I've always enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, ever since I was a kid. I'm far from an expert on doing them, but here's some helpful links and tips!

1. Brands

When covid started, puzzles became quite popular, and now there are some REALLY nice puzzles coming out. Here's a list to start off with

Ravensburger https://www.ravensburger.us/products/jigsaw-puzzles/adult-puzzles/index.html

Definitely the most well known brand, and they probably make more puzzles than anyone else.

Cloudberries https://www.cloudberries.co.uk/

I'm doing my first puzzle by them currently and really enjoy it! Their prices are also very reasonable for the quality imo

Galison https://www.galison.com/

These guys make really beautiful puzzles, especially their foil ones!

Piecework https://pieceworkpuzzles.com/

Well known for their beautiful boxes, many of these puzzles have a food theme to them. Definitely on the high end for price.

Blue Kazoo https://bluekazoo.games/

A more expensive brand, like piecework, but they have a lot of cool themes, like the tetris ones. Also check out their round earth, moon and sun ones!

Pomegranate https://www.pomegranate.com/collections/puzzles

Another very artsy brand with pretty reasonable prices! They have quite a few nature puzzles, including bird themes.

Eeboo https://eeboo.com/

Not really my style, but if you like something really colorful and busy check them out!

2. Solving tips

Some of this are little things, but 8-10 are really important!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRlCNXdcMc0

3. Equipment

A lot of people like to buy the puzzle trays so you can free up the table when needed, but advice from some SERIOUS PUZZLERS is to use foam board, usually white or black. This will give you the best amount of contrast with the pieces. It's also super cheap and can be purchased at any art supply store. This is also mentioned in the video above.

Anyway - please post about puzzles here! I am currently doing https://www.cloudberries.co.uk/product/tokyo-jigsaw-puzzle-1000-pieces/ which is really fun

Also here's people doing jigsaw puzzles with some insane speed

I finished the Tokyo puzzle. It was kind of tough because everything is so distinct (except the sky/fireworks which was easy). At the same time, it's pretty easy to find where most of the pieces go quickly

"Imagination is not enough. You have to have knowledge too, and an experience of the oddity of life."
The Mrs. and I enjoy a good puzzle every now and then. During the covid puzzle boom a lot of poster print artists and painters started selling jigsaw puzzles of their work so I've got a decent little collection we're slowly working through, there were so many puzzles of good art cranked out in that period before the market was sated.

Another fun one was a christmas gift last year, the 2 million dollar puzzle by a company named mschf. Which is just a puzzle of a large rainbow colored QR code that will link to a redemption for what is basically a lotto ticket. We only won a dollar but it was a super challenging puzzle and was kind of fun to do once. There were some challenging inserted gimmicks, some obvious like an extra corner, some less obvious like pieces that seemingly fit in multiple places and discovering wrong fits part way through and having to double back and rework areas. Unfortunately my wife also gave my mother one who promptly noped out so I'm trying to work up the :effort: to do the puzzle a second time before the deadline in february since we were gifted the puzzle back. It was kind of a slog and I sort of don't want to, but what it we have the 2 mill?! :ohdear:

For puzzles that take multiple sessions we use foldable poster boards, glassine sheets and a flat file. The glassine sheets are good for transferring from board to table and vice versa, while also covering the art face while the board is folded up and stored. We had the flat file prior to our interest in puzzling but its really come in handy for working on puzzles that we can't leave out because of our younger children.

Very convenient timing on this thread. Would anyone have recommendations for puzzles with fairly large pieces while still having a decent number of pieces in a box?

My elderly parents have gotten into jigsaw puzzles as a couple activity, but their eyesight is not amazing, so they have a hard time with puzzles with regular-sized pieces, let alone tiny ones. But the puzzles with larger pieces tend to be like, 100-200 pieces in a box, and that's not a lot of content, so they keep having to buy tons of low-count puzzles.

I just finished another puzzle. Kind of difficult as there are only ~six main colors, each appearing in multiple circles. but nice to finish!

Splish!

We like doing jigsaw puzzles, but our problem is a general lack of space; when we're putting together a jigsaw, there's nowhere to play board games. It's about time to start another, though, I think.

My spouse has gotten a real kick out of Artifact Puzzles (https://www.artifactpuzzles.com/). They make really lovely wooden puzzles with "unusually shaped" pieces like
or
.

Some even have non-flat edges, which is WILD. This makes they a lot harder than their piece count would suggest. So big recommend there if that floats your boat.

Curious if anyone has a suggestion for a mat that could be rolled up part-way through doing a puzzle to keep it safe from cats and/or smaller children? I think I've seen something like it before, and my card game playmats aren't quite big enough to handle a larger sized puzzle.

Despair brings the puttyknife down.
I’ve been collecting and doing old dungeons and dragons puzzles and old video game puzzles.

Have been really enjoying putting these together. There are newer dungeons and dragon puzzles that are insanely hard. I need to get a puzzle table so I can solve them as they took far too long and robbed us of our dining room table.

oh those are cool! I did one more puzzle yesterday. kind of annoying with the text - yes it's orientated in different ways, but with most pieces you can't make out enough text to know where it goes

got this as a gift - it's a tough one! outside of the shelving and the top part, everything is different. seems like i just have to take out every piece and place it in the general area where it goes!

I was right, what a nightmare! every single little thing is different outside of a few small areas, so you just have to pick up a piece and find where it goes. over and over
