1. Descent

An excellent game that my friend described as Doom with spaceships, there's even a pinky analogue with camouflage and an even worse chaingunner than doom's (also in camo variety. fun stuff).
There's a lot of bullshit in this game. Enemies have instant reaction time ala blood cultists, so if youre in a room with 2 chaingunners you might die quite literally a second in the room, less so if you open the door and theres someone on the other side. While the opening animation plays they see you and WILL shoot while youre sitting there with your dick out. The enemies' splash damage with rockets might as well be continent sized while yours is practically nonexistant, making shooting out of corners a hindrance, since the rockets fire out of each side, and one WILL hit the corner next to you. This game is absolutely miserly with health ups, and paired with some truly unfair monster closets, will make you die over and over, with some stages taking as many as 6 lives from me (level 21 with its huge open room with chaingunner spawners is beyond horseshit). I'm not the greatest at fps games but i consider myself capable enough, and even with uncapped turning speed and modern controls that dont require a modifier key to strafe, i got my rear end beat over and over, and by the last third of the game i accepted that i was just gonna lose 4-6 lives per stage.

but i opened with all the negatives just to get them out of the way to remark that despite all that, this game still manages to kick a tremendous amount of rear end. You will die, and it seems the game was designed expecting that, cause lives are plentiful, making deaths just a momentary (but tedious) setback. When the space allows it, and when the enemy encounters are just right, this poo poo feels bananas great, and getting comfortable with the movement and developing the 3d positioning intuition is cool.

And somehow the best part is that they made a redook audio soundtrack for the mac version of all things and it is loving incredible. they got some canadian industrial act called Skinny Puppy and they fuckin nail practically every track. Insane.

i still have lots to say about it, a lot of it negative, but this was one hell of a game to beat. stone cold classic

Metroid Prime 2 [primehack]

picked up my year old save back and was surprisingly less lost than i thought. same issues as with playing metroid prime 1 with primehack, these games were not designed with mouse and keyboard, so the side dodge is only available when locked on and since the game expects you to lock on, some hitboxes are insanely finicky, and enemies will move back and forth in annoying patterns a lot. Still, manageable, and it says a lot about the game's difficulty that i didnt die a single time (the final bosses were close though).

some weird pacing, it starts with sandy dunes and sandy temples for like 5 hours, and the dark world gimmick can make it disorienting at times, trying to figure out where to go for the next powerup, not to mention the cutscene that plays whenever you shift worlds, which thankfully primehack has a toggle to disable completely. this makes it a lot more tolerable, but theres still a lot of backtracking and realizing you took the wrong portal so youre cut off from the area you needed to be so back to the portal, back to light world, find the other portal that you need, etc.

just like in prime 1 some powerups seem redundant or lame, such as the echo visor or the multirocket thing, which are really only used to gate you out of progression and have limited application elsewhere. screw attack is as finicky a bitch as it was in super, somehow.

still, a very enjoyable (if sometimes dragging) game, and the fortress consistently shocked me with how insanely cool it looked, which made me appreciate the rest of the game's art more. every room is practically hand crafted and detailed, which is a nice treat when compared to our current age of roguelite procgen open world copypaste. but despite being enjoyable it loses the wow factor since prime 1 exists and is a better paced game. worthy play, and im glad i finished it

agreed on the maverick theme being the best in the series, and the theme for the zero virus stage is godly.. i like the apocalyptic vibe full of finality, especially if zero dies, and its a shame the game itself isnt up to snuff. gently caress alia, too.

