Hyahahaha! Failure as a human! Failure as a human!

"You are not alone."

What's the game about?

Originally released in 1997 for the Sega Saturn and getting a PS1 port two years later in 1999; Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers is a first-person dungeon crawler JRPG developed and published by Atlus. The game is part of a spin-off series called Devil Summoner; which is also part of the Megami Tensei franchise. The story takes place in Amami City, a coastal country town suddenly turned into a cyber-metropolis thanks to the company Algon Soft. The game plays like most Megami Tensei titles; having turn-based combat and gaining the ability to negotiate with demons to make them your allies. In 2012 the game got ported, updated and properly localized to the Nintendo 3DS handheld; this version includes new demons, voice acting, a streetpass feature that allows you to buy Devil Summoner demons using play coins, among other things. That's the version that I'll be playing, luckily this game never got a sequel :).

Where is Ringo?

Taking the L.

Aren't you also writing an EO1HD LP? Is it canceled?

Yes, I am and no, it's not. Soul Hackers is relatively short game and I need to take a break from playing, reading and writing about EO. I'll be uploading the gathering spots, monster compendium and all that stuff from time to time.

Spoiler Policy

Don't.

About the LP

This will be a Screenshot Let's Play with the occasional gifs and linked videos. Characters in this game already have a personality so I won't be adding any dialogue unlike my EO1 LP, as for the MC... I'll probably write some lines of my own, NPCs tend to have a lot of dialogues and I need to separate them somehow. Finally, my own commentary outside of the gameplay will be written in italics, like this.
Music will have this little ghost and I highly recommend listening to it at least once.

Miscellaneous info

You can read my ongoing Etrian Odyssey HD LP here.
In case you're curious, here's the "Devil Summoner" LP made by PeaceDiner. While Soul Hackers isn't exactly a sequel, several characters from Devil Summoner will show up.
Want to check on Nemechi to know which demons to unlock? Check the Nemechi List. Information here will be updated as I make progress through the game

Hyahahaha! Failure as a human! Failure as a human!
Update 1: Amami City

Atlus, an infinite source of joy and sometimes disappointment.

:siren: "Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers Intro" :siren:

This is the new intro for the 3DS version, I'm surprised by the amount of foreshadowing it has.

Cool title screen, the chip in the back is more important than you think. But... What if we skip the intro and don't touch anything for a few seconds?

:siren: "Soul Hackers OG intro" :siren:

Doing that will trigger the original Sega Saturn/PS1 intro. Give it a listen, I personally prefer the new one.

"Prologue 1"

While its public opening is coming soon, creator Algon Soft is reportedly being flooded with beta applications. The number of users is so great that the company is unable to shut down the site for new user registrations.

You're a member of the great hacker group, the Spookies. You ought to be able to pull this off, at least.

Our protagonist still doesn't have his iconic GUMP, I'll be using this sprite in the meantime. Hee ho~

See? It's deserted around this terminal. It's the perfect place to do a little remote hacking, don't you think?

Everytime we get one of these dialogue choices, I'll be answering to them in bold text.

We're really doing this?

We can't rely on luck to get us into the Paradigm X Beta. I doubt we'd win that lottery... Come on, please?

I'll give it a shot.

Haha, thanks. Leader's already found where the list of winners is kept on their server, so just overwrite one of the names there.

:siren: "Hacking into Paradigm X winners list" :siren:

This sequence is quite long so I'll be linking a video. I don't know about you, but I love those clunky 3D animations.

I'm in.

So, this is the list of lucky winners who are getting into the beta...

"Prologue 2"

The protagonist has different names and handles based on a few comics, a novel and a manga. I personally prefer Kenichi Senno with the handle being Sanagi but since the game never refers to him by any of those names I'll just use my own.

Huh? Did it work? Once you're on the list, the license should be sent to your home email... Wait, hold on. There's still something on the screen...

"Redman"

Huh? Who's this? This guys knows you? What's going on?

My name is Kinap. You are in danger. Leave now. The authorities are on their way.

"Kinap..."?

It must be a prank.

I cannot speak much now, but remember this: I will appear before you again...

"Suspicious Occasion"

Who was that...? He knew your name. That's weird, huh?

:siren:

Ah! Oh... Geez... That's just your phone.

Hi, brother! It's me, Tomoko! I have big news!

Some useless trivia, the phone had a different design on the Sega Saturn.

It's...... Heehee, it's big! Hurry up and come home! Hurry!

Oh, was that Tomoko? It was, wasn't it?

No, it wasn't.

Nice try. I heard her voice from here. She sure sounded happy though. Well... I wonder if you hack's taken effect yet. Let's get back to your house.

"Home"

Hm? Ah, Tomato. You're home.

I just realized that my name is Tomato and my sister is Tomoko, what a family.

Tomoko was looking for you earlier... Oh, speak of the devil.

Hey, brother!

PFT...! TOMOKO PAWAH HAHAHA, I completely forgot this game gives Tomoko your last name.

Oh, Hitomi's here, too! Hello!

It's been a while, Tomoko. You look happy. Did you get good news?

Yeah! Was it obvious? Big, big news! Tah-dah! One of us is lucky enough to get into the Paradigm X beta test! Congrats, Tomato!

Is that so? Nice, Tomato! I didn't think you'd win that drawing, hahaha.

Gee, thanks dad.

Oh, dear, you're such a child. You have to raise the kids better.

Tomoko, you need to study to get into a good school. You don't have time to be playing on the computer.

Ugh... I forgot she has this "Tomoko you need to study" sub-plot. It's probably just a cultural difference but... You'll see what I mean later.

I'm sorry, Hitomi. You shouldn't have to see this. Is your father still away on that research trip of his?

Yes. This time, he's investigating the pyramids.

It must be hard for you to be all by yourself at your age. You're always welcome to have dinner with us.

Hey, Tomato! I want to see Paradigm X!

Have you finished your homework, Tomoko?

Awwww... I'm almost done...

Haha... Don't worry, Tomoko. Come to Tomato's room when you're finished. We'll play on Paradigm X together.

I know we shouldn't have done that, but... I'm glad it worked. Huh? Oh, hey, you've got some mail.

This came from Leader, right? He must have used the Spookies cypher, then. Go ahead and run it through the decoding tool.

We moved our HQ? I didn't hear anything about that... Did something happen? Anyway, we should get to the South Parking Garage in Shibahama. Paradigm X is just going to have to wait. Too bad.

"2D Field"

Do yourself a favour and listen to 2D Field, it's of the best overworld themes ever made. Toshiko Tasaki is so loving talented... Anyway, see those green orbs floating around? They're NPCs, let's talk to them.

When you press the L button or R button, you can see the building names. You can't go inside the buildings that have names in grey. You can only go into the ones that have names in white. Do you want to try, too?

NPCs giving useful advice? Wow... If you ever get lost try pressing L or R to check on the destinations you have available.

A friend of mine told me that they hooked me up with access. I asked them, and they said it was sent... Do you think I got hacked?

. . .

Uh-oh...

Aw, man, I hope not. My girlfriend dumped me because we couldn't hang out in Paradigm X. If only I had some way of getting in...

I have come to observe this city. I want to be able to tell the story of this city to people all over the world.

Cool guy.

But now that I see the city, it's so much better. Everything's a definite improvement over the way it used to be.

That's all for now, off to Shibahama.

There's the garage but... let's have a look around first.

Soul Hackers is so good, it created Saul Goodman.

I told him I didn't understand, but he just kept talking. So, I paid more attention, and all of a sudden, it hit me... He just had this really thick Russian accent, and it threw me off.

I tried entering, but I didn't stand a chance... It wasn't just me, either. I don't know a single person who got selected. I wonder if they actually let anyone in.

Now that you mention the Goumaden, I hear the restaurant there is very good. Let's eat there tonight.

That's fine for tonight, but I want to go on vacation somewhere! You never take me anywhere!

I love these two, their interactions are so funny.

I'm looking to earn some money, so I've been job hunting these days. If you know a good place that's hiring, let me know.

Ugh... that hits too close to home.

Shibahama core is your usual nexus where you buy weapons, equipment, medicine, etc. Let's go inside.

"Video Muscle"

Not wrong... By the way, this guy is voiced by Matthew Mercer, every time I recognize him I laugh my rear end off for some reason.

Huh? You've got a girl with you? Sorry, I can't let you in. We specialize in the horror genre here. You know, the REALLY gory stuff.

. . .

I'd rather not have girls watching that stuff. Sorry, but it's store policy. I'm gonna have to ask you to leave.

Huh, okay then. How about Artists Allez?

"Picture Gallery Radder"

If you are not a member, then I'm afraid I must ask you to leave.

Uh...

"Automata"

I don't know about you, dear reader, but dolls creep me out...

My babies aren't ready to be seen in public at the moment.

"Drug Gear"

My mother tells me that I'm not yet ready for this, but... Well, I'm looking forward to doing business with you.

I got chills when he said "My mother's very proud"

"Hakkaku Liquor Store"

Oh hey, that's the theme from the Silverman residence in Persona 2

Unfortunately, we're not open for business today. I'm just not in the mood for it right now. So I won't be selling you any sake today. Tell your dad that you tried your best.

"Thai Eatery Sawamura"

All the food I make is delicious, and very good for you! Today's special is Tom Yum Goong. If you eat a lot, you'll get strong and you can do anything!

"Somatic Energy Institute"

Unfortunately, we are not open to new members at this time. If you were able to get a referral from a current member, you could join as a special member...

Huh, I must be missing something. Enough chit-chat, let's meet Spooky.

"Hideout"

Where is everybody? Are we too early?

:siren: "Spooky Arrives" :siren:

Oh, you guys beat me here. Sorry for calling you here so suddenly.

I'm sorry, what? I guess he became a hacker after retiring.

So, what happened? You moved the HQ without any warning.

It's nothing, really. I've just got something on my mind. Come on, let's talk inside.

This guy even knew Tomato's name. That's what bothers me...

Maybe you're just being paranoid. You got your name on the beta list without any problems, after all. Amami City's a fully network-integrated city. It wouldn't surprise me if there was a hacker that skilled out there. Still, I wouldn't think that you'd be all that worried about something like that...

Now, before you pick the sexy option let me explain something. This question will decide Hitomi's build, well not Hitomi exactly but... Anyway, here are the skills.

In case you're not familiar with Megaten. Agi is Fire, Bufu is Ice and Zio is Volt. Calling Hitomi upbeat will give her a Fire/Light build, calling her Calm will create an Ice/Dark build, and calling her sexy will give make her a Volt/Almighty user. All three of them have support skills included so pick whichever you want.

quote:

She's a calm one.

You're right... Maybe I'm too worried about what happened. But, you said you had something on your mind? What is it?

quote:

Sexy defines her.

H-Hey! What are you saying!?

Ha ha! Well, either way, I don't think there's any cause for concern.

Most people prefer this one due to the dialogue and because of Megidola, a powerful skill that ignores enemy affinities. I'm not the biggest fan of almighty skills in Megaten and the Ice/Dark path kind of sucks so... Upbeat it is!

She's more upbeat.

You're right... I guess I wasn't acting like myself, huh. But you said you had something on your mind? What is it?

Hmm... Well, I guess I'll show you two first. You see, I picked up something interesting lately.

What is this...? Is that... a gun?

Looks like one, doesn't it? But when you unlatch this part...

Wait, so this is a PC?

I'm calling it a "gun-type PC" for now, but that's really all I know about it.

Ah... the COMP, they have different forms through the series but their function is always the same.

But, what does this have to do with moving our HQ?

Ever since I obtained this, I've noticed some suspicious people following me around. This PC is the only reason I can think of that would explain that. It's more just to soothe my nerves, though.

But is thing really all that special...?

I don't know. I plan on doing some research. I'm glad you two showed up so early. I'm going back to the junk store I bought this thing from. Watch over the trailer while I'm gone, okay? If we can learn what this gun-type PC really is, we might be able to figure out who those suspicious guys are, too.

Just call it a GUMP, it's not that hard :colbert:

I'll leave the gun PC with you. I don't want to risk getting back on those guys' radar. I'll see you later.

Huh? Hold on, Leader... Geez he called us just so we could babysit the trailer for him? Still, I doubt anyone else will show up soon...

Leave.

Well, we can't do anything right now. We might as well wait for the others to get here.

Gun-type PC

......... It's not working. It is broken? Well, we don't have anything else to do.

Oh I know! Let's check out Paradigm X. You just got the license, so let's see what the big deal is. That'll pass the time until Lunch and the others get here. Come on, let's do it!

Paradigm X

Ha ha, I'm kind of excited!

And that's it for this update. We'll explore Paradigm X in the next one! :atlus:

Update 2: Paradigm X

"User Counter"

First-time users will receive an explanation of Amami City's network. Please listen carefully.

This Paradigm X introduction is a bit long. Bear with me here, okay?

This guy has a sick artwork made by Kazuma Kaneko. Why Captain Paradigm? Who knows.

Let me tell you about the network that connects the beloved citizens of Amami City to Paradigm X.

Thanks to this network, you can enter Paradigm X freely from your home PC and meet with your friends online. With no lag and a nigh-zero percent rate of packet loss, the intranet of Amami City makes Paradigm X truly another world!

Does this mean I can't use "I'm lagging bro" as an excuse anymore? drat.

Anything you want can be found on Paradigm X's virtual streets: a movie theater, pet shops... anything! Through your PCs you can access these "cyber-shops" and use them at any time. The city of future never closes! This is truly the life of the future, brought to Amami City by Algon Soft! But, enough from me. It's time for you to experience it for yourself! Now, have a goooooooood time! Hahaha!

It felt like one of those job interviews where they have a whole presentation with a colorful character telling you about the company policies.

You may be surprised by the intense quality of the virtual city. When you want to end your time in Paradigm X, please return here. And... Have fun!

"Paradigm X"

...Wow!

So this is Paradigm X! It's wonderful! Hey Tomato, where should we go first?

I mean... The game was originally released in 1997, I guess it looked impressive back then.

Well, she said I could return here if I wanted to exit Paradigm X.

I'm out of here.

Hey, Tomato! We haven't seen everything yet! Why are you quitting?

Oh God... that line of dialogue made me remember Hitomi is voiced by Cassandra Lee Morris. I hope you like being bossed around by Morgana again.

Wasn't Paradigm X supposed to be the "City of Tomorrow"?

The retro appearance of the city of tomorrow may surprise you at first. We have purposefully created the illusion of nostalgia to help users remain in a state of relaxation.

Okay, let's fully explore Paradigm X! And I do mean fully. :unsmigghh:

...Crap, is it already this late? I forgot Leader summoned us. If I'm late, Lunch is gonna yell at me.

Huh, another member of Spookies managed to get access to the Paradigm X beta.

"Boutique"

Tell me about this place.

Everyone has the desire to transform himself... Here at this store, we present you with all the clothing you'd like to try out. If you find anything you like, please let me know and we'll deliver the real article to you.

It gives the whole place a nostalgic feeling. I'm really relaxed looking around this place. This is very useful information. I'm glad I came to inspect the place.

Also, I heard there's an art museum and a park, and you can go on trips around the world from the "theater". But I'm looking forward to the Haunted Mansion the most. I'm a sucker for that kind of stuff.

Well, let's check on the forums. Starting with...

Beach forum...?!

"Forum 2"

This forum's supposed to feel like you're at a beach resort.

Nothing beats the real thing, but this place isn't half-bad.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. So this is the Beach Forum. If it was an ugly place, I wouldn't come back, but I think I can live with this.

You can access the rest of the forums from here.

What about him?

If you don't know what to do, you should go and ask him.

"Paradigm Bank"

Oh no...

Where do I left my money?

You are the new Paradigm X beta tester, Mister Pawah, correct? I'm sorry, but you are currently unable to use of our facilities while we verify your ID.

Tell me how this place works.

Customers can leave their e-money with us at Paradigm Bank. The e-money you leave with us will gradually grow in value according to our set interest rates. You can deposit or withdraw your e-money any time you like.

This sounds like a scam, I'm out of here.

It's a VR relationship compatibility program. It told me that I was most compatible with some fancy old guy in a red cape. That's totally my type! I wonder if there's anybody like that actually in this city...?

When I'm here, men start talking to me just because I'm using a female avatar. Is it like that in the outside world, too? That's disturbing, isn't it?

It's pretty much the same nowadays...

Greetings, Netizen! Have you gotten used to navigating Paradigm X? If you can't move smoothly, try using the B Button and the L and R buttons. But remember, you can't go through a door sideways or backwards! Farewell!

Mfw when a 1997 game had strafing and the DS version of Etrian Odyssey doesn't...

Man, I didn't think I'd win a beta license. I'm so lucky!

Hm?

"Virtual Club"

I-Is this what love feels like...? :ohdear:

This is your first time here, isn't it? Let me tell you about the Virtual Club, then! There are a variety of virtual reality attractions for you to enjoy here. Just pick the attraction you would like to try, then enjoy! So, what attractions do we have? First, there's the VR Art Museum. Not only can you enjoy the wonders of the paintings, but you can go inside!

Next is our horror attraction, the VR Haunted Mansion! Can you escape the clutches of evil? Hee-ho!

Oh my God. She even says hee-ho! :ohdear:

We also have VR Tours, where you can travel the virtual world, and a VR Park where you can enjoy a stroll in a maze. There's also Dungeon Q, a giant quiz game, and Love Club, a compatibility test to find your perfect mate. Why don't you give them a try?

There are a variety of virtual reality attractions for you to enjoy here. Just pick the attraction you would like to try, then enjoy! Select "Start" from the menu, then select from the two groups. From there, you'll see the individual attractions. Pick one, and off you go! Couldn't be easier, hee-ho!

I'm interested in the VR tours.

This attraction lets you enjoy tours of various famed sightseeing spots from around the world, ho. But, unfortunately, it's not available yet. It will open with the public launch of Paradigm X. Sorry. VR Tours is brought to you by a partnership with Leon Automotive, ho!

Foreshadowing is a narrative device--

What about the Haunted Mansion?

The VR Haunted Mansion will be opening soon, hee-ho! It won't be much longer.

Okay, then take me to the Art Gallery.

Enjoy your stay at the VR Art Museum!

"VR Art Museum"

With that music, even an Art Museum can be scary. We will get access to the rest of the attractions as the game goes on.

Here you can enjoy paintings in a relaxing environment that only virtual reality can provide. Soon, we will be implementing a feature that will allow our guests to enter into the paintings themselves. Enjoy your stay...

:magemage:

I think there are fairies in that painting. Beautiful, winged little girls.

"Beautiful, winged little girls?" Sorry, doesn't ring a bell. :allears:

Don't you think so too? I can't wait to go inside. I bet it'll be so magical.

Behind her we have Ghost Waterfall, one of the paintings you can enter. It's not possible yet, unfortunately.

This guy probably thinks AI generated art is the future. :dumbbravo:

Well...

There's nothing else to do here, let's go upstairs.

Staring at it, it does feel like I'm being pulled in... I want to try it out, but I'm also scared that I won't be able to come back out.

Sector Horologium?

Another painting we'll be able to access after a while.

A juggler is someone who keeps objects in a state of constant motion by tossing and catching them in the air. The painting really captures his cheerful, yet mischievous aura.

Hello.

No.

It's great here. This is my favorite spot. I feel at peace when I'm here.

Yes, I am.

Then you probably understand. I need to take an entrance exam next year, and my mom's always on my case about studying. I'm sick of it.

Sounds familiar indeed...

So I pretend to study and come here instead.

And... we have reached the end of the VR Art Museum. The Hee-ho gal mentioned a Casino, so...

"Casino"

Oh God, there's two of them. Also look at that golden King Frost in the back.:swoon:

It's your first time here, isn't it? Let me just explain all the things you can do here, then! You trade in money for coins, and you can use coins to play all kinds of exciting casino games. Which casino games, you ask...? First, there's VS. Poker. You play 5-card draw poker against opponents. Believe in the heart of the cards! Hee-ho! We also have Video Poker, which you can play on your own. Play your cards right, and you get to talk about all the coins you won! Next up are the slots. You spin the reels and try to land a jackpot, Hee-ho! We have two types of slot machines, Jack Slot and King Slot. Then there's the dice game. Use the power of frost magic to help you guess what the next roll's going to be, Hee-ho!

I... Uh... That was a lot of info for a newcomer. :stare:

So let's get started! is what I would normally say, but... Did you just get your license recently hee-ho? You aren't registered as a user yet. The system should recognize you as a registered user soon, so just hang tight and come back then!

I'll be honest with you, I never bothered using the Casino. I know it has some ultimate equipment but... Look, If I ever return here to gamble, I'll write a mini-update.

Enjoy your stay at the VR Park. Oh, I almost forgot. Only a portion of the VR Park is currently available. The rest will be open soon.

"VR Park"

I love that song... At least this place isn't as creepy as the VR Art Museum.

Ah, yes, we're currently growing a Symbolic Tree in the center of the VR park...

No

I see. Well, let me tell you about it. Our Symbolic Tree, the Omphalos, is growing in the middle of the VR Park. Omphalos "grows" by gathering all the "wishes" of the people who visit the park. So you see, we're encouraging users to visit Omphalos and make wishes. What would you wish for?

To get better at writing.

It's going to be a while until we can properly explore the VR Park.

Same...

I wish I could just... stay here... everyday... and not go... to work... and...

Are you okay?

.... so tired...

Once all the areas are open, I'm sure I could spend the whole day dozing off in here.

Why is everyone so eepy?

Whenever my husband and I go on vacation, it's always so crowded and expensive. Spending time here is so much better.

What if I get lost?

Use Mapper.

Hey, you, can I just ramble at you for a while? I just have a sudden urge to get some things off my chest.

Imagine saying no.

Thank you, young man. You see, to tell you the truth, I really didn't want to move to this city. Personal reasons forced me to close my family business, and I didn't have a choice. I'm an office custodian now. My son refused to carry on my business, so I had a feeling it would come to this sooner or later. I dream that one day my son will rethink his ways and come back to take over the store, and we'll all be a family again.

Reading that made me tear up a bit while I was recording the footage.

Thank you for listening to my story. If only my son was more like you. Well, he's not going to change.

"Dungeon Q"

There are five questions total! Miss a single one, and you're out! Now, good luck...

The what now...? Uhm... No?

OH COME ON!

Too bad! I hope you try your mind again!

:argh:

Okay I'll just... skip ahead a bit.

:peanut:

This should be interesting...

"Love Club"

That music really sets the mood, huh. There are two paths in this minigame, let's go over the male path first.

What the gently caress is that opening question? :thunk:

"Love Club Results"

You're the studious type, always seeking to improve yourself. When you get tired, she will certainly be someone you can lean on! But remember you need to learn how to take breaks! Please try the Love Club again. Goodbye!

Heh, good to see my mindset hasn't changed since the first time I played this game. Let's go over the female path now. Hm, why? Well... The developers cared enough to put all this inside Paradigm X and as a player I feel compelled to show it!

Bruh.

What the...? Huh, this is new.

quote:

You want to be a little over your head in love. Maybe you long for a love as hot as a fire. He's capricious and sometimes even completely changes the way he looks, which keeps a relationship fresh. He has many secrets, but you shouldn't worry about it. Trying to find out too much about him may turn him away. Please try the Love Club again. Goodbye!

"Forum 1"

Just as there are rules in public bathhouses, there are rules to the internet. These conventions that help facilitate polite communication with each other are known as "netiquette."

Whenever I play Paradigm X on the PC, my parents keep telling me I should be studying... But that's not very convincing, coming from people who can't use a computer! It's the Digital Age now, suckas!

Ooh, so this is one of these traditional Japanese baths! But why would they have one here? Aha! It must be a traditional place of communication and relaxation! That's interesting. There's nothing like this back in my country.

Yoooooo! Nippon Ichi!

I wish I was a bird, able to fly around wherever I wanted to...

Same...

...Oh. There's a dandelion here. Haha, how cute.

Nobody can tell who I really am in here, so I'm going to speak my mind.

To be honest... Yeah, a little.

I might have a young avatar, but I'm actually pretty old. Of course half the draw of Paradigm X is being able to become someone new. I like this experience.

Remembering the old times can be a hell of a drug.

People here don't look like what they really look in real life. So, I made myself look different, too.

"Fortune Teller"

Your lucky color is silver. For extra lucky today, be kind to animals. If you are lost, come visit this old man. I shall tell you your fortune.

If being kind to animals gives me luck, I must be the luckiest person ever. By the way, this fortune teller will give you tips about your next destination. Feel free to stop by in case you stop playing for a while and have no idea what to do.

Can I get a virtual pet?!

"Kingdom House"

This is a digital pet shop, and I sell digital pets. You see all these little guys here? They're called Mechi. Aren't they adorable?

I mean...

Unfortunately, all of these are reserved for other customers. Every single one! So, I don't have any I can sell you right now. Sorry.

Rokugoru will gives you quests where you need to get a specific demon, but that is much much later.

