I spent a lot of time around film students and I think all of Nollywood feels like a Mecca for film students to make wild things.

Russian dystopia movies really have a whole vibe and I might love all of them. The length this movie goes to portray an alien world is pretty fun and I wish more movies with this budget would get this creative. This and A Boy and His Dog should be a double feature.

What happens if a (pre)/teen makes a movie and goons help out? This masterpiece.

I think have sort of ascended to enjoying the idea of a movie more so than the movie itself.

Also I loved The Last Starfighter as a kid, but I haven't had the courage to watch it again and find out if I can handle the truth

It holds up. Last Starfighter and Flight of the Navigator are maybe 2 movies I loved as a kid that still hold up.

Aw, that's good to know.

You know, I think the central concept of "video game is actually a simulator scouting for talent to hire/poach/kidnap for a desperate cause" would play even better today.

Folks have been trying to get Last Starfighter rebooted or in a sequel for a while now but it stalled I think in 2022.

I recently happened to look up The Ninth Gate, a movie in which Johnny Depp plays an unscrupulous rare book dealer who stumbles upon a book reputed to allow one to gain great power. I knew it was never really a hit, but I was a little surprised to learn it has very low reviews and scores. Apparently it's bad.

I loved it from beginning to end. He gets pulled along by circumstance as well as his own draw to the mysteries he encounters, and he always seems almost entirely out of his depth. He never has the power in any interaction, and more importantly as he bumps up against the types of people who are after the promises in "the devil's bible" it's very clear he is not actually part of that scene. He's not like them. He's neither a cultist nor a "satanist". And yet...

Reviews and critical reception I guess weren't kind, I still loved it though.

Folks have a kind of a problem with the director more than the movie I think.

These are the best "bad movies" I've ever seen. Each one rewatchable again and again. Each one a sort of passion project to someone, each one a complete train wreck. But there's earnestness in it.

I think most of these are on Tubi and worth every minute.

Where is Bad Johnson?

What is the weirdest Paul Giammati movie?

If i'm being edgy, I guess i'd say Cosmopolis because his scene in the movie is basically like he was going to get dinner somewhere and they asked him to come make Robert Pattinson look sadder than normal before his Whopper got cold.

If i'm being serious, i'd probably say Shoot em Up because he seemed like he was really trying when everyone else was just there to be weird.

Another bad movie I love is Dagon of all the b movie adaptations of Lovecraft it's the most competent I think. Nothing bad about it in my book other than it's cheap but that's part of its charm

Really enjoyed Dagon though sometimes I think Ghostbusters is the best Lovecraft movie though it’s more about how a Call of Cthulhu campaign usually goes.

I always thought Death to Smoochy was one of those films that everyone who saw it loved it, but just not that many people saw it. I never knew there were people who actually disliked it.

What the hell, it's great!

I really enjoyed that movie and still will scream, “it’s a rocket ship!!!!” When my students try and sneak dicks into class.

The other day I was thinking about movies we used to leave on at parties so we’d have weird visuals here at there. The movie we used a lot (because it is a lot) was Sars Wars.

If you haven’t seen it, please correct this error in your life:

I thought The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was a pretty decent adaption of the book but a lot of nerds I know hated it. The casting was pretty spot on, the production design was good and the changes they made to the narrative were necessary imo. The fact that Adams died just before production began predisposed some people to think of it as especially adulterated, but I was okay with it being Hitchhiker's Guide: The Movie in the same vein as, like, Street Fighter: The Movie.

Which one? The timing seems like the BBC adaptation but just wanted to make sure.

I wouldn't say bad, but disappointing. It has fantastic ideas, but personally I don't feel it quite lands them.

The dubbed version of The First of the North Star that came out in the early '90's as japanimation started to take off is pretty terrible but I love the weird cadences of the English voice actors dealing with the unwieldy translations.

Also, everyone explodes or gets sliced into pieces. That's pretty cool.

But how do you feel about the live action Fist of the North Star because I love it a lot.

I am a connoisseur of terrible movies but my absolute favorite bad movie is...BATTLESHIP!

It's so earnest. Everyone tries really hard. Liam Neeson is in it for some reason with the worst American accent of all time. Let's not forget the army veteran with no legs who is super bummed about not being able to kill people anymore and he finally gets his chance to take lives again. Or Rihanna giving the performance of her loving life. There's even a wise Miyagi Japanese character who helps the rebellious American learn how to lead.

The little details like the enemy ordinance being represented as pegs or the map that represents a grid system that works based on tsunami ocean buoys.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iGp8D9832Y

How about a Battleship drift right before unloading pure unadultered American firepower?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCqDdsZY7RA

It's beautiful. It's so loving good. :911:

e: Honorable mentions:

Tokyo Drift
Battle: Los Angeles
White House Down

do not sleep ever on an action movie that stars a famous musician as an important character

I never felt more patriotic than when they fired up the old ww2 battleship with all the old veterans while AC/DC blasted in the background.

That they then drifted the boat to victory like they were in Tokyo Drift or Initial D was a masterstroke.
