point, I was torrenting things half a lifetime ago. There should have been exciting new tech introduced in the >decade since I stopped watching poo poo.