Phew, took a while to actually get here.

"Airvision"

Vice-Minister Nishi, head of the Amami City "model city" project, was there and spoke about what more is to come.

Aren't you a Fire Emblem villain?

Being able to celebrate Paradigm X's completion with all of you is a momentous honor and a pleasure. It has been five years since our project began... and now, Amami City has grown to become the envy of the entire world. What that means to you is that the people of this city are the most technologically advanced in the world. Think of the Citizen IDs registered to you as proof of this. We, and Algon Soft, promise you all a life of light and convenience.

After Mr. Nishi's speech, Mr. Kadokura, director of Algon Soft, the developers of Paradigm X, spoke. The following was taken from his comments on the completion of Paradigm X.

Some of our beta testers may be viewing this broadcast in Paradigm X itself.

Is that it? Your buddy Validar had a lot more to say!

The people of Amami City definitely have a future to look forward to.

Well, that was interesting. We have nothing else to do in Paradigm X at the moment, let's go back.

"Suspicious Occasion"

"Redman"

If I hadn't been here, that light would have stolen your soul, too.

:stare:

But you aren't the only one. All humans have forgotten their souls.

...?

Do you wonder who I am? This is not the first time our paths have crossed, Pawah.

However, this time I have come to warn you of this city's coming catastrophe... It seems I must hurry. There is someone thirsting for human souls, and that light was its doing... At this rate, the souls of all who live in this city shall become his.

It turns out Kinap isn't just his name. A Kinap is a native American legend in Algonquian folklore. Huh, so that's it's called Algon Soft. :psyduck: If anyone knows more about the topic let me know!

While I can see that the day is coming, and I am powerless to stop it. I need your help. But, right now you cannot understand me or the light that is stealing souls. Therefore, I invite you on a Vision Quest.

The Paradigm X theater?

Vision Quests are how souls communicate. Your own soul will touch with souls that have completed their lives on this world. You will learn the truth you need to know during this time. At this point, you will be meeting the soul of a man named Urabe. You will become Urabe, and relive part of his own life. However, the Vision Quest is a perilous journey. Death within the vision means death for you, Tomato Pawah.

Now, go. Open your eyes to the memories laid out before you.

"Algon NS (Vision Quest)"

I LOVE that song, it's such a banger and we're still in the tutorial.

The data I'm looking for should be in the Computer Room on the fifth floor. I'm getting some spikes on the Enemy Sonar. Bes, Puts, Leanan Sidhe... I'm going to need your help.

quote:

Bes: A pygmy-sized Egyptian god. He is said to bring good luck. While a minor god compared to the other Egyptian gods, he was worshiped by many folk. He started off as a protector of the pharaoh, but eventually became the protector of all households, regardless of social status. He is also a god of fertility and helps mothers giving birth. He protects newborn children and is said to appear dancing around mothers ready to give birth.

Puts: A fairy said to live in the forests of Australia, telling timber cutters which tree to cut. He is white-haired and small, and often spotted on the top of fir trees. If you cut down the tree he is on, gold will come flowing out of it. If you do not listen to him, however, it is said you will lose your life. There is a tale of a timber-cutter who brought home gold coins, only to have them turned into hazelnuts, causing him to die of shock.

Leanan Sidhe: A beautiful faerie of Irish lore whose name means faerie mistress. She drains the life of her lovers in return for granting them artistic inspiration.

What are they thinking? Letting demons loose in the building... I've got a really bad feeling about this. I should hurry.

I hate having to do this but... This is the end of Update 2. Next up, Algon NS and proper gameplay!:atlus:

Frozenen posted:

I really like how Soul Hackers starts. It takes a while to get going, but this was the point that really grabbed me. I didn't bother exploring paradigm x that much though, it's a pain to navigate and I remember it being rather large.

But the shift from a very cyberpunk aesthetic with the digital city and focus on technology to a wolf god inviting you to a vision quest and the rest of the game mixing these things wildly kept me interested through the end. But I can absolutely understand people giving up, the game quickly gives you really large dungeons that are a pain to navigate. One of the later ones in particular is absolutely horrible, but more can be said on that once you get there.

If we talk about lengthy Megaten intros I think Strange Journey takes the prize. Luckily, after the first Vision Quest the game has a very good pacing.

I never really bothered exploring Paradigm X all that much on previous playthroughs either, but I wanted to show as many dialogues as possible during the LP. Thanks for leaving a comment and I hope to see you when I arrive to that lengthy endgame dungeon. :)

Update 3: Vision Quest 1: Alma Capture

"Algon NS (Vision Quest)"

Time to do our first Vision Quest. On the upper left corner, we have the current moon phase. By each step you take, that number will go up and down until you eventually reach a Full Moon/New Moon. This affects various things such as demon negotiation and the power of some skills, but the most notorious change is the music. Using Algon NS as an example, during a Full Moon you can hear a female voice singing. Unfortunately, the video I linked is the normal version so you'll have to play the game to notice the rest. The upper right corner displays our Yen and Magnetite-- Wait, Magnetite? That's right, this game has two currencies and you can't buy everything using only one of them. If you're not familiar with Megaten and are wondering about the uses of Magnetite... Don't worry, I'll talk about it later.

On the left side of the screen we have the enemy radar which is currently green, meaning that the enemies have a lower level compared to the party. Keep in mind this isn't part of the normal UI, but an app in Urabe's COMP.

Finally, we have our map. Since this is the tutorial, the entire building is already mapped. Now, let's have a look at our demons.

Bes is a jack of all trades, having healing and recovery skill, Phys damage and Confusion. His stats are not too impressive but he has high HP and decent MP for a frontliner.

Magic
Diarama: Restores a high amount of HP.
Charmdi: Cures Charm.

Extra
Roundhouse: Deals Strike damage to the front row starting from the right side. Units on the left side take reduced splash damage.
Valiant Dance: Attempts to inflict Confusion to the enemy front row.

Bes skills are pretty average and the personality type doesn't matter since it's already at level 5.

Puts is more of a physical user

Magic
Markdi: Cures Mark.

Extra
Gun Beam: Marks the enemy.
Gun Phone: Deals Gun damage to a single target with splash damage. Has a chance to inflict Confusion.
Meat Bullet: Deals Strike damage to a single target. User takes severe damage as well.

God I hate Meat Bullet so much... Avoid it if you can, it deals a lot of damage but using it will leave your demon on 1HP. Gun Phone is nice I guess.

Leanan Sidhe stats lean more to Magic and Agility, making her a good mage and fast healer.

Magic
Mabufu: Deals Ice damage to an entire row.
Zan: Deals Force damage to a single target.
Media: Restores HP to the entire party.
Posumudi: Cures poison.

Extra
Lullaby: Attempts to inflict Sleep to all enemies.

Unlike Bes and Puts, Leanan Sidhe is a bit more recognizable if you've played games like Persona 5 or Shin Megami Tensei V.

Oh wow, that was a quick random encounter.

"Battle Conversation"

A few Megami Tensei titles do this really cool thing where the battle theme won't start until you either press the Fight command or the battle properly starts.

Unlike newer entries we have 6 slots for party members including your main character. Once you trigger a random encounter you can: Fight the enemy, talk to them, use your COMP to check their resistances, escape the battle and attack the enemy using your equipped weapons/repeating the same commands you used on the previous turn.

Another cool feature is the Loyalty meter, raising loyalty on Devil Summoner was kind of annoying and I wouldn't blame anyone for disliking it. On Soul Hackers there are 5 types of personalities and they mostly depend on your direct commands. Once you picked all your actions the battle will start.

"Urabe Battle"

Combat in Soul Hackers is fast paced and fun, random encounters shouldn't last more than a couple of turns. Urabe also has a unique battle theme and it's pretty drat good!

After the battle you get EXP and Magnetite. Something to keep in mind is that demons do NOT level up. Only humans can get EXP.

I don't have the skill to hack it... It looks like I can't get a ride directly to the Computer Room. If I remember correctly, there's an emergency stairway on the southeast side. I'll try that route.

I welcome you, Pawah.

Oh, Kinap is here too. Rooms with a T are terminal rooms, here you can save your game or change your equipped COMP apps. Since we're on a Vision Quest, we're also allowed to heal our entire party for free.

Heal me, please.

Close your eyes.

Urabe's party recovered.

I pray for your luck.

Right outside the Terminal room we find our first treasure "chest." They come in different forms and are usually worth the effort. Now, you don't have to do what I'm about to do but...

I'll put a marker on each one. Did you know this game had markers? It's probably one of the most useless features I've ever seen. So, why did I put one? I Dunno, playing too much Etrian Odyssey changes people.

Oh, hello there, Wendigo. We already saw what happened during a fight, let's try talking now.

ME WANT ASK SUMMONER...

I'd rather create.

GRRRRR... THAT LIE! IT NATURAL LIKE BREAKING!

Excuse me?

ME MAD. ME NO TALK WITH YOU.

If a demon gets angry at you, they will either attack or refuse to talk with you again.

He looks like a trustworthy fellow.

I found this on the ground earlier and didn't have any use for it, m'boy. So, you can have it.

What's this?

Do you know about that magne-whatsits stuff? It's actually very precious to us. I'll give you this 152 MAG. Use it wisely.

Sometimes demon negotiation can have happy endings.

It's impossible to get lost in the third floor. I mean, just look at the map...

You're just the person I'm looking for, though. I need to ask you something. Answer me and I won't harm you. You try some funny business, and I can't guarantee your safety. Understand?

Urgh... Okay, okay. I'll talk...

How do I get to the Computer Room on the fifth floor from the emergency stairway?

Ah, the Computer Room... From the emergency exit, there should be a door to the far left. It's past there...

Thanks, now let me help you. Get the hell outta the building now. If you see any demons, run.

D-Demons? Are you serious!? I wasn't even supposed to be here today! O-Okay. Run! Got it!

After you walk away, this happens.

Using demons to kill innocent people... Killing their own security guards... They haven't changed a bit. It's only been a year since I left this place... I was a fool for thinking that anything would be different.

4F is, once again, a straight line. Here, I decided to talk to one of the demons again.

I'd heard that you left the Society, but it looks like you're still a summoner. By the way, what might you be doing in a place like this? I'm sure it has something to do with your work...
But if you want to live a long life, I suggest you don't get yourself involved in any shady business. I mean, you are already being targeted by your former employers... Well, if you do survive, we may meet again. Farewell.

Oddly kind for a demon.

Some of the demons here recognize Urabe, and a few of them will get a free turn if you try talking to them. Luckily, Urabe's demons can deal with it.

The Computer Room I'm looking for is on this floor.

We have some stairs but they just lead to a dead end, the roof.

Encounters here are pretty much the same but you get at least 2 of the same demon which can be a bit more dangerous if you're still learning.

Well, here goes nothing...

Nemissa... This is it... What kind of program is this? The file size is massive... It won't fit on my COMP...

Crap... If I delete the demons in my summoning program, that should give me enough space...

Why would you...?

Huh!? What was that!? Is this program... alive?

[???] I didn't think you'd have the spine to com waltzing back in here... Now, what's a traitor like you doing here?

...!? Who's there!?

"Finnegan's Entrance"

[???] You've eluded the Society's grasp up til now... And it all ends with such disappointment.

:suspense:

I don't know why you betrayed us, but it's a bad joke. You're nothing now.

Hmph, I see the Society's still using the powers of Summoners for evil.

Heh. You're in no position to talk. Has the tragedy that took your family finally scared you?

Y-You miserable cretin! Don't you dare talk about my family!

I... I can't die here! I must get this data to Kinap...

Once you exit the room, Urabe starts moving on his own, the only control you have is when advancing dialogues.

And I can't even summon anything... I need to get the hell outta here!

I know what'll pick you right up. Wanna play with my demons?

What the!? Tch. One of Finnegan's drat mutts... Feeling our oats today, are we?

(poo poo. I don't even stand a chance against a pissant like him right now... I have no choice but to run!?)

Aw what's wrong, Urabe? Hehe... If you wait around, Finnegan'll catch up to youuuu. Or would you prefer dying at my hands instead? Muahahahaha!

Dammit... I knew I shouldn't have deleted all my demons! This way's no good... Where else can I run...?

...But I won't die in vain. Luckily, they haven't realized I took the data...

You get to choose the password, pick whatever you want as long as you can remember it.

"Urabe's Death"

Tch, dammit!

...Just one last question before you have to leave. What were you doing in that room?

Heh. As if the actions of a worm could affect our organization in the slightest. Pathetic. When you meet your disappointed family in the afterlife, be sure to say hi for me. They'll know who I am.

Ice cold :stare:

Keep hell warm for me, Urabe!

How pathetic. I lost myself in my family's deaths...

I thought that my life was meaningless...

Yet now... I only want...

To live...

"Redman"

Do you call yourself Urabe, resenting the mistake you made which led to your family's death, yet still yearning to live? Or are you a soul ready to awaken again with newfound resolution born in your heart?

Life is just a string that drags lasting will along. That is how will transcends lives and endures through time.

Now, awaken. Call on the soul that is sealed before you. I am Kinap, he who talks with souls, he who guides souls.

The souls of fallen warriors will lead you to your next Vision Quest. Until then farewell.

And thanks to Urabe's soul we get our first level up, a straight jump to Lv. 7

An NPC gives an explanation about the stats later, but here's a brief description anyway.

ST Strength determines your physical damage. Does not affect gun damage.
IN Intelligence affects the accuracy of your magic attacks and also its power, but only slightly. It also increases your resistance against ailments and magic damage.
MA Magic is the opposite of Intelligence. This mainly affects your magical attack power and gives you a little bit of accuracy. Has no effect on consumable items.
EN Endurance affects your physical defense and raises your HP.
AG Agility affects your turn speed and evasion. It also gives you a minor boost in Sword accuracy. Does not affect gun accuracy.
LU Affects dodge and sword/gun accuracy. Very little is known about this stat other than the previously mentioned effects.

So, how to build your character? If you've played older Megami Tensei titles the answer tends to be ST, EN and AG. However... Soul Hackers MC is fairly weak and his best role is a dedicated support and item user. Demons can't use items and you're the only one with the COMP. My personal recommendation is this.

ST is good if you really want to use your sword. In my opinion the MC has better things to do other than damage.
IN can be good if you're having issues against magic damage or status ailments.
MA is completely worthless on the MC since he's unable to use magic. If you want to wear his best armor set, you'll need at least 10 MA. You can only get this armor very late in the game so don't rush it. If you have some spare points and are interested, level up your MA up to 8. There's a male-only piece of armor that increases your MA by 2 and this allows you to wear the set.
EN is very important. Your MC works great as a frontline tank and if he dies its game over. Having more HP and durability can help to avoid losing progress.
AG is by far his best stat. Once you're in battle, using items and the COMP is key to survive and nothing better than being really fast to outspeed enemies and even bosses. It also affects your evasion, this paired with high EN and good armor can turn you into a dodgetank.
LU is... LU. Like I mentioned very little is known about this stat so I wouldn't recommend it unless you're actively using Guns with low accuracy or just want to dodge a lot of attacks.

If you want a Phys attacker go like this. Focus on ST and AG, and put a few points into EN from time to time.

I'll go with this.

"Hideout"

Huh?

You stopped moving all of a sudden, like you died or something. What happened? I kept calling you but you didn't respond. I was really worried.

Poor Hitomi...

I'm fine.

Really...? I hope that's true.

I know what I need to do.

You do remember the password, right?

If you somehow forgot the password you created 2 minutes ago, the game will give you a hand.

"Possession by Nemissa"

So you let me out... ummm... Tomato, was it?

Y-Yes?

Thanks! I really owe you one. It was so stuffy in there, being crammed in that tiny place for so long. It's a bit cramped here too, but it's way better now.

Nemissa is voiced by Laura Bailey, who also voices Lucina from Fire Emblem, Rise Kujikawa from Persona 4 and Chun-Li from Street Fighter. I gotta say, her Nemissa performance is just...*chef's kiss* amazing. The game wouldn't be the same without her.

You're not Hitomi?

Hitomi? Oh, you mean this body? From now on, it's Nemissa. I can't move around without a body. I'm glad there was a body just within reach.

But still, who locked Nemissa away in there? Whoever it is has some nerve. I gotta go find that jerk. When I find him, I'm gonna beat his face in.

Get out of Hitomi's body!

Huh? No way! Not when I'm finally free! Don't you get in--

U-Um, maybe if we use the gun-type PC again, we can seal her again.

Huh? Y-You're kidding, right!? Hey, stop it!

:getin:

Even if you saved my life, I won't let you do that to Nemissa!

Whoa, whoa, whatcha fighting over?

"Being a bit rash" is quite an understatement. Just like Hitomi, I have no idea what Six does to be considered a member of Spookies.

It's pretty rare to hear Hitomi raise her voice.

Now that's more like it.

Sorry I'm la--whoa, you dyed your hair, Hitomi!?

Shut up! Who asked you!

Isn't she loveable? :allears:

S-Sorry! It looks good on you, I didn't know you were so upset about it. Where are Leader and Yu-Ichi?

Probably just lagging behind as usual. I think I have a good way to kill some time. Hey, Tomatoe, you using the PC right now? I'm gonna shut it down for a sec.

:smith:

Let's see... It was here... All right, it should fit in the same slot... Just gotta pop this sucker out...
Okay... Got it... Now to just put this in... And that should boost the processing speed.

Not that I care, but all the PCs in the city are using the designated parts, right? Is it cool to swap it out like that?

Again with the Krypto chip...

I'm just saying. It's not my fault if Leader gets ticked at you for taking an unnecessary risk.

So, it's all good as long as he doesn't, then. We'd be a lame hacker group if we all just used standard equipment.

Eh, suit yourself. I'll be cleaning my guns.

Whatever, I'm gonna take off. I can't waste time sitting around like this.

:siren:

Hm? Who's that?

Yes?

H-Hello!? Is that you, Tomatoe? It's me Spooky.

I'm at the Algon NS building right now, but something's gone wrong. Th-This place is full of m-monsters...

...!? Whoa--

.....

Oh boy

Is Leader okay...? Did he say monsters!?

Leader is your friend, right? He was talking about monsters...

Algon NS is a branch office of Algon Soft, right? What's leader doing there?

I don't know, but... That call was no joke. Leader was dead serious.

What'd he mean by monsters? Is that code for cops or security?

That's the most confusing part, but... We can't ignore this. We gotta go help Leader.

Help? At the Algon NS building? You sure about this?

(Hey, I thought you were leaving!?)

(Oh, shut up! I wanna go, so I'm going!)

(I haven't been outside in such a long time. I'm aching for a fight. Don't worry, your body is ready!)

(You don't need to use my body! Find another one, please! I don't like fighting!)

(You can't tell Nemissa what to do! This is my body now, forever! You should just get used to it!)

I love how the protagonist is playing Paradigm X or something, not even caring about those two arguing.

H-Hey, no need to start hopping around over there. We can all tell you're ready to go. You can come along. Aren't you guys worried about barging in empty-handed, though? I'll lend you all some of my collection.

I never thought I'd ever use these in actual combat... Haha, is my collection badass or what?

Well, we're all ready to go, then. The Algon NS building is at the north side of Nikamimon. Let's roll.

Oh, it's over. Man, what a long conversation. Anyway, Hito...missa? gets some levels too.

Unless you care about her ultimate armor (which requires at least 12 in every single stat except for Luck) try to focus on Intelligence, Magic and Agility.

Let's go.

"2D Field"

See that icon on the second screen?

Those are the COMP mods the sender was talking about. You can change the difficulty, reveal all maps without having to explore by yourself, being able to have any demon in your party regardless of their alignment and having enemy demons already analyzed. I won't touch the rest but I'll raise the difficulty because hey, why not?

Anyway, that's all for now. Sorry for taking this long to write a single update. :ohdear: The drawing classes and not having internet connection for over a week really messed up my update schedule. Next up, Algon NS! Again...! :atlus:

My first experience playing this game was the untranslated PS1 version, so Paradigm X and the Vision Quest were a surreal experience to say the least.

I find the Spooky's to be pretty amusing as a gang. Despite that badass truck and remarkable branding they have, they prove to be surprisingly rag-tag throughout most of the game. I have no memory of the Hard mode of this game, which probably means I did not set it when I played it. It'll be interesting to see how that affects things.

While the "usefulness" of a couple of members is questionable at first, I think the game does a fantastic job making every one of them do something relevant at some point.

I always kept the difficulty at normal, but turned it down during demon fusion/summoning (it costs a fee to fuse or summon demons, and the prices are obnoxiously steep, in my opinion. Easy decreases them, so I can only assume that Hard... well...)

Oh right! I forgot that it's more expensive to buy demons from the compendium while on Hard. I may change it back to normal outside of battles, since I'll definitely need a lot of MAG to tackle the Extra content.

I've always disliked Hard modes in MegaTen games increasing prices because they always just do a flat multiplier instead of giving everything a unique price. It only succeeds in making things harder in the early game, where you have to make some tough choices with selling items to obtain useful stuff, and just makes it incredibly annoying in the late game where money is easy to get but the prices are so inflated it takes about an hour or two to get it all together.

Another awful example is Persona 4 Golden, Very Hard reduces your EXP and money which makes the game feel like a slog. At least you can modify your own difficulty to remove that. Can't say the same about SMT Nocturne! But hey, least there's a mod to keep the normal mode prices.

Frozenen posted:

I am very annoyed by hardmodes in megaten games making compendium more expensive. I get that the idea is to make it harder to be flexible with demons. But in practice all it does is basically force you to either grind a lot, go die a bit to see what is needed or looking up ahead of time what weaknesses/strengths you need for a certain stretch of the game. The increased difficulty is generally a pretty fun puzzle in itself, and forcing a grind for money is just boring.

And finally Nemissa enters the stage! She really is a fun protagonist, and carries most of the burden of having a personality on account of the main character having to be a bit of a cipher as far as I remember.

Yeah, I completely forgot about the compendium. I'll leave the game on hard mode during exploration and fighting, while changing it back to normal when I need to buy demons or magnetite. At least it's available from the start unlike SMT IV...

Nemissa is probably one of the most recognizable characters in the entire franchise and she actually grows as a character as the game goes on! Which is surprising considering how rude she is at the start. From what I've been playing on hard she's still a powerhouse but can't oneshot enemies unless the demon is weak to the element she's using.

Hyahahaha! Failure as a human! Failure as a human!
Mini-Update: Nemechi

In the previous update we unlocked COMP hacks and Nemechi. So, what the hell is a Nemechi?

"Nemechi"

Unlike 99% of the soundtrack, this track was composed by Ryota Kozuka.

I'm a program that collects D-Souls so you can get new demons. So you're Tomato Pawah? That's an okay name, I guess.

I'm gonna collect all the D-Souls I can, so I can learn more about humans. Let's get started.

Nemechi is your usual StreetPass feature. You can trade your play coins in exchange for D-Souls. To get playcoins you need to walk around with your 3DS in sleep mode.

Here you can buy unique demons, the ones you're seeing right now are the Devil Summoner versions! To be honest, I prefer this Pixie over the SMT 1 design...
While I do have a 3DS I'm not going to transfer my save file over and over again. If you're using Citra go to: Emulation, Settings, System and you should see an option to add Play Coins. If I remember correctly you can have up to 300.

And voilá! We have play coins now.

If you have doubts about Nemechi you can ask it some questions. Don't worry, dear reader, I'm not going to info dump you (this time :argh:) but if you take the time to read all of it...

You get D-Souls for free, we can use these D-Souls to buy the exclusive demons Nemechi has.

Since both Pixie and Knocker are demons you can find in Algon NS, I won't be buying those. Instead I'll get this little guy called Oliver Zero. He's an alternative version of Oliver, a demon based on a real chimpanzee who was said to be a a mix of chimpanzee and human. This was eventually debunked.

Magic
Recarmudra: Fully heals HP to the entire party. Kills the User.
Media: Restores HP to the entire party.

Extra
Infinite Taunt: Attempts to raise enemy ATK X2 and reduce its DEF x2
Meat Bullet: Deals Strike damage to a single target. User takes severe damage as well.
Last Resort: Deals heavy Strike damage to all enemies. Kills the user.

Just look at those skills... The person who made Oliver Zero must have been laughing like a maniac the entire time. He even has 69 HP.

I'll exchange some of my play coins for D-Souls now. This has a daily limit, so the more I can get the better. And talking about daily limits...

Nemechi can evolve once per day. In case you need to hasten the process, you can just change the date in your 3DS to ignore this limitation.

Eh...

The Snake is supposed to unlock 4 demons but we only have two, I wonder why? You see, evolving Nemechi doesn't grant access to all demons available to that form. Instead, they depend in your current amount of D-Souls. A few of these numbers are set, but most of them are unknown. Nemechi will always evolve into the Snake form, then it will choose at random between the Male and Female path. Both paths unlock exclusive demons that are not available on the other.

However, evolving Nemechi again won't lock you out of demons from the previous form. Instead it will automatically unlock them as long as you have enough D-Souls. Because of this, it's better to keep evolving Nemechi while saving up D-Souls.

