I watched Tormented and it was exactly as expected with an extra splash of gore. Wasn't terribly special so I'll have to see what the other ones offer

First matchup: sister death was the only new one for me to watch. Not bad, a little slow at times but some neat use of imagery and the finale was pretty sick. Gunna go with Dead Heat here tho, just a dumb flick that I like too much.

I think imma go with torture Dungeon as well.

I'm kinda sad Torture Dungeon didn't win because I wanted an excuse to see if the so bad its bad but also kind of good sticks with other Milligan movies. Looks like I'm on my own for that adventure.

Looking forward to Blair Witch because I've seen polarized reviews about it. It can't be as bad as the second one, can it? God I hope not!

It was giving me an excuse to work my way through the Andy milligan box set I have, now I have to do that on my own!

I'm going with Transfiguration and Blair Witch.

I watched Baby Sitter's Guide to Monster Hunting and Transfiguration on the same day and uh yeah what a pairing lol

Transfiguration was a lot better than I was expecting and it was a great take on a Martin style vampire story.

God drat I feel creeped out by The Transfiguration. I think it was the better movie, but good grief what a psychopath. I wasn't expecting it to be that "real".

Yeah it was quite the trip

I'm almost tempted to vote for Event Horizon since you used a quote from me on it, but NoES is all time fav of mine so I'm going that way.

MacheteZombie

I went with NoES and 28 Weeks. It was a fairly easy vote for me truth be told, but I get the division on NoES vs Event Horizon. That said, yall better make the right choice.

The Innkeepers gets my vote in the other match, because as fun as it was seeing John C. Reilly and Willem Dafoe as kooky vampires, and to have a YA fiction film adaptation that was willing to let its characters swear... CdF:TVA was too busy trying to set things up for sequels to really have much substance of its own, beyond the basic plot beats. Good cast, always glad to see Orlando Jones show up in something, but it couldn't hold a candle to the focused build of The Innkeepers.

Echoing this.

The problem with Funny Games is that Haneke fundamentally misunderstands what attracts most people to horror movies, so he's shoving your nose in it saying "Is this what you people want?" But he's too pompous to realize that his entire filmography is just making the same brand of misery porn he accuses mainstream horror of committing.

It's pretty funny how much Haneke ruins his own movies for me by being such an rear end in a top hat. I like Funny Games but seeing his quotes on why he made it makes me not want to!

It is not fair at all to compare Koko-Di to Funny Games. It's a more hopeful film, is rarely graphic and is never rubbing your nose in the violence. It's only real comparable is a bit of meta narrative.

It was pretty cool. Better than I was expecting for sure. Some cool visuals with the puppet show, and a really neat take on how grief torments people.

The best part of Grotesque is seeing the actor who plays Kudo Jin in the Senritsu Kaiki File series playing a very different kind of rear end in a top hat.

I didn’t like the movie, but as far as imitating Western torture porn goes, Koji hit the mark, and maybe even outdid the originators. It’s kind of like Funny Games if the director was really into going for broke with gore instead of trying to castigate the audience for imagined failings of taste and/or morality.

It really is a rather smart movie for also being just incredibly violent and messed up.

Philthy posted:

I made it half way. That's about as far as I'll go today. Hooo boy.

I dont blame ya for needing a break. I found the end to be worth the misery to get there.

im not sure yet if i'll have time for dracula and son so i'll abstain there if i dont, but in the other matchup im going fulci.

its probably (definitely) not as well made as hobo, but its got fulci's weirdness and is definitely a unique experience. The dad being this hated piece of crap person and only his daughter loves him is such a crazy choice for a story of her solving his murder. most of the characters are pretty unlikeable though, there's a couple fun red herrings, and i thought the corpse decaying was badass.
