In the grim darkness of the 41st Millenium, there is only war.

That’s especially true in this case, as we are dealing with the kilometer long ships that ply the void between worlds, and try to murder each other in the most hostile conditions known to man.
This is Battlefleet Gothic Armada 2, and we’re going to be taking the helm of these ships.

BFG: Armada 2 is a real time strategy game with a turn based campaign. We will be moving giant ships around space, blowing stuff up and listening to men with very deep voices shouting at each other about who worships the god emperor the hardest, and how they're all about to die. Gloriously, for the aforementioned God Emperor.
Okay. let's back up,

What the hell is Warhammer 40,000?

I’m going to assume you’ve been living under a rock for the last 40 years, and give you the extreme cliff notes background.
Warhammer 40k started as a tabletop game back in the 80’s, its now the dominating force in the industry despite not actually being any good for the last 20 of those. Okay, maybe my own personal leanings are coming through here, but rules wise, Mantic, Legion and pretty much anything else have beaten anything Games Workshop have put out in a long time.
Why is it so popular? The Lore. The lore is amazing as long as you love stupid over the top sci fi - this is what invented the idea of Grimdark, where there are no good guys, only death.

Ten thousand years ago, the immortal God Emperor decided to rebrand humanity after ten thousand years or so of the “age of Strife” where humanity lost most of its tech and ability to travel the stars.
To help him forge the new Imperium of Man, he created twenty(one - it’s complicated) ten foot tall superhumans, each with their own legion of 8 foot tall slightly less superhuman soldiers.
The problem is that all space travel is based on moving through another dimension called the Warp (or the immaterium if you feel fancy). This makes interstellar travel possible, but it is inhabited by literal demons and dark gods who may or may not feed on souls.

These gods corrupt half the remaining Primarchs and lead by Horus start a civil war. The Imperium wins, but not before Horus mortally wounds the Emperor and he’s put into the golden throne to preserve what’s left so he can continue to guide mankind for all eternity. (or to keep the corpse alive so everyone can navigate by his physical death scream)

Yeah, That went well

Ten thousand years later, and humanity is trying to not get killed by all the hostile forces in the universe, as well as trying to stop people learning about, and then getting corrupted by the forces of Chaos - the aforementioned dark gods.
Of course, this means the imperium of man is a happy place that is in no way a fascist-feudal theocracy that relies on inquisitors to kill up to and including entire planets. No, this is not the case at all…..

Jump forward to now, and Abbadon, the kind-of leader of the Chaos forces is about to launch the 13th Black crusade to defeat the Imperium and feed all of humanity's souls to his dark gods. In front of his stand the fortress world of Cadia, a militarized world that guards the entrance to the Eye of Terror - a rent in space where the real world and the warp meet.

First up, I’m going to play through the prologue - this is the in game tutorial, but it also has a huge amount of cutscenes and back story thrown in before we then move on to the Imperial campaign!

So, enough waffle - let’s get this ship going!

The imperial campaign begins with some poor sod who has been lost in the warp for 800 years dropping back into another hellish fight.

The game then walks me through the campaign turns.

Other than that looking forward to this, the imperial campaign in particular is a lot of fun with its combination of things to manage.

Today I push on to clear the remains of the Cadia sector of the worst of my chaotic foes.

I only lose a few Space Marines. They are easily replaceable, right?

Never really liked the cutscenes with the 'moving' picture effect. Feels a bit... Well, cheapening of something that could have been simply better in stills?

Regardless, this LP has inspired me to give this another go. While listening to a podcast or two while I'm at it.

Also provides good opportunities for coming up with stupidly arrogant names for the ships.

Yeah, the cutscene choice is a odd one.

And you also bring up a very good point I didn't even realise - if we can rename ships - lets get some good names in!

I deal with the last chaos fleets in the Caidia sector in neat and tidy fashion - the ships names are in, and soon we shall expand into the next sector!

The Eldari are up next - and their ships hit hard, dance away, but crack if you can actually hit them!

The new sector looks like it’s going to be fuuuuuun!

Oof. Oof. These are some bruising battles - the Eldar melt through my ships here, and the heavier Chaos cruisers can take a beating.

These "victories" may well cost me big in the long term.

After a couple of brutal wins, it's fine to see if I can sort my economic situation and get this rolling again.

As you can see from the thumbnail, this is going to be an interesting one!

I'm fighting my urge to just concentrate on the economy and actually buy ships, not the ways of making ships.

Let’s take on the Necrons - and the last of those Eldar Pirates!

The necrons are interesting, but seems like less of a threat than the Eldar, who are responsible for most of my losses this campaign.

After a brutal encounter with the orks, the main job is breaking an Eldar stronghold.

I need to make the decision if I concentrate on the main missions - I get the feeling the whack-a-mole is only going to get worse, and I should concentrate on getting the job done rather than trying to hold the entire map against 4 other hostile races throwing huge fleets at me!

What do you guys think?

That game-ness ambiguity between either storyline missions gating escalation or storyline missions being independent of escalation is always annoying to face.

Also you linked episode 12 instead of 13.

Fixed the link!

But yeah, the story missions add in new challenges, but the invasions are coming from everywhere now, and I can't have the fleets needed to face 4 1,200 fleet strength invasions a turn.

Chronische posted:

It's also very important to keep developing your fleet commanders and ships' levels while you can! That, and building up resources to grow your battle groups. Phasing out most of the lighter vessels in exchange for cruisers with maybe one or two escorts, or even Battle/Grand cruisers (though that'd take quite a bit of whack-a-mole) is pretty important, because light cruisers become little better than escorts after no time flat.

Yeah, escorts are popping in seconds now - their active scan is great against Eldar, but they have no life expectancy.

Hey Grey, dunno if you noticed, but some of your fleet commanders have unlocked some upgrade slots, but also, in battle, the Space Marines have a 2nd Lightning strike that IIRC bypasses shields call "For the Chapter" that is an order, and is only limited by the amount of troops on your ships. All lightning strike bonuses also apply to it. So you can literally do lightning strike twice in a row from each space marine ship.
