Actually, the first culture war was pretty weird because it was zero shhh! The innocent children can not know such things! Literally no one complained about Mrs. Doubtfire, it was all AIDS all the time, The Birdcage was like, not particularly controversial and you couldn't turn on a TV to mainstream broadcasts with your children in the room without some graphic description of some Mapplethorpe exhibit and how the NEA was funding Piss Christ.

Honestly, growing up as a gay child in the 80s I constantly feel whiplash about how we are doing the exact same culture war but the outrage is so much more palpable over like some random drag queen like just existing and there were like exhibits of hardcore homoerotic pornographic art and the mainstream was like, well, I'm not saying I like it, but this rear end in a top hat on TV needs to calm the gently caress down about it while parents casually explained what a blowjob it to their 8 year olds.

I think the good thing is the majority/plurality of america hate the hard right culture poo poo and the GOP has gone so far up its own rear end with poo poo that it no longer gets the people they need to agree with it. this isnt the 90s and 00s where chuds and blue dogs and clinton agreed about video games bad or the tipper gore 80s area. its alot more of a partisan divide with culture war poo poo and america is alot more socially liberal.

I think though at least in the mainstream, being non-gender conforming, including kids, was like, kind of normal? Like, I think parents didn't LOVE it because they knew it was a sign that their kid might be gay, but like, we were still allowed to like play with barbies. I had to verify with Wikipedia, but RuPaul and the rest of the club kid scene was viewed as cultural curiosities in the mainstream, not an existential threat to our very existence.

I am weirdly opitomistic about some poo poo and not about others but thats for other threads. My thing is more just i miss their being magic to the world. i dont mean hope or politics or etc, i just mean like a sense of wonder of things older then ourselves like gods or mythical creatures or santa or super heroes or unicorns or dragons. like yeah their is plenty of beauty in nature and peaople and etc but gently caress id love to just go outside and see like magical creature or some poo poo. like magic being real and its not just weird dumb bullshit for emo girls.

I mean, if a unicorn was real and a whale wasn’t, you’d be all “stupid horse with a horn, I want there to be a real whale”

true. I think its more because alot of fiction now a days kinda harry potterfies magic by making waky and mundane, nothing can have wonder anymore. everything has to have a loving "movie/book/game/etc explained" poo poo, nothing can just be. its why i never became religious because its either wierd lore fights or dumbshit literalism. ill give yall advice, never read the last unicorn for the first time when your having a depressing episode, that poo poo sticks with you way harder in weird ways.

I don't think it was really lifting any new stage curtains to reveal some novel backroom cynicism - at my current age, but I news of Rich Kyanka's out of the blue suicide, and subsequently his mother's, kinda dimmed the colors on the reality channel that tiny bit further.

First time I saw wrestling on TV as a little kid my dad immediately said "It's fake."

Which is really weird in retrospect because later I'd learn he loved watching wrestling when he was a kid and kayfabe was very alive back then.

I would say that 3O should volunteer for the trevor project or trans lifeline and find out, but I think that he would just derail every conversation to talk about smart lights

Oh wait that does ring a bell :( Society needs a narcissist nose spray or something to stop this sort of madness from going too far.
