IIRC steel production by weight hasn't really dropped much compared to the 80s, but it's all heavily automated now with a fraction of the workforce and nobody knows anyone who works in a steel mill anymore so it seems like the industry just vanished into thin air. Lots of the produced steel is also some specialty steel now that is more complicated to make or higher up the value chain Yes! Cool things happening with steel lately. And here in North America there are some pretty sizable electric arc furnaces coming online in the next few years, displacing old basic oxygen production, which should help cut emissions a bunch too.
