I could have sworn blowing up a dropship used to do something. It seems like all the bots recently have just been dropping out anyway and gently landing on their feet like cats. Except for the few that get stuck under the smouldering ship because it crashing also doesn't seem to kill anything anymore either? Am I crazy, or did a downed ship used to kill everything on and under it and now it doesn't?

Edit: Unrelated but had this happen in a rescue mission:

Also I can't wrap my head around the difficulty options. The actual difficulty seems really inconsistent. Fun as heck game tho A++. Hope we get more side arms and one handers and that chargers go extinct.

I can’t believe there’s people arguing against extremely hard difficulty levels that require practice and team co-ordination. Why would you want to make higher difficulties lower difficulty? Thats what lower difficulties are already for….??? :psyduck: Why is a wider range of challenge ever a bad thing? The games only a month old too. People are going to be on their knees begging for more challenge down the road.

If anything, what I’d really like is for them to iron out the consistency of each difficulty level across enemy/mission types, and smooth the stepping of difficulty between lower levels. 1, 2 and 3 are all pretty negligible but there feels like a pretty big jump after 3. I don’t feel like there’s really a comfortable mid difficulty or high difficulty option for playing solo or duos that hits the challenge level I’d enjoy. Especially vs bugs.

Gorelab posted:

I'm actually pretty convinced that the recoil level now is how it was supposed to be and they just undershot on the initial recoil number and how it interacted with the fire rate.

Yeah. It feels much more balanced and intended. Very viable still. I just wish I could erase the pre-nerf breaker and shield backpack experience from my mind. I would have preferred all the guns and support items to be brought up to 11 with them, but I understand that that’s not the tone of this game. I do still hope AR’s catch a buff though. I really loved the starting gun, but it’s just lacking the damage it needs to keep up.

I really don't feel any squishier than before tbh. It's confusing seeing others pretty upset about the armor changes. Heavy armor still isn't in a good place yet but I certainly don't think we're suddenly worse off than pre-patch? I think more tweaking is needed but I think that's already kinda what they said their intention is. As for armoured units, I feel like the only one that doesn't feel right is Chargers so if they change how they work I'll be happy. They just aren't very intuitive to fight, and their leg armor turning off during specific animations feels unintended. The bot armored units all feel like they're in a good place to me armor and health wise.

Happy that they're looking at spawn rates of heavies though? I don't mean for the highest difficulties, I mean for the lower ones. I had 2 bile titans spawn simultaneously seconds after we dropped on a difficulty 6 defence two days ago. One would spawn in to replace each one that died for the whole mission having two active at all times (we did not succeed). On a base destroy mission we had 7 hulks and 2 tanks waiting for us in a base all at the same time on difficulty 5 the other day (we did succeed that one and it kicked rear end).
Hard to see because I was being blown to poo poo but this was on a difficulty 4 escort:

I feel like that stuff isn't supposed to happen in mid-low difficulty. The balance of difficulties 1-6 has felt all over the place.

Aside from on defense type missions, 7 is currently just the right level of focus up sweat for me with 3 other friends if I want those purple sampies. I'm fine if they want to make 8 and 9 off limits to me unless I treat it like MMO raiding. It's their game and that's what having a range of difficulties is for.

Also fwiw, that blue light AOE for meteor showers is not at all visible in time on the surface of that moon like planet during "day" so uh be advised. That's probably where a lot of the confusion is coming from.

Tbh the bot berserkers just flat out have a lot of HP rather than armor so it’s not a good flamethrower matchup. It’s not just the flamethrower, even auto-cannon needs to two tap usually. My best success is unloading on their waists with whatever I have that builds up flat damage the fastest. SMG sidearm does that nicely. That seems to snap them in half pretty quickly compared to trying to land head shots under duress.

I'm starting to suspect people iit might be upset about the server issues!!

Joking aside tho I came in here to comment about how shocked I am by the level of overwhelming and histrionic toxicity being directed toward the devs over a single balance patch. We've had lots of (game)bugs and quite a lot of server issues, but people haven't lost their minds anywhere close to how much being told that the difficulties named things such as "SUICIDE" and "IMPOSSIBLE" were intended to mean what they said. Have people like, ever played another video game before?? Every youtube video I see about the game has the comments just flooded with rants about the balance patch. And equipment wise, breaker and RR weren't even nerfed that hard either. It's just buck wild to me which hill people are coming out in droves to die on, and how truly insufferable they are while doing it.

I see cool interactions like this from the CEO/devs

And I wonder how people can be such colossal dipshits to devs who seem to genuinely care about their game, when so many developers just dump their game out half finished and go silent for months. I don't want to come off as white knighting. I'm annoyed I can't play the game when I want to. Game has been kinda a mess. I am just genuinely disappointed in others though.

Not having to slow down or stop to do that is very valuable. The gun seems like a great option if you need to stay very mobile, which is a lot of the time in this game.

I’ve never not had it be based on the direction I’m facing as I throw it. It never matters if it bounces around, it always uses the initial direction I was facing as I hucked it to determine which direction they fly in from.

Also another useful note about offensive stratagems and enemy aggro that not a lot of people seem to know. When you throw an offensive stratagem, it DM’s every enemy in a mile your home address. Even if they don’t have line of sight on you. And when fresh packs spawn in and see other enemies in pursuit of something, they always join.

This might explain some of the complaints I see a lot. People might not understand they’re not just breaking stealth, but setting off a car alarm by hucking tha red beam.