3. Dusk (normal mode). Episode 1 of this starts kinda slow - simple level design, a little too many open arenas where you just serious sam around and light up dogs. But ep2 & ep3 really kick rear end, better enemy variety & placement, excellent level design that elegantly jumps between cramped castle dives and open air sprawls. theres also a handful of cleverly crafted gimmick levels sprinkled throughout. great enemy design, i hated the drat dog go carts lmfao. what an insane idea for a hyper pinkie type. its cool that they wait until the last like 6 levels to add Cacodemons but theyre real bastards once they do. it was probably too easy on Normal but im glad i played through it to check it all out, i may just pick at random levels now on Hard from level select and try to find all the secrets etc. the only weapon i never really liked is the grenade launcher, i never got a handle on the firing arc really. the hunting rifle felt sick, and i really loved the Riveter. fun game.

you should try pistol start mode, i did a playthru of that and it was a neat way to revisit it. i reinstalled it last month to check out the dusk hd thing and new weapon, but decided to spice it up by trying cero miedo and it was pretty annoying. i coulda sworn i beat it on that difficulty but i hated it so much when i tried just now that i didnt bother after beating the first chapter.

Op4 has had a couple of different people try to get it remade, idk what the current status is i think one got abandoned and the other is making very slow progress. Similar situation with blue shift but its got steadier progress and they recently released a demo for one of the chapters and i hear its really good. I think its in the black mesa workshop.

Stranglehold
https://i.imgur.com/toy2A5B.mp4

game doesnt always work, but when it does it feels incredible.

its a bit tough getting tequila to do what you want, and sometimes when theres two railings next to each other, hell jump to the wrong one, either sending you sliding down when you didnt want to or hop to a regular one for him to stand like a douchebag. its hard to tell where enemies are spawning, as this game has some *serious* problems with visibility, given some areas can be real fuckin visually noisy, and it can spam you with a lot of dudes a lot of fast.

https://i.imgur.com/AJ7cw9e.mp4

the game makes up for a lot of its shortcomings by having such an insane amount of style, and they understood that the reason hardboiled's teahouse shootout works is because theres exploding bursting debris and poo poo flying all over the screen in slow motion, so theres a LOT of destructibles and explosions and particles. they put an insane amount of work on some of these environments and it shows, and theres a lot of neat environmental kills by like, shooting down a neon sign on a guy, or breaking a dinosaur skeleton so that it crushes a guy. sadly these seem to become mostly forgotten as the game goes on, stacking a whole bunch of them at the start to wow you, and the only visual indicator being a small glint you can barely see when youre getting shot at by a billion dudes. this often results in seeing a chandelier or neon sign ready to be shot at and cause mayhem just after the smoke clears and you wiped the floor with every dude in hong kong.

https://i.imgur.com/cZOLPZA.mp4

its got this simple but fun skill shot system where stunts and poo poo give you more stars, which charge up a meter for special moves, most of them useful, but stuff i was a bit hesitant to use, which made most of the pickups a bit wasted cause i didnt wanna just use the one that makes you invincible every half a minute.

If you like max payne or fear or any of that poo poo, you gotta play this fucker. the fact that a sequel was in development but midway died is pretty sad, cause with some refining and even higher production values this could have easily been one of the greats. it falls a tad short but it still kicks an insane amount of rear end and is worth at least one playthru. farewell

FEAR Extraction Point

its fine, but it has too many open arenas, which are kinda cool in their own way but in a game with a shotgun as good as FEAR it runs counter to the way i like to play. the interior arenas arent as circuitous as the ones in the base campaign so the enemies cant really flank you, and timegate did some tweaking cause either the AI is more accurate now or the damage values on weapons got adjusted. in base fear i finished it on the highest difficulty no problem but two chapters in Extraction POint i had to lower it to expert, and even then they still killed me in a single volley of fire from a regular smg. that poo poo did not happen once in FEAR.

the new weapons are really fun to use, and i wish they gave you more reflex boosters so you could really go ham with the minigun in slomo. pretty solid all around.

Alien Isolation (hard mode)
What a cool videogame lol. Some technical flaws, some annoying gameplay decisions, and kind of a nothing plot with nothing characters, but everything else, the art and sound design are firing on all cylinders. Incredibly engrossing, even though it wasnt very scary.

I only ever jumped twice at the alien getting me, and the other times were insanely loud explosion jump scares. The fact that the alien was more annoying than scary speaks to the fact the the game is kinda slow to start, but once you get some gadgets to play around the xenomorph it gets a lot more dynamic and you can be on the move more often while still not being safe. I think they might give you the flamethrower a tad too early, but its good to have a tool to push againat the ai.

