Are you like me, and you like and/or remember watching a bunch of psychedelic funk-laden costume puppet shows and dinosaur alien adventures from the late 1960's and mid-seventies as a child (or adult)? Well Marty Krofft just died, and with him we bury a whole genre of wild-rear end TV from a bygone era.

From what I gather,

The Krofft brothers smoked a bunch of weed and did a bunch of psychedelics at Hanna-Barbera while they were doing this poo poo:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMl6HnhFFIA

Which leads into them making a show called H.R. Pufnstuf, a story about a boy lured to a magical island by an enchanted boat and then he just hangs out with a dude whose name is smoke weed and they have magical musical adventures:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWOOfSuDwQc
which begat a wild-rear end movie that included Mama Cass singing a song as a witch yes that is a nazi rat
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7rAaYFFeZk

Then their "Altered States"-level psychedelic use leads to a science-fiction cro-magnon time travel dinosaur show? Nickelodeon remade it in the nineties and then they did the Will Ferrell movie but none of that really caught on and the old poo poo's hard to find.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFo48PouPmE

It's not a very good history because I'm not super familiar with them as a whole, but I watched their stuff growing up as a kid whenever my parents found it and pretty much said "lol watch this it's wild" ages 3-5.

I also thought that Marty Krofft deserved a better thread than the one he got.

Speaking of, Mr Qwerty you might like to know that I had like a 4 episode guest role on this public access "variety" show in Albq circa 1994. I performed either in drag, or a suit and tie as the bad office guy.

There was a recurring puppet skit. It wasn't good.

Hell yeah Meet the Feebles is great

Phallus in Wonderland is a very good psychedelic puppet/costume concept album movie that retells, in a very GWAR way, how cops took the Cuttlefish of Cthulu away before their show in Charlotte, arrested Dave Brockie for obscenity and banned him from NC for a year.

No, I like my hat, thanks.
RIP Marty Kroft, who brought much Joy to my life as an adolescent lad.

Footage from the Bread and Puppet Theater
Their actual shows are mostly sophomoric political screeds, but some of the puppetry is cool.

Comedy is a good format for puppetry. So is tragedy.

The SG-1 puppets are some of the highest tragedy the show produced.

What a bargain!

Absolutely, if Eureka's Castle and Fraggle Rock count.

e: gently caress, Sesame Street wigged me out at times, too.

Henson can be a part of this thread if Wonder Showzen is, Dark Crystal is cool as poo poo and the old coffee commercials are pretty subversive. He was a big part of making this stuff acceptable to a mainstream audience in the first place, and Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock were big parts of why I got into this stuff.

also he did Ghost of Faffner Hall and that is extremely weird musical psychedelic puppet poo poo that I like a lot so yeah c'mon in Jim

honestly, gently caress it, the Marty Krofft Memorial Thread is also the official GBS thread for puppet/costume work and stop-motion animation. I feel like he'd think that was pretty rad.

Can't mention jim henson without bringing up The Storyteller, that show was both vaguely creepy and really good.

This thread's like staring into the void.
Paperhand Puppet Intervention definitely qualifies. Been to a few of their shows and even the most basic of the smaller puppets show amazing creativity. The amount of choreography they can pull off even when there are puppets the size of the stage is impressive as well. It also helps the trippiness that the group themselves is all self taught etc rather than some big studio. They also write their own songs for each years performances.

I never really saw any of The Storyteller but I've seen a lot of stuff about it. I need to sit down and watch it some time.

On the stop-motion side of things, Mad God was really, really good. Absolute masterpiece of animation from start to finish. The story is weird and hard to piece together but that's the whole point of the movie. Just sit back and watch some really wild physical animation with practical effects happen.
Skinner's movie Shrine of Abominations is supposed to come out sometime in the spring, that should be pretty cool.
