Moffat did the same thing when Smith came on board. Said it was Season 1. Tbh though, the numbering scheme that's been in use for NuWho (i.e. with Smith taking over in s05) kinda doesn't work now. Did Thirteen get three seasons or four? Tennant's "year of specials" always felt like basically a season to me anyway.

Haha this makes watching the shows in order a hassle, combined with the Christmas specials sometimes getting their own subsections or paired with prior seasons, especially on standard illegal streaming sites and back when they were on Amazon.

How is that show, with the caveat the viewer might prefer to never see disney marvel material ever again? Is it the kinda thing where it stands on its own or do you need to be all up ins marvelsphere to make sense of cross-events and cameos?

It's partially just overexposure, I liked many of the comics as a kid, more a Disney thing than a constitutional aversion to superpowers. Mentally I think I'm filing it away with Andor as shows that sound better than average and the kind of thing of interest to me -- but for a fair shot, to only watch if I'm in a mood amenable to the IP that it is part of. Plus Lokis of all sorts are usually a fun time.

watching Cold Blood and do they ever bring up the notion of a prophecy or legend or whatever to make people "ready to share" the planet again? I remember a recurring silurian character but can't remember if they revisited that 1,000 years later deal, or the two characters in hibernation w the rest of lizardland. and most future earths I remember didn't seem to have a shared planet one way or the other.

The NAs did, but pretty much everything else ignored this element of continuity. There's a classic Who episode that plays around with this slightly (Warriors of the Deep) but it mostly suggests that Earth Reptiles emerged and started a new cold war.

Cold Blood is such a garbage two parter though lmao. The doctor praises a child vivisectionist and offers to move the Reptile colony to the middle of the Outback because apparently it's abandoned, lmfao, gently caress you Chibnall/Moffat how about they go live in Slough instead.

Haha that negotiation was so bad. Even after that bit "well what benefit does it bring us anyway." Darkly british as gently caress but the show doesn't even seem to blink about it or notice, everyone's more mad at mom for killing alarya. And you know at some point they're going to reveal the doctor was born in the UK which will explain things like his "solution" of "just let us keep the place for 1,000 years and then check if we're bored of it yet."

Lol oh yeah the end too where Rory is casually erased from existence. Really annoyed me too when Amy is like don't reach in there and the doctor does "why not?" And then a minute later Rory is being light tentacled and he completely abandons him over it. So just totally confident sticking your hand in there can be fine even thought it's exactly where the existence erasers hang out... Come on y'all, a million better ways to reveal TARDIS debris is in there just have it burp some out lol

BbC iPlayer Audio Description takes some getting used to. They don't use a consistent person episode to episode, easy enough to get used to but the weird things is when they drip in AD, they first lower volume of show, speak, then return volume. ive been watching AD on shows for years and never experience anyone else doing that and it's pretty jarring, it happens before they speak as well so for a second it seems like you've had an audio glitch or gone underwater somehow.

edit: Also they asked me for a postcode which I gave a random one between london and birmingham and then they asked me if I had a TV licence. I said yes and they accepted it, didn't even ask to see my license number or anything lol.

edit: ahahaha brief spurt of tennant 'hello I'm the doctor' followed by 'NO LET IT GO WE'VE MOVED ON'

edit: II really don't think they needed the monster Flesh in this. I think a better reveal might've just been all of them being gangers and the newer models just not realizing it.

A Good Man Goes to War: Amy asks the Doctor if he has any kids or had any kids and he says no. But the last time I saw him have a kid, he said he had had kids before!

Khanstant
Apr 5, 2007
It was still odd if he believes Jenny to have died, because she asked him in past tense as well, like if he'd lost kids. If there was ever a time to relate to a close friend about the experience of suddenly finding out you have a child and then it apparently dies in some bizarre way, it was then.

Haha I skipped through the Corden episodes. Didn't hate the eps back then but can't stand him now so just wooshed on by.

10 gets a lot of grief for wanting to stick around, but I had forgotten how much 11 does the same thing. Almost worse in a way since he keeps doing fake outs involving Amy/Rory leaving too. Almost had the sense they were planning on changing doctors and companions and didn't. I assume he had his "oh ho she killed a fake doctorbototron" thing all planned out, but even knowing he doesn't go away, it feels like he's about to and then doesn't and it's holding in a sneeze.

