Was that the one Zaslav wrote off and then un-wrote off because directors and writers cancelled meetings with WB not wanting to spend years working on movies that would be thrown in the vault and never see the light of day?

SE was also a huge diva over Cloud returning for Smash Ultimate, and with the bare minimum content he had as a DLC character and not even translated voice acting. I think they had a huge branding thing over the FF7 remake still being in development.

They've been pretty prone to comically baffling decisions in recent years, like giving Yuji Naka free reign to completely gently caress up Balan Wonderworld, and still trying to make NFT games happen despite clearly absolutely no one below management level giving a poo poo.

Weirdly enough everyone was surprised said remake actually remembered the characters' personalities, that Cloud is a huge dork pretending to be a stoic and Aerith takes no poo poo.

I think it's more S-E is very arbitrary (and often incorrect) who they trust to handle their precious babies, who get basically free reign with them, like Nomura being basically the only guy other than the FF14 dude they let direct a game anymore.

Since making him their trademark and logo, they're so locked down on Mickey never doing anything that might not align perfectly with their brand projection that I don't think there's any way they could do a decent long story with him.

This is about where people bring up the Mickey shorts on YouTube, but thing is it's far too little, far too late, and Disney doesn't do poo poo to promote them, they're even more buried than the rest of their TV animation. That and I think Disney flat out doesn't know how to do long form stories anymore, and seems to actively sabotage anyone who tries.

When the topic is Disney, it should be pretty clear that it's not just about reaching the kids of today- the point is Disney totally squandered the reach it had in the 80s and 90s when there was far fewer competition for children's eyeballs, and entire generations grew up knowing Mickey only as a mascot with less personality than Chuck E Cheese, or exclusively in boring edutainment for babies they left behind as soon as possible to watch Transformers, Ninja Turtles, and Pokemon. (where as formulaic and often juvenile as they can be, they at least aren't boring.) Nowadays, a handful of shorts are absolutely nothing compared even to their own remaining cartoons like Phineas and Ferb, let alone the YouTube deluge or juggernauts like Paw Patrol and Bluey. Mickey ends up in the position of Barney where while entertaining for the target audience, the moment they start feeling too old for it, they get immediately and permanently discarded, and that becomes trouble when you want to use Mickey as a mascot to sell to any other audience.

Eh, Sora is very marketable and even most Kingdom Hearts fans have no idea what's going on with the story. It'd probably be the most comprehensible plot Disney has put out in a while at this point anyway.

Also incidentally, Sora and all Kingdom Hearts original characters are iirc actually owned by Disney, they just let S-E make the games. All S-E owns are the Final Fantasy characters that occasionally appear and associated lended material like the spells.

That's kind of a theme with Illumination given that's kinda how the Mario movie's described. The visuals are great and there's lots of good gags but the stories don't got a lot of connecting tissue, clearly more thrown together from setpieces than really plotted out.

It's at least as old as Batman The Animated Series, there's a villain like that who's in two episodes.

Baby Doll is kind of her own thing, but I mean more specifically an adventuring sidekick/kid hero who becomes the equivalent of a former child star. There's one episode with a whole support group of them including what is pretty obviously actual Johnny Quest. (They just don't use the full name after a while because the network complained, but it's clearly the same character)

Heck, the new DuckTales even kinda had one of those. One very major villain is introduced pretty much as one of the OG kid sidekicks... who went down in history as being terrible at it, and he HATED it, to the point where he wants to get rid of 'adventure' entirely as an adult.

It's a pretty proven pattern in pop culture, where a franchise's owners have hosed it up or abandoned it, then there's a morose fanbase up for grabs for the next best thing. Bonus points if you can get the original creators on board. Bloodstained Ritual of the Night, Rebel Moon, Death Stranding, even Palworld.

The trick is there's a very big difference between 'the discourse' and people actually talking about the show. The latter are usually actually enjoying themselves, and talking about actual things, like the character dynamics, the implicit worldbuilding and foreshadowing, the silly visual running gags and what their favourite songs are. The Discourse tends to be people talking about fans and how dare they talk about things, with the actual media itself being almost peripheral beyond judging whether the show presents the correct moral values based on reading its Wikipedia article, and in general on the level of the guy who went after the poster with the username of the villain from Revolutionary Girl Utena.

To be fair, both recent shows that bring back the the Caballeros emphasise that the other two are just as big as deadbeats as Donald, and Donald's at least a single dad and part-time globetrotting adventurer with a crazy-rear end family.

One of the sadder bits of the new Ducktales being cut off when it was was that we only got a bit of Daisy and Donald, because they updated the dynamic in a really nice and less somewhat-problematic way while still feeling true to the characters, and it seemed like there was going to be a bit of depth there.

Yeah, and in a way that makes sense given the updated context; Daisy would come off as a complete rear end in a top hat nowadays being shrewish and demanding to a boyfriend who already barely keeps his head above water and struggles with being essentially a single parent, but having them be more 'you and me against the world' and dealing with the insane shenanigans of the circles they live in works really well.

Of course, context is the tricky bit; the way the Disney mascots get treated as more archetypes than characters with consistent traits or contexts makes it weird. 'Donald as effectively a struggling single parent' is actually a genuine theme of a lot of older stuff, but rarely mixed with 'Donald as a bachelor trying to not piss off his girlfriend'. Came to mind watching the somewhat obscure yet recent Three Caballeros show (which is a weird mix of beautiful animation and kinda inconsistent and dated writing that almost feels like something that was made in the 90s and kept in the vault til now) omits the nephews entirely, but instead gives April, May and June the spotlight as the wise-beyond-their-years triplets who riff on Donald but are also genuinely supportive of him and help him deal with his adventure shenanigans and getting his life and relationship together. It's a very different approach from the new DuckTales, but also a valid one and clearly thought out.
