My thirteen year old son has been asking me for some help in where to begin to learn how to animate on his computer. Unfortunately this has never been part of my skillset and I therefore humbly ask my fellow goons for some help in this matter. Are there any decent online (preferably video) sources to check out and if there are any inexpensive and easy to use software for him to try out?

I don't do animation, so take this with a grain of salt, but I follow a few people on twitter who create some very impressive animations with a simple thing called "Sticknodes". The app seems very user friendly and runs on mobile devices, but some of the creations I see people making with it are very impressive. Here's a guy with some really fluid stuff made in this: https://twitter.com/verynoobish

I consider a 00's style website generally a good sign: https://sticknodes.com/

Krita https://krita.org/en/ is an open source art program that has an animation component (https://docs.krita.org/en/user_manual/animation.html). My 8 year old kid played around with it a little so it's simple to get into. I think it's a little more on the traditional side.

It's not exactly cheap (unless.. you know :pirate:) but I didn't have a hard time picking up Adobe Flash Professional, now Adobe Animate, when I was around that age. I was using it to make stupid flash games with ActionScript at the time, but I know plenty of people use it for animation as well - supposedly that is it's primary use now.

I´d like to thank everyone for helping out. I´m going to check out the stuff that has been suggested in this thread and see what will work out for my son.

Thanks!
