America produces a shitton of stuff. IIRC steel production by weight hasn't really dropped much compared to the 80s, but it's all heavily automated now with a fraction of the workforce and nobody knows anyone who works in a steel mill anymore so it seems like the industry just vanished into thin air. Lots of the produced steel is also some specialty steel now that is more complicated to make or higher up the value chain

Speaking of Goruck, I used to be involved as a third party in the shipping of these to end consumers. One time I noticed them sending one to Georgia the country, and the city was very American sounding, so I pointed it out to them as a probable error. They blew me off and said that’s what the order form said, and I’m not paid to correct their mistakes, so whatever. That bag flew back and forth from Europe to America for three months before it got delivered.

And here in North America there are some pretty sizable electric arc furnaces coming online in the next few years, displacing old basic oxygen production, which should help cut emissions a bunch too.

It was already a 10 year plan and COVID made it a 5 year plan, then J6 happened and they didn't have faith in the USA having a government in 5 years time so it became immediate since all the equipment was depreciated and they just decided to eat poo poo with the romania and wennebostel plants since they offloaded consumer anyway J6 spooked those guys bad as far as the viability of running a business in the US so they mostly stopped doing it. I don't blame them. MrQwerty fucked around with this message at 20:42 on Nov 7, 2023 |

I work for a company that makes dumb poo poo for haunted houses and escape rooms all over the world. It's tangently related to my college degree but the management sucks and we don't get paid enough. I'm probably going to quit and work at some other shite company soon.
