did we ever find out why Payton was screaming at Russ last night?

I think going back and watching the highlights, the Broncos snapped the ball pretty quickly on consecutive plays, and both of them probably should have been challenged. The game was close enough at that point that there was no real reason to rush to the line of scrimmage and get a play off, so I'm not sure why the Broncos were so hurried. I'm guessing that''s why Payton was so pissed, Russ took the challenge off the table for basically no reason.

Perna of that's good sports on YouTube did his review of the game and decided that even as a Denver fan neither of those challenges would have won, the first because you can't ever see the ball in replays and the second because he really was down inches from the line. And also the offside was super legit, it wasn't even close, the TV broadcast just didn't show the angle where the guard was lined up way offside.

Payton is just an rear end in a top hat.

It's kind of besides the point, which is why is Russ snapping the ball with 20 seconds on the play clock there? Give the video assistants some time to look at the play. It's just not smart football in that situation, and he did it on back-to-back plays.

the head coach and play caller probably has some influence on when the ball is snapped

But if you’re gonna run a play it is smart football to get to the line quick instead of giving the defense a nice breather and time to line up correctly

So here's a weird thing.

Colts suspended Tony Brown and Isaiah McKenzie for three games for conduct detrimental to the team but nobody knows exactly what they did. There are rumors it's because they went hunting and killed protected birds on the trip. I think it's probably because they complained about playing time but nobody knows for sure yet.

The first one was pure "whatever this is called on the field, that's what it's staying.", I thought it was kinda silly that Perna said that the Broncos couldn't challenge it because you can't see the ball but also said they should call it a TD so you can take a look at it. That "well, we'll call it a TD/turnover so we can see what happened, oop, there's no conclusive angle, call on the field stands." stuff is pretty annoying and has happened a little too much this year for my liking.

The second run, he was definitely down short. The offsides was technically correct but there's absolutely no loving way they call it if Reid and Mahomes aren't complaining about it and that really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Basically never calling offensive offsides, then just calling it on the chintziest poo poo imaginable, golly gee, I wonder if Reid and Mahomes had a point.

They don't, toney was blatantly offsides

The fact that he was offsides isn't the point. There are a hundred examples of receivers being offsides and it not being called, because they don't do that. Like there were several examples of it not being called since then.

The opposing teams that didn't line up in front of the ball.

I'm not gonna feel sympathy for offsides penalties, which are very easy to determine, when the underthrown DPI bait still exists and is much more opinion based and open to ref bias.

I don't know what the argument is against calling it. Remove the offensive offsides penalty entirely? Don't call it in the final two minutes?

The flag was thrown well before the play went for a touchdown; it's not like the refs knew it would be a pivotal play.

Apparently WRs should just be allowed to line up wherever, or alternatively they should stop the whole game and the ref can do the "back it up" signal until the WR is compliant, and then restart the game.

Especially when it's extremely blatant. They let a guy line up offsides by a foot, so that means they have to give a full yard cushion now.
