quick reminder that the oscars chose Shakespeare In Love for Best Picture in 1999, over contender Saving Private Ryan. The Green Mile wasn't nominated, nor was Fight Club does anyone remember anything about Shakespeare in Love other than Gwyneth Paltrow's boobs

Dr. Gojo Shioji posted:The Green Mile and Fight Club were released in 1999, whereas Shakespeare in Love and Saving Private Ryan were 1998. Although American Beauty winning for 1999 was also pretty weak. I always get the rolling dates wrong also Green Mile was nominated for best picture, but lost to American Beauty. Fight Club still wasnt nominated.

mannerup posted:Martin Scorsese only winning one Oscar in his entire tenure (for The Departed) is also bullshit Clint Eastwood has more Best Director wins than Scorsese. Unforgiven deserves every Oscar it won, but what the gently caress was Million Dollar Baby also that Scorsese's win is for a remake mannerup posted:Goodfellas losing to Dances with Wolves in 1991 for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay Adaptation and Best Film Editing also was complete bullshit (Pesci deserved the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor which he received, and I am not sad to see Lorraine Bracco lose to Whoopi Goldberg for Best Supporting Actress). The Academy has its own head up its rear end, saying that it reviews movies based on the 'art', so movies that are movies don't go as far - except the farthuffers absolutely adore movies about Hollywood

You Are A Werewolf posted:Remember when Marisa Tomei won the best supporting actress Oscar for My Cousin Vinny, and people were really salty about it (and still are!)? I love the conspiracy that Jack Palance read the wrong name off the card but since it was announced the Academy had to honor it

Worf posted:Golden globes but they give you a statue for nicest boobs This was basically the Oscars from 1988-2008 quote:These nine actresses left nothing to the imagination in their Academy Award-nominated performances, and proceeded to take home the prize: In 2008, Kate Winslet won for The Reader, which was the first time in five years an actress who went nude won since two monster-related performances: Charlize Theron for Monster in 2003 and Halle Berry for Monster's Ball in 2001. Flashback two more years to a string of consecutive naked wins: Hilary Swank for Boys Don't Cry (1999), Gwyneth Paltrow for Shakespeare in Love (1998), and Helen Hunt for As Good as It Gets (1997). We get two more consecutive winners in 1994 and 1993: Jessica Lange in Blue Sky, preceded by Holly Hunter in The Piano, respectively. Finally, we reach Jodie Foster, who dramatically stripped down in The Accused in 1988.

Worf posted:Did you just Google Oscar winning boobs? I googled "best actress after showing boobs", which is obviously far classier but also it was a p. big unspoken thing about the Oscars, especially after back-to-back boobs with Halle Berry and Charlize Theron
