We definitely also have to do something about the fact that the GOP run states are cutting their food benefits. Here to the west of Orlando the food banks and churches are having trouble getting enough donations. I have never seen this many people.

I do outreach at a tiny church and a couple saturdays ago we fed about 300 people. I know thats anecdotal, but I would have to imagine we are seeing this because the pandemic SNAP benefits ended.

What about presidents who were ok with doing things that were obviously evil under contemporary social and moral norms, but kept them secret (or tried to)? The covert interventions in the developing world authorized by Eisenhower, JFK, and Johnson were more or less directly responsible for millions of deaths and the destitution of many more, it just wasn't openly known until 25 or 50 years after the fact. Reagan and Bush's involvement in Central America is one of the root causes for instability in that region to this day, and that was only significant because they got caught after being directly told by Congress to stop.

I cannot stress enough reading the book 'Washington Bullets' by Vijay Prashad.

It really gives a more in depth look at how the Monroe Doctrine has shaped Central and South America all the way through the Bolivarian Revolution.

There is something that a comedian can do to political discourse that politicians surely will not. They can punch the politician to a wide ranging audience. They can bring the negatives that those politicians create to the public. They lampoon those politicians where the news is not going to.

Most folks are not like us. Most folks are not interested in politics enough to watch political content...add some comedy to it though and you start getting people recognizing that they really do need to pay attention.

I feel like I end up typing the phrase "deliberately misinterpreting" an awful lot in this thread

(It also means she doesn't fly commercial or with kids otherwise she would understand that this is a big loving deal for traveling families and another example of airlines bleeding people dry with bullshit fees for things that used to be considered just common courtesy, back in my day when corporations behaved with integrity and compassion)

Do you remember when you could just travel with your stuff? Like you could bring clothes/toiletries with you where you had to go. What about when kids could travel alone so if you are a co parent that lives in a different state you don't need to buy seven tickets just to have a visit with your kid.

I also can remember when if you were hungry or thirsty they just gave you something.

This is something I try to point out to my son: When you make it so there are only a few companies that control all the routes and actually bid between them to keep rates up the only thing you get is customer abuse and rich shareholders. You are at their mercy. Its the same with ISPs in most places. Don't like it? No other companies fly there, or no other ISPs offer the service you need.

Something I don't think got much press was the gouging that happened during covid. Inflation was nearly a quarter gouging. I didnt hear much about it.

I would second this because Tim Pool, and Smol Ben et al, also seem very much like the "I am popular and people like me! Really I am! Look at the numbers of my twitter follows etc." kind of people to both buy in to and get scammed by a bot network.

But I wouldn't put too much credence to it, because people do like listening to their own opinions repeated back to them, and that those who disagree with those opinions are stupid and evil, Particularly political opinions. And podcasting in general does tend to attract obsessive para-social fans. So it is also likely that these right wing arseholes yelling into the abyss, have found an audience receptive to being yelled at/to.

These folks are actually popular but a lot of it comes from investment from rightwing think tanks in the case of Daily Wire and Denis Prager, and in the case of Tim Pool he got popular reporting on occupy wall street but over the years he has basically changed his belief structure to cultivate an audience that is grift-able. The times he has interviewed people and I have watched it he just comes off as completely uninformed, or misinformed.

This is all after the rightwing pipeline thing on youtube. Basically rightwing groups started buying up all kinds of ads and poo poo for Crowder, and Prager, and Shapiro so they started having their videos recommended a lot more.

"No problem man, watch and learn *cracks knuckles*"

The really hosed up part man....Is it works on their base.

They have this media ecosystem that will take that Tuberville tweet and reverse engineer it to mean something that isn't so blatantly stupid and cruel.

They have been fed this stream of propaganda that ends up convincing already gullible people to believe that democrats kill babies after birth. I mean the head of the party said that. They also cut anything anyone that is not a republican up so that it is the most disingenuous poo poo. Seriously though, The bloodbath thing. I went back and listened to the majority of the speech. I think he really did mean that it was about the car companies. However, everything he said during that riff was just a bunch of complete bullshit but once again this is why they have that media ecosystem. It will never be challenged and they know their base will never check it the way I went back and listened to that speech.

The biggest problem though is we also have a media ecosystem totally that wants things to be a horse race even though everyone in that media ecosystem knows what is going on. They just choose to imperil billions of people because "It sells political ads". It really fucks any chance at getting lots more independent voters.

these types think everyone else is evil and brainwashed by propaganda because they DIDN'T fall for it too. i have zero hope for any of them at this point until the propaganda behind their views is severely diminished.

Im with you. I am definitely in the de-platforming works camp.

Watching what happened with alex jones and his now very public constant meltdowns on air has made me happy. He is one of the worst.

I used to think you would need to have leftwing media sources that have the same type of investment that the Daily Wire has and then I realized that it will never happen. The reason daily wire gets funded or prager u gets funded is by huge rightwing think tanks that are way more interested in getting dumb, lost, young men to learn to vote against their interests in favor of rich people while simultaneously panning elites...That isn't how it happens on the left. If you lie you get called out pretty drat quick by a bunch of people.

If I ever think a lie or something they have said is going to far on the right ....their audience just weaves it into the tapestry of bullshit.

Something that kinda hurts. I love my step bro. He is one year older than me and I used to love when we would go pick him up in Philly, or when he would come down because he is just a genuinely fun person to be around.

He had a very different upbringing from me. He grew up in a nice neighborhood, always had good clothes, food, never wanted for anything...He was also around a bunch of rich people. I however, was in poverty and all that entails. The experiences I had and things I saw shaped me just as his lack of struggle shaped him. I think it may have made him more susceptible to FYGM mentality.

I was lost for years. Homeless, wrapped up in working and drugs...and then I finally come home. He visits. We are both a lot older. He immediately starts talking about how great joe Rogan and Jordan Peterson are. So I just say yeah Joe Rogan is alright entertainment but don't put any stock in science or politics he espouses. I also told him that Jordan Peterson is just a douche bag with a degree that constantly spouts bullshit with a fine veneer of healthy thought wrapped in the disguise of philosophy.