Once you reach their final form, you'll have the option to return to the base Nemechi and start again.

Something to keep in mind is that both Male and Female paths have ultimate demons, and they're quite expensive. According to the Wiki, these 2 demons cost 2500 D-Souls to unlock but in my own testing one of them was unlocked at 1825 D-Souls and the other one unlocked at 3000 D-Souls. If you reach the final Nemechi form, try to unlock the ultimate demon before switching to the other path.

If I remember correctly you can't buy demons that are a higher level than-- YOO IS THAT MOH SHUVUU?!

This is her Devil Summoner version but... :shepspends:

In case you're wondering, no I didn't spend 2 weeks only writing this. I wanted to properly explain Nemechi since I'll be buying demons from time to time. Update 4 should be up soon. I'll be adding the current Nemechi form with the demons it unlocks here. See you in a few hours. :atlus:

Update 4: Algon NS

"2D Field"

You bet.

...Er? You are Hitomi, right? Something seems different about you.

Check this out.

Whoa! You have a license!? Badical! I bet it's awesome!

Paradigm X... That name's supposed to be important, right? What is it...?

It's a virtual world! You get into it on a computer, and you can walk all over and do this cool stuff in it!

Thanks for the explanation!

(There's no time for this, Nemissa! We have to save Leader!)

Huh? What was that, Hitomi?

I love those interactions

I'm pretty sure it's a coyote.

I wonder if it's a special feature for some users? Maybe we'll all be able to choose animal characters later.

Soul Hackers truly was ahead of its time, huh.

Meanwhile, back at home, Tomoko is gaming. There are a few more NPC dialogues but nothing interesting or worth mentioning.

We have a new location, Nikamimon.

There it is, Algon NS.

Although, every couple that goes up there on a date ends up breaking up. Maybe that antenna collects bad vibes or something. If you two wanna stay together, I'd suggest staying away from that place.

Oh, I'm sure the Amami Monolith is a lovely place... :smithicide:

Eh, don't worry about them. They're inseparable. They don't even understand the concept of breaking up.

I know they're supposed to be way more easy to use than they used to be, but man, I still don't get them. But, if you don't learn how to use the new tech, you're going to get left behind in the business world.

They told us not to customize it, but I can't ever imagine needing to tamper with it.

You hear that, Lunch? For some reason, you just had to go and tweak it just that liiiiitle bit extra.

...Shut up, Six. There's never a reason to go mass produced. I'm not a number.

Heh, not only Nemissa and Hitomi have funny interactions.

"Spookies"

Hey, wanna see a video of Jack Frost and his girlfriend dancing with that music in the background? Here you go

We don't have time to turn over every rock looking for him, and we can't afford to get caught ourselves... What should we do?

What are you muttering about? What a pain. Fine, I'll go on ahead.

Hey! Don't go walking off on your own!

I'm not good at sitting here and thinking! Besides, I don't have to take orders from you!

Yes, you do! It's my body! Tomato, help me out here!

Hee-ho?

Hee-ho!

Shut up! None of your business!

Look, calm down. You're right that splitting up would be the most efficient plan.

Lunch has a lot of patience when dealing with Nemissa.

Let's split into pairs, me with Six and Tomatoe with Hitomi.

Don't do anything stupid. Well, that's what my collection is for. Bwahahahahaha!

Honestly, you're the one I'm worried about the most. Anyway, you guys be careful.

"Algon NS (Reality)"

Ah, it feels good to be back. This time with a new dungeon theme, less Magnetite and having our enemy sonar in yellow.

Crap, Finnegan is still here...

Yup, everything's great!

Right, Tomato?

Y-Yeah.

What about you, Lunch? What're you doing here?

Me? I was thinking of heading upstairs... But this elevator's got a security lock on it...

Ha... This type is easy. Hold on... Just gimme a sec...

[Voice] The security lock has been released.

Wow, Lunch, that's amazing! You really are reliable!

(...Whoa. Hitomi's really nervous, huh, Tomatoe? She's trying so hard to act cheerful.)

Men when they get an honest compliment be like

(Not that I can blame her. This is a pretty dicey situation...) Well, be careful. I'm going on ahead.

Being level 7 is not going to help if we're alone. Let's try to recruit this Knocker.

Hmm, are you one of those, whatchacallit, Summoners? Yeah... I reckon that COMP looks mighty durn familiar. Don't recall seeing you before, though. You're a green, aren't ya, sonny boy?

Is it that obvious?

Then why don'tcha let good ol' Knocker teach you a thing or two about talking to demons?

First, you ought to know why you'd wanna talk to one. Well, seeing as how you're a Summoner, you need demons to help you out, right? To get a demon to join you, you gotta make friends with it first. The best way to do that is to talk to it first so's you understand each other. Just like people do!

You got to be careful, 'cause you need to think about what the demon might be thinking. Demons are just like humans, the way they have moods, likes and dislikes. They won't always answer the same way. And now you're probably thinking, "Then how'm I supposed to talk to 'em, dagnabbit!?"

Welp, it's no different than talkin' to another human. If they like you, they'll help you. If they don't, they won't. See? Just like humanfolk. If you want to be friends with a demon, just give 'em the answer you think they'll like hearing. They might not cotton to you at first, but you keep talking , and eventually you'll be havin' a nice chat. Or, if'n you want, you can act all tough and strong. Some demons might be impressed by that instead. If that's your angle, you just give answers you think will get the demon to obey you. Depending on how the jawin' goes, you might get to negotiate with the demon.

Back in the good ol' days, us demons traded in human souls. But times have changed... The exchange rate nowadays is 10 times their level in MAG, or 100 times their level in Yen. That's 'bout what it takes to satisfy demons these days.

Not every demon will join you, neither. There are some downright unsociable demons that won't even think about joining you. You c'n tell if the demon you're jawin' with will join by looking at the upper right of the screen while you talk. If there's a mark to the right of where it shows the demon's name and race... That means there's a chance they'll join you. If there isn't one there, nothin' doing. They have their reasons.

He means this smiley face, by the way.

It might even be your fault they won't join, m'boy! But that doesn't mean you shouldn't talk to 'em. If'n you make a good impression, they might let you go when you're in a pinch, or maybe even give you a little gift.

This refers to talking to a demon you already recruited. Keep in mind that having a dead ally will cause the demon to attack you instead!

Oh, and one more thing. You c'n talk to demons like me 'cause of that COMP thingy you go there. But if that COMP gets lost or broken, you won't be able to talk to demons, so watch out. Anyway, enjoy jawin' with demons!

No idea what he means here, at no point in the game you lose the COMP or anything like it.

Hoho, did I talk your ear off? Hmm, I think I'm out of things to say. Did you catch all that, sonny boy? Oh, one last thing! To show how much I appreciate you listening to me, I'm going to join you. The name's Gen the Knocker, a mischievous Jirae! You can call me Old Man Gen!

You also get experience by recruiting demons. 18 EXP doesn't sound like a lot but...

...it's enough for me and Nemissa to level up! When you level up, you get a full HP/TP restore. Her only skill up to this point was Dia, which is a weak healing skill.

Heh... :unsmigghh:

"Normal Battle"

While the MC is a jack of all trades, master of none.

Nemissa will straight up delete any demons as long as they aren't immune to magic or fire damage. Just look at the damage compared to my sword attack!

I don't know his name, but I've seen his face before. I think it was a year ago or so...

Yup, sounds like Finnegan...

Oh, right... Since we checked these with Urabe they're already opened. Silly me...

Nemissa, please...

What's wrong with you? How are you so calm!? There are monsters all over this building!

I saw them.

...You saw them, and you're still that calm? Erm... Well... It's probably less nerve-racking when you've got two people. I mean, I'm by myself here. Nobody to cover my six or anything.

What about Lunch?

Lunch left me behind like a little punkass! You don't know what I'm going through over here, man! You weren't there!

Really? We bumped into Lunch, and he told us that you ran off on your own at the first sight of a monster.

Wh-What!? He told you that? I-I can't believe he'd lie like that! Hahaha... What a jerk, right?

...I was just messing with you. But, now I know the truth.

Hm? Are you guys here to get through this door? There's no way. I was just taking a look at it, but it has a special security program. You'd need a high-level fake ID to get through here. Now then. I guess I should go find Lunch. See you...

Undead - Facebind
They are zombies of people who enjoy being bound but who only find ecstasy in binding their face and head. This extremely dangerous act resulted in the brain death of its participants via asphyxiation which is perhaps why these facebinders became zombies. Because their zombie form is still bound around the head they're even dumber than the average zombie.

Have you ever wanted fight BDSM zombies? Well, here you go!

:unsmigghh:

Since Lunch hacked the elevator, we can access areas previously locked for Urabe.

Oddly enough, nothing happens if you return to the computer room where Urabe took Nemissa.

Oh, right. I should summon my demons to talk about loyalty. You will need Magnetite to both summon them and move around. Every step you take will cost some Magnetite, you can check how much MAG a demon will use per step using the CP stat.

The emergency exit... It looks like the security's off.

Exactly. Someone deactivated it. And I'm guessing that someone must be Leader. Don't you agree? Anyway, I'm going in. You two be careful.

Behind the unlocked door we find another Terminal and our first Healing Space, here we can fully restore HP/TP, cure ailments or both. These won't charge you Yen, but Magnetite.

The loyalty meter can go up or down depending on your commands. In this case we have 2 Dumb demons on the party. Dumb demons like to do whatever they want, so the fastest way to raise their loyalty is to use the "Go" command.

I personally prefer this Slime design over the green one.

Here I told Oliver to attack, if the text screen is white that means the demon obeyed your command reluctantly.

If it's blue that means they liked your command. Despite being a Dumb demon, the Knocker obeyed me and even liked it! However, this is unreliable so your best bet is to use Go. Hm? Why is it unreliable? Well...

Here I told Oliver to heal with Media and...

This is why Dumb demons are the worst type to work with...

A Balm of Life revives someone with full HP, I'm not wasting such a valuable item with Oliver.

So I used the Healing Space instead. Let's be more careful next time.

We just had a hacking incident recently, and now I'm hearing we've got monsters in the building? This isn't real, right?

People died in Algon NS.

Wait a second... That's right! The hacking incident had mysterious fatalities...! So, maybe... The monsters are real!? Heeeelllllllppppppppp! I have a family! I can't die here!

You two, do whatever you want!

This game has some unique combat animations.

There we go! Trust in Dumb demons and they will be unst-- Wait, Oliver... NO, DON'T DO THAT!

It seems to lead to the basement... I'll go check it out.

Ah, finally! Another friendly demon.

My friends.

FRIENDS PRECIOUS. FEW FRIENDS, LONELY. LOTS FRIENDS, HAPPY!

RAWRRRRRRRRRR...! ME GIVE YOU SOMETHING. GOOD FOR SUMMONER...

Ugh... I hate when demons ask for this kind of thing. Every single time I gave demons a sword I wasn't using ended up with them taking it, telling me it's garbage and running away. In my experience, reaching this point is a dead end...

RAWRRRRRR! YOU NOT HAVE! NO GETTING AROUND IT...

Are you serious...? "Give me Armor" is pretty much the same.

ME SEE... ME DISAPPOINTED. OKAY, ME GIVE UP. RAWRRRRRRRR! ME HAVE NOTHING TO TALK ABOUT NOW. ALL DONE.

You know, I was just wondering if you two were okay. Not like I'm calling for any other reason. Just checking on my team.

...O-Oh yeah. There's something suspicious down below in the basement. Why don't you check it out? Uwaaaaa!!

Why is she smiling...?

...N-Nothing. It's cool. I'm cool. I thought I saw a monster... Ohh my god. You guys better not give me crap about this...

...Anyway, that's all I called for. Nothing else to report. We'll meet up later!

OH CRAP! When you get ambushed the frontline and backline have a chance to switch positions, it's as dangerous as it sounds.

Luckily they're just Pixies. Wait, they're pixies! I can recruit one of them.

That means you're a Summoner, right? I haven't seen you before, so you're probably new at this. Am I right?

Yeah, I'm new.

Oh, so here's where it all starts for you. Well, some demons are anti-social and will never cooperate with you. So if you ever see them, just accept it that you're gonna have to fight them. Well, you've got a long way ahead of you... Aw! I'm too worried about you. I guess I'll help you out.

Oh yeah, I haven't introduced myself yet. I'm Pixie the Fairy. I'll be your demon, so let's do our best!

If you played other Megami Tensei games, you might be surprised when seeing this Pixie. I personally prefer this design over the one from the PSX, also known as SMT Nocturne Pixie. :allears:

Free Magnetite is always welcome.

Kind demons enjoy using healing/recovery skills, buffs and guarding. Wait until their loyalty meter is high enough to use offensive skills. A Kind demon with Lv. 5 Loyalty will guard the protagonist if he's about to take mortal damage!

And we finally reach the basement.

Okay... before challenging Finnegan I should try and get another party member to have a full team. Maybe I can get lucky with a Gally Trot?

Freshly grown.

ME NO CAN GET IT. SUMMONER GET IT FOR ME!

Sweet! Welcome to the t--

ME GET! ME HAPPY! WANT NOW! GOODBYE SUMMONER. ME WILL COME AGAIN.

Never change Beast demons, never change...

While I was looking for a Gally Trot, both my Pixie and Knocker reached Lv. 5 Loyalty!

See, I knew it! She's in that machine! You guys were getting all touchy and stuff!

Remember to talk to the enemy when you have the same demon in your inventory, they'll give you something for free. Also drat! Soul Hackers demons are down bad...

AYY there he is.

:argh: Whatever, I'll just use the drat monkey...

These are my stats for the fight.

"Suspicious Occasion"

Hello there Finneg-- Who the hell is this guy?

Tomato... Who is this? Could he know where Leader is?

"Leader"? Is that the guy who was here earlier? So, you're the ones he called! Hey, that saves me the trouble of having to go look for you. Everything's goin' Carol J's way today!

Carol J, what a name.

You already know about demons, so I can't just let you live. You did manage to get past all of mine, though...

Oh, so you were the one controlling all the demons here? Tell us where Leader is!

Good question. Maybe he's alive, maybe not. So, who are you guys? Your boyfriend look like a Summoner, but I've never seen your faces at the Phantom Society.

A Summoner? You mean Tomato?

Who else would I be talking about? You have a COMP, so you've gotta be a Summoner!

"Event Battle" :siren: "Vs. Carol J" :siren:

Human - Carol J

Nulls: Expel, Death, Mind, Nerve, Curse, Strike
Weakness: None

Skills:
Strength Song: Attempts to inflict Confusion to a single target.
Short Jab: Deals Strike damage to a single target.

Carol J isn't that impressive but he's supposed to be the tutorial boss. This fight teaches you the importance of recruiting demons. Nemissa is very powerful sure, but it will be useless if she gets confused without no one to help. His minions are underleveled versions of normal demons so I won't even bother to talk about them. Oh, and if you're wondering if Oliver killed himself again...

Yes, yes he did...

"Boss Event End"

Tch! Consider yourselves lucky! I'm lettin' you off easy today, but I'll be back!

He never shut up until it was all over...! Huh, he dropped something. What is this?

I wonder what this is...

H-Hang on. This looks like a note. Let's see...

We should ask the others about these later. They might be able to tell us something about them.

"Spookies"

Leader! You're all right!

Y-Yeah. Did you two come to save me?

Something like that. I'm disappointed that it was so easy, though.

But, still, how did--

Heh.

The gun-type PC! Did you get it working!?

It's, uh... A-Anyway, why don't we get out of here? Lunch and Six are here, too.

Yeah... Yeah, you're right. We shouldn't stick around. Let's go.

We get 3 levels after that fight. I put two more points into AG and Nemissa gives MA a single point.

I'll admit, it was a close call... But Tomatoe and Hitomi stepped in and saved me.

H-Hey, I helped, don't forget. I was taking those monsters down, one after an--

We aren't safe here. Cmon, let's get the hell out of this place. We can talk at HQ.

. . .

......

Hey, you can't blame me! We were dealing with monsters!

"Hideout"

I went back to the junk dealer I bought the gun PC from, and asked him where he got it.

...And?

...He said that he just found it on the street by the building. I thought it might have fallen from up there...

So you snuck into the building just on a hunch?

...Nobody would have thought there'd be demons inside.

It was a strange building. It has to be something out of the ordinary.

I'm wondering about that "Phantom Society" Carol J mentioned.

Don't be fooled by Finnegan's imposing aura, the Phantom Society are a bunch of clowns.

drat. Demons, Summoners... It's like something straight out of a comic book or a movie. I don't believe it.

Oh, so this is where we've moved to. Huh? What's with all the serious faces?

Oh, look who decides to come waltzing in AFTER we've done all the work!

What the hell, Six? What're you so mad about? Huh?

I'm with Yuichi, what the hell is his problem?

Whatcha got there, Tomatoe? Some kind of fancy gun? Suh-weet! Lemme see, lemme see!

You can touch it, but don't you dare point it at me unless you want a faceslap!

Whoa, what happened to you, Hitomi? You look so different.

...Yo, I deciphered the code that was on that note.

You did? Nice! What about the card?

It's a license card for something, but that's all I know. The note is where the real treasure is. The code was a web address. Feast your peepers on this, people: "Summoner Net"!

"To all the glorious" Like I said, a bunch of clowns.

This was posted a little while back.

"Dispose..." Is that what they were trying to do to me? Who are these guys...?

The Kuzunoha, huh?

The demon at Amami Bay...?

I don't understand what this part is referring to.

And here's the latest posting, from three days ago.

The Phantom Society... That's the group Carol J mentioned. Ha ha... Ha ha ha...

This is big. I never thought we'd find a secret like this hidden beneath the gleaming facade of this supposed near-utopia.

You were about to be killed a few minutes ago, and you're already laughing...

N-Now hold on a sec. You don't plan on messing with them again, do you?

Nemissa, please...

Wha--!? W-Well, what about you, Hitomi!?

I'm fine. Heck, sounds like it'll be fun. If we hurry up and chase them, we might be able to get some real information out of them.

R-Really...? W-Well... I don't want to have to worry about you guys. I'll come too.

Then it's decided. Our only clues right now are Summoner Net and the COMP...

:siren: :siren: :siren:

H-Hey! What's that sound!?

I-I dunno, it just started beeping all of a sudden...

Lay off! It just started beeping for no reason!

Give me that thing! Ugh, it's getting me on my nerves. Tomato, do something!

Look at the screen.

It says "ERROR" on the screen...

Grasp the grip.

Maybe it has a fingerprint reader or something?

Let's see what the detailed error report says...

"GO TO GOUMADEN" ...Goumaden? I've heard that name somewhere before... Oh! It's the cruise ship chained up in the harbor. The Hotel Goumaden.

But does that boat have anything to do with the COMP?

Tomatoe, you're the one who can make that COMP work. I want you to go to the Goumaden and see what's up.

Isn't that dangerous? If it's something to do with that COMP, it can't be normal.

That's exactly why I want Tomatoe on this job. Only he can fight the demons.

I'm going with him. This sounds like it'll be fun.

Huh? But, Hitomi, it's going to be dangerous...

O-Okay, then... Just... Be careful. Wait, let me give you the license card, too. Maybe it'll be useful somehow.

All right, Tomato, let's get going. To the Goumaden cruise ship!

"2D Field"

Hmm I wonder what the game wants me to do...:magemage:

Funnily enough, if you go to the Fortune Teller he says this. You know, just in case the orange screen wasn't enough.

Do you know who did it?

Many people stepped forward to claim responsibility, but nobody knows who really did it yet. I hope the construction finishes without any more accidents.

Here's a missable conversation between Six and Yuichi if you return to the Hideout before entering the Goumaden.

Ugh, shut up. What is it?

C'mon, man, you promised me last time we met up. So give it!

Give what? I don't remember promising you anything.

What!? You promised! You said you'd give me a cool hacker handle, like everyone else has! You must've come up with something, right? C'mon, give me a name.

You don't get a name! You're still a noob!

Huh!? But... But you promised! C'mon, man! Name me!

C'mon, man, at least TRY to think of something clever for me!

What, now you're complaining? All right, then, here's a name that fits you perfectly. You're obnoxious and you're constantly wearing that stupid hat... We're gonna call you "Habr-r" pronounced "Haberdasher"!

Both of you , shut the hell up.

All right, let's go to the Goumaden.

"Hotel Goumaden"

Is this really the same Goumaden as was in that message? You think we'll be okay in there?

Heeheehee. Looks like fun. Let's take a peek.

Remember her from my Love Club results? I'm not really into maids but she's pretty cute. She's voiced by Stephanie Sheh; who also voices Tharja from Fire Emblem Awakening, Hinata from Naruto and Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon.

O-Oh, we're......

I'm afraid that I cannot allow you to pass without a reservation. Please leave.

Huh, oh, but we're--

Please leave.

Ugh, you're like a lifeless doll! We're here because the COMP told us to come! This is the Goumaden, right?

Master Victor...

If you've played other Devil Summoner titles you may recognize Victor... He's voiced by one of my favourite English voice actors, Patrick Seitz. Starting from Fire Emblem, he voices: Hector from FE Engage, Khan Basilio (that dumbass) from FE Awakening, Jeritza from 3 Houses and Camus Zeke from FE Shadows of Valentia (best FE game btw) A few other roles I enjoyed were Dio Brando from Jojo, Franky from One Piece and Riz from Beastars. I could keep going but I'll just leave it there....

Also, Victor and Mary? Very clever game, very clever...

As you wish.

Now then, guests. Would you show me this COMP you mentioned?

Here...:ohdear:

...I see. It's seen a bit of damage, but I should be able to fix it easily.

You seem to know a lot about the COMP. Are you guys Summoners, too?

Ha, I see. You have only recently set foot in this world, I assume? The doors to the Goumaden are open to all who have COMPs. Allow me to show you my sanctuary, my demon workshop...

Demon fusion...

Demon fusion~

It is a way of combining demons to create an even more powerful demon. When you gain new demons, bring them here. I will show you my techniques.

But we didn't come here to fuse anything. Why are you telling us this?

It will be important once I repair your COMP. However, in exchange, I want you to find me a certain something. An item I require to complete my research.

No way. Why should we do this for you?

Because I am the only one who can repair your COMP. It's not a bad deal, wouldn't you say?

Get wrecked Nemissa.

(We don't really have a choice.)

(What!? I don't want to give in to this nutcase's demands!)

(But we can't leave without the COMP! There's no other option.)

What I need you to obtain for me is kept in the cold storage warehouse at the Warehouse District in Amami Bay. A bloodless lump of earth that holds the breath of life within it, a grotesque doll... Bring it to me.

Some kind of doll? What do you need that for?

That doll is precisely what I require to complete my research. It will also be of some reliable use to you, as well...

It has five blocks of memory that can be used to install software to perform useful functions. I have one such install program here. Take it. Think on what programs you wish to use, and use the Terminals to change your installed software.

If you played Strange Journey, you may be familiar with the App System. The app "Da Vinci" will add the "search option" when fusing demons using the COMP.

As you may already be aware, the COMP has a function that allows you to fuse demons. It is an unstable prototype, however. I don't recommend that you use it too often.

This isn't just flavour text, using the COMP the fuse demons is a bit more risky. You'll have a low chance to get a fusion error, and an even lower chance to lose the demon you were trying to create.

Oh, now that we're cooperating, suddenly you're all friendly with us.

Now, I want you to go carry out your end of the bargain, but... You don't appear to be properly equipped. Go to Shibahama Core. There are people there who should be able to help you if you show them that COMP.

Thank you. Tomato, let's go.

Ah~ That's better. Don't worry, I'll write a mini-update about Shibahama Core to talk about the shops and demon fusion. Next up, the cold storage warehouse! :atlus:

Mini-Update: Shibahama Core

Remember Shibahama Core? Where every single vendor told me to gently caress off? Okay, it wasn't that bad but you get it...

"Video Muscle"

Now, hold on a second...

Oh, wait. Hey, that's a COMP, isn't it? Why didn't you tell me you had one?

It seems that having a COMP changes everything in Amami City.

On the lower screen you can see your equipped weapon/gun. The Leather Comb isn't a huge damage boost or anything but the extra hit rate is nice.

I buy both a weapon and a gun for the MC. So, about guns... They require ammo to shoot, ammo is limited but unless you're using guns every single fight for hours, you should be fine.

Nemissa will have terrible STR the entire game, so the best way to let her deal damage without using TP is a gun. I end up buying two 9mm Pistols and Normal Bullets. Got anything to say, Matthew Mercer?

Why don't you stop and chat for a bit instead of just buying items and leaving.

I'll think about it. We now have weapons, but what about armor?

"Picture Gallery Radder"

Heh.

I did not recognize your COMP sir. My sincere apologies

Oho~ Now THAT is fancy.

Armor is a bit more interesting than weapons. A helmet to null Mind being available right away? Sweet, I guess. Oh, right... I haven't explained the different status effects and all that.

