Tony Khan's flaws as a booker.

1) Will fight tooth and nail to keep the plan in place even when it's akin to chewing gum for 11 hours straight and expecting it to retain its flavor.
2) WAY too loving fond of Adam Cole. Also too fond of Britt Baker but Britt was the only woman in the division remotely capable of portraying a character on the stick so I can't completely blame him for this one.
3) Gave up on booking shows in advance. You can change the matches if people get injured Tony. That's why we have 'card subject to change' on the tickets.
4) Gives MJF too much TV time which MJF then fills with either 'grabbing apples off the ground' cheap heat or wacky New Generation antics.
5) Is slowly giving way to more and more WWE-isms of which not booking shows in advance is one. (The TV monitors, taking away the ratings, invisible camera man segments). Not a huge deal but how far does this slide go.
6) Seems a bit reluctant to put gender-non conforming wrestlers on TV. He flushed Sonny Kiss down to TNA and has reduced Nyla Rose to a heater in a division that could frankly use more Nyla Rose and a little less everybody else in the division. (Would not be surprised if this was a WB mandate since Tony had no problem making Nyla women's champion in the opening months of Dynamite)
7) Giving hot rookie acts a winning streak out of the gate is great for maintaining their popularity and optics but is terrible for actually teaching them how to grow as performers. (specifically referring to Hook and Jade Cargill here).

An addendum to my previous statements:

8) Tony can't book a tournament for poo poo. The only good tournaments in the history of AEW were the TBS title tournament (though I will insist that Jade should not have won) and the women's international invitational. This year's Owen wasn't bad either just because the winner was a surprise (never mind how he won).

I'm actually amused that Tony tried to Make Jade by feeding her 80% of the women's division just for her to gently caress off to WWE the second her streak ended.

AEW has more great wrestlers now on the roster than they did back when the company started but somehow it feels like the wrestling matches they're having are less interesting. I would have enjoyed the Bucks vs Golden Jets match more if the build for it had not been so weak. Then MJF had a crazy match with Jay White and I could barely get into it because of how dumb the build was. Roderick Strong is now just the guy who yells Adam in a funny way. Toni Storm's a great wrestler with a completely nonsensical gimmick.

I think I started getting disillusioned in AEW when Statlander came back as a super babyface and won the title by cashing in on an already tired Jade.

That being said I'm pretty excited for the C2, I don't think they can gently caress that up.

There are 2 potential problems with the C2.

1) Failing to hype it ahead of time.
2) Tony will book all matches by order of position on the card with no upsets.

Like you have Andrade/Danielson/Kingston/Yuta/Garcia/Trent as one pod. The first 3 all go 3-0 against the second 3 instead of something like having Yuta go over Danielson to stir the 'Yuta isn't Danielson's first choice of protege and Yuta knows it' pot. or even having Trent upset Kingston just so Trent can win a singles match ever.

I figured that Britt was finally taking time off to heal. She had been wrestling hurt for awhile and had lost all the zing to what passes for her fastball, both in and out of the ring.
Either way; haven't much missed her. Even if she's only one of a very small handful of women who can carry an actual story.

AEW tried to make Jade a star. It worked. In a sense.
Other than that: I just don't think there are any women in AEW that can be made stars on the level of Rhea or Mercedes. There is a critical deficit of charisma and ability to carry ones self outside of the ring.
Outside of Hayter maybe, but she got hella injured.

Because the best revenge is living well. Quite literally in this case.
Wardlow HATES that MJF is living well as revenge for getting his rear end beat.

I appreciate Wardlow being the one person in pro wrestling who doesn't have goldfish brain and doesn't stop hating somebody just because their program is over.

Upon dying he approached the pearly gates, where a man in a brown robe awaited him in the distance. When he got close the man in the robe was once again, the bear with sharks for arms who again mauled him.

That immediately came to mind when I first saw the 'Cody leaves his boots in the ring' segment.

Even then it works for his 'weaselly little poo poo that is even called such by his own teammates' thing.

The women's division has this problem where most of the women wrestle really same-y (of course there are deviations but not crazy ones) and it makes the matches feel very samey.
Deeb and Deona are mat specialists but they need opponents who are the same because neither is Brian Danielson. Also Deeb is only good when she wrestles heel and puts some brutality into her grappling. Right now she is not doing that.
Statlander is a power wrestler but even then she's not exactly transcendent at it. Jade had more impressive power spots, and I say this as somebody who was a vocal Jade critic.
High fliers? Nope. Real down and dirty brawlers like Moxley? No. Well sorta but they need plunder to reach that level.
Like, Toni Storm might be one of the better women's wrestlers in the division but it's like comparing a B- to a B.
And almost none of them make up for it with their personalities. That's a big reason why the division revolved around Britt Baker and Jade for so long. Now Toni Storm has found something that works but that's pretty much it.
Maybe this is just me. I like my wrestlers to do 3 things: Fly, Talk and Bleed (and toss people around if they're really good at it). And the women's division does not give me much of that at all.

CombineThresher posted:

This has more to do with how female wrestlers are trained and agented than anything else. Hell, plenty of women in AEW want to do more brawling, but for some reason most of their matches are nothing but spinny reversal sequences they can't pull off well. This is true of most other women's divisions, too; it's not like WWE boasts a variety of styles or gimmicks either.

Some progress have been made, though. Jamie, Toni, Emi, and Shida can and have put on good brawls, Kris and Willow get to do cool power stuff, and they have Aminata and Mariah May wrestling snug and laying their poo poo in. They just need more than 8 minutes (half of which is in picture-in-picture) to do it.

I am not impressed by Willow's power stuff and it hurts me to say that.
As far as longer matches matches I don't disagree but I'm remembering Shida vs Ryo Miuzaki and thinking it went 20 minutes and the last 5 was the 'pull out the entire bag of tricks to get the pin' sequence. Which is usually the best part of a wrestling match but it felt like Shida just didn't have anything else so she kept going back to the buzzsaw kick like Kenny doing 200 V-Triggers. (I love Kenny but I consider this the sole weak point in his in-ring game).
The women in AEW's women's division are good. I don't think there are any explicitly weak workers (except Madison Rayne who barely wrestlers). But they are good->very good performers in a company with the best men's division the USA, possibly the world has ever constructed and it's hard to take time from them.

Though I hear Lady Frost is a former gymnast who can do some cool flippy poo poo. Hopefully she'll put that package together because the division needs something like that.
