It was originally pronounced but it got mangled pretty much immediately, which is why the Australian critter--with anglos encountered later--is just called "possum."

I call Virginia opossums "possums" because I live in North America and there isn't anything else that could be confused with that there. They got the Aaaaaa. Australia has the other pikachu possums, but they all got fancy names like the common brushtail and such so you can just say that. Brushtails possum.