Stormtrooper has got to be the worst name for a space marine in shiny white armor that shoots a red laserbolt. I get why they're actually called that and can think of a generic in-universe "troops storm in" type reasoning for it, but I just can't respect it. Even sticking to clouds and weather there are better names. Snowtroopers and Sandtroopers got it right.

Cyberman, now that's a good, proper name for evil troops that don't diminish the terror of their intrusion by dosing everyone with disappointment from a misleading group name.

Honestly kind of hosed up the Doctor leaves companions hanging by "dying" in front of them. There's absolutely no reason that a non-Dead version of that Doctor can't pop in and just carry on adventures until companion is ready to move on. I guess 11 sorta did it?

Tangent: my wish for a companion is someone who is an artist, unable to make anything of self-described value in the modern earth of AI and advertising and commercialism but ends up making some meaningful prices to specific weirdoes across space and time and of course these drawings help blow up the Blorgons in the end somehow.

Lol I love future Earth mentions "oh yeah such and such year the humanity all got bored and left in big rear end peanut butter jar city ships, oh yeah this is a retro earth buncha refugees came back to model life after the beanie babies era it's a religion to them, oh all the humans are psychos in murderballs living in a cold star at the end of the universe oh yeah yeah humans always stuck it out Earth to makensure the lizard people dont get another go at it"

For me, I'm not gonna have much issue with canon changes since most of the universe was actually destroyed, but in a way that absolutely nobody in the universe seems to give the slightest poo poo about. Therefore, the universe, see itself missing most of it's bit simply filled them with new universal STEAM cells which coalesce and fill the void with doctor who-y shaped realities that have now had always been there.

Essentially the old canon is all still there, in the pre-destroyed universe. But that poo poo got blown up by the sugar hill gang, it's over.

Canon in fiction is a dumb concept anyway. It only exists for people to get bent out of shape about, and for concepts of commercial ownership of settings.

Not at all. I get the kvetching over it can be exhausting, particularly if you just don't care, and it's fictional and doesn't have to be coherent or consistent. But it's a tool in the fictional toolbox and can be used to good or bad effects like any other. Relatively few properties even have the backlogs to play that much with canon one way or the other, and sometimes it's used to add richness to a universe, even retroactively add something to an old episode on a rewatch, and others it's just whatever, and sometimes they gently caress it up and you feel better disregarding the canon.

To me it's mostly a case of if I personally care or get something from a canon, if not, just scroll past it when it comes up because it doesn't apply to me in a way that also means I don't really have anything to say on the matter. Usually I find the creators themselves handle canon with mixed enough hands and approaches that being neither all-in or tuned-out detract much and it's more for idle internet conversations.

History is full of the worst people doing the most godawful things for the shittiest imaginable reasons. Doctor Who is not educational, it isn't about teaching us how life used to be in some place and time. It would be a very grim and bitter show if it were a real tour of history.

I don't think I'll be able to finish my rewatch on time, just starting Day of the Doctor. I love that the BBC iPlayer just has it in the episode list where it's meant to go! Definitely worth hopping on VPN to use iPlayer over my other options.

My one beef is they don't often seem to want to autoplay next episode and I have to refresh to get episode list back, since it just eventually hides itself?

I was kind of hoping the distributed metacrisis could mean they could stay as time-lord hybrids in case of emergency or something. I really hope RTD brings Jodie back for a 13 adventure because she really would shine in this kind of fun who action.

I loved this, I love Doctor Donna is back, coffee spill perfect. Sylvia was a surprise, obvious in hindsight but fun dynamic and I liked her and Donna getting along better with some natural combativeness.

I can't believe how big the TARDIS room was! Especially since I'm expecting a new one when 15 shows up soon. If it's that big I fully expect some episode where they have a huge crowd of folks onboard for some reason. I kind of miss the world of warcraft crystals but I appreciate the drastic change.

Infinitum posted:

Rose actress was real good though. Didn't understand why she didn't get a whirl in the TARDIS? But also Doctor Donna is back :3:

Historically, a Rose in the TARDIS doesn't end well so at the very least I get why Donna wasn't having it. I do expect she will end up onboard one way or the other now that the trip immediately went obviously wrong to the outside. Who knows how much they actually get to remember of technobabble stuff, Rose is also aware of UNIT at this point so there's always that.
