I only ever saw Wayne's World in the theater (and maybe on the first release VHS), so I had no idea that there was a version where he didn't play Stairway. Yeah, it just goes to show that this kind of fuckery has been happening to movies for as long as they have been around. I'd be more inclined to side with Led Zeppelin to get their money from the studio if something like 60% of their entire catalogue wasn't built on riffs they stole from blues musicians. (Like, if loving Led Zeppelin had to pay a 6 figure royalty for the rights every time they managed to play 7 consecutive notes from another musician, they'd be the poorest band on the planet.)

It’s crazy because while that plot thread was so stupid, the actual scene with that revelation features the best acting Harrison Ford has done in the last 30 years. He played the heartbreak so perfectly that he probably would have gotten an Oscar nomination of the rest of the film wasn’t…what it turned out to be.

I feel like Orion & MGM are really loving up the movie's awards campaign, because it has been seriously underperforming in all the precursors despite the buzz out of TIFF being that it was a shoe-in for Best Picture. I hope that it still manages to get nominated for Best Picture, because that will probably double (or triple) the number of people who go out to see it. But I'm afraid we'll just end up with Cord Jefferson getting a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination.

It's a pretty solid list. Also, I'm super-irked that American Fiction is probably gonna lose to Oppenheimer in every single category where it is nominated. (RDJ is gonna get a "thanks for the great career and for making us all so much loving money" Oscar, even though Sterling K Brown really deserves it.)

Some people I know are also pretty upset that Gerwig didn't get a Best Director nomination. I'm just going to assume that they haven't seen many movies this year. Not that Glazer deserves his nomination (or that The Zone of Interest deserves any nominations at all), but even if that could be swapped out there are a ton of other movies that deserve a Best Director nomination before Gerwig deserves it for Barbie. (Todd Haynes for May December, Celine Song for Past Lives, Cord Jefferson for American Fiction, etc etc etc)

The Alamo Drafthouse is almost entirely devoid of the little annoyances you get at other theaters. For example, they don't play ads the whole time from when the auditorium opens until the movie starts (instead they have little customer-made pre-shows playing various things that are specifically relevant to whatever movie you're going to see).

Their no talking/texting policy is famously strict, but the real secret sauce that makes the movie-going experience at the drafthouse better than any other theater chain: They don't let in unsupervised minors. It doesn't matter if the movie is rated G, no one under 18 is gonna get in unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. That means if you are seeing a movie at a drafthouse, you are guaranteed to not have a group of high schoolers in the theater. And since groups of high schoolers tend to account for 90% of all annoying bullshit behavior by patrons at movie theaters, you just don't get that at the drafthouse.

That said, the drafthouse is clearing hedging their bets like crazy this year. They always did repertory showings of classic and/or important movies, but typically those were pretty limited or were part of some special program. Now they're building a lot more repertory showings into their main schedule. They realize that there's going to be a major content drought because of last year's strikes, so they're doing something called Alamo Time Capsule to try and convince folks to keep going there even when there are no worthwhile new releases (because hey, wouldn't it be cool to finally see The Talented Mr. Ripley on the big screen!)

Funny People was so tremendously weird. It was back in 2009, the same year the WTF podcasts started and before the whole world was sick to loving death of comics talking about what their lives are like. It was clearly Apatow trying really hard to make a personal statement and capture the weird dynamics that exist for people trying to make it in comedy. A world where you might know and work with literal multi-millionaire celebrities while you have to have a fast food job to make rent on the 1-bedroom apartment you are sharing with 4 other comics. And where you might end up hitting the fame lottery yourself and becoming a multi-millionaire yourself, completely alienating yourself from all of your friends.

For example, there's no way that moments like the Thanksgiving scene weren't based on some real-life poo poo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Jjmx8Axp6E

But I think it didn't work because it was such a personal story. It was way way way too long. It either needed to focus on the Sandler character realizing and trying to overcome his isolation or it needed to focus on the Seth Rogan character trying to make it.

I don't know how much of it was done to show off "hey, we are in color now!" and how much was done because broadcast TV back then absolutely topped-out at 480p resolution and most viewers were more likely seeing the equivalent of 360p (along with plenty of static and interference).

It definitely wasn't because people didn't know how to shoot things in color yet. People had been shooting films in color all over Hollywood for well over a decade before the first color broadcast, and almost all films were in color by the time network shows were starting to shoot in it.

Orthodontic works takes a lot of time and you will have noticeable braces/invisalign for at least a year. If you got famous before 4K TVs were in every home, I could see the desire to avoid all that cost & hassle for something most people won’t have sharp enough images to see.

They also didn't bring up how Verhoeven was dating Elizabeth Berkley at the time, which I guess makes sense as it doesn't reflect very well on him. Also Leia surviving in such a stupid way in the second movie, only to do absolutely nothing for the rest of the series and then disappear under a blanket. They knew drat well the actress was dead, they could have just let the character die and nothing about the story would change.

Another studio decision, apparently. Since Fisher had died shortly after filming, Johnson wanted to come up with a good end for Leia in TLJ but Kathleen Kennedy demanded that they keep Leia alive. But yeah, imagine how much better the "Holdo maneuver" scene would have been if Leia had been the one on the ship, doing the navigation/positioning for the jump directly into all the First Order ships, and there are a million alarms going off (maybe even have Poe or someone say "is she trying to jump into them? That's impossible! There are a thousand navigation controls on the ship and every single one would have to be over-ridden!"), then Leia uses the force, all the alarms stop, and then the coolest scene in the entire movie is also an amazing send-off to a beloved character.

EDIT: Looking at this post, I realize how dumb it is to re-litigate plot points and try to improve movies that have come out over half a decade ago. One thing I really appreciated about this Re:View was when Rich was about to launch into a "they should have..." and then stopped himself. Easily the worst trap youtube film critics fall into is the "this is how it should have been done (aka: how I would have done it)". Mike can be really bad about this at times, but at least Rich is starting to come around on the topic.

The hosts are two film critics who have a frighteningly encyclopedic knowledge of film and the mechanics of how Oscar campaigns are run. While they cover films that were Oscar failures, they also talk a lot about the "state of the race" for the current year. When you're able to see the Oscars less as a dumb ceremony and more as the six-to-nine-month long reality-TV-style competition that it actually is, the whole thing becomes a lot more interesting.