I mean it’s got that spin-up before it starts firing. It’s small but it means you cant snap-shoot. Something suddenly in your face or bots /bugs calling for reinforcements can be a problem. Once it does spin up though it never stops killing trash. The up time is incredible. I agree it doesn’t need as many reloads as it has. They could cut it down to one or two and I’d still feel good about it.

Why not just not play 9s and play the difficulty you find fun? That would leave the top difficulty for people who want to play like that.

This has been confusing me since day one. I see so many people talking like the game is being/should be balanced for difficulty 9, and maintaining a “play on 9 or bust” mentality. The devs keep saying over and over they didn’t intend for this. Pleading for our understanding. Even going as far as to say they were horrified that people were beating and even soloing their hardest difficulty within the first week of launch. They’ve been clear that 9 was supposed to be a monumental challenge, like what static MMO raid groups take on. This is the only game I know where the majority of people don't consider the most extreme difficulty setting to be something reserved for masochists. 9 is two above 7 which is literally named “suicide” for fucks sakes. No one should be surprised when they keep adjusting things to push 9 further out of reach, but consistently seem to be regardless?

Like, I’m proud enough that my current level is being able to duo 7s when a friend and I lock it in and tryhard. I didn’t grow up playing shooters, I grew up on The Sims. I plan to try duo 8s tonight in an effort to unlock 9 but I fully expect it to go poorly and I’m fine with that. That’s what difficulty selection is for in the first place. 9 (and probably 8 if I’m honest) should be out of reach for me unless I practice enough to become esports tier, or hate myself more. I get that people probably resent the ego deflation after feeling like gods for making the hardest difficulty their go to default. Is that all this is though? Or is there something else to it? At this rate they’re going to have to give up trying to reason with the community and add difficulty 11.

Love to have this difficulty conversation re-ignited. First quote seems to not understand what is being said, which is that balancing to make 9s harder will have the knock on effect of making the rest of the game worse especially if its balance changes that affect stratagems or weapons. Telling someone to just "not play 9s" when they are saying balancing to make 9s virtually impossible would also make the rest of the difficulties worse is impressive missing the point.

It’s a bit moot on either side of that argument regardless because as far as I can tell the devs absolutely aren’t making gear balance changes with the goal being to make 9s harder. Seems like they’re sincerely trying to bring everything closer to how they feel weapons and stratagems are supposed to perform and function across all difficulties, and naturally promote diversity in player loadouts. They’re doing way better on this front than where they started.

Jerkface posted:

Now for the second quote. Lets just set aside what the devs have said about difficulty 9 and their expectations on completing the mode.

For the record, my mention of masochism and adding difficulty 11 was supposed to be tongue in cheek hyperbole. I figured if the devs intended 9 to be harder, it makes more sense this early on to just scale it harder. I had no idea helldivers 1 had additional difficulty levels added later. I need to process that for a while.

Lobok posted:

The number of player types that M:TG guy brought up might be excessive with all the Spike and Tommy and Angelica stuff but the goon who linked to it was right in that there are some player mindsets that are just not compatible. There's just always going to be people who argue a game should be made harder and people who argue the player can make it harder for themselves.

I don’t think either reasoning is necessarily wrong, so it’s just up to what the devs want for their game. They chose to take away the button. I think it should be noted though that you can increase the hardest difficulties for those who want that, and the players who would rather self impose challenges can do so on any difficulty they wan’t which kinda seems like an everyone wins?

Currently using a Dominator, which is adequate for the task, but wouldn't mind an alternative that trades the Dom's long-ranged sniping capabilities for better usability up close. If I need to snipe something, my cannon is generally good enough.

As someone else who favors AC, right now against bots I’m running Sickle and stun grenades. The sickle can mow the lawn of trash mobs better than anything else I’ve tried as long as you feather it a bit and get used to the wind up. It’s uptime from not needing reloads if you handle it right makes it feel really special. It can also focus devastator faces extremely well, especially when you end up too close to autocannon them. The stuns and extra grenade armor give you a solid way to deal with hulks and berserkers and buy you time to cool the sickle between berserker kills. Pick your poison on sidearm. I’ve been rolling grenade pistol because of the stuns, but it doesn’t feel good to me so I’m still shopping.

If the sickle doesn’t tickle, then maybe the Adjudicator? It still feels too thirsty for its mag size to me but everything else about it is excellent and punchy. Someone better than me can probably thrive with it.

And when you consider this games whole shtick, it kinda relies on keeping a large amount of their playerbase on that active schedule. Advancing a plot through interactive global events doesn't work if everyone pisses off until new content drops months later like we do in every other game.

To be honest, the huge pop up when I first launched the game telling me I needed to link a PSN account made no real mention that it was optional at the time. I nearly did so but figured out I could skip it by accident and told all my friends who also didn’t know that they could skip it. I bet there’s quite a lot of people who never even knew it was temporarily optional at all.

This game is rad as hell and I feel bad for anyone who thinks this is a big enough reason to quit playing it. A publisher requiring an account log in is obnoxious, truly, but also nothing new. Especially for an online game. I’m a firm believer in picking my battles and I’m super not interested in dying on this particular hill.

Edit: except of course for the people who live in places you cant make a psn account of course. I’m pretty confident that will be addressed somehow though. Arrowhead seem pretty responsive and earnest.

The game has been available in those regions this whole time until just now after large scale review-bombing and refunds. I'll admit I can't say with 100% certainty that they weren't always going to but I mean...common. Feels fairly likely they were going to leave it as it was and let people select closest country for PSN accounts because it's all money and number go up on Sony's end as people have pointed out.