Ailments are divided between different categories:

Mind
Sleep: Units that are sleep will be unable to move until they wake up by taking damage or using an item. Attacking a sleeping unit doesn't grant extra damage.
Confusion: If a human is inflicted by confusion, they have a chance to randomly attack or do nothing at all. When a demon is inflicted, the following effects are added: Running away if it's an enemy demon or return to the COMP if it's an ally.

Curse
Charm: Charmed units will attack themselves or their allies each turn.
Poison: When poisoned, your attack power will be reduced. You will also take damage every few steps when walking inside a dungeon.

Nerve
Bomb: When inflicted with Bomb, units hit by a Fire attack will explode, dealing damage to the unit and adjacent allies.
Paralysis: Paralyzed units won't be able to act until the ailment wears off, or an item is used.

Instant Death
Petrification: Turns a party member into Stone, not allowing them to act. Unlike Paralysis, you need an item to cure this ailment. Can be blocked with equipment to Null Death.
Expel/Death: Causes a unit to instantly die. Hama, Hanma and Hamaon can be blocked with armor to Null Expel. Mudo, Mudola, Mudoon can be blocked with armor to Null Death.

Elemental Status Effects
Freeze/Shock: Freezed/Shocked units will be unable to act during their current turn.

HAHAHAHAHA... No. We're heading to the COLD storage warehouse, the last thing I need is being weak to Ice. By the way, see the female icon up there? Just like weapons, some armor is restricted to a specific sex. In this case, either Nemissa or the MC.

Remember the MC ultimate armor I mentioned? You need 10 MA to wear the full set, using this armor piece with 8 Magic will allow you to equip it.

This should do. I recommend buying armor from time to time, you don't need to buy new stuff after every dungeon.

Something something, Persona 5.

I myself sometimes feel as though I become a part of a work of art when I come across a particularly splendid piece... One may go so far as to say that the art possesses me. It is a most peculiar sensation indeed.

He gets it.

"Automata"

Automata is probably one of my favourite songs in the game.

Oh, my, look at that... Uncle Victor made this, didn't he?

Not for free, of course.

I see. Well, I'm going to let you buy the special stuff, then.

Okay, about these items... MA doesn't affect the damage from consumable items. I guess you could give them a try if you literally have NOTHING to do with the MC. Just don't expect anything too crazy.

As for the Attract Water, it raises the encounter rate. Yeah, that's it. Later on, this shop will sell some very useful items.

"Drug Gear"

Okay you know the routine already, MC shows his COMP and bla bla bla.

...Oh! I didn't expect you to have one of Dr. Victor's COMPs. I guess looks can be deceiving... Well then, I'll show you the best Rx and Effects has to offer. I'm sure they'll come in handy.

Rx and Effects sells, you guessed it, consumable items

I don't remember the enemies in the next dungeon, but having items to cure poison and revive party members is a must. Probably...

Only humans such as the MC and Nemissa (well she isn't human, but you get the point) can use items. Since Nemissa will be doing most of the damage, nothing better than a fast MC to throw items around when needed.

Why Rx and Effects?

Do you like the name of this shop? My mom wanted me to stick to tradition and name it "Ye Olde Medicine Shoppe" But I figured that a shop in this futuristic city needs to have a name that stands out. We even got a mascot!

"Hakkaku Liquor Store"

I didn't notice your COMP there. I guess you Summoners are just getting younger and younger. Heh. You know, I think I'm taking a liking to you. I'll show you some of the store's finest.

You read that right, you can get your demons drunk. Doing so will change their personalities temporarily. Remember Oliver killing himself and me not being able to raise loyalty because "Go" also meant "Kill yourself"? If I had alcohol, I could've changed his personality to something like Wild and command him to attack instead of using Last Resort.

The third one is a gift. Giving gifts to demons will raise their loyalty. The efficiency of each gift depends on the personality type.

"Thai Eatery Sawamura"

...Sir, you have a COMP! Then you must try out my special recipes.

The voice of this guy is hilarious in Japanese.

This works just like Healing Spots, but you pay Yen instead of MAG.

You can also get a brief description of what stats do. Asking about luck will end up in "I don't know, but you should put some levels into it"

If you're not feeling well, come on back. Kop khun kraup!

"Somatic Energy Institute"

Hm... That's one of Victor's COMPs, isn't it? Ah, then you must be Mister Pawah.

The one and only

Very well. The Association hereby recognizes Pawah as a special member.

The Organic Energy Association has one simple function, selling and buying Magnetite.

See the "M=10=¥99"? That's the current rate. What is rate? I'll let the NPC do the talking this time.

The "Rate" is the exchange rate of MAG to Yen. For example, if the rate is shown as 10= ¥107, then that means you can buy 10 MAG for 107 yen. Or, in reverse, if you sell 10 MAG, the Association will pay you 107 Yen.
So you could buy MAG when it's cheap, and sell it once the prices start to rise. You could make some money that way, but it won't really be a considerable amount.
The MAG and yen trade rate is not set in stone. If demand outgrows supply, the cost of MAG will increase. Conversely, if there is little demand and lots of supply, the prices will go down.

What is Magnetite, anyway?

MAG, formally known as "Magnetite", is a type of energy created by life. Even humans have MAG within them, though it's a negligible amount. In some rare cases, there are people with an extraordinarily large amount of MAG within their bodies. These people often come under attack by demons. But, I'm sure to those concerned that it's simply a nuisance.

Wait... So that's why are we getting attacked so often? Because of Nemissa? Her hair is even the same color as the Magnetite tanks behind him!

Thanks for the explanation.

I suggest you be careful. Demons are unable to survive without Magnetite...

I should be able to upgrade Nemechi again...

Hey, I got the female path.

YOOOOOOOOO, DORMARTH!

And Decarabia's BFF.

I'll buy a Goblin, just in case.

"Hotel Goumaden"

I've been waiting for this...

Demon fusion is the core of Megami Tensei, plain and simple. Once one of your allies stops being useful, fuse it with another demon to create a (hopefully) better one.

Let's start with Binary Fusion. How about Old man Gen (Knocker) and the Goblin I just got.

Oh, okay. How about... Oliver Zero and Pixie?

The new demon will inherit skills if fused inside the Goumaden and will prevent fusion errors/losses, that's why I prefer using this place instead of the COMP. But, Why Recarmudra...? Bah, whatever. Bye bye Pixie and Oliver.

And those are the basics of Demon Fusion. There is more advanced stuff, but I'll leave that for later. Also, notice how the Loyalty meter is almost full... Some of the loyalty gets transferred to the new demon, so try to raise it as much as you can.

"Hideout"

I'm just here to save my game.

Nice timing, Tomatoe. We've just found something new on this Summoner Net of theirs.

"The day is coming" Lmao.

I just tasked Six and Yu-Ichi with digging up info around town.

We'll give you a call if we find anything, Leader. Hey, Yu-Ichi, quit wasting time!

Heeeey, hold up! I'm coming!

...Oh, see ya, Tomatoe.

So, how'd it go on your end?

Yes, about the Goumaden...

Fade to black.

Victor, huh...

He didn't seem to be associated with the Phantom Society, but...

He was hot.

He was a creep.

That too, I guess.

From what it sounds like, he doesn't deal with people who don't have COMPs. We have no way to communicate with him ourselves, then... Sorry, but we'll have to let you deal with him.

Right, before I go I should check on my apps.

Enemy Sonar: Displays the danger level of enemies in the current floor.
Honey Bee: Displays all floors of the dungeon.
Moon Adult: Raises success chance when talking to demons during a Full Moon.
Da Vinci: Adds a "Fusion Search" option when using the COMP to fuse demons.

Eh, I don't have anything better so may as well.

"2D Field"

We have a new location, Amami Bay.

Oh? THE Amami Airport? I wonder what happened there, even the Phantom Society seemed distressed when talking about it.

My life doesn't have any real highlights other than that. Sad, I know...

Construction's being help up because of that explosion a while back.

E x p l o s i o n?

It's amazing that people have figured out how to build something that massive on water.

"Bay Warehouse Streets"

Update 5: Cold Storage Warehouse

Before we enter the warehouse, I buy some sake for my Goblin.

quote:

Jirae - Goblin

Lv. 10
D-Souls Cost: 100
Alignment: NEUTRAL - NEUTRAL
Personality: Sly
Resists: Fire, Ice, Electricity
Weakness: Expel

Magic
Tarukaja: Increases Physical Attack. Stacks up to 4 times. (50%/150%/250%/350%)
Sukukaja: Increases Accuracy. Stacks up to 4 times.
Makakaja: Increases Magical Attack. Stacks up to 4 times.(50%/150%/250%/350%)
Dekunda: Removes debuffs from the entire party.

Goblin is a Sly demon for some reason and his entire kit revolves around buffs. I need to build that loyalty asap.

"Bay Warehouse Streets"

There are some hidden NPCs around.

Why's that?

It's got an electronic key lock on it, so you have to know the passcode to go inside. There should be some people patrolling the other warehouses, so if you need to get in, one of 'em oughtta know the code.

...But, there's always this odd guy that hangs around that middle warehouse. He's always picking fights with random people, so steer clear of him.

No, what?

There's this crazy guy that hangs around the warehouse who's always yelling about how he's going to kick everyone's asses. The last time I saw him, he was mumbling to himself about something. I think that was about 2 or 3 days ago. He was complaining about the electricity being cut off, and he was talking about making Ga-something lower the temperature.

Foreshadowing is a narrative device.

...You have any clue what he's talking about?

Nope.

But, girl, I suggest you do something about those lame rear end clothes. They don't look good on you at all.

Friendly reminder the MC isn't saying anything!

These clothes actually look really cute on me...

Hey, you guys know about the Amami Float? They built it as a storage site for the airport construction. But some of us were thinking about sneaking on board and throwing some awesome raves on it! Wouldn't that be awesome? The problem is, we have no idea how to get over there. I'm guessing it's gotta be connected to the airport somehow...

Here goes nothing.

This one is fairly simple, a straight path and some rooms to the sides.

"Battle Conversation"

Oh, this demon again...

How about a present?.

GRRRRR...! ME TAKE SOMETHING FROM YOU. ME TAKE ANYTHING.

This demon is Lv.6. The price in MAG should be 60 but I'll give throw 100 just in case.

THANK YOU, SUMMONER. BUT ME NOT SATISFIED. ME WANT MORE...

:suicide:

There you are...

You greedy gently caress.

:peanut:

Reloading your gun during battle takes one turn, but you can also do it from the Equipment menu.

Evasion is more important than defense, probably.

"Normal Battle"

One of these enemies nulls fire and the other one is resilient to magical attacks. Good thing both the MC and Nemissa have guns.:getin:

Oh, okay. Just ignore me, I guess.

:blastu:

:blastu:

And we're here.

Are you mental, kid? Why the hell would I ever give a couple of kids the passcode to a restricted refrigerated warehouse?

I mean, if you say it like that...

Not only are you not supposed to be in there, but anyone without insulated clothes would just freeze their frickin' nards off.

Grrr... Stupid insulated--Fine, then give us the insulated clothes. If you don't hand 'em over, you're going to be sorry. Nemissa is a demon after all!

A demon, huh? Listen... Are you kids on drugs? Where are your parents? I don't have time to be babysitting you two, so look, either you get out of here, or I'm going to call the cops.

Hell no.

Wh-What's with all the screaming? All that noise is so distracting! I can't concentrate!

G-G-G-Gun!

Actually, it's called a GUMP--

...Er, yes! We mean business! You'd better do what we say!

Please don't kill me! I'll give you some insulated clothes!

... Crap. We didn't even get the passcode out of him. I guess we should go check the other warehouse for someone with the password.

The insulated clothes reduce Ice damage by a lot, even in Hard mode. I won't equip it just yet.

Let's try checking the other warehouses first.

From BDSM zombies, to a zombified Drag Queen. The Rumor and Undead race have some of the most underrated and creative demons in the series. As for the Drag Queen, they have this weird skill called Simple Twist where they heal some HP in exchange of...falling sleep?

Uh, okay. Do you thing Nemissa.

Let's see, the shutters should be locked. The passcode is "481106". Make sure you lock 'em when you're done. Wait, you only have one set of insulated clothes? Well, here's another one then. Don't want you getting frostbite.

Well, it's hard to move in, and it catches fire easily, but it is resistant to the cold and it's freezing in there. But, hey, no skin off my back. Personally, I'd wear the crap outta those clothes in there. It's your call, though. Just try it on for a bit, and you'll see what I mean.

And we get another one of these.

"Bay Warehouse"

I mean, it is so cold in here. We'd probably be human ice cubes if we just rushed in here without getting them...

Do we really have to wear these?

I mean...

You're fine because you're a demon, but the body you're in right now is HUMAN! If you're going to be possessing me, you need to take better care of me!

You know what? I don't need these... I'm playing on Hard after all, I want to feel the danger!

This demon has Hama, a Light/Expel skill with a chance to instantly kill the target. Luckily, in most SMT games, humans tend to be immune to Light/Expel by default.

Oh there's the smiley face, let's try and recruit it.

All right.

What...?

Why the hell is a weakling like you wandering around here? You get lost or something?

So I could find you.

What the hell are you even talking about?

Talking to demons can be really frustrating sometimes. :cripes:

Hey, did you know there's like, a laboratory or something on the first floor?

It sure does.

Yeah, totally shady, right. And the guy who works there is even worse! You catch the size of his nose? No way anyone's got a nose like that who's not some evil mastermind. I'd be careful if I were you. Seeya.

What kind of a lab would be in the middle of a warehouse? Sounds pretty fishy...

Wait, Tomato...! Maybe that "Doll" thing that Victor wanted us to get... Maybe it's inside of this shady "Lab" of "Thrills". I'm betting that's it. I'm getting the same weird vibe I got from the Goumaden! Let's go, Tomato!

Hnnnng...!

.....? What's wrong Tomato...? The door's frozen shut? Is that even possible!? Step aside, let me try!

Nemissa, you have 3 Strength.

.... Okay, it's possible. You won't be able to open this door no matter how hard you try. That ice isn't normal. I'm pretty sure this ice is created by a demon. Actually, not just the ice... I don't think this is a refrigerated warehouse. I think a demon's cooling this entire place.

I think the source of the cold is below us somewhere. We need to defeat the demon that's chilling this room to get through this door.

I have enough Magnetite now, time to summon demons.

Wild demons love using physical attacks, both skills and basic attacks.

The effect of the sake doesn't last long, but hopefully it's enough to get a good chunk of loyalty.

This is what a demon looks like when they're drunk.

Even low level demons can deal severe damage to Nemissa, she's just that fragile.

drat, seriously? A human... Great. Just what I needed. So, whaddaya got to say for yourself?

You know what? gently caress you too!

Same to you, jerk.

Oh, a tough guy, eh? Heh, maybe we could get along after all. We get along pretty good, don't you think? Yeah, I think so. I bet we even like the same kindsa food.

Easy pick

FINALLY!

I can't stand being in that room without getting bundled up. That cold just chills me right to the bone.

Lv. 5 Loyalty, baby!

I may have underestimated the enemy, I need to go back and resupply.

I fuse my Knocker and the recently recruited Gally Trot to create an Azumi. This demon is important because it has Rakukaja, a defensive buff.

Then I fuse Pixie with Azumi to create Seere. He has fire damage, a defensive debuff and a skill to cure poison. Thanks to the skill inheritance, exclusive to demons fused inside the Goumaden, he also gets Dia from Pixie and Rakukaja from Azumi, creating a fantastic attack support! Is demon fusion cool or what? :smug:

And finally, we sell some MAG to get money. Now, back to the warehouse.

Oh, hi Mokoi.

Like lame jokes.

:cripes:

You're going to give me something, right? I'm looking forward to this.

Don't you loving dare...

:bang:

Hmm :thunk:
Short/messy hair, chubby, glasses.

Mokoi, my man. :hfive:

I didn't know until now, but you're a pretty good guy for a Summoner.

Just got my COMP.

Oh, so the only thing you need to be a Summoner is one of those COMP thingies? You're going to give me something, right? I'm looking forward to this.

:smithicide:

I finally reach B2F. Right next to the elevator we have a healing spot and a terminal.

Thank you. But just this isn't enough to satisfy me. It's too bad, but we can't do anything about it. Later.

I want to scream.

There was a blackout a couple of days ago. Come to think of it, that's when I started hearing some weird noises from down below. There was this wheezing sound that I hear now. I've never heard anything like it before. Someone should probably check that out.

He has a very peculiar accent, a very large nose, and possesses a strange doll... He's quite disturbing. I would prefer it if he didn't stay long.

Ejem...

There was something that I have always wanted to ask a human about.

Nemechi.

I have heard of that, but I've never seen one. I would definitely like to try using it some day. On a different note, will you be giving me anything?

Please don't ask for a gun...

I think I picked one before... Uh, yes?

The boss is behind this door, I need to do some fusion and heal my party first.

I finally manage to recruit a Mokoi. How, you ask? He literally asked for 13 MAG. Yeah...

I finally found this stupid tree. Here's something I wanted to show before the boss.

Using Ice skills has a chance to freeze the target. Being frozen will take away your turn, assuming the unit hasn't acted yet. I think that's it. Nemissa, kill.

What's with demons in this dungeon? :negative:

Pretty good.

Thank you. I do try to look my best whenever I go out. Oh, I know. I will accompany you in your travels. Would that be satisfactory?

AAAAAAAAAAA! :livintrope:

Seere + Penanggal creates Angel. She lost Rakunda but gained a kit focused more on support, fitting for a Kind demon like her.

I also resummon Seere from the compendium.

This is the team I'll be using against the boss. "Wait a second, Tomato... How are you using an Extra Law demon alongside a Chaos demon?" Well, I used the Alignment hack. I forgot that Extra Law/Extra Chaos demons will prevent units from the opposite alignment to be summoned... I'll avoid doing this again,.

These are our stats.

"Suspicious Occasion"

Wait! Hey Tomato, don't you think this one is going to use ice attacks?

This dialogue actually caught me by surprise. Stop being such a killjoy, Hitomi...

Nah, I'd win.

...Hey, you! Quit being such a pest and knock off this freezing air already!

*wheeze* Who are you...? I belong in the cold. The cold... It is where Gargan Zero belongs.

Master Thrill ordered me to protect this place... Are you going to stand against me? There will be... no mercy.

What are you even talking about? If words won't get through to you, I bet magic will.

"Event Battle 2" :siren: "Vs. Gargantua Zero" :siren:

Zoma - Gargantua Zero

HP: 406
Lv. 16
Nulls: Expel, Death, Mind, Nerve, Curse
Drains: Ice
Weakness: Fire

Skills:
Mabufu: Deals Ice damage to a row of enemies.
Aeon Rain: Deals Ice damage to all enemies.
Tackle: Deals Strike damage to a single target. Can only target the front row if the user is on the back.

Gargantua Zero can be completely trivialized by wearing the insulated clothes and/or recruiting the multiple demons here who also nullify ice damage. Aeon Rain is by far the most devastating move, but she doesn't use it all that much. Doing this fight with a Nemissa with Ice skills is p a i n f u l.

"Boss Event End"

...Oh. Looks like it's getting warmer in here already Let's hurry and get out of here.

W-Wait. We still need to find that thing Victor wanted us to look for.

More endurance to protect my goth glass cannon.

I should put some points into Intelligence. Her massive damage won't matter if she can't land a hit.

Oh, Media, nice. Don't quote me on this, but I think your Magic stat also affect healing. Nemissa tends to heal a lot of HP even when using weaker skills.

You're welcome.

Through the dungeon, you'll find some yellow doors. These doors are frozen, and can be accessed after you beat the boss. The treasure behind them is more than worth it.

Incenses are fairly rare. The MC has no use for IN so I'll give it to Nemissa.

Sure, why not?

And finally, we unlock a shortcut. If you ever want to return here, for some reason...

"Suspicious Occasion"

If you're wondering if this guy sounds like an evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz... Yes, he does. Dr. Thrill, just like the Energy Association guy, is a returning character from Devil Summoner. In that game you could fight his artificial demons, known as Gargantuas, as optional bosses.

You... You have some nerve to enter the lab of the glorious Dr. Thrill without permission! Nerve, I say! NERVE! I instructed Zero to let nobody through, did I not!? Just what what the hell happened to her, huh?

Uh...

Hmmm...? What's that you've got there? I've seen it before. Now, what was it...?

Very well, allow me to inquisit a very single question from you...

That's right.

Bah! Smug, cocksure brat! You're just going to yell that to the entire world, eh? Do you know what kind of humiliations I have suffered at the hands of Summoners!? The very thought...!
I already know that getting involved with you lot is never going to turn out well for me. To be perfectly frank, I would love to beat you into a pulp, but...

I believe a hasty retreat would be the smartest choice for now. You will rue the day we met! I will have revenge!

What an encounter.

Tomato, look...

Oh, we're back outside all of a sudden. Cool.

Like usual.

I've got some new information. Hurry back to HQ.

Well, Victor's creepy doll will have to wait.

"Hideout"

I found this on the Summoner Net, so I called you. Take a look.

Oh God, please don't tell me they made a post whining.

How could I forget him? That's the Summoner who locked me up at Algon NS. I don't know what he's planning to do, but this is the perfect chance to find out more about this Phantom Society. But he IS a Summoner. So what we'll do is... Huh? Are you listening?

Nemisa, please...

He's the one that ran away! That does it! I'll make sure he never talks again!

...I don't know what this Summoner is planning to do, but we can't just ignore this chance. I know it's dangerous, Tomatoe, but I want you to check it out.

If Spooky says Jump, I ask how high

I'll go investigate.

Oh, and I installed an observer program to check Summoner Net for new info whenever it comes up. I'll let you know when they post something new. Make sure to check when it alerts you.

About that Sea Ark in the Summoner Net posting... It looks like that's the hotel under construction in Amami Bay.

It looks like it's been completed, but they say it's still under construction. They aren't taking reservations yet.

Maybe you can get in with one of those license cards they were talking about.

We're going to look around a little more before we head back. Later, we'll--Yu-Ichi, don't touch th--

A license, huh... Maybe that one I gave you earlier is the one you'll need to get in. I want you to check that out, too, but the Astro Museum comes first.

Nemissa is out for blood.

"Hotel Goumaden"

And so am I, time to fuse demons. :getin:

With this, I can now create a new demon, a "Zoma". Loyal to its master, this will become a powerful ally for you.

Fusing a demon with the Dolly Kadmon will create a replica with the exact same skillset. Zoma demons will always have 5 Loyalty and the summon cost/CP is 0. The catch? Their stats depend on the demon that's being used, at this point of the game most demons have single digit stats. As a result...

...this will end up creating a very weak Zoma statwise. They can be useful if you're low on Magnetite, but I wouldn't rely on them all that much. Zomas are required to create a secret demon race, but that's a story for another time.

Tempting...

Something I forgot the mention when talking about the Goumaden is the "Mystic Change". Once a demon reaches Lv. 5 loyalty, you can turn them into an item. These can be consumable items, unique items or gifts. Wait... Is this what they mean with "give me a sword/armor/gun"? REALLY?!

Whatever, these are the demons I got through fusion.

Girl, have you seen Valkyrie?

ME PLEASED TO MEET YOU, AWOOOOOO.

"Nemechi"

Oh, Setanta and SMT II Chernobog. I have nothing else to fuse, I wonder if I can...

Moh Shuvuu, gimme! :homebrew::homebrew::homebrew:

"2D Field"

Surely, the internet powers that be will revoke his access privileges. The internet wasn't made for sickos like that!

All this stress is making me lose my appetite. Can we go somewhere to just get away from all this for a bit?

I love these two dorks. :allears:

:frogout:

"Sea Ark"

The Sea Ark theme is fantastic, give it a listen!

Well, you're in luck. I'll tell you what the Sea Ark here is. This place looks like a hotel, but it's really a training facility for Summoners like us. Every floor is home to a number of demons. Except the lobby, of course!

We're pretty much given free reign to fight or recruit any demons we want in here, as long as we're strong enough. You've got to be careful, though. The higher up you go, the stronger the demons are.

Oh yeah, one more thing. Sometimes you'll find doors that won't open. That means you're not ready to handle what's inside. If you keep working hard and improving yourself, those doors will eventually open. That's about it. Good luck, kid!

Like the Phantom Society guy said, we now have access to the Sea Ark. Here we can grind and recruit demons without having to go back to each dungeon.

See? These are from the Cold Storage Warehouse.

Kill Muh Shuvuu, kill!:science:

I'm not entirely sure if these are locked behind story progression or level... Well, nothing to do here just yet. Let's go back and prepare for the Astro Museum.

"Hideout"

Oh, Yu-Ichi. You're back?

Yeah. I'm studying how to hack right now.

Hmm, good for you.

I want to become a full-fledged hacker and get myself a cool handle name. Then I can work with all of you as a member of Spookies. Man, I can't wait.

