My first ***** rating of 2024. I saw someone describe this as a love letter to their 2015 Dream Gate match (which was also ***** & probably a top 3 match of that year) & yeah, that's not unfair. Except it's that but with a spin on it: Shingo Takagi is now the undisputed star of the pair, while Mochizuki is old, he turns 54 a week after this show aired, & they play with that on top of the nods to their past battles (although much like the great Okada Tanahashi matches, you don't have to have seen them all to appreciate the fantastic match, it's just a bonus for those who have, another layer you can get something out of), with Mochizuki bumping like crazy & really turning the clock back a decade (& it's not like he wrestles like an old man normally!). Absolutely essential viewing, even if you're not a normal DG watcher.

It's amazing, in theory. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, wrestling (well & some MMA), from live coverage of NJPW's Road to New Beginning show on the 24th January, to tape delayed shows like this ZERO1, to a magazine style show like Battlemen which covers "shows this week" & then Occupation of the Indiez where you'll get clips from the smaller groups like Heat-Up or Secret Base. It's a god send really. But with all that time to fill, why the gently caress do they insist on cutting down shows like this ZERO1 show to fill a 2 hour block??? Ah, really got to fit in that 8th repeat of the week of some 2021 clap crowd era New Japan show? C'mon. Mio Momono vs Sareee & Kohei Sato vs Satsuki Nagao both looked really quite good, potential HMs, but were brutally cut to 3-4 minutes. And it seems so unnecessary, "we do this because we've always done it". Dawg, you got the time to just show us the whole drat thing, trust me. No one would rather see *checks schedule for today* ZERO1's 2019 Happy New Year show for example. Anyway, just wanted to get that off my chest even if it'll change nothing

A match with Abe, Nomura & Sekimoto is rarely going to be less than ***¼ anyway, but yeah, easy HM. MOTYC 2nd January Big Japan New Year Battle Beginning Big Japan World Strong Heavyweight Title Yuya Aoki(c) vs Leyton Buzzard Watch this here First time I've actually watched Buzzard I think, he's been around BJW for a while, though he did face Astronauts last year I haven't seen that yet. He looked good here with a great wrestler. Aoki is a guy people should be watching though. Will say though, I'm bummed I only needed to watch 2 matches on a BJW Korakuen show, because this card was littered with garbage US deathmatch wrestlers, but hey, if you really want to see Violent J from the Insane Clown Posse in a deathmatch then this is the card for you I guess. Or 2024 Drake Younger tagging with Abby Jr & Ryuji Ito? But for me, a show with Crazy Lovers & Yankee Two Kenju on it & yet zero deathmatches I want to watch is a bummer. Obviously they've had better in the past, Go isn't what he was but Kenoh? Kenoh is. Kenoh IS NOAH you could almost say...Actually, you could literally say that if he wins, because if Go loses he loses the rights to his catchphrase too. Thanks for that genius extra stakes NOSAWA, because it was definitely needed.

Seems like their stuff goes up on their Patreon first & then drops on Fite TV+ about a month later as far as I can tell, but they stuck this on Youtube. Slater is apparently signed with TNA but hasn't actually appeared in America for them? He's only 19 so maybe they are wisely letting him grow while having first refusal if anyone else sniffs around? I dunno. HM 5th January Association les Professionnels du Catch 20th Anniversary Aigle Blanc vs Mustafa Ali Watch this here First post-WWE Ali match I've seen & it's also possibly the first contemporary French wrestling match I've seen. APC are a regular running in the Parisian suburbs, Aigle Blanc is one of their most highly regarded homegrown talents & had about 6 weeks in Japan with All Japan last summer, hopefully he goes back. (Right now the European scene has been pretty rich pickings for smaller Japanese groups, Big Japan have been loaded with people like Leyton Buzzard, Ender Kara & Tempesta) MOTYC 7th January Osaka Pro New Year Special Osaka Light Heavyweight Title Ryuya Matsufusa(c) vs Billy Ken Kid Watch this here When Osaka Pro was resurrected by Zeus in 2022 I fully intended to check them out when I could but just never got around to it. But seeing this match I was intrigued. Matsufusa is one of the younger guys in the company, not from the original run of OPW, only debuted in 2019 & I've only seen him a couple of times on AJPW shows in Osaka. Meanwhile Billy Ken Kid is about as OPW as it gets, they were his main gig from 2002 until 2014, & after they mostly stopped running he started working mainly for Dotenbori Pro, another Osaka based group that was made up mainly of guys you'd have seen for Osaka Pro in the previous years. It's really cool to see an Osaka Pro match getting talked about for probably the first time in nearly 15 years & this is well worth being talked about.

HM 5th January CMLL Super Viernes El Barbaro Cavernario vs Esfinge Watch this here Feel like there was a while that Cavernario kind of just wasn't very fussed & I stopped hearing about him but the last year or so he's clearly found his mojo again & it's real fun because he's such an effortlessly charismatic guy. Also Zacarias el Perico in his corner is a proper little poo poo, a very fun rudo second. Wish CMLL would use the overhead camera shot slightly less though. MOTYC 5th January CMLL Super Viernes Best 2 out of 3 Falls Mascara Dorada vs Templario Watch this here Fantastic wrestling. First fall a bit sloppy but once they get going it gets going. Probably going to get a lot more attention than CMLL usually get because it got the ***** in the Observer (I think the first ever ***** for CMLL from Meltzer?), & while I'm not quite that high on it I do think it's a terrific showcase for Dorada & as good an excuse as any to catch some CMLL. Final fall is pretty terrific all told. You can see why the company are getting behind this dude like this. And you can see why people are high on CMLL as one of the best promotions in the world right now (if not the very best of 2023 according to many). And Templario deserves a nod too, terrific base here.

