real question time: can you even do static linking on windows? because i'm mainly not using windows when compiling, i don't really use VC, so mingw/winelib is my basic reference anyway, for windows, i see a couple of .lib files in with the dlls in /lib. are those the static libraries? or does static linking still yield a dll anyway?

with the point of possible confusion that (if i understand it correctly anyway) that you can get .lib files that are static libraries in themselves, and .lib files which glues the resulting executable up with a .dll (which *sounds* real elegant for the linker but presumably is purely an annoyance for a modern toolchain)