Yu-Ichi...:ohdear:

"Video Muscle"

Oho~ We have new ammo.

Now that I mention it, he said he liked the VR Haunted Mansion in Paradigm X. He loves him some horror. If you can get a realistic experience in Paradigm X...

Why would anyone bother just watching movies anymore?

The Astro Museum is right behind our home. How convenient.

But when I go there, they told me that they had closed early. How could I have such bad luck?

I like being in the city, but I'd like to see a part where you could explore the ocean. You could be friends with cute little fish and dolphins, and play with them, and...

Tomoko, get off the computer. Don't you have a test you should be studying for?

Studystudystudystudystudy.

Moooo~m, I was just about to! But now you're making me not want to do it.

*sigh* Like I said a few updates ago, this is probably just a cultural difference. But man, it's frustrating to read.

Studystudystudystudystudy.

Keep on gaming, Tomoko.

"Astro Museum"

Demons ready, guns loaded, sister gaming. Let's do this... :getin:

In the next update, of course. :atlus:

Hey, thanks for stopping by! Unlike most SMT games, Soul Hackers doesn't revolve around a war between Law and Chaos. Heck, Alignment just what determines the demons you can use in your party. Most people dislike the Loyalty system and Magnetite, but I think that's what makes Devil Summoner unique.

Update 6: Astro Museum

"Astro Museum"

What happened here?

I just received orders to close the museum for today. I'm not sure why, but that's what they told me...

So the Phantom Society has that kind of power, huh.

S-So, don't hurt me...

I'm not good with kids. Hitomi, this one is yours.

R-Really...? It's okay...?

I was in the Planetarium when this man with a guitar came and yelled at me... He was super scary. He said something about having a concert, and getting ready to rock. Then he told me to get the hell out, so I ran over here.

Looks like we found our man. So he's at the Planetarium. Nemissa will handle him, so just go home. Everything will be okay.

Okay. thank you.

Aww... Is this really the same person who called herself a demon in the previous update?

First things first, I give Moh Shuvuu some gifts to raise loyalty. She has this skill called Loyal Electricity that scales with...well, loyalty.

Change?

Pft... Okay.

"Normal Battle"

Hey Zhu Tun She

Bye Zhu Tun She.

While Jewelry is a great gift for Sly demmons, food is a great gift for Wild demons.

"Battle Conversation"

Notice how the background has constellations since we're at the Astro Museum, really cool detail.

Hey, how about I give you a nickname? I bet I can come up with the perfect one for you...

I've been called worse, go ahead.

Oh, whatever's cool with you? Okay, in that case, I'm changing it to Piss-Pants.

Okay PP-nose.

Hey, why don't you give me something? And if you're going to do that...

Catch.

What, you're actually gonna give it to me? Wow, that's pretty great. Oh, I know. I'll go with you.

Hell yeah.

She's a DARK demon, so negotiation won't work. But...

Paper!

Hey! You put your hand out late! That's totally cheating! One more time, one more time.

She will never expect Paper twice in a row. :smug:

Paper!

:peanut:

A Dis-Stone can be used to cure petrification. We won't be seeing any skill like that in a while, but hey, it's free.

Free Magnetite? Sure I'll tak-- Wait, are we stealing this from the Museum?

"Heal Spot"

Healing Spot? Why, thank you.

He was bragging about showing Finnegan a thing or two, but it might not turn out the way he's expecting it...

Finnegan, huh?

Hey, what are you doing here!? Get outta here before you get devoured by a demon.

GIMME! :swoon:

Oh God, this loving ring. In my first playthrough, I equipped this ring and forgot about it for several hours. I was wondering why my MC was dying so much, causing so many game overs. Then I checked my equipment... Don't use this crap, it's not even good on Nemissa.

Oh no.

Anyway.

We've been fighting alone for a while. Time to summon demons!

This just makes me sad.

:science:

:fuckoff:

:allears:

I love my demons so much.:unsmith:

"Terminal"

A save point is always welcome.

"Astro Museum Quiz"

Are you into Astrology? If so, you'll enjoy this quiz. You need to complete it in order to access the planetarium and face the boss.

Let's see... Gemini is the third one. Sagittarius isn't even close to Leo. Aquarius was--

Huh?

HUH?! It has a timer AND it teleports me all the way here? drat it! If you're having troubles, go to the second floor. You can learn a bit more about the constellations there.

I'll be honest, I just guessed here.

Pft, easy.

This is a bit embarrasing to admit :cripes: but... Saint Seiya was my first anime. My younger self was fascinated by the Zodiac/Constellations and I learned a few things about it, heh... A-Anyway, after Leo Aiolia... comes Virgo Shaka.:hmmyes:

After leaving Hyōga and Shun behind, Seiya and Shiryū go to Scorpius. And before Scorpius was... Libra!

Aries is the first sign of the Zodiac and Piscis is the last one. This one seems tricky so how about Piscis?

You may question my methods, but not my results. :peanut:

My stock is full and a bit underleveled... As much as I would love to keep my demons, it's better to fuse them away.

"Hotel Goumaden"

It hurts having to fuse my demons with Rakukaja and Rakunda but such is the life of a Devil Summoner. Also yes, you are. :hmmyes:

Bye Moh Shuvuu, hiiii Chagrin.

You know the deal by now. Fuse demons, build loyalty, repeat.

"Treasure Chest Battle"

Some treasure chests have demons inside. To get the loot, you'll need to fight and defeat them first. Also that battle theme is loving amazing! It's a shame that you only get to hear it during these rare battles.

Is that it? :cawg:

:toot:

:toot:

Well then, let's enter the Planetarium now. We should be able to find Carol J nearb--

"Suspicious Occasion"

WAIT, WHAT?! The game doesn't give you a warning? Uh... Do I even have my demons already summoned? :ohdear:

Hey hey, it's Carol J! You saved me the trouble of having to go find you myself. I'm the laughingstock of the Phantom Society thanks to you! Even Old Man Finnegan's making fun of me!

Don't worry, the Phantom Society is already a laughingstock on its own.

But this is just perfect. Once I've killed you guys, I'll be back on top of the charts! I'll summon up a rockin' demon, and then I'm gonna shred licks 'til your faces melt!

Now, stars! You're just a bunch of crap, but you still have power! Call upon your master! Come on now! O great angel, Kokabel, I summon you!

:munch:

Um... Hey! Yo! Kokabel! Get your rear end here!

...Kokabel? Is that you?

"Moowis"? What the hell! I summoned Kokabel!

So... do we beat your rear end now or?

Wha--! Hey! Whaddya doing!?

Good question, Nemissa.

Huh? You want some? Come on, then! I'll kick your rear end!

Our stats, as usual.

"Event Battle 2" :siren: Vs. Moowis :siren:

Cyber - Moowis

HP: 578
Lv. 20
Nulls: Expel, Death, Mind, Nerve, Curse
Weakness: None

Skills:
Short Jab: Deals Strike damage to a single target. Can only target the front line if the user is on the back.
Bacterio One: Deals Curse damage to a single enemy on the front line, causing splash damage to adjacent units. May inflict Charm
Mazan: Deals Force damage to one row of enemies.
Maragi: Deals Fire damage to one row of enemies.
Strength Song: Attempts to inflict Confusion to a single target.

Just look at that sprite... If you've been stomping on every enemy and boss so far, Moowis is here to test your party composition. Having access to ailments and strong magic damage can be overwhelming. Just like Carol J, fuse a couple of demons and summon them before the fight, unlike me! :frogdunce:

"Boss Event End"

Roma Calor is Maragi but the damage scales based on how low your HP is. It's...pretty poo poo tbh.

Hey jackass, wake up!

You beat me, buddy. I've never met a Summoner as rockin' as you. Guess it's time I retired...

By the way, I think that demon maybe possessed your girl.

How do I bring her back?

I've never seen a demon like that before... Sorry, man.

AWOOOOOOOOOOOO. LEAVE IT TO ME, SUMMONER!!

Look, you can have this. I'm not gonna need it anymore.

I guess I'll have to start playing for change on the street...

*sigh* Great, what now?

Huh?!

Hitomi! You're okay!

Geez! Don't do that!

Hitomi!

Hello? Tomato? It's me, Nemissa.

This is that Paradigm X place, huh? Hahaha! It's interesting.

Hitomi keeps bugging me, so I'll make this quick. Meet up with me at the HQ. See ya!

Paradigm X? Nemissa, wait!

ME CONFUSED, SUMMONER.

Same Cunhur, same.

"Hideout"

:stonk:

Why do you think!?:stonk:

Bwhahaha! Surprised, aren't you? I was pretty surprised myself. You see, Nemissa can enter Paradigm X now! I think it was one of that Moowis demon's powers. I was suddenly able to do that after he tried to possess me.

I mean, that sounds cool and all but... What about Hitomi?

Hitomi, are you okay?

Y-Yes... I'm surprised, too, but I'm fine...

What about Moowis?

Don't worry. That Moowis guys disappeared once we got to Paradigm X.

Oh, you were crying the entire time, huh. But too bad! I say we're going, so we're going!

If you don't want to wait until you can find a Terminal, Back-Upper is your best friend. It takes 2 spaces of memory but the value it provides is huge. I won't be using it though, cool kids don't rely on save states.:smug:

God, she's so pretty...

"Paradigm X"

The idea of being turned into data sounds really cool...

That was fun! Let's do it again!

I know right!? Hitomi's such a wimp. It's funny.

You mean the Boutique?

I've always hated these clothes! They're awful and tacky!

Are they?

"Boutique"

Nemissa, please...

This is a good opportunity to change.

(What!? What're you saying!? Who knows what'll happen if I let you decide what I wear...)

(Hee hee! Argue all you want, but you're not going to stop me. Time to get my fash on!)

(Nemissa! Don't you dare! Hey!)

So... How's business these days?

Well, I can't complain.

Check on my sick plushie.

YES Can I even answer that?

The total comes out to...

All right. Don't bother wrapping them up, I'll wear them out. Bye!

Huh? They're not real clothes, you know. This is cyberspace...?

. . .

Er... Miss?

Exploring Paradigm X with your demons will still eat up Magnetite, so remember to return them to the COMP.

As the owner of 2 bnuys, this is nothing out of the ordinary.

You seem more at peace here than in the physical world.

...Do you know Nemissa?

Unfortunately, I do not have time to explain. Pawah, I have a favour to ask of you. I want you to undergo another Vision Quest. I shall be waiting for you at the theater. Come when you are ready.

Oh, we're trapped in here until we do the Vision Quest.

Don't be fooled by his fluffiness.

"Redman"

This being your second time, I assume you are aware of what a Vision Quest entails. There are no words to describe the soul. You can only use your own soul to absorb the full experience.

The next soul you will contact is that of a man named Judah Singh. He was a Dark Summoner. In a way, he was in the exact opposite position as yourself.

Dark Summoners are those who use their abilities for selfish needs, instead of using the power of demons for the greater good. Urabe was also a Dark Summoner.

But, the root of the calamity can be seen in his final moments. Now, Pawah, open the eyes within your heart. Communication between souls is a question of the spirit. You must find the answer with all your body and soul.

:siren: "Judah's Intro" :siren:

"Urabe's Death"

Wait... THE Amami Airport?! So we will finally see what happened there...

In case you're wondering... Yes, Judah's sax is a COMP.

The explosion at Amami Airport, the source of the calamity, Judah Singh... There's so much to uncover! In the next update, of course.:atlus:

Update 7: Vision Quest 2: He who haunts.

"Amami Airport (Vision Quest)"

Before starting the second Vision Quest, let's check on Judah's demons. The song that plays during this dungeon is one of my favourites in the game.

Magic
Zio: Deals Electric damage to a single target. Has a chance to inflict Shock.
Zan: Deals Force damage to a single target.
Mazio: Deals Electric damage with a splash effect. Has a chance to inflict Shock.

Extra
Meat Bullet: Deals poo poo damage when you use it. Chance of causing a game over when the enemy has it.
Mist Slash: Deals Slash damage to the front row from left to right.

Hello again, Meat Bullet...:smugjones:

Magic
Dormina: Attempts to inflict Sleep to a single target.
Rakunda: Decreases enemy defense. Stacks up to 4 times (10%-20%-30%-40%).

Extra
Short Jab: Deals Strike damage to a single target.
Defense Kuzushi: Deals Skill damage to a single target. Guarding enemies take higher damage.

Rakunda? 10/10 demon.

Magic
Recarm: Revives an ally with little HP.
Posumudi: Cures Poison.
Petradi: Cures Petrification.
Estoma: Prevents low level random encounters. Lasts for 1 moon cycle.

Not a single offensive skill...? Okay.

Bufu: Deals Ice damage to a single target. Has a chance to inflict freeze.
Media: Recovers HP to the entire party (Low)
Diarama: Recovers HP to a single target (High)

Extra
Loyal Ice: Deals Ice damage to all enemies, damage scales with Loyalty.

Be better, be like Silky.

"Judah Battle"

Just like Urabe, Judah has a unique battle theme. To the no one's surprise, it loving slaps. :sax:

Huh, strange. I don't see another path to reach the 3rd floor.

Sorry, but can you open the locks manually at the Administrative Counters?

Very well.

The first one's on 1F, the second's on 2F, and the last one's on B1F.

I have to unlock them in order? What a pain. So, 1F, 2F, then B1F, right? I can remember that.

Here's the first one.

All right... Onto the second floor... What a pain...

I can cast Diarama to heal Maruts after he uses Meat Bullet, so...

Wow, good job Maruts, 12 damage. :dumbbravo: Why do I even bother with that skill?

...Whoa, whoa. I was just joking. Don't look at me like that, s-some of my best friends are Indian, man.

Oh yeah, there was something I wanted to ask you, o wise one. It's about demon personalities.

As much as I would like to tell this guy to gently caress off, this it's a good chance to talk about the personalities.

Not only magic attacks, any offensive skill that counts as "magic" works. Ailments? Debuffs? Spells? You name it. Sly demons gain next to no loyalty during combat, so the best way to raise it is by giving them expensive gifts such as jewelry or using Sake to change their personality.

Kind demons also love using buffs, even offensive ones such as Tarukaja/Makakaja/Sukukaja.

Not much to say about this one. Both basic attacks and skills work to build loyalty.

Sorry, but I'm busy. Ask another Summoner.

Oh, look who thinks he's too good to help others. You just don't wanna tell me.

Eat poo poo.

The airport also has damage tiles, for some reason...

NYA terminal? More like PYON terminal, get it?

In any other game, a heal and a save spot could be interpreted as the game being kind.

Unfortunately, we're playing an Atlus game...

"Suspicious Occasion"

That face... You're... Rei Reiho, aren't you? You're one of those Kuzunoha, our archenemy...

Anyone who has played the original Devil Summoner, or at least knows about the plot, must be making GBS threads their pants right now. Just like Nemissa, Rei Reiho was the co-protagonist of her game.

I challenge you! My name is Judah Singh! By my honor, I shall claim your life!

Hm... So that means you're... Sorry, but I don't plan on dying today.

"Event Battle 1"

Human - Rei Reiho

HP: ???
Lv. 39
Nulls: Expel, Death, Mind, Nerve, Curse
Weakness: None

Skills
Maragion: Deals Fire damage to all enemies.
Megido: Deals Almighty damage to a single target.
Hamaon: Expel-based skill with a chance to instantly kill all targets.
Diarahan: Fully restores HP.

Jesus... And that was just a basic attack.

She also dodges a LOT of your attacks.

Yeah... Rei Reiho is an scripted battle, you can't defeat her.

Huh?

That's right! The battle might be scripted, but you still need to survive 5 turns against her. If you play on Hard and Judah isn't at full HP, the next Maragion will kill him causing a game over.:ohdear:

"Kuzunoha Family Event"

What are you talking about!? We haven't settled anything yet. Come, Rei! I shall show you the power of the fearless lions of the Singh family!

...Judah, you don't understand what it means to be a Lion of Judah, or even what the Singh name truly means.

What!? What are you trying to say!?

Power used for the wrong purpose isn't fearless, it's merely thoughtless... You're still young; rethink it. Maybe working for a horrible group like Phantom isn't for you after all...

Wait, Rei!

I'm wrong? That can't be...

How foolish... What am I hesitating for...? Letting a Kuzunoha get inside my head. Tch...

...I must complete my mission. All that's left is the basement counter. I should hurry.

Hey... Um, I might have been seeing things, but I thought I saw a woman in a suit roaming around here... I thought I just saw her out of the corner of my eyes, for a split second... I dunno, maybe it's just me.

This is the last one...

Why do I have doubts...? I kill men and demons as ordered, and I live my life in the shadows... Even if I left, what could I do? I only know how to fight. I can't just leave the Society...

How absurd. All that would accomplish is that my name would become that of a traitor...

Heh... This is definitely not the time for me to be lost in thought. I'm a fighter, my answers all lie in battle. My objective is the control room. I hope you're ready for me, Demon...

THE URBAN TERROR IS HERE? CRAP!

They have this awful skill called happy trigger and the damage is...:dogstare:

Luckily their AI is pretty stupid and they tend to spam this skill instead.

I'll give the enemies here a proper introduction later.

Oh yeah? Two can play that game!

...Can you help me for a sec? I still don't really understand the behavioral tendencies of my demons. Their personalities are Dumb and Calm.

Dumb demons like it when you use the Go command. Just... be mindful of their skills, unless you want an Oliver situation.

Calm demons are my favourite type; I guess you could call them an advanced version of Dumb demons. Their IA does whatever is best at the moment. Party is low on health? They'll use a healing skill. Everyone is fine? They'll cast offensive skills. However, Judah is wrong when saying "Don't order them" If you can successfully predict their actions based on your party and the enemy, you'll gain their respect. I'll properly show it when I get a Calm demon.

Sorry, but I just don't have the time right now. Try asking another Summoner.

Gotcha. No worries, I know you're on a big assignment right now. I want to become a strong Summoner like you someday soon.

(Is that really the truth...? Heh. I can't believe I'm letting that girl's words make me question my beliefs...)

(I don't have time to contemplate such pointless matters now. It's time to work.)

Oh, Judah...

"Suspicious Occasion"

I am Judah Singh! I bear the name of the lion who guards the holy throne! By my honor, I challenge you.

...Announce yourself, Demon. How are you called?

Manitou? Are you talking about the Manitou net...?

Has it not finished creating a body yet? It looks like it just appeared here. Forgive me, but this is my job. Prepare yourself.

"Event Battle 1" :siren: Vs. Winpe:siren:

Cyber - Winpe

HP 3159
Lv. 18
Nulls: Expel, Death, Nerve, Curse, Gun, Strike
Repels: Mind
Weakness: None

Skills:
Diarama: Recovers HP to a single target (High)
MAG Drainer: Deals almighty damage to the demon with the highest MAG cost. May Petrify.
Dekaja: Removes all enemy buffs.
Demon Birth Cry: Deals Almighty damage to a target in the Front Row. Has splash damage.
Spin Slash: Deals Slash damage to all enemies.

Winpe is quite tough, his moves aren't that impressive but chewing through 3159 HP can take a long time. For reference, Moowis only had 578 HP. If any of Judah's demons get petrified, just use Petradi. If Oshira-sama gets petrified, I'm hosed. If you're having trouble dealing damage you can try and recruit Gu Huo Niao, she has Tarukaja and it's pretty cute.

"Boss Event End"

But still, this is strange... It looked like it just appeared... It was incomplete... Why would it cause this...? And the name it kept calling... Manitou...

"Suspicious Occasion"

What!?

Tch! It's still alive!? Where!? Where is it hiding!?

Wait! It's inside the computer!?

Dammit! It's trying to blow the place!?

The Amami Airport explosion...

Is this it for me...? Is my life going to end here?

What was my life...? What answer did the path I believed in take me to...?

No... I cannot die... I have yet to...

"Redman"

But there are those who become lost. There are those who end their lives while they're still lost.

There is one path. But it becomes a different path depending on who walks it.

Pawah, go to the airport. That warrior is still lost, awaiting your arrival.

Walk the path of that warrior and find your answer.

Judah...

Now awaken, Pawah. Arise and go to the airport.

I don't know why I gave Strength 2 points, my past self must have been moved by Judah's death or something.

"Hideout"

Fade to black.

Vision Quest... So you experience other humans' lives through your own soul?

So that's how you knew the COMP's password.

Still, who is this Kinap character? He knows Nemissa and he can show you the souls of others... I don't understand.

He said that a catastrophe was coming to this city, huh? Is he talking about those Phantom guys and their plans for the city?

But he said to go to the airport next, right? What's the connection between the airport and Phantom?

I'm not sure what they'd have to do with Amami Airport, but that's the only airport I can think of...

Oh. Look, there's something new on Summoner Net.

Winpe and Finnegan, eh? This should be interesting...

So this is the connection to Phantom, huh? Then we're going there, too. If everything goes well, we'll learn about Phantom's plan AND Kinap's plans.

The airport is on the north side of Amami Bay. Let's go.

If you're thinking about going to the airport ASAP to kick Finnegan's rear end, hold on a second... We have another secret conversation between Yu-Ichi and Six if you return to the hideout.

She's gaming.

No, I'm not, Six. Don't say things like that. I'm an only child, so I'm just jealous of people who have siblings. Don't you feel that way, too, Six?

I feel you, Yu-Ichi...

What're you talking about? I'm... I... Huh?

Six?

...Yeah, I'm not jealous. Now come on. If we're heading out, let's hurry up. drat, why do I always have to do the babysitting...? See you later, Tomatoe. You too, Hitomi.

And that's it for this update. Are you in the mood for a secret boss battle against an urban legend? Because that's what we'll be doing in the next update. :atlus:

Yeah I was chuckling too when I recorded the fight after writing that, but I had to endure it for the sake of the LP. In my first attempt, even when not using the insulated clothes, casting Makakaja/Rakunda x2 causes the boss to literally melt against Nemissa.

I know, right? And the battles are usually too easy for such an energetic theme. Feels like an discarded boss theme they just slotted in wherever you could.

Update 8: Amami Bypass

"2D Field"

That is so annoying. I have no idea who did it. Is it some kind of anonymous lurker? That's so not hot.

I wonder WHO did that... :)

Work is totally not happening today. I'm going to call in sick.

I like the VR Park the best right now. It doesn't cost anything to enter, and it's relaxing, so I like it a lot.

If I remember correctly, the Amami Bypass was located at the Amami Bay.

:magemage:

"Hideout"

It's been a while since we last used the PC.

:unsmith:

Paradigm X... I wonder if we could find more information about the Amami Bypass there.

"Paradigm X"

Paradigm X is a major focus of the Amami City project. It's not just a game. Until Paradigm X in complete, Amami City isn't a fully-functioning test case.

Does SA have a Beach Forum?

"Forum 2"

I hear you can go into the paintings at the VR Art Museum. That's definitely something you can only do in cyberspace!

Have you heard? Paradigm X is going to start something called "VR Tours." I'm sure it'll be pretty good, but it can't beat the real thing.

Two years ago I was in California, and last year Cote d'Azur... I was planning to visit Phuket this year, but until then, this'll have to do.

Hm... Nothing interesting here.

In the end, no matter how angry I am about it, I feel like a bird locked up in a cage. At least my heart soars freely!

Whenever I get home, the first thing I do is turn on my PC and check my email. I get really happy when I have a message, but it bums me out when I don't have anything.

When you get to my age, you can count the number of times you talk to young folk on one hand. Being in here and talking to people makes me feel young again. Not as young as this avatar, though!

Nope.

"Forum 1"

I've been using computers for so long, I've forgotten how to properly write in kanji anymore. They call it "word processor syndrome." But, you know, it's not all that bad, so I don't care about fixing it.

Hey, did you know what? There's a rumor that grown-ups are making deals down at the pet shop. That's why I haven't seen many pets around...

There's something I need to know right now. I apologize for asking so rudely, but...

I do.

I see...

I do. Also they're hot.

You do? I have one last thing to ask you, then. This may sound crazy, but... Have you heard of humans who control demons, and use them to fight other demons in the dark places of the world?

You mean Summoners?

Huh! So you do know... I'd like to talk with you a little more, but I'd rather not do it here... Meet me in front of the bank.

Now that's the info I was looking for...

Just get on with it.

You knew about Summoners. So I want to ask you... Is there a way for someone to... contact a Summoner?

Leave it to me.

You can contact a Summoner!? I can't believe it!

Okay game, I get it! I'm already here, you don't need to give me so many "choices" lmao.

You will? You see... The Amami Bypass isn't actually under construction. It's closed because of a ghost. Well... It's more like a demon. I want that demon defeated.

I'm already here. What am I going to say, no?

Thank you. I really appreciate it. Get to the Bypass through the Yurashima toll both. The demon appears at the construction site in Amami Bay. Civilians aren't allowed into the area, so have the Summoner tell the guard that they want to speak to "Nose." If the summoner defeats that monster, let's meet here again. I'd like to thank you.

Yurashima, Nose, Amami Bypass. Got it. I wonder if my demons are up to the task...

