Ever since chat based customer support became a thing I always want to use it and I can't understand why having to call tech support on the phone even exists. I recently had to deal with venmo and they ONLY offer chat support, which seems way smarter to me.

- Can do other stuff while talking to them, waiting for a response

- No worries about not being able to understand someones accent

- Easily accessible log of whatever was talked about

- If you don't have a phone handy for some reason you're good

The whole experience just seems more convenient in general.

No one really likes talking on the phone right? Let's get with the times.

Doing stuff and things

I've had good luck with text based support these days... when it exists.
What annoys me even more is no text based way to schedule something, what loving year is this? I don't need to talk to you to say I want you to examine my body at this time and date, thanks doc.
Even dumber when all you need is labwork to refill meds but they want you to drive 10hrs to this location to have it done instead of just ordering out the labs and giving you a video call.

Yeah, but have you ever really laid into a customer service rep over text? It's not as satisfying as really letting someone have it over the phone.

the text support is better because it creates a paper trail so you can prove to the next support person what the previous one told you. it won’t help of course but you can feel a really great sense of justified outrage that phone calls simply can’t replicate.

I had an order with Amazon that just disappeared after getting processed, I waited a couple of weeks and then called them.

To my amazement, I spoke with a person in under 5 minutes, she was super helpful and solved the issue in a few more minutes.

It was great! I was expecting to deal with a maze of phone menus.

I just followed the steps and called when prompted. Nothing special. Maybe my order was easy to resolve because it got processed by Amazon itself but then no shipping company ever took possession. So she cancelled and placed a new order on the spot.

Not really any different than sitting on hold for 20 minutes then being disconnected.

Monkey's paw curls, and in 2024 all customer support will be replaced by AI chat which, regardless of the original problem, will inevitably lead to the end result of every support request being AI-generated furry porn.

Yeah I’ll vouch for this too. Obviously Amazon sucks as a company but their phone reps are fantastic. They call you back within a few minutes and are just like “no big, here’s your money back”.

Old people hate text-based support because it makes it harder for them to throw temper tantrums and yell at the support ppl

I mean, if it's a basic thing with a basic fix, sure. But it seems to me it's way more work and harder to convey meaning on more involved issues. Far easier just to talk. Most of the time.

You can do other stuff while on a call too

Now you have to understand someone's spelling, itt hord for hiring well spellers otherwise of talking well

Businesses sometimes don't want a log (for you) of what their services told you about

You don't have a phone handy, even a software phone, but you have a computer to use chat???

I can see why you think it's more convenient when you didn't really think about it all that much. You didn't even mention one of the few good things, that it's quieter and doesn't require making noises with your mouth.

I briefly worked a chat support job and I quit my job one day after I got stuck on a chat for two hours with this person who wasn't understanding image ratios and they kept asking why their image was "long" and I was trying to explain the difference in aspect ratios (square vs rectangle) for two hours while they got really mad and typed at me in all caps about how squares and rectangles are the same thing. I don't think I would have survived that experience if it was over the phone

All they had to do was click the button to use a 1:1 aspect ratio (the logo was a square) but they typed angrily in all caps for 2 hours instead of just click it