Theres a section after lining up the satellite dishes qhere the alien is like pissed off and hunting you through a series of rooms, and if you memorized the vents, the desks you could crawl under and use the gadgets smart its smooth but full of cool close calls and improvisational tactica. I got it in one go and felt like a mastermind lol. I dont think i ever used smoke bombs once, and i had my inventory full 90% of the game, which is making me think of someday replaying this on nightmare mode.

The save points are absolute genius, and i wanna see this type of thing on more games. I died once while saving and it was at the evry last encounter with aliens. They finally got me lol.

oh yeah i forgot to mention i beat metroid prime 3 before i started playing the bomberman games

i wasnt expecting a lot, so it managed to beat those expectations by being solid enough, but still not particularly great or interesting.
hypermode felt like a cheat, and youre never truly starving for health. i didnt die once in the game, but maybe thats due to rebalancing in the trilogy.
the ability to fly between different points should make the maps the most interconnected theyve been yet, cause each landing zone would, in theory, be like a room with 10 doors leading to any other landing zone, with a loading screen in between. sadly in practice this means that between each landing zone theres a series of rooms back to back in a hallway, with few hubs that branch off in different ways, and then one of the branches goes on into a dead end with a landing zone. this helped ease some of the backtracking, which by the end of prime 2 felt like a bit of a drag.

one of the things i knew going in was that this game features Text Boxes, so theres more character and dialogue than ever, which feels antithetical to metroids lone exploratory feel. i guess that bridge has already been crossed with the constant interruptions from scan visor, which in this game are taken up to eleven, with multiple identical terminals that function as on/off switches having a separate scan for each state. this gets old fast, but is optional so whatever.

for how much more of a focus there is on characters, they all fall very flat because theres no time to know them. maybe for you thats a blessing, but given theyre a sort of focus i think they needed to work them better. they dont even say something when they die, no mid battle barks, nothing to give them the slightest bit of extra characterization they sorely need. they become juiced up on the phazon and thats it. dark samus has a cool design and some neat animations, and i think they could have made her scarier, like the sa-x, but she does not feel threatening at all, especially given the game is super easy. at least she has a very cool theme song. thankfully, despite being easy, all boss fights have multiple stages that add some flavor, but it feels predictable knowing that at half health they do a new thing, and at about a quarter they enter hypermode. whatever, they commit to having more attack patterns, im down for it.

for some reason they make beams a linear upgrade path which was really disconcerting after 1 and 2, and as such the fighting becomes a bit more simplistic, but thanks to wii remote aiming, theres is more actual fps mechanical skill involved, which is welcome given im playing it with primehack. this results in fairer hitboxes on enemies, and more creative shooting challenges. i guess thats the reason they didnt focus on alternate beams.

the only really visually cool area is the skytown, and this comes at the cost of it being the most linear metroid area ive seen yet without playing other M. the fuel gel planet had some cool and clever puzzles, and the pirate homeworl was kinda neat but it does not have the creativity of the fortress from 2. music in general is not very catchy either.

finally, i felt there were a lot of bullshit one or two use case items in prime 1 and 2, but this game takes the cake, with the phazon overcharge whip which is used a grand total of 3 times. the hypermode morph ball area of effect attack that is used like 5 times, etc. at least the xray visor has some neat uses when you get the nova beam which phases thru walls, but overall, this feels more artificial barrier like than most metroid before it. and they bring back the worthless fuckin multirocket thing, and take away the sick as gently caress charge beam combos.

a bit bland, but i wouldnt say its bad. also they really tried hard to show the wii is NEXT GEN by having so much goddamn fuckin blur and bloom and browns.

its such a joke that in all the prime games you get a variant of the xray visor which is entirely there to be used once or twice to see an invisible platform here and there. in 2 its the echo visor so you can view arbitrarily placed points to shoot at, and they make you do a music puzzle twice. such lame progress gating.