Excuse me, but... what am I supposed to say in situations like this?

What do you mean, "what"? You say whatever you want, of course.

I see... I am not experienced in conversating with people other than Master Victor...

Really? You're an odd one...

Mary?

Yurashima is unlocked much later in the main story. But hey, that's why this is a secret quest.

We came here for a mystery and we already have another one, sheesh.

All the chips that power the computers that are the backbone of Amami City are made right here.

Algon Microelectronics...

Of course Phantom is here too... Is this the same racist guy from before?

We want to speak to "Nose"

I must say, there's a terrifying rumor about this road going around. They say that the road has many holes which will pull you in with a mysterious force. Anyone pulled in has never been seen again. You can avoid the holes, though...

Okay Cunhur, you're up.

ME OBEY, SUMMONER.

"Amami Bypass"

AWOOOOOOOO

First of all, the whole Cunhur bit is obviously made up. I have no idea why you start speeding through the Amami Bypass with Nemissa.

"Treasure Chest Battle"

Stepping in the holes will trigger a random encounter. These enemies are not that powerful, but can easily wear you down before you reach the end..

Not like Nemissa cares.

To those who've played SMT Nocturne. Remember that weird tunnel where you punch orbs to get Macca? I had the same mix between confusion and amusement with these two minigames.

Two more to go, I'll just skip ahead a bit.

I should summon my demons just in case, I don't want another Carol J situation.

Oh, never mind. The game gives you a few free steps before the boss.

"Suspicious Occasion"

Ah... Are you Nose?

"Event Battle" :siren:Vs. Speed Demon:siren:

Undead - Headless Rider (Side Quest version)

HP: 396
Lv. 17
Nulls: Ice, Elec, Death, Mind, Nerve, Curse
Resists: Expel
Weakness: Fire

Skills:
Wild Freezer: Deals Ice damage to Wild demons.
Sly Charmer: Deals Curse damage and charms Sly demons.
Beating Kindness: Deals Force damage to Kind demons.

Rumor - Speed Demon

HP: 959
Lv. 18
Nulls: Expel, Death, Mind, Nerve, Curse
Drains: Electricity
Weakness: Fire

Skills:
Happy Trigger: Heavy Gun damage to all enemies.
Arm Chopper: Slash damage to a single enemy.
Dormina: Attempts to inflict Sleep to a single enemy.

This battle is pretty unique and I need to talk about the 3 Headless Riders first.
Turn 1: Headless Rider 1 will use Wild Freezer, dealing heavy damage to Wild demons. Cunhur nulls Ice by default so it's a free turn.
Turn 2: Headless Rider 2 will use Sly Charmer, dealing Curse damage and charming Sly demons. I don't have Sly demons so, another free turn.
Turn 3: Headless Rider 3 will use Beating Kindness, dealing heavy Force damage to all Kind demons. I have 2 Kind demons, Apsaras and Gu Huo Niao. In my testing, this skill will always kill Gu Huo Niao even with 4 Rakukaja stacks so it's pretty dangerous.
Turn 4: All 3 Headless Riders will guard and Speed Demon will cast a skill, usually Happy Trigger. This can be avoided by killing all 3 Headless Riders before turn 4.
Turn 5: Both the Headless Riders and Speed Demons will guard/skip their turn.

Would you please take a look at their resistances? Both the boss and his minions null/drain Electricity and are weak to Fire. Wasn't the Electric build the best? What happened there? :mmmsmug: Smugness aside, I recommend watching the video, I wanted to make it a bit more interesting by killing all 3 riders at the same time and the results were...interesting. Gu Huo Niao gaming.
Oh, I almost forgot. If you're playing on Hard, you may want a demon with Rakukaja and/or Tarunda... The damage Happy Trigger can deal is ridiculous.

Ouch...

"Boss Event End"

Yeah, yeah...just die already.

A human that transformed into a demon... It happens sometimes.

Um... I don't think it's all that common...

Shhhh!

...Was someone watching us just now?

Huh, strange. He must be in front of the bank.

You old fox..

Now, he can finally rest in peace. Thank you.

You're welcome, old man.

By the way, I need your ID to thank you properly...

Showing your ID to a random stranger online? Aye, sure.

I see. I doubt we'll ever meet again... Take care. Farewell!

"Paradigm Bank"

:dogstare:

Phew... Not bad. I'll leave this money here, let's see how much it can grow.

Shops have a few new weapons. I buy a knife and two pistols, both with higher damage and excellent accuracy. If you want to see the exact values, here you go.

Wait... Padded Armor? Climbing Boots? When was the last time I upgraded Nemissa's armor?! No wonder why she's getting creamed by demons lately. :bravo:

Update 9: Amami Airport

"Amami Airport (Reality)"

Just like Algon NS, we have two different songs. I personally prefer the Vision Quest version.

Ummmmm, we were told to, uh... We're supposed to patrol the area.

You don't seem very dependable... Did you just become Summoners? I can't believe we got rookies here. Geez.

Phantom members being clowns as usual.

I heard the Phantom Society's short on men, but... Look, you sure you're up for this? You better not freak out or anything, Finnegan's leading the operation this time. He won't fail.

All right, you continue your patrol. Judah's ghost might be around, but if you can't cope with that, you need to quit.

Judah's what...?

"Battle Conversation"

Kamen Nobuta 9

Kamen Nobuta!? I've never heard of them. And there's 9 of them?

Hey, I'm actually really into video games right now!

I'm actually playing that game right now!

OMG, same!

Let's see... I'm at the part where you talk to this human named Tomato... Hey wait. What's your name again?

Tomato

Th-Then what world am I living in right now!? I-I don't know what's going on anymore! D-Do you know anything about this!? This is actually pretty exciting stuff!

I was laughing my rear end off when I recorded this bit, what a way to start the dungeon, eh?

So that's what the Phantom guy meant with "Judah's ghost."

Moh Shuvuu! :swoon: Too bad I can't recruit her.

She looks like an older demon, so...

Evening news.

Yes, you're right. The news is the best source for finding dirt on society. Oh, that reminds me. You know, I really like listening to music. I bet you never thought about demons listening to music before.

CDs.

That's right. Yup, demons can get CDs, too. Now then. I'm tired of chatting, so let's finish that and get to ¥ talks.

Phew...

:argh:

If you wanna raise the loyalty of Dumb demons, give 'em the "GO" sign. They like being trusted. Plus, if you try to order them around too much, they won't listen and their loyalty will decrease. So while their loyalty is low, just suck it up and let them handle business. It's kind of a pain, but it's just the way they are.

I called Roma Calor "poo poo" a few updates ago. While keeping Nemissa on low HP is pretty dangerous, it can be pretty good if you know how and when to time your healing skills.

I always wanted to ride one of these.

THERE ARE THINGS THAT YOU WILL ONLY UNDERSTAND AFTER A LONG TIME. ANSWER ME, HUMAN.

The best partners.

PARTNERS, HMM... THEN, YOU WISH TO COEXIST WITH US? VERY WELL. I SHALL ACCOMPANY YOU.

Friendship with humans has ended, now demons are my best friends.

No Cunhur violence allowed during this update.

Do we look like Phantom to you?

...You're not one of them? Oh, thank goodness... What are they doing here? They were carrying weapons. On top of that... I saw monsters... A-Anyway, I'm just gonna hide out here until they leave... You two be safe, too.

:supaburn: :supaburn:

Okay, time to be risky. Being in the back row not only reduces the chance of being targeted, but also your speed. Nemissa had her armor recently upgraded so...she should be fine.

And of course, our newly recruited demons.

Hm...

Oh yeah, remove any armor piece that makes you weak to Fire, these things have Maragi and it HURTS.

:toot:

Heh. Even at this age, I still love a good ride.

:smith:

Have you heard of Reiko Kashima? She's a Japanese urban legend. Reiko will ask people in bathrooms at night where her legs are. Answering incorrectly will cause her to rip off your legs. The design is another banger, classic Rumor race W. She's strong against Magic and loves to spam an agility debuff...

Oh, we're back here. Okay.

I don't know what my past self was thinking to use Roma Calor at full HP.

:getin:

Phew! That's 1F and B1F. Back to the Goumaden, let's see what we can fuse.

"Hotel Goumaden"

Rakukaja? Easy pick.

Oho~ That's a fantastic upgrade to my beloved Cunhur.

315 EXP to level up...

I hate having to do this, but I need that gorilla.

Beast demons, my beloved.

"Normal Battle"

Nemissa's Ice Path sucks because a lot of demons null Dark. The Fire build has Hama, which is the opposite of Dark. Hama is really good against undead enemies, take a look at this!

:cawg:

We're being watched by someone. Nemissa doesn't know if it's an enemy or a friend, but... Whoever it is, this person is strong.

Terminal and Healing Spot? Nice...

Because he got wasted, we're here cleaning up his mess now. That little shiftless blowhard.

It's always this loving guy...

You guys new here, huh? You having problems raising your demons' loyalty?

Kind Demons.

As their loyalty goes up, they'll step in and take hits for you. It's not a problem when they listen, but when they ignore your orders to attack, their loyalty'll go down. When that happens, give them flowers or something to get on their good side.

Wild Demons.

Also, giving them food is good. By the way, gifts can actually hurt your relationship if you give the wrong thing. Know your demons. Finnegan said the damage they deal goes up as their loyalty increases.

Sly demons.

But during battle, their loyalty doesn't really waver.

That's all, thanks.

Whatever. I guess you're one of those guys that likes to learn by doing, huh?

Crushed.

Was he here all this time, waiting for someone?

:smith:

The Waste Facility can be found in the East side of B1F.

Even after dying, Judah still manages to help you. What a chad. Too bad we can't take the Sax with us.

Thank you, Judah. May you find peace.

He disappeared...

That ghost... He wanted you to have that Memory Card. But... it seemed like there was something else he wanted, too...

His demons are still here. A true Summoner till the end. :kiddo:

Finnegan! :argh:

They just said an operation is commencing at the Control Room, right? Off to the Control Room, then!

I'll try to recruit as many demons as possible before Finnegan. There are a few treasure chests around here.

In B2F, South-East side, you can find this. Now, what the hell is a Black Panel?

First, go to a Terminal. The Black Panel is a COMP app.

If you enter a fight with the Black Panel, every single party member/empty slot will look like this. Can I get a Heeeeee-ho?

Only one way to go...

Our stats and demons. Let's do this!

"Suspicious Occasion"

There you are... Winpe!

"Finnegan's Entrance"

That demon... Did you kill it?

Who are you? What are you two doing here?

What are YOU doing here!? Is this part of Phantom's plans?

(Shh! Quiet!)

Not only do you know about the Society, but you also seem to know our goals... You're Kuzunoha, right?

Kuzunoha...? Who's that? Um, we're...

Don't bother. It'll all be meaningless once you're dead. Now you'll curse the day you ran into Finnegan.

Why are you acting so tough!? We'll teach you to show some respect!

Summoner vs Summoner, I challenge you!

Hahaha! Do you really think I'd waste my time on kids like you?

Don't worry. They're more than enough to kill you small-timers. Well, you kids have fun... Fun for the rest of your lives! Muahahahaha...

What's with that guy!? That was iiincredibly ruuuude!

That no-good, shades-wearing jerk! Who does he think he is? Hey get out of my way!

"Event Battle 2" :siren:Vs. Finnegan Demons:siren:

Drake - Bai Suzhen

HP: 178

Nulls: Death

Skills:
Scratch: Deals Slash damage to the enemy front line with splash damage to the back line.
Marin Karin: Attempts to inflict Charm to a single enemy.

Snake - Yata no Kami

Lv. 22
HP: 197
Nulls: Strike, Gun
Weakness: None

Skills:
Mazio: Deals Electric damage with a splash effect. Has a chance to inflict Shock.
Sukunda: Decreases accuracy to all enemies. Stacks up to 4 times.
Paral Eyes: Attempts to inflict Paralysis to a single enemy. Can only target the front row if user is on the back.

Wilder - Jueyuan

HP: 197
Lv. 23
Resists: Physical
Weakness: Expel

Skills:
Agilao: Deals medium Fire damage to a single target.
Sukukaja: Increases the accuracy of the entire party. Stacks up to 4 times.
Fold: Deals Skill damage to a single target.

Femme - La Llorona

HP: 223
Lv. 27
Repels: Death
Weakness: Expel

Skills:
Media: Recovers HP to the entire party (Low)
Frolic: Attempts to inflict Charm to the enemy front row.
Scratch: Deals Slash damage to the enemy front line with splash damage to the back line.

I...don't know what to say about this "boss." They're not even powered up versions, just normal enemies. This is easily the least memorable encounter in the game. I guess you should avoid using physical attacks against Jueyan. It's safe to use a sword against Yata no Kami to ignore his Strike/Gun immunity.

"Kuzunoha Family Event"

Huh!?

Who are you? What are you talking about? How long have you been here?

I've been watching for a while. I saw your fight. That was pretty impressive stuff for a bunch of kids.

A while? So that's why it felt like we were being watched on the way here... Are you a member of Phantom?

Sorry, Miss. My name's Sukeroku. I'm the Kuzunoha he was talking about. But let's talk about who you are. You're not Phantom, and you're not Kuzunoha. Yet, the boy's a Summoner... Care to fill me in?

W-We're... Well... How should I say this...?

You don't have to tell me now if you don't want to. Anyhow, if you're taking on Phantom, I bear you no ill will. You see, I'm here because I heard my tomboy of a partner was somewhere in this general area. I'm looking for her...

Hm... I've never met anyone like that... So, is she your lover or something?

Our relationship is a bit too complicated to describe to you kids.

I worked a deal with a certain group. I've got some good news for you and your COMP.

I'll explain it to you in person. Head back to the HQ.

Sorry for any inconvenience I caused. If we're both dealing with Phantom, I'm sure we'll meet again. Take care!

Kuzunoha... Hmmm, that name appears on Summoner Net, too. I didn't think there were others who were fighting the Phantom Society besides us...

Really...?

Well, we can't spend any more time standing around thinking. Let's go back to the HQ. We need to hear what Leader has to say.

Too bad we couldn't kick Finnegan's rear end... Oh well.

"Hideout"

There's a pair known as Reticulian there. To the public, they're known as the club's DJs, but they're actually both incredible skilled hackers. Their code is pure brilliance. They can even hold their own against Algon's resident genius, Kadokura. I've asked them to improve the software you're using. Everything's been taken care of. Just go talk to them.

I'll take you there. It's pretty much around the corner.

Good to go.

"2D Field"

Ngh!

That's your dad, Lunch? Hi, mister...

Don't waste your breath. He's not worth talking to. Let's go.

Junnosuke, are you okay? Are you eating? Answer me, Junnosuke!

...Just shut up! You're no longer my father! You're just like every other jerk in this world!

Ouch...

C'mon. Let's stop wasting time, Tomatoe.

"EL-115"

Oh, so it's you two. We're Reticulian. I'm Alpha, and this is my brother, Beta. Nice to meet you.

Well, hello! We've been waiting for you. I'm Beta. It's a pleasure.

Uh, it's nice to meet you, too...

I didn't know what to expect from one of Spooky's friends, but you're actually kind of cute.

Behave, Beta. You always go all unprofessional when a good-looking guy walks in.

Classic Atlus joke where the punchline is "This character acts like a gay stereotype." *sigh*

I've heard the general story from Spooky. So, you can summon demons, huh?

You could say that, yes...

...Well, first things first. Let's see this COMP thing of yours. Hmm. It certainly is strange. You can really summon demons with this thing? Let me have a closer look.

Right, but it won't activate unless Tomato is the one using it.

Oh, really? So it's got some kind of biometric scanner, then? What a cheeky little thing... What is this keyboard? This isn't any language I've ever seen. Are you sure it's compatible with our machines?

quote:

Tbh, the COMP doesn't make a lot of sense.

Simmer down. I've already take a look at the sample Spooky sent us. Just sit tight and let ol' Beta shine. The script was a bit of a hassle to deal with, but it wasn't a problem for someone of my genius.

I see. Well, I'll just let you deal with it, then. As promised, we'll provide an update to the software that you've been using.

I love this dialogue.

It's usually our policy to not accept personal requests, but it's a referral by Spooky, and the job is interesting.

Honestly, if you were butt-ugly, I'd've refused the instant you walked in the door.

:cripes:

Of course, our services won't be free. We'll only charge you wholesale, though, so be grateful.

Oh, it's over. At EL-115 you can buy COMP apps. Some are terrible, some are insanely useful.

Gulliver Magic: Restores HP with every step.
Time Girl: Displays the current time.
Finders Keepers: Raises item drop rate.
Nurse Call: Restores HP when summoning in battle.
Lady Killer: Raises ability to speak with Female demons.
Albert: Prevents fusion loss when using the COMP.

I have a lot of money so I'll buy everything. I'd suggest you to use Lady Killer and Finders Keepers. Getting multiple enemy drops allows you to resell those weapons/items and use them in demon negotiation. Lady Killer can avoid frustrating moments like the Kikimora giving me a Me Patra Stone. :argh:

...And don't bother talking to that bastard. See ya.

Why would Lunch hate his father so much? Oh, Tomato, your phone is ringing.

She just sits there with her eyes wide open. She doesn't react to anything... There's definitely something going on.

Can you come home, Tomato? I need your help.

Nemissa, please...

Huh!? What do you mean I'm being rude? Don't you lecture me, Hitomi!

I missed it! I really wanted to see what the rabbit looked like. Don't you think rabbits are cute?

They're evil.

The Demon Boss makes the hero forget his magic attacks, so he's too weak to beat the Demon Boss. If only I had the item that lets the hero use magic again, then I could beat the game...

He was like, "You like starts? I'll show you a star" and then he started playing a song. He was pretty good.

Sounds familiar...

"Suspicious Occasion"

I don't know what's the matter with her. She's in your room right now. Please check on her, would you?

Tomoko? Tomoko!

.....

It's no use. She's completely unconscious.

No... But why...?

Talk to Tomoko.

It's no good... She doesn't even notice us...

Look at PC.

What are you looking at? Oh, the PC's running Paradigm X... That's the VR Art Museum. You know, at the movie theater? That means Tomoko must have been playing Paradigm X when this happened. But, wait... I've seen this before...

Oh! Why didn't I remember this sooner!? It was you! You were like this! Tomoko looks exactly like you did when you were on your Vision Quests.

Hang on, are you saying that she's on a Vision Quest?

She must be. She must've met Kinap in Paradigm X, like we did. But, if that's the case... Hey, let's go back to HQ. I have an idea.

You did, too. It was when you were on that Vision Quest in Paradigm X after meeting Kinap. There must be something about Paradigm X. If we use Nemissa's power to dive inside, we might be able to save Tomoko.

You want to know about Kinap, too, don't you? If we go now we might be able to meet him. I don't know what Kinap is trying to do, but I can't forgive him for getting Tomoko involved in this. The PC was left at the VR Art Museum, so there should be something going on there.

I love this side of Hitomi, I wish she was like this for the rest of the game.

Hmmm... I feel like I'm being tricked here, but fine, I'll help you this time.

Huh? Hold on, Tomato, there's new info on Summoner Net.

Hey, stop wasting time. We're going to the VR Art Museum, right?

If Kinap is behind this, then he has a lot to explain. :argh: I'll make sure to check this new "Demon Trading System" as well. The VR Art Museum is quite lengthy and its divided into multiple dungeons. See you in the next update! :atlus:

Update 10: VR Art Museum, Part 1

So...OBS corrupted my footage and I had to record the entire update again. :hotpickle: I'm mentioning this because I won't be starting inside Paradigm X.

She just needs to study or something, am I right?

Just a heads up, the next dungeon has huge groups of enemies and the encounter rate is slightly higher. Try to fuse something with an AoE attack. In my case, I'll be using Spin Slash...:unsmigghh:

"Nemechi"

And we reached the final Nemechi evolution, on the female path at least.

This unlocks Yama, more specifically, his PS1 redesign.

I also buy two new guns, allowing me to shoot enemies in the back line, and ammo with a chance to make enemies fall sleep.

And finally, our new armor. Notice how both the MC and Nemissa have armor to null Force.

"Paradigm X"

Paradigm X is a major focus of the Amami City project. It's not just a game. Until Paradigm X is complete, Amami City isn't a fully-functioning test case.

You hear these kinds of rumors everywhere, I'm not surprised that even Amami City has them, too.

It's a little girl's voice, saying "Shingo, Shingo..." Oh, er... That's my name, Shingo.

Wait... Is this Six?

Oh, there it is again. Someone's calling me... Do you hear it?

Huh, odd. Anyway, let's check the Pet Shop.

Wait, how did you...?

This little one tells me if you do or not. Isn't he a clever little thing? As for you two, I'll show my pet collection.

Let's get started! The Petshop Kingdom is open!

If you like Demon Fusion, then you'll love this place.

At the Pet Shop you can take requests, such as "Bring me a Lv. 5 Loyalty Demon" or "Bring a demon with X Skill."

No good fusion results come from Apsaras so...

Notice how the demon is Lv. 27, rewards ignore your current level.

It turns out my team is full of idiots, including myself.

Hm...not yet.

I could use Silky but come on... That's Judah's Silky! She deserves to be properly fused. The rest of those demons can be found in the next dungeon.

gently caress you and your Meat Bullet.

What the game means by "Jackpot" are the Dream Tickets. If you use Mystic Change with Dumb demons, and they have a high chance to...fail and give you a Life Stone instead. Yeah... Dream Tickets are really nice to have around but it's so frustrating not being able to get the drat item!

Didn't we just get a Seere?

:peanut:

Well, that was fun.

:atlus:

"VR Art Museum"

It looks like she can't hear me. Is she enchanted by the art?

Well, this is new...

:stare:

A juggler is someone who keeps objects in a state of constant motion by tossing and catching them in the air. The painting really captures his cheerful, yet mischievous aura.

Ah, there it is.

Aha! I knew it. We can enter this painting!

"Aqua Dolphin"

Tomato, look! There's someone over there playing with a dolphin... Maybe it's Tomoko! Let's go check!

I feel like we've been walking in circles. Why don't we get out of here and rethink our strategy?

No way to make progress yet... What else can we d-- Who the gently caress is this guy?

Who-hoa, brother! Your friend's got a sharp tongue there! Let's put the past behind us, though. Lemme see if I can guess the reason for that sad face... Wait, wait, don't tell me. I'll guess it.

Hmmmm... My guess is... Something happened to your little sister, right? Is that it? Do I get the prize?

There's something up with this guy. Be careful, Tomato.

Obviously, you wanna save her, right? I mean, an unconscious sister just won't do, after all.

Why do you know about his sister!? What did you do to her, and why do we have to play a stupid game of chess with you!?

Shut up! Nobody's talking to you, so just cram it! I'm talking to the brother. You're going to play, aren't you?

I live inside the chess painting. There's a little room in the back with a chessboard that I like to call the Boardroom. Place three cheese pieces on the board to make a checkmate. If you can do that, you win.

But there's a twist for you beginners! To get the chess pieces... You're just dying to know, aren't you?

Let me guess, you have the last one.

I have one of them. The other two are hidden in the other paintings in this art museum. You need all three to play. Good luck, brother. See you... Hyahahahahaha!

...He disappeared! He said he lived inside the chess painting, but who or what is he? I don't know if we can trust him. But I guess we have no choice but to look for the chess pieces...

You fucker...

"Chess by Window"

I love the atmosphere of this place, it feels like walking inside a dream.

So this is it, huh! The chess painting world where that psycho Juggler lives!

It's kind of surreal... Why the combination of chess pieces and blue sky? This painting has no meaning to Nemissa... It doesn't move me at all.

I think it's pretty. :colbert:

"Normal Battle"

While some enemies are pretty weak...

Others can deal heavy damage. This dungeon is supposed to be explored at the end but... I just couldn't resist.

Recarm allows Nemissa to revive a dead party member, saving a lot of money in the long run.

"Battle Conversation"

Hee-ho!

I'm not supposed to talk to strangers.

Ne-hee-vermind...

I was kidding. I wanted to act like a human kid for once. I like you. I think I'll give you a Gaburipon Chocolate seed.

Looks tasty, ho!

Why don't you get your own, then?

:smith:

I'm sure you've learned a lot today from talking to a demon like me!

You have a point, ho.

...Really? Wow, today's y lucky day!

Aight, the LP is over, I got my own Jack Frost.

Chakra Pots restore you MP fully, nice.

*Sigh*

CRAP!

Phew... Her new armor is being really useful.

See those symbols on the floor? What you have to do is--

drat it! Random encounter-- Oh, I can recruit Pyro Jack too.

Kamen Nobuta 9

I only knew about the first eight. Is Kamen Nobuta 9 a new one!? Wow! I'm sure you've learned a lot today from talking with a demon like me!

Oh it's just as the Jack Frost one, that was easy.

You little...

Nemissa, if you please.

