has anyone made a list of all the good boss fights in first person shooters? because i feel like you could include every shooter ever made and the list would be maybe 15 items long at best

the Metroids Prime
Turbo Overkill
Black Mesa
some of the Serious Sams, maybe
Daud in Dishonored
Painkiller

Cultic doesn't have the best boss fights, but the Asylum Grounds are really good at making you feel like a one man army

Finished the main story of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth yesterday.

Some of the substory writing in Honolulu was kind of weak and a couple of the songs were surprisingly bad, but IW is still a good Yakuza game which means it's top tier gaming. Once I've finished unlocking all the ultimate Sujimons and clearing the big dungeons it's back to Dondoko Island for me; I need to figure out where I can put all my garbage dumps to make room for the new porn shop

First of all: Who the gently caress beat this game without a walkthrough? There's almost no hints or suggestions as to what you're supposed to be doing. Most of the puzzles don't have any connection to each other which means that often when you do a thing to get a thing, even once achieving the thing, there's no real indication why you just did the thing.

i actually played doom 1 and 2 for the first time recently since i grew up in one of them "playing the demon killing game will make you worship satan" households and they unequivocally hold up so many years later. it's one of the most primal FPS gameplay loops you can have, but the combination of the highly diverse enemy cast and the labyrinthine layouts adds a lot of meat to the bone and gives it genuine timelessness

what i liked the most about doom 2 was how much personality there is infused in each level. it's kind of the perfect creative environment: a bunch of young dudes who tasted pioneering success are all now trying to one-up the other ones with their map designs, each of them trying to make something bigger and more clever than their contemporaries. it's something you don't really see in modern FPSes anymore, given the huge teams of people tasked with stitching everything together, and there's something to be said for that loss of auteur energy in a lot of modern productions

play Doom 64 next

you won't be too lost if you don't play Dooms 3 through 63 first

The game suffers a bit at the end, with Hell episode being a retread of earlier episodes (but spookier!) and featuring some really tanky enemies. The game is really easy, at least on Normal, and provides enough opportunities to upgrade your ammo cap as well as spells that give you ammo, so by the end I was just running around with what's effectively an infinite rocket launcher. Fun, but gets a little stale after your 10th room of tanky enemies who have three forms.

Flak Cannon can kill a lot of these enemies without letting them change form