WMOTYC 27th January All Japan New Year Giant Series Night 4 Three Current Blast Bats Death Match Atsushi Onita, Great Kojika & Raijin Yaguchi vs Mr Pogo, Onryo & Takumi Sakurai Watch this here, if you dare Ho boy. It's yer granda & his mates with some fireworks & baseball bats. Onita, 66. Kojika, 81 (this guy is so old that he actually debuted while Rikidozan was still alive). Yaguchi, 61. Pogo, 54 (not the original Mr Pogo, this is BJW's former Shadow WX). Onryo, age unknown but he debuted in 1995 after impressing doing university pro wrestling so we can probably conservatively estimate 50, possibly older. Takumi Sakurai, at 34 the baby of the match. Average age, about 57. Which honestly feels low for how this match went. I mean, it's impressive The Great Kojika can still get in the ring without dislocating his hip or something, but boy does he have the lightest strikes you've ever seen. Play wrestling with your small child you'd hit them with chops like this. The explosions were impressive, they always are, Onita knows how to make big bangs. Unfortunately everything else was hellish to watch. And to add insult to injury, it's a long segment, included setup & cleanup time. The previous match ended about 1 hour 20 into the video. The next match starts at 2 hours 10. Now, they go into an intermission as part of the cleanup & I'm sure were selling merch & photos etc but good lord. Just went on & on & on & I had to turn it off, I was no longer in the mood to watch wrestling.

HM 21st January GLEAT Ver.8 UWF Rules Hartley Jackson vs Tetsuya Izuchi Watch this here I was enjoying this until Jackson started doing mounted headbutts, the ref pulled him off to yellow card him & then on the restart Izuchi started headbutting Jackson in reply & then I liked it even more, enough to put it to HM level. But then I'm a sucker for a good UWF rules match, eternally bummed that CIMA seems to have pushed out that side of GLEAT. House show in the sense that guys aren't working like it's a Budokan main event but also that is replaced with a lot of really enjoyable character work, like Yuma Aoyagi goofing around with New Period, & Atsuki basically stealing HAYATO's look. Including having a really bad impressions of the tattoos draw on by pen. Really amusing, & the work was real good too. Sometimes wrestling can just be fun & should get props for that. HM 7th February Dragongate Truth Gate Night 2 M3K (Masaaki Mochizuki & Mochizuki Jr) vs M3K (Susumu Mochizuki & Yasushi Kanda) Watch this here The last match of M3K & it falls apart with everyone kind of attacking everyone else. MOTYC 7th February Dragongate Truth Gate Night 2 Elimination Tag Team Match Natural Vibes (BIG BOSS Shimizu, Jacky Funky Kamei, Kzy, Strong Machine J & U-T) vs Z-Brats (Gianni Valletta, ISHIN, KAI, Shun Skywalker & Yoshiki Kato) Watch this here Dragongate are really unsurpassed at these kind of matches. Stardom do them well, so do New Japan, but this is just great character work, great story telling, and some real good work all in a package. You should catch this. Stick around for the post-match to get some high quality unhinged Shun Skywalker too.

HM 7th February DDT Into The Fight Tour Night 2 HARASHIMA vs Yukio Sakaguchi Watch this here Yukio's retirement match. They kick each other hard a lot, although it starts with some really interesting & fun grappling. HM 9th February 70 Years of Pro Wrestling on Nippon TV Dan Tamura, Kento Miyahara & Ryuki Honda vs Zennichi Shin Jidai (Atsuki Aoyagi, Rising HAYATO & Yuma Aoyagi) Watch this here This was, well, the name says it all really. Nippon TV put on a show with guys from All Japan & NOAH, the 2 promotions they've worked with, to celebrate their involvement with pro wrestling in Japan. Even though it's been what, 15 years since NTV actually showed wrestling on their main network channel. But hey, it's 70 years since they broadcast Rikidozan & Masahiko Kimura going 1 hour with The Sharpe Brothers in Kuramae Kokugikan, the precursor to the current Ryogoku Kokugikan/Sumo Hall. There's 2 interpromotional matches & 2 matches where each promotion puts their best foot forward. This was All Japan's effort & it's kind of perfect for that role as just taking the opportunity to get your young contracted talent on TV to an audience who may not have watched much All Japan since the NOAH split. Which in turn I think makes it a pretty good entry point for you, the person who should watch All Japan. (Meanwhile NOAH's match had 1 rookie & 5 guys over the age of 35, while here Kento Miyahara is the oldest guy at 34, so we can see who put their best foot forward here) MOTYC 9th February 70 Years of Pro Wrestling on Nippon TV Kaito Kiyomiya vs Yuma Anzai Watch this here Meanwhile this is one of the interpromotional matches, a clash of 2 future aces. The result was never in doubt, Kiyomiya, despite his booking problems, is a former GHC Heavyweight Champion and should be NOAH's ace right now, while Yuma Anzai is 18 months into the business. A remarkable talent for someone with relatively little talent but yeah, it's Japan, he's not winning this. None the less, this is terrific, both guys get elevated & I can't recommend it enough.

Night 1 I think Kevin Ku was slightly off the pace of the other 3 guys, night 2 obviously even better. It's Astronauts.