You're on my list.:argh:

Wh-What are you talking about!? What list!? Do I want to be on your list? Oh, oh yeah! I wanted to be your friend!

:smug:

As I was saying, all you have to do is follow the path with the King symbol on the floor.

Simple enough.

Dimute Stones remove the Silence status effect, these will be useful...later.

At this rate, Nemissa and the MC won't be able to survive on their own, let's summon some help.

That's better... Now that we're alone, let's try and recruit this Archangel.

That's right, demons can reject you if you have a party member with an opposite alignment. You don't need to be Ex. Law/Chaos, they can have the exact same reaction with just a Law/Chaos demon. The only exception are Neutral demons.

drat it! What's with the enemy ambushes?

Sleep bullets. :cawg:

:blastu:

And...we're back on the entrance, great.

Nemissa algo got this sweet weapon thanks to the Finders Keepers app.

No thanks, Hugh Mann...

:argh:

Ah, there he is.

If you enter the Terminal inside the Museum Lobby, you'll notice how it changed to "Soul Space" Am I playing YIIK?

What's with this place...? That voice is just repeating itself.

No clue why this room changed but...sure.

Time to claim our rewards...

The Frost Panel changes your party to Jack Frost.

And the Lantern Panel changes your party to Pyro Jack. I won't be using any of these.

The Oni Mark is actually one of my favourite apps, I'll show you why in a minute.

Since I have another demon with Rakukaja, I can use this Bai Suzhen to complete the Dumb demon request I saw earlier.

That's all the preparation I needed, let's explore this place!

Starting with Ghost Waterfall.

"Ghost Waterfall"

Oh! I think I got it! This must be behind the waterfall in the painting.

Good thing I leveled up her INT, just look at how smart she is!

Right? Everyone thinks so, too, right? It has to be!

I'll be showing the map a bit more often here, this dungeon is...quite long.

Enemy formations are a lot more scary too, Gu Huo Niao is a support demon but Wing Flap hurts a lot... If you saw the fight against Speed Demon, you know what I'm talking about. Take care of the 2 Dwarfs in the front line ASAP, they'll cast an ATK debuff non-stop. They also have Hama, and talking about Hama... I made a tiny mistake a few updates ago. I said that Hama can kill your party members and that humans weren't immune to Light by default here. I was wrong...both Nemissa and the MC are immune to light, unless they have armor to make them weak to it.

Future Tomato here, that mistake was already corrected.

Stop debuffing me, you oval office! :argh:

Man, that was rough... At least Finders Keepers makes random encounters worth it, thanks for the Bead.

This door says there's a Treasure Room!

Uh-huh...?

There must be a chess piece ahead! Awesome! I didn't think we'd find it so easily!!

The chess piece has to be behind it! That's easy as pie!

Girl, you're awfully excited.

...Hm? There's something written on this door, too. Let's see here...

Well, I'm not a he, so certainly this doesn't apply to me. I'll just... Ngh... Tomato...! It's not opening!

You still have 3 Strength, Nemissa...

Urrrrrrgh! Why don't these technicalities ever work? So, we're gonna need an Entrance Scroll to open the door...

Tch... It was too good to be true!

The enemies come in big groups here, time to use my secret weapon. :unsmigghh:

My turn!

How do you like that? :cawg:

Oh... Right, Headless Rider is weak to Hama.:frogdunce:

quote:

Ah, finally. This is what I wanted to show. The Oni Mark will change the icons on status effects, this one is supposed to be Freeze. I like that app a lot, so I'll be using it from now on.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Even if the enemies are pushovers, the fights get a lot harder if there are six of them. Also Roma Calor is pretty good! I've been saying that from the start, remember? :mmmsmug:

Try me now.

Nuh-uh!

What's your name, old man?

Huh? My name? I'm Xi. Why do you ask? You have a problem with me or something? Huh?

Remember this place, it's important.

Charm is one of the worst ailments in the game. Charmed party members will hit their own allies and the game is very smart when it comes to picking the targets.

Thank you, Headless Rider!

So, who are you? What are you doing here? And what is it you want with me?

...

Say something already! Geez! Don't make me guess! I don't have patience for this stuff! Seriously, just tell me already!

...

Arrgh! Fine, then! Go home! Leave! You don't have to come back again! Scram!

I guess the MC remembered he's supposed to be a silent protagonist.

Hello there.

Hello, my name is Ruan. Just your everyday stubborn old man. There's nothing here, but make yourself at home.

Do you remember Puts? He was one of Urabe's demons.

You've got a favourite food, right? Something you could eat day after day and never get tired of?

But the thing is, there's a limit to everything, even the best stuff. It don't matter how much you like it-- everyone has their limits. But I had this friend, right? A total idiot. And one day he just ate and ate and ate until his gut frigging busted. Man, I kinda feel sorry for him. Alls I'm saying is, be careful or you might end up dead-- and worse, your corpse will look stupid. Seeya!

Cryptic, but useful advice...

Are you having trouble fighting against multiple enemies? Use the Spirit Kodachi. This sword will turn your basic attacks into a sweep to the enemy front row, from right to left.

Mommy!

...That's so pathetic.

Okay...

Whoa... That was scary. I dreamed that I was falling from the sky. Then I hit the ground, and you showed up. This is a rarity. The last time someone came was... A long time ago.

What's your name?

I'm Shan. Nice to meet you. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn... So sleepy...

Maybe those four old men know something about the Entry Scroll. Let's ask 'em.

At this point your level should be higher than most, if not all, demons in here. If you still have Oshira-Sama from Judah or Nekomata from the Pet Shop minigame, you can use the skill Estoma. Estoma prevents enemy encounters as long as your level is higher than the enemy. If you want to do this puzzle without help, you should use it to save time. If you're low on Magnetite, you should probably do the dungeon normally.

Ahhhhhhhh!? What!? Who are you!?

I just talked with you...

Huh? Oh yeah. The Entry Scroll.

If Xi and I don't have it, you should ask some of the others.

You should go and talk to Shan. However... His memory's been getting a bit fuzzy lately... Ha... I wish I didn't have to age.

I don't have it! Yeah! You need Ruan! Go pester him!

You're done here!

I don't know who has the Entry Scroll. I mean, all of them said they didn't have it. Wait... Then one of them... IS LYING!?

Which sleazebag is trying to jerk Nemissa around!? Tomato! We need to find the decrepit, deceitful dirtbag! We're gonna make him tell us where that scroll is!

This is the location of each old men. From left to right, we have: Ruan, Shan, Xi and Liu.

Ruan
Shan
Xi
Liu

According to Ruan, Shan has the Entry Scroll. However, Shan says that neither Xi nor himself have it. Xi confirms this, he said neither Liu nor himself have the scroll. And finally, Liu accuses Ruan of having the Entry Scroll. The only one who doesn't have anyone backing him up is...

..... Well... I'm surprised you figured it out! You got me!

Got you, old man!

I'm impressed!! It seems your grey matter's still firing. As you've probably guessed, sitting around inside this painting is REALLY boring! Having guests like you makes me happy! I couldn't help having some fun at your expense! After all, it'd keep you around here a bit longer. Please forgive this old man for his little prank... Here's the Entry Scroll you were looking for.

This puzzle can be quite annoying when adding random encounters to the mix.

One down, two more to go.

I complete this request using the Bai Suzhen I resummoned. The reward is information about the UMA race. I should be able to fuse one already, I'll give it a try as soon as I can.

All the info you get as a reward can be seen here.

After feeding more D-Souls to Nemechi, we get 3 new demons. These three are part of the Leg (Female) form. Actually, let's talk about Loki for a second...

Loki is the only demon in the game who starts with a Loyalty of 1. To make matters worse, he's a Sly demon so...prepare some gifts if you plan on using him.

The devs also gave him all 4 Loyalty skills, just to mess with you. Oh Atlus...:allears:

One of the requests asked for a demon with Paralama, so I used this SMT 1 boss called Douman.

Oh, right... They gave me a Poltergeist as a reward. Hm...

So, you will not be able to make them your allies by talking to them. As fusion materials, though, you could say that darkness is only born from darkness. Once you make one DARK demon, pretty much any fusions you create using that demon will also be DARK. If you plan on creating DARK demons, take this into consideration.

if I use this Ex. Law Archangel with a DARK demon...

Update 10: VR Art Museum, Part 2

Here goes...

"Strange Area"

...nothing?

What is this...? A living being? It said something...

Diapers and desserts? It's trying to say something, but I'm not getting it... This thing doesn't make any sense.

Hmhm... But it is kind of cute. Don't you think so, Tomato?

Oh... It ran away. What was it?

...Anyway, it's getting hot in here. I'm sweating just from standing around. The heat, that creature... This really is a strange world.

Actually, I do.

Oh, that's wonderful! I want more than to remember you, I want to experience you. If you will have me along...

Oh wow, thanks Lady Killer app.

I didn't know there was a treasure in this map... I prefer Evasion over Defense, so I'll equip it on Nemissa.

Hmm...

Tell me about this place.

I'm pretty sure you already know, but this is inside a picture. The previous place was the Ghost Waterfall. This is the Strange Area. There are two other pictures, too. Isn't this place great? You can have some tough battles or play elegant games.

Well, let's set the terms of our little arrangement, then.

Hm? What's this? You don't have any? I've had enough. Now I'm angry... Maybe I'll just attack you.

I see you have a death wish.

:blastu:

There's no end to the world in this painting. Er, I think that's probably not exactly right.

This is a finite space, but the north and south ends are connected, as are the east and west ends. If we just keep strolling along without thinking , we'll be walking until we die.

So, it's kind of like a Moebius strip?

Tomato, we should use something as a marker so we can tell when we pass a point we've already been to.

:actually: I already did when I found the treasure chest.

Null Force armor, babyyyyy!

Okay, time to explain how this place works. Try reading this backwards...

So, let's go to the teleporter down here.

In Japanese the puzzle is written in hiragana and you need to read it from right to left. Translated it says "Higashi chigau" which means something like "Not the East." I actually had to replay the entire game up to this point in Japanese, just to take this screenshot. :)

Remember you can use the compass in the second screen to know which one is the East side.

Go west...

"Think for yourself" :smithicide:

Hm, North or South... Let's go North

:regd09:

Assuming you go South, you'll be teleported here instead.

Two out of three! I'm coming for you, Juggler!

I doubt I'll return here, so I recruited Jack Frost, Archangel and Pyro Jack before meeting the Juggler.

And as usual, our stats.

"Suspicious Occasion"

But, a promise is a promise. So, here's the final piece, the Bishop.

Yup, you've got to be honest. I like you, so I'll give you the Bishop. But, you've got to give me a little fee first: your life.

"Event Battle 1" :siren:Vs. Juggler:siren:

Foul - Juggler

HP: 830
Lv. 28
Nulls: Expel, Death, Mind, Nerve, Curse
Weakness: Fire, Ice, Electricity

Skills:
Silent Whisper: Prevents the entire party from casting spells.
Sukukaja: Increases Accuracy. Stacks up to 4 times.
Tarukaja: Increases Physical Attack. Stacks up to 4 times. (50%/150%/250%/350%)

The Juggler is an enabler and his worst skill by far is Silent Whisper. He'll cast it at the start of the fight, then a mix between Tarukaja/Sukukaja. Not being able to cast spells against 2 bulky enemies with both Phys/Mag damage can be quite dangerous.

Remember the Dimute Stones? If your Nemissa is fairly slow, she can use it on Turn 1 to dispel the Silence right after the Juggler had its turn. If not, just accept you'll have to spend at least 2 turns trying to recover.

Jaki - Lham Dearg

HP: 235
Lv. 26
Resists: Physical
Weakness: Magic

Skills:
Zanma: Deals medium Force damage to a single target.
Mazan: Deals Force damage to an entire row of enemies.
Bamboo Slice: Deals medium Slash damage to a single target.

Not much to say about these two, other than using armor to reduce Force damage is heavily encouraged. They can hit quite hard and using phys attacks against them is nearly useless. If your Nemissa is fast enough, she can easily one shot one of them at the start of the fight.

"Boss Event End"

The Board Room is on the room behind the Juggler.

Let's go back to that Aqua Dolphin painting.

Oho~ Maragi deals fire damage to an entire enemy row. If you haven't faced Speed Demon yet, this can be useful. Keep in mind, the Side Quest has a time limit...

Like they'd be deceitful and plot against us. They'd lull us into security... They might even assassinate the prime minister!

Once again, cryptic but useful advice.

"Suspicious Occasion"

...You're right... As long as I'm here, nothing can bother me... No worries... No bad things...

Her soul was sucked into here, so that's why she's like a corpse in the outside world.

It's that dolphin... He's the one who pulled Tomoko's soul into this world. But he's... That's not Kinap. That dolphin is just a demon.

What are you trying to do to Tomoko? Give her back her soul!

No... Tomoko! Tomoko, say something!

...Hitomi? Tomato? What's wrong? Why are you two here?

Tomoko, get a hold of yourself. This isn't a place you should be in. Let's go home, okay?

Go home? Back to that world...? No... No! I'm not going home!

Why not? Your mother is worried about you!

No, she's only worried about my test scores. She doesn't understand the depth of my suffering. Not like Snappy does. Snappy understands me. I feel so relaxed with Snappy.

This isn't good. That demon's totally bewitched her. At this rate, her soul's going to be consumed and she'll never wake up.

"Event Battle 2" :siren:Vs. Snappy:siren:

Wilder - Snappy

HP: 1068
Lv. 32
Resists: Physical
Drains: Magic
Weakness: None

Skills:

Dolphin Kick: ???
Bufula: Deals medium Ice damage to a single target. Has a chance to inflict Freeze.
Mabufu: Deals Ice damage to one row of enemies. Has a chance to inflict Freeze.
Lullaby: Attempts to put the entire party to sleep.

Snappy is a weird boss. First and foremost, he will always ambush you and start the fight with Dolphin Kick. He's also the first boss in the game who can act twice per turn.

And talking about Dolphin Kick... I'm not entirely sure what this skills does. The Wiki says "Reduces 50% HP to front row enemies, 25% HP to back row enemies" but using my own screenshots and several fights in YT this doesn't seem to be the case. Just assume you'll take unavoidable damage at the start of the fight.

No matter how much you buff, trying to kill Snappy with Phys damage is a terrible strategy because he takes single digit damage. So, how about magic? Well... Snappy drains magic. However...

quote:

But the thing is, there's a limit to everything, even the best stuff. It don't matter how much you like it-- everyone has their limits. But I had this friend, right? A total idiot. And one day he just ate and ate and ate until his gut frigging busted. Man, I kinda feel sorry for him. Alls I'm saying is, be careful or you might end up dead-- and worse, your corpse will look stupid. Seeya!

quote:

Hey, Mister! Did you know that dolphins are super smart? I think if they're smart, they'd know how to lie.

Snappy will keep saying that he loves magic attacks, I mean obviously, he drains it! But Just like Puts said, too much eating and you'll end up dead. The trick to beat Snappy is to feed him magic until he explodes.

"Boss Event End"

I... What happened? I was sneaking a quick peek at the VR Art Museum, when...

Once I've finished my entrance exams, I'll have time to draw all the pictures I want. I'm logging off now. Bye-bye.

Yay...?

But it turned out that this didn't have anything to do with Kinap. I thought we might meet him here...

I didn't know that demons could do things like that... Plus, what he said about gathering souls bothers me.

Either way, we beat him, so it's all good. Let's go home, too.

"Hideout"

"2D Field"

"EL-115"

We have new COMP apps:

Pump Box: Displays EXP needed for the MC to reach the next level.
Nightengaler: Stops Auto-Battle when in danger.
Back Mirror: Prevents enemy blindsides.
Moon Pulser: Shows the moon's effects on the party.
Double Value: Doubles effects of Magnetite during demon negotiation. For example, offering 500 MAG will count as 1000 MAG.
Steiner: Adds Element, Mitama and Zoma fusion to the COMP.

Back Mirror is a no brainer and will probably stay equipped the entire game, the rest are optional.

He used to spend hours on end playing with Paradigm X and telling me how great it was. Now he just stares off into space. I thought he finally got over being dumped, but this is even worse than he was before.

Wait...

quote:

Aw, man, I hope not. My girlfriend dumped me because we couldn't hang out in Paradigm X. If only I had some way of getting in...

Oh, crap.

So, you can crab walk with the L button or the R button. You can also hold the B button. Holding down the B button is also what lets you walk backwards. My daddy showed me that! He knows everything! Isn't he amazing!

I wonder if the PS1/Sega Saturn version had crabwalking.

But, he's acting kinda weird right now... Maybe he's just tired...

"Home"

But, you have to hear this. She was so lifeless one moment, then the next she was right back to normal. It was like she just woke up from hypnosis or something.

I don't remember anything... Was I that bad? I thought I was just playing in the VR Art Museum...

Oh! That's right! Did you run into me in the museum? I feel like you did. I think... Was it next to the dolphin painting? Or... inside it?

Tomato's never even been to the VR Art Museum before.

Aw, really? I really think I ran into you, though...

I don't want you playing that Para-dimex anymore.

:cripes:

I know... I've got to study, right? Ugh. I've got to be a humble student... Oh, well. I guess I'll hit the books.

Really...? That was the lesson? Look, you're completely free to disagree with me here, but I think this resolution is horrendous. Tomoko felt like her mother only cared about her test scores, and instead of proving her wrong, that's exactly the first thing she mentions when we recover her soul. Come the gently caress on... This is probably just a cultural difference but it still annoys me.

......Hm? Ah, oh. Hi, Hitomi... Tomato... Welcome...

Dad, too? *sigh*

Well, at least Tomoko is safe now. See you in the next update! :atlus:

Or not. :unsmigghh:

"Suspicious Occasion"

You know me?

This presence... I... I know you! You're... Moowis!?

Moowis... That's the demon that possessed me at the Astro Museum?

I thought he ran off, but I didn't think he was going to build himself a body like that. But how do you know Nemissa!?

"Event Battle 2" :siren:Vs. Moowis (Second Form)

Cyber - Moowis

HP: 2016
Lv. 25
Nulls: Expel, Death, Mind, Nerve, Curse, Gun
Resists: Fire, Ice
Weakness: Electricity

Skills:
She Marker: Inflicts Mark.
Dynablast: Deals Skill damage to a single target. Higher damage when the target is Marked.
Zanma: Deals medium Force damage to a single target.
Agilao: Deals medium Fire damage to a single target.
Megido: Deals Almighty damage to a single target.

I hope you didn't return your demons to the COMP because Moowis is back! The fight triggers as soon as you leave your house and I have to admit... I lost a lot of progress the first time I played the game. Moowis will start the fight using She Marker against Nemissa, followed by Dynablast in the next turn. Cast a few defensive buffs or use Tarunda to reduce his ATK. In my testing, Moowis tends to attack Nemissa 9 out of 10 times. I only saw him use a basic attack against another party member once. As for the rest of his skills, try not having any Fire/Force weakness around. Megido is almighty damage, so the only way to reduce the damage is using a defensive buff like Rakukaja.

I decided to use Roma Calor for poo poo and giggles and... it actually worked! While I wouldn't recommend leaving Nemissa on low HP, using Roma Calor efficiently is satisfying as hell. Just remember to have your healer in the back row to reduce their speed and heal Nemissa after she used it.

He must have something to do with those guys who locked me up. That has to be it. Finally, a lead! I'm going to get him, not matter what. Let's go, Tomato.

Hold on. Where do you plan to go catch him? Take a look over there first.

There? Hm? There's something on the ground... What is it?

It has to be a part that fell off of Moowis body. It could be a clue to where he is.

Oh, I see. You're smart, Hitomi. Let's go show it to the other Spookies.

"Hideout"

So if we find where this part came from, we might find where the demon is staying... I see. But I don't know what this is. I'm sorry.

"Leon Automotive"... So he has to be hiding there? All right, I won't let him escape this time.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. You're going to rush into a den of demons? Just the two of you?

That Moowis knew me. He has to know something more. I'm gonna grab him and make him tell me what he knows.

But if there are demons there, then the Phantom Society may not be too far away. It'll be dangerous for just the two of you alone. We'll go, too.

All right! I've always wanted to see a real demon!

Are you dense? You only say that because you've never seen one.

We can still help, even if we can't handle demons.

Right. We may not be able to fight directly, but we can provide support. We can't let you two do all the work.

Supportive characters being useful...? I'll take it!

Phew! Quite a long update, I hope you enjoyed it. In the next one, we'll explore one of my favourite dungeons in the game, the Leon Auto Plant. See you! :atlus:

Well... The Sea Ark/Organic Energy Association exist, so the only way to run out of MAG is having 4 demons summoned at all times and constantly running away from battle. Personally, I prefer to travel with 1-2 demons to resell MAG later.

Unfortunately, the enemies in the next dungeons are not very fond of that strategy...

Two things, first is you said cryptid remarks a couple times, which sounds more like offhand remarks from bigfoot or mothman, rather than cryptic which is mysterious

Second, the whole 'study study study' bit from the mother reminds me of similar (one off) characters from Pokemon, who complain about their children spending too much time with Pokemon and not enough time studying, in a world where most industries, and likely the entire economy, revolves around Pokemon. You are living in a city entirely based around Paradigm Online, your kids being some of the few who get to familiarize themselves with it before the general launch, this is a big opportunity and likely more useful for their future (until Tomato burns the whole thing down of course) than studying would be.

Basically your character's mother is going 'computers will never catch on' in a city built around computers, she dumb.

Okay, that's embarrassing. :cripes: And...fixed, thank you.

Update 11: Leon Automotive

"2D Field"

Oh, right. From now on, the VR Art Museum is inaccessible.

"Hotel Goumaden"

"When the time comes when you can smile from the bottom of your heart, then smile. But never smile any other time. A smile without the heart behind it only desiccates the heart."

So...... Please forgive my shortcomings.

Uh...huh. Okay, I won't mention it anymore.

Fair enough. Anyway, time to fuse demons.

Airavata is quite bulky to be a healer, 289HP and 11 Endurance means he can go in the front row to get that sweet speed modifier. Thanks to Judah's Silky I'm able to pass Diarama and Media.

Principality is whatever. I guess having another Hama user can be useful.

I'm only fusing this demon because of Bufula.

A single enemy in the next dungeon has Mudo and that's enough to be considered a threat, so I buy equipment to block instant death for both the MC and Nemissa.

While this armor piece is weaker, Nemissa needs to block fire damage during this dungeon if you're playing on hard. Why's that? Well...

Yeah... More on this guy later.

Several enemies in the next dungeon have a weakness to Expel damage, so I buy 10 Segaki Rice. These work just as Hama, but as a consumable item, and allow the MC to do something else other than get hit and summon demons.

I thought I just saw something strange go into Leon Auto Plant. I wonder what that was...

Tf is his problem?

Man, you're always so angry. You need to get more calcium. Try drinking some milk or eating some kale or something.

"Leon Automotive (Electricity OFF)"

Everyone, split up and find the Main Power Room. Lunch, you're with me. Six, take Yu-Ichi with you.

Tomatoe, protect Hitomi, all right? We'll see you later.

Why do you have to protect me? Nemissa doesn't need any help.

Leader's always worrying about the team members. He's a very selfless man. Right, Tomato?

Anyway, why is it completely dark here!?

It definitely is strange. Even if it's nighttime, not having a single light is really odd...

Wait! Is this his plan...!? Be careful, everyone! If Moowis is the one behind this blackout, everyone's in danger!

Ha-ha... That oaf is trying to strike me while hidden in the darkness, huh? This should be interesting! I'll show him what it means to pick a fight with me! Let's find Moowis, Tomato!

Despite having our radar in green, there are no enemy encounters and the music is quite simple.

And of course nothing works until we turn on the power.

I thought I just saw a robot walking around. Not a construction robot, though. It walked toward the back, making robot noises...

Hmph. So he ran this way. Hey, what's in the back?

The elevator leading to the upper floors is back there. But it's inoperable because the power's out.

Epic.

D-Demon...? I said I saw a robot. Who said anything about demons...? I gotta get outta this darkness.

Gotta boot this puppy up and log in to the system... That's a good girl.

Now to send the order to begin power, aaaaand...

It looks like we got to it first, Tomatoe. Is the elevator moving, Leader?

Gimme a sec. Ummmm.... Is this it? Yeah, that's the ticket. All right, I see it. It's on.

Phew. It looks like we can move on. I don't know what kind of monster attacked you guys, so let's be extra cautious.

"Leon Automotive (Electricity ON)"

And here's one of the reasons why I LOVE this dungeon. My jaw dropped when I left the Main Power Room, only to be greeted with a new song.

See that 100-Taro? This means Back Mirror activated and prevented a blindside.

RIP Bozo.

Hmmm... So you know me. Oh, and by the looks of that COMP you have, I'd guess that we aren't enemies. But still, I shut the power off so that demons wouldn't come out. Why did you turn it back on?

Oh...

Oh, sorry... We didn't know. We're after a certain demon.

Is that so? Well, I'll let you handle this. Good luck.

