IIRC steel production by weight hasn't really dropped much compared to the 80s, but it's all heavily automated now with a fraction of the workforce and nobody knows anyone who works in a steel mill anymore so it seems like the industry just vanished into thin air. Lots of the produced steel is also some specialty steel now that is more complicated to make or higher up the value chain I mean, *I* know a few people that work in steel fabrication but that's because my high school was loving weird and my dad works in sourcing industrial machine parts so it's not like that's very typical.
