Enjoying this era of cars as escape rooms, where there's no idling motor to wake up the neighbours in the morning but they still get bothered by Richard O Brien playing his harmonica while your keyhole defrosts

The way these people can pose for a photo with a gentle friendly smile after going on record saying the most infuriatingly fashy poo poo will never stop enraging me.

I know. I wish they could be made to see the consequences of their words until the taste of what they are saying makes them choke.

I was in the background of a shot where they were filming at a farm down my way, a few years ago. Also got stopped in the street when I was about 12 by someone reporting for one of those godawful Janet Street Porter lunchtime vehicles, to be asked "are young people embarassed about buying contraceptives" which I'd have been less embarassed about if there wasn't a camera in my face and my fundamentalist Christian mum wasn't just off camera scowling. I told them not to use the footage and they bloody well did as well. Bah

The only other time I was on camera was being pulled in for a run-across-camera shot at the hotel I was staying at one holiday in France, for what we were told was a soap opera. They did about 7 takes of a car pulling up and a man and a woman getting out and going into the lobby. The odd thing about that one was that they were ridiculously cagey about the name of the production, and the hotel had a fake sign put up on the front of a different hotel just down the road. Only registered years later that it was probably a porno and they were trying to offload reputational fallout onto a rival.

The last election showed me that "hold your nose and vote for Labour" is not a thing that a lot of Sensible Centrists are prepared to do and now their guy is in charge I don't feel inclined to do the same for them. It's petulant, but sow, reap, and gently caress you.

Whatever I vote for in this ward is wasted anyway, so I'm going to spoil my ballot, we're planning on moving up north anyway at some point so hopefully I'll be in a better place to do something more constructive next time and there's always the possibility that if it all goes completely to hell I will ride the rest of my privilege to emigrate somewhere with a functional left wing government and a sane attitude to LGBT+ rights assuming one actually exists.

What privilege is that? Got a euro passport or spouse? Or something else?

My spouse does have dual irish citizenship although in practice I don't think that would necessarily make it a lot easier because of some other things.

I just meant even theoretically being able to skip out on some persecution by throwing money at the problem, even if it's by doing something drastic like emigrating, this is something not a lot of people have and I'm mindful of that when I think about voting.

I had a play with the music generating AI just for fun, expecting nothing just shitposting in a genre I never listen to, and what it came back with SO good my first thought was "this is clearly copied from somewhere, I want to know what so I can hear more of it". And this is the thing, there's no way to query these things, there's no audit trail. MAYBE it's cobbled together a bunch of ideas in a way that's produced something truly unique. MAYBE it's one of its training data tracks with the bare minimum of identifying details sawn off. No way of telling, even if the companies running the things would release their training data, which they aren't except under oath in court, nobody understands what the tech does enough to do the rest of the work and say "hey computer, who are you ripping off here".

Edit: The point being, until these things have that very basic addition you have to assume that at the very least EVERYTHING that comes out of them is tainted by plagiarism of a source that didn't want to be in the training data, and if you're at all creative there's no ethical way to make it part of your workflow. I get the Star Trek appeal of "computer, entertain me" as an end user, but there's no way of monetising that, and the second you do anything creative or commercial or both with it it's just ethical poison, really.

You don't have to pay the estate of Mozart but you might have to pay the record company of the orchestra that made the recording, if they can discover that you used their version.

I'm not sure if it's still the case, but there were many ATOS testing centres for the disabled back in the day that had no wheelchair access, no lift, and the testing centres were located on the upper level floors. There was no way to call someone down from the centre and no way to contact them via telephone, despite them watching your every move via CCTV from the moment you entered the car park as they looked for evidence to refuse your claim.

I certainly remember this happening to me back in the day, and that was back before they REALLY started to lean in to that kind of behaviour.

I don't know how we unwind this kind of deliberate, enthusiastic cruelty... it feels like as I've got older a few generations have gone by and it's become expected and "just how things are done", as evil as that is. Starmer and co pose no challenge to it obviously but even back in Corbyn's time it felt like there was never the response to it that there ought to have been. The moment someone pushes back on any of it it feels like there's a stock response about "benefit fraud" trotted out and it stuns the other side in to an equivocating "well obviously we need to blah blah blah" position.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong. But it feels like a lot of the politician class are so afraid of being tagged as "ranting lefties" they're afraid of treating this and other problems with the contempt they deserve, and nothing is going to actually budge until somebody breaks the spell.

Like, the right-wing playbook at the moment is to say/do something outrageous and then turn and point and say "look how triggered the left are" when we respond. In the political class this seems to manifest as a paralysing rhetorical trap in the instances where they're of course not broadly supportive of the same policies which I accept with Starmer et al a lot of the times they are.

There needs to be a way to make behaving like sociopathic cunts the outrageous thing again and not the responding to what they say and do. Starting with a leader that feels like they can say, yes, this makes me angry, as it should, why doesn't it make YOU angry?

Been going to see a lot of queer theatre lately and they're really good for content warnings. Take all of 30 seconds in the pre-show bit and sometimes get worked into the opening in a creative way. They cost you absolutely nothing as an audience member, just wild people have a problem with them. Like if you're sitting there going "ugh I don't need this" then congratulations, they're not there for you. It's like being mad at step-free access because you have fully working legs.

The Bulger murder occurred in 1993 when social media wasn't a thing at all. I'm sure there are plenty of other examples around. "Evil" exists whether it is instigated by some satanic being or a result of social pressures.

True, and you're not the first person I've heard mention the Bulger case in comparison to Brianna Ghey. But the press at the time really went heavily into that the murderers were directly copying the violence of the Chucky films and there was a whole cross media campaign to get "video nasties" taken off the shelves. I think that's slipped out of memory, even the latest episode of TrashFuture forgets this when they're contrasting the two. Yeah there was no social media but there was still a "corrupting influence" that had to account for why someone should do something so terrible because it's easier to accept that than that sometimes people just do grotesquely evil poo poo.

Esther Ghey is mourning and I worry she's being latched onto by a press and politicians that would rather look anywhere than themselves and the transphobia they've been pushing as the answer, but like, I'm not going to be mad at her for it, frankly in that situation I'd look for comfort wherever I could find it. We absolutely shouldn't let the press and the politicians off the hook though

I like it when the motion smoothing and adaptive brightness poo poo is in some counter intuitive place that takes ages to find and disable and every few weeks the iPlayer app crashes the TV and it forgets all its settings and you have to do it all over again. Wait no, I hate that.

Not replacing it though I only upgrade these things when they break, and "technically it never really worked" doesn't count

There are very problematic opinions among some observant Muslim communities, but those same opinions also exist within some observant Christian communities, and more to the point within Conservative party members as a group.

There's this real mindset amongst your middle, upper middle Tories that "people wanting to be stricter than us" in society is scary and a threat to "our" way of life but then "people wanting to be more permissive than us" in society is also scary and a threat to "our" way of life. You think that'd tip them off to self reflect a bit about what "our" way of life actually is but I guess having the money and the access to power helps cushion you from ever having to think that hard and it's telling that for all the bluster you've ever really seen them panic was when someone was threatening to even those things up a bit in 2019.