She is.

If you gave Nemissa enough agility, she can outspeed and one round any demon that doesn't null fire. :unsmigghh:

Huh... No random encounters, that's weird.

There are holes here and there... Looks like someone was going around destroying things. They definitely don't want us here.

By the way, have you noticed? It seems demons don't come near this outer area, which is lucky for us.

Don't tell Six about it, though. Heh. He'd probably never leave the safe zone.

Come on, he isn't that much of a coward.

There's another elevator here, but it doesn't work just yet. Guess I should check the rest of the floors first.

Oh, right. Only the edge of the map is a safe zone. As soon as you approach the middle, your radar (assuming you're using the app like me) will start moving.

It wouldn't be a Dungeon Crawler without pitfalls... At least this one leads to a "secret area" in the first floor.

Out of the way.

Phew... Aim is able to one shot Nemissa easily. Headless Rider was a powerhouse during the VR Art Museum update, but now we're up against him...

These pigs have Mudo and are a weak to Expel, so...

:peanut:

Left.

Hey, my horoscope said that my lucky direction is left! Good things are gonna happen. Do you know how to tell fortunes, too? That's pretty awesome.

Believe in yourself!

I've been dreaming of something like this! Can I fight at your side!? You look like you know how to have a good time.

For some reason, a few treasures boxes are empty.

You don't need to leave a single demon alive to recruit it, but it definitely helps.

A new beginning.

YOU HAVE A POSITIVE STANCE, EVEN ON YOUR OWN DEATH. I ADMIRE THAT. I HAVE DECIDED... THAT I WILL GO WITH YOU.

More Agility because I do not want to deal with Spin Slash.

Two incenses, two items and some MAG.:toot:

You can exit through here, but it’s a one-way door.

This is going to hurt... Let's summon our healer.

quote:

Leanan Sidhe tends to cast Lullaby, and the 3 Sandmans can use Happy Trriger.

The wiser choice would've been to kill all 3 Sandman, but I need to recruit one to make a cool demon.

This is what 3 Endurance looks like, at least she didn't d--

*sigh*

Buffs are pretty broken in this game, by the way.

Trying to put my healer to sleep? Nice Try. This is why being in the front line is so important if you want to act faster.

Compare the initial damage of Happy Trigger with this one. Having a demon with Rakukaja at all times is very important.

Yes, you are.

Tell me about this place.

Actually, I'm having trouble with that, too. Well let's set the terms of our little arrangement, then.

Wow, thank you. You're pretty generous. Yep, I'm in your team now.

 Thanks...?

Want to see something funny?

Dumb demon with Recarmudra.

Oh yes! Please use Happy Trigger against two enemies that null Gun damage. I hate Dumb demons sometimes...

And the radar is still yellow...

If you picked Fire path Nemissa, she will have issues against those red demons since they null fire... This is why I gave her a powerful gun.

They also LOVE to spam Maragi. This is why I gave her weaker armor in exchange to being able to nullify fire attacks.

Come here, you idiot.

The MC got hit by Mudo, but it was nullified. Losing progress is never fun.

Oho~

The Schiavona, just like the Spirit Kodachi, hits the entire enemy row.

The Rikioh's Kote also nulls Death and gives 3 Strength to the MC, in exchange he will lose 4 points of Magic and will be weak to Expel. While being weak to one type of instant death sounds scary, the MC can just use a Tetraja Stone (assuming we don't get ambushed...) at the start of the turn. Remember, we're getting all these drops thanks to the Finders Keepers COMP app.

Down here, you can find a Terminal and a Healing spot.

Figures...

I guess I should explain why this update took a little longer than usual... :shepicide:

Yoma - Shiwanna

HP: 256
Lv. 32
Alignment: NEUTRAL - NEUTRAL
Personality: Calm
Repels: Expel
Weakness: Death

Skills:
Maragi: Deals fire damage to an entire row of enemies
Violet Flash: Expel-based skill with a chance to instantly kill all targets in the front row.
Markdi: Cures Mark.

I thought the Urban Terror (more on that douchebag later) was the most dangerous enemy you could find in random encounters, but this demon called Shiwanna took his place.

Here I got creamed thanks to an enemy ambush and Violet Flash, a skill with Expel damage, while wearing the Rikioh's Kote.

So I fused some demons, changed Nemissa's armor and checked his weakness at the Goumaden. Oh, would you look at that? Mudo only works against enemies in the front row!

If you try to use a Tetraja Stone to block Violet Flash...

He can still use Maragi, and it hurts. I tried to use Airavata to heal my MC instead of using a Bead, while using sleep bullets to make the enemy lose a turn, but Shiwanna casted Maragi again...

And that's how I got my first game over. I also ended up losing a lot of progress because I only save at Terminals. Hopefully my future self learned from those mistakes.

Shiwanna is tanky enough to survive Nemissa.

Denied.

:blastu:

Both Katakirauwa and Sandman started to grow on me at this point... I find demons with Loyalty skills to be quite lovely.:allears:

Nemissa learns Diarama, a stronger version of Dia.

Finally! :livintrope:

:allears:

With the power of Love, Force and Guns!

Nata Taishi is born!

Look! A Dumb demon with Meat Bullet.:sludgepal:

It's always satisfying to enter the Velvet Room/Cathedral of Shadows/Goumaden with a ton of demons and exit the place with only a few of them.

Anyway, as soon as I returned to the dungeon, the first random encounter loving destroyed me.

Once again, I forgot to save... Luckily, I managed to kill it on my own.

Enough, I don't want to have to record this update again.

Okay...

Let's see... I think we can turn on Elevator #2 from here.

Can we hurry up?

Geez, what a pain. Moowis must be really afraid of us. He really wants to keep us out of here.

Now to go all the way back to the elevator...

The third floor is completely optional, and there's a good reason for that...

Could be useful, I suppose.

*sigh*

Foul - Urban Terror

HP: 255
Lv. 31
Alignment: DARK - CHAOS
Personality: Calm
Nulls: Expel
Repels: Strike, Slash
Weakness: Stupid AI None

Skills:
Aim: Deals Gun damage to one enemy.
Happy Trigger: Deals heavy gun damage to all enemies.
Psycho Barrier: Blocks any Mind ailments for a single turn.

Meet the Urban Terror, he's an urban terrorist and the cause of many game overs when I played the game for the first time. Why? Have a look at his resistances... Are you telling me a foul demon, a race filled with evil spirits, nulls Expel? Also, what's with the Strike and Slash repel? Is it supposed to be due to the grenades on his chest? Following that logic, he should be weak to Gun damage!

In any case, Aim and Happy Trigger suck. Luckily, just like I mentioned during the Amami Airport update, his AI is terrible and he tends to use Psycho Barrier (sometimes even twice in a row...) more often. But when Happy Trigger lands...

It hurts... :gibs:

Up and at them, Nemissa! We need y-

Oh, I'm dead...

At least that's what I would say if I didn't have any kind demon with a high loyalty to take mortal blows in my place. :cawg:

See that icon on the floor? If you stand on it and stop moving...

Remember the "Secret Area"? Well, this is where you'll end up after each failed attempt. I never bothered doing this fairly when I played the game on my 3DS, but with the power of save states I'll be able to show you this place fully.

Say hi to one of the most broken skills, or in this case items, in the entire game. When using a magical mirror, any magic damage (other than Almighty) will be reflected back to the caster...infinite times! Yeah, if an enemy uses a spell with 99 hits, they'll eat those 99 hits as well. The best way to use these is with a fast MC or a very fast demon.

The King Panel will change your portraits to King Frost, hee-ho!

Oh, right... Back Mirror's description is lying to you. It doesn't prevent blindsides, it only reduces the chances of being blindsided...

Did I tell you how much I love Meat Bullet? I wish I could face several fast enemies with Meat Bullet.

And... I'm dead again.

Not!

Very funny, game...

And... We’re done here! It definitely gets easier if you can see the map beforehand, and are already used to crabwalk.

Man, that guy's such a klutz. He just gets in my way. So I told him to get his crap together. Then he started sulking, and he just said if I was gonna be a jerk, that he'd just go.

You did what...?

And then he went home. I'm glad he did. It only gets more dangerous when he's around.

...Something's wrong. You're way too confident. Normally you'd be crapping your pants...

...Wh-What!? Nothing's wrong! What are you talking about?

Ohhhh... I get it now. Demons don't appear in this area, do they? It's like what Lunch was telling us earlier. I bet that's it. That's the only way someone who's as scared of demons as you are could be so calm right now.

Dammit, Hitomi! Shut up! Unlike you and Tomatoe, I've got survival instincts!

So excuse me, Miss Strong Assertive Woman, but maybe none of my combat magazines ever prepared me to fight monsters!

Wow, what a bitch.

...Er, s-sorry about that. This is all very stressful for me!

Riding the Elevator #2, then heading to the 4th Floor will allow you to reach the boss room. Unfortunately, there are a few treasure boxes we haven't opened yet, and I'm the type of player who wants to step on every single tile and open all treasure chests. :smug:

Fall through this pitfall.

Voilà! A free helmet and a Chakra Pot.

It looked like a robot. That can't be right... Although, with the power being out, and the walkways getting destroyed, I can't really rule it out...

Notice how there's still an empty area on the 2nd Floor...

Head back to the 4th Floor and fall through here.

"Treasure Chest Battle"

Bye.

A bit overkill, but pretty good nonetheless.

This won't do...

I use Nemechi to buy Forneus, who has Makakaja at base, and Dormarth because she's cute… And has good physical damage, of course.

And finally Tuna-Roa, because it can inherit Tarukaja from Yaka.

Our stats.

And our team.

Let's do this!

"Finnegan's Entrance"

Oh wow, the workers weren't kidding when they called Moowis a robot. :stare:

Moowis, how do you know about me? You know who locked me away, don't you?

Is your master the one who locked me up? Tell me!

Whaddya mean "our"!? Who's this master?

Arrrrrgh! Stop dragging this out and tell me everything! Who are you!? How do you know about Nemissa!?

"Event Battle 2" :siren: Vs. Moowis (Third Form):siren:

Cyber - Moowis (Third Form)

HP: 3812
Lv. 36
Nulls: Expel, Death, Mind, Nerve, Curse, Skill, Gun
Resists: Fire, Ice
Weakness: Electricity

Skills:
Agilao: Deals medium Fire damage to a single enemy.
Maragion: Deals medium Fire damage to all enemies.
She Marker: Inflicts Mark.
Destroyer Pile: Deals Strike damage to a single enemy with splash damage to the rest.
Megido: Deals Almighty damage to a single target.
Megidola: Deals Almighty damage to an entire row.

Moowis is...interesting. He'll take 3 turns analyzing you, followed by marking Nemissa, using Agilao, and finally a mix between his other skills. His most dangerous attack by far is Megidola. While Almighty damage in Megaten ignores resistances, the damage can be reduced with defensive buffs like Rakukaja. It's recommended to cast Rakukaja 1-2 times on Normal and at least 2-3 times on Hard. Otherwise your MC will die, causing a game over.

Turn 1: Nothing
Turn 2: Nothing
Turn 3: Nothing
Turn 4: Nothing
Turn 5: She Marker on Nemissa
Turn 6: Agilao
Turn 7: Maragion, Destroyer Pile, Megido or Megidola
Turn 8: Maragion, Destroyer Pile, Megido or Megidola
Turn 9: Back to Turn 2

If you have a demon with Makakaja and/or Rakunda it's very easy to clown on Moowis and kill him before he even gets a chance to act. I wish this boss could use his strongest moves without having to wait 3 turns doing nothing.

"Final Event 1"

Maybe if you didn't take 3/4 turns doing absolutely nothing...

Let's go, Tomato!

"VR Tours"

What was that...!? Was it Moowis's doing, too?

If so... Then let's make him tell us what he was doing! C'mon, Tomato!

"Boss Event End"

NEMISSA... YOU FOLLOWED ME...

We have you to thank for that, Moowis. Once you possessed Hitomi, you also gave me the power to enter this world.

HMMMM... YOU REALLY HAVE LOST YOUR MEMORY... I DIDN'T GRANT YOU THAT POWER. WE'RE ALL GIVEN THAT POWER FROM THE START.

What...? A-Are you leading me astray? Or am I really from the same group as you!?

HMHMHM... HAVE YOU COME TO SEE MY END? YO DO GOVERN DEATH, AFTER ALL...

BUT... I AM NOT ALONE... THE SECOND, OR THE THIRD... WILL... DEFEAT YOU... TH-THEN, MANITOU WILL...

MANITOU... WIIIIILL...

No! M-Moowis! You didn't answer my questions! Moowis! Mooowiiiss!

Um, I don't think Moowis knew who locked you away, Nemissa. But... He seemed to know something else...

I know that! But, he knew something about me. I could have found out who I am!

...Did you really lose your memory?

I-It can't be. I'm me. I've always just been me, right? A-Anyway, let's just get out of here. I don't like it here. We're heading back to the plant.

"Kuzunoha Event End"

You just sat back and watched while we did all the work?

I didn't come here to kill demons, so why would I help? I'm here to investigate Phantom. Wherever there are demons, Phantom is always close... At least, that's what I figured. Unfortunately, I came up empty-handed.

It seems you didn't quite find what you were looking for, either.

That is true, but... Um...

You sure keep your cards close to your chest. I'm guessing your situation's complicated. Especially you...

This is a reference to the story of the first Devil Summoner. The protagonist of that game gets killed by the main villain, only to get his soul transferred to Rei's partner, Kyouji Kuzunoha. And talking about Rei's partner...

Remember him? Yeah, that's Kyouji. *sigh* I wish I could play the original Devil Summoner in English. At least a Spanish translation is close to being finished! Anyway, back to the main story.

Eh, nevermind. Getting your life story at this point isn't going to help much. But if you're going to continue fighting against Phantom, I'd advise that you at least meet with someone.

Whoa, it's not like we're all friends here yet. Why should we meet her?

I'm not forcing you to. But, she knows Phantom very well. I'm sure she'd be of help to you. You can find Madam Ginko at the Goumaden. I'll let her know to expect you.

Hey, quit deciding for us...

Hm? It seems that someone else has arrived. Time for me to be on my way.

Honestly, she's right. I have a feeling that knowing about them will be a significant part of the upcoming battle.

Killed, huh... Then we don't really have any clues about Phantom, huh...

No... We didn't really get anything...

I see...

Well, at least you guys won't be getting ambushed any more. Everyone's safe, so that's a success in my book. Let's return to the HQ. I'm a bit worried about Yu-Ichi.

You of all people are telling him everyone to just leave him alone? He's actually pretty sensitive, you know.

Hm? Okay. You can catch up with us later, then.

"2D Field"

What a dungeon... I still love the place, even after having to record multiple times after dealing with Shiwanna and Urban Terror.

Oh, right... They're part of Phantom.

"Hotel Goumaden"

Madame Ginko is another character from Devil Summoner, but as you can see, she had an entirely different design back then.

In this game she's voiced by Tara Platt, voice of Mitsuru Kirijo/Elizabeth from Persona 3 and... *siiiiigh* Edelgard von Hresvelg from Fire Emblem 3 Houses... She also voices the MC's mother.

In the JP dub she has a male voice and according to the Wiki, Japanese guidebooks refer to Ginko as a "She", making her a trans woman. Soul Hackers 2 gave Ginko a male voice in both the English and JP dub.

So, you're Tomato. And this must be Hitomi... It would appear that both of you have stepped onto a harsh path.

Wow... She's so beautiful... I expected someone scarier...

Quit gawping at her, geez. Are you just gonna stand there staring all day? Get a hold of yourself.

Hey, lady, if you've heard about us, then you know we're here to find out about the Phantom Society.

Oh, I know. But Phantom is a much bigger and more fearsome organization than you think. Pursuing them will only result in even more perilous battles. Especially for you, Tomato... Do you have the courage to carry out your will?

This dialogue choice is quite important, but only if you're playing on a NG+ file. For now, I'll just pick the first option.

I'm confident.

Carrying out one's will is the only way to learn the purpose of existence. Perhaps that is humanity's worth... It may be too late to stop you.

The Phantom Society is an organization that has controlled the world from the shadows since long, long ago. Its power stretches across the world, and now this society can even control an entire nation.

And what do goons like that want to do with this city?

I do not know the full extent of what Phantom's plans are for Amami. What I do know is that the principles behind their actions transcend the common ideals of morality and justice.

So they're not doing it for good or for evil...?

But Phantom is motivated by control. Their fight is for a completely different cause than yours.

Control...

Rei did not want to see you killed. That is why she introduced you to me. Your reason for fighting Phantom is not for me to know. However, as one who shares your objective, I shall cooperate with you as much as I can. As proof I give you this.

...A sword? It doesn't look like much.

The Nameless Sword. Much like Tomato himself. Just as Tomato obtained the COMP and became a Summoner... This sword will grow, too...

Take this to the kitchen within the Goumaden. It will be of great use to you.

Perhaps Rei saw something of that young man in you, Tomato.

What young man?

Three years ago, there was a young man who had no choice but to become a Summoner. He was killed by a Dark Summoner, but his soul possessed the body of another Summoner... Before he gained his Summoner powers, he had lived a normal life. Rei knew that young man, very well.

How strange... That sounds a lot like Tomato's situation.

The two of you are too young to die. Do not act rashly!

Thank you very much, Madam Ginko... About that Young man... whatever happened to him?

drat, I guess no cameo from the Devil Summoner MC.

I am Muramasa, chef of the S.S. Sinful. It is a pleasure to meet you.

Oui, mademoiselle. I excel in the culinary arts, but I also excel at the art of putting souls into swords. My family line has crafted swords for generations, but I have developed a new technique. The technique of imbuing the power of a demon into a sword... I think I am the only one in the world. A three-star idea, wouldn't you say? But it would be faster to show you than to explain it. Please try it out.

Sword fusion is something else I completely ignored on my first playthrough, but unlike Zoma fusion, I would like to give it a try this time.

"Shichisei Muramasa is the standard sword, and its strength depends on the demon's level and stats. For example, fusing a demon with high level, agility and luck will result in a sword with higher accuracy.

However, certain demons will give the Nameless Sword unique features, such as: Basic attacks hitting an entire row, status effects, elemental properties, etc.

To avoid struggling against enemies who null fire and are weak to ice, I'll fuse Tuna-Roa to create an ice sword.

:siren:Sword Fusion:siren:

There's also a Sword Compendium. Creating a sword for the first time will automatically be registered into the Compendium, after that you'll have to manually register the swords.

No hard feelings, right?

I can't really discuss it right now... I need you to come back to HQ. ASAP.

"Hideout"

Do you know this Finnegan?

So this WAS about you guys... To tell you the truth, there are signs that this posting has been accessed before we found it.

Dammit... That idiot.

Shut the gently caress up, Six.

That's so reckless! Finnegan's a killer. At this rate...

Yeah. We need to save him...

I just told him the truth!

Enough! There's no time for this. Let's just go.

Oho~

Finnegan crossed the line with this one. In the next update, we'll explore the Amami Float and bring our boy Yu-Ichi back. See you! :atlus:

Quackles posted:

How do you know which demons can pass on a specific skill to a target demon, anyway?

TL;DR: Demons tend to have a hidden affinity, you can check it at the Megami Tensei fusion calculator, but it usually revolves around their resistances.

Using this demon as an example.

Airavata can inherit Force Skills because he drains that element.

Katakirauwa reflects Death, so it can inherit Dark skills.

If you're wondering "Shouldn't Katakirauwa inherit Force skills too?" Well, after doing more testing I noticed how the skill inheritance has a hierarchy. For example, if a demon repels Fire and drains Force, the game will give priority to Fire skills during fusion. Things get trickier when talking about healing skills and buffs/debuffs. If a demon has a Fire affinity and you can only pass healing skills and buffs, the Goumaden will give priority to the healing skills.

To clarify, blue skills are Extra skills and cannot be transferred through fusion. Every other skill here can be transferred, however...

Despite draining Electricity, this demon has an Ice affinity.

During fusion, the game transfers the strongest healing skill which is Diarama, then searches for a skill to match the Ice affinity, this being Mabufu from Principality. Despite having 3 skills to pick from Dormarth (Tetraja, Makarakarn and Tarunda) none of these are picked because they're part of the "Support Affinity." These skills being buffs, debuffs and such. Instead, the game looks for another healing skill and picks Media.

Airavata's base kit is: Zanma, Rakukaja and Paraladai. Diarama and Media were inherited by Silky and the skills from Nekomata were completely ignored, despite having an extra slot.

To sum up, Soul Hackers fusion is way too convoluted. :hmmyes:

Yeah, uh, that's making me really grateful for how this works in Persona 5.

Rakukaja and Taru/Makakaja are the skills you really want to have around; Rakunda is way harder to get because it belongs to the "Support Affinity". Maybe I'm just coping, but I like how limited fusion is in Soul Hackers. Trying to pass every single skill would make demons less unique, in my opinion. Which is the same reason why I love the Loyalty System, even if can be annoying at times...or you have to deal with Dumb demons. :tif:

I'm curious: What is your opinion of Strange Journey?

If you want the short version: Strange Journey is easily one of my favorite games. The setting, the combat, the story, the characters, the music. All of them are just... *chef's kiss* peak Megaten. Now, for the long version...

The game starts a bit slow, but the intro sets the mood perfectly. The world is going to hell, and it's your job to save whatever its left. Failing in your task means death for both you and the rest of the human race. No pressure, right? There's also this really cool detail about the quiz to calculate your initial stats and growths. One of the questions says "Will the mission succeed?" And you have three answers: Yes, No and I don't know. Did you know that is impossible to answer with anything but "Yes"? The Demonica will say "Invalid Input, try again" if you pick the other two. Little details like that is what makes the intro memorable, despite being quite lengthy.

Characters: I love the Alignment reps this game has. They're probably one of the best, if not the best, alignment reps in the series. All 3 of them feel so human and have compelling reasons to act the way they do. Props to the Red Sprite crew, they made me change my Alignment right at the end of the game. And this is coming from someone who doesn't like Neutral outside of Devil Survivor.

Combat: Demon-coop is very underrated and I wish more games would use it (not counting Soul Hackers 2 btw) as the main battle system. While I have nothing against Press Turn, using demon alignments to determine the amount of damage you deal is just fantastic and it adds a lot of replay value. It also makes you use a lot of demons you wouldn't pick otherwise. Some fights are absolute dogshit though. Two bosses have a skill called Pure Blue. Pure Blue removes all debuffs and heals over 1k HP. This doesn't seem like a huge deal until you realize, they can use this skill EVERY. SINGLE. TURN. Other than that, I don't have a lot of negative things to say about the original combat.

Dungeon design: The dungeons in Strange Journey are a bit of a mixed bag. I personally dislike Delphinus and Grus. But then you have dungeons like Eridanus. I'm not censoring that one because even people who haven't played SJ know about it, and those who post the Eridanus map out of nowhere to criticize it deserve to be consumed by the Schwarzwelt have no idea what they're talking about. Jokes aside, the dungeons are pretty good. One criticism I have is the repetitive music, though.

I want to finish this somewhat long answer talking about Redux.

People tend to hate Redux because it makes the game "too easy" giving you access to new Sub-Apps, removing the Sub-App limit, adding Commander skills, etc. Personally, I couldn't disagree more. Commander skills make your character way more relevant than ever. In the DS version, the space marine is stuck for 90% of the game as the item user and demon summoner. Commander Skills add a whole new layer of strategy, especially if you plan on challenging the new bosses. And come on... is anyone really going to complain about having a reliable way to prevent ailments...?

I also noticed there is no Redux LP in the Master List, only the DS version. I guess I could give it a try, eventually. :allears:

Petiso posted:

I was going to say the same thing. Part of me misses the more restrictive fusion systems since it forced you to make compromises and try different things. In the newest games I feel you just fuse a Dragon Quest party (physical attacker, magical attacker, healer/supporter) that you fuse into stronger versions of themselves every two dungeons.

The demon affinities introduced in SMT IV: Apocalypse and SMT V kind of help... But at the end they all fall in the "Dragon Quest party" archetype you mentioned. Funny how not allowing demons to gain EXP is what motivates the player to keep fusing them.

Man, they're all so randomly hostile towards Six, I guess they're all equipped with weapons that can hurt the demons like the MC is but still I'd say it's Leader, Lunch and Yu-Ichi the ones with a death wish running so carelessly to dens of demons without many means to defend themselves.

Yeah, I wonder how they manage to travel safely through the dungeons. I don't remember any of them mentioning weapons or even fighting demons. :magemage:

Honestly my main issue with Six is the way he treats Yu-Ichi and the bad habit of leaving his teammates behind. He got separated from Lunch back in Algon NS, and now Yu-Ichi too. Nemissa even called him a chicken at the start of the game and he's more flustered than anything, but as soon as Yu-Ichi dares to speak he treats him like poo poo for no reason. I already finished recording the next update and I feel like he crossed a line... But then again, you're completely free to disagree with me.
