Game feels and looks good. Reduced load times from t7 are great. That poo poo was so annoying. I'm learning Azucena from scratch (obviously) since I have to wait for my main Eddy to join the cast. She's really fun to use. I need to delve into the specifics of heat more, I can't tell if I like the addition or not yet, it seems too easy to use and to last too long, but it's too early for me to tell I guess.

I only gave Azucena a quick lookover last night, So I don't fully get her. What's the move against her auto parry sass stance? Just Do A Throw?

Mids so while you could do a launch or a strong mid most people using her are gonna try to not be obvious about chilling in that stance (using moves that transition to it and not being in it for a long time) so a classic df1 would be a good option to check it, especially since if you misread her going into stance you're not very negative if you're blocked. Kinda like how people quick jab eddy to float him out of handstand before he can get going.

Her D 1+2 throw is absolute cheese while people still have no knowledge on her/vs new players in general. Fun to use. Long range high crush throw. It's called an imanari roll irl and i think ufo throw or something in game.

Two minor gripes but you cant select violet from the lee select screen like before and also the character portraits for everyone are really boring and limited compared to last version. Gonna focus hard on Azu for the moment but messed around with lee for a bit to try some acid rains and when he has heat the acid rain and mist trap dont need perfect timing! Kinda lame imo as watching lee specialists is fun but oh well.

Starting to flow with Azucena a bit. She's real fun, still getting used to what to do in the stances/stance switching though. I feel like knowing which each character can do in heatmode will be a pretty big early knowledge check its more variable and big than I initially thought.

That is a really cool detail.

Since you can always select P1 side some people are pretty scuffed when they are swapped to P2 mid match, especially at lower levels and especially for certain techniques (like wave dashing). If you notice this you can switch sides easily with your basic 2+4 throw. The basic 1+3 throw does the same damage but keeps sides the same.

I haven't had anyone DC on me mid match. Had some crashes trying to launch matches day 1 but thats gone now. People will occasionally alt f4 or shut off the console if losing a ranked match but it was rare in T7. Though in 7 I only played vs other xbox players. I have crossplay on for now but if I run into a lot of people playing on lovely pcs, alt f4ing a lot, or using macros then I'm turning that poo poo off.

His t7 full roster break down was the definitive one and honestly you could still learn a lot about what t8 characters are about from this one still for legacy characters.

I think the craziest thing so far is that I haven't played a single Law and I've already seen a Kuma. Maybe it's cause I've only been accepting 5 bar matches..... One of the big things I've always liked about tekken is the big roster and generally good balance + the fact that characters require a lot of dedication means you see a ton of different opponent characters each session. Playing SF6 it felt like 90% of my matches were against 4 characters and 50% of that was just against Ken.

People who main that character will naturally understand the characters basic frame work more and how to exploit it sinces thats how they lose. Been maining Azu but have been running through all the characters in Practice to see what they can do in heat and...... Xiaoyu seems really fun this edition. I used her a decent bit in T7 and the moves and setups came back to me pretty quick. She's got some really dope heat options so I think I might have to try her out for a few days. I'm having success with Azu but I feel like her stances are less coherent than others who are tricksters. Eddy flows very well for me and Xiaoyu also has more options and logic in her flow then Azu I think. Oh yeah, Xiaoyu had some kinda tricky combos and they made them easier (along with a lot of combos across the board which I dont like but alas) so she'll be pretty quick to pick up again I think.

as for combos she has a pretty good universal pickup option in (*launcher* df2 f3,1 RDS 2 RDS 1,4 wr3 AOP 1+2), which I think does 67ish? but her combo game is way more indepth in this game and still being labbed out, here's a video im studying right now that has pretty practical combos that go into the 70s

I used her a bit in TT2 also when that dropped on games with gold on xbox (online is still lively on xbox for that and t6 which rules). shaheen is definitely only still around because tekken likes to have a few simple "easy to learn characters" and to pander to Saudi. Literally everyone I've seen online groaned at his inclusion. Kazumi was a much better "beginner" character that had way better design and enough gameplay stuff going on to be fun to play.

Thanks for the link but yeah it's still early days on there just by looking at the Azucena guide. The BnB combo they list does 2 less than the one I learned off youtube 4 days ago and has less wall carry though its definitely a lot easier.

The one I use for the record is DF2- D2,3,- 4,- 4,1,2 (run to close distance) f2,1,4. The timing is a bit tricky though, I could explain if anyone needs it.

Do you have to do the D2,3, *4 super tight or something?

I wonder if I need to be closer when I launch or something? They end up being too low to pick up with the 4,1,2 after the *4

This is what it looks like in practice. SA doesnt allow .gifv embeds so you can click on that. Basically after the d2,3 you have to walk forward just a split second in stance before landing the 4 or the whole thing falls apart (so press and hold forward right after d2,3). It's really finicky timing but once you get it the rest of the combo is easy.
https://imgur.com/a/JKI3tDJ

What I started doing is noticing visually where the opponent was in the air consistently before throwing the 4. You essentially throw the 4 right before theyre about to spike the ground. Diagram below. Press 4 while walking forward at the moment the opponent is near that part of the juggle. Basically right as their head is touching the ground. You want to do it nearly as late as possible without the combo dropping. It's frustrating at first but itll quickly become muscle memory.

I don't think everyone speaking their own language is some clever trick, I think Namco just sucks at certain things. Irish characters speaking with English accents, iirc marduk used to have american VA etc. Tekken rules but everything namco does aint great. Fillipinos panned josies VA and Ive seen the same for Shaheen and his arabic which apparently sounds super weird.

Anyways Feng is badass. Definitely gonna be my main focus til Eddy. Also to any new players, he has a lot of great tools that you want in a character but also some really cool higher level slick stuff. A great character to pick up if you dont want to use a boring char like Shaheen but also don't want to commit to a very unique/weird character. Hes got a great i15 launcher, a great i10 punish, a great in between punish (b 1+2), an incredible list of pokes, a good backswing blow (bf1), Good plus frames (b3, ff3 etc.), and his two main stances (shifting clouds and backturned) both have armor now. His two main combo routes aren't that hard either. He ticks all the boxes of good tekken fundamental tools while also having a deep movelist and a lot of stances to play your own unique and tricky way.

When your character is missing a good tekken tool you feel it. For instance Xiaoyus pitiful i10 punishes or with eddy his terrible side step range and very little access to viable + frames. Oh and using Ganryu in t7 was real hard to grasp as he has no i10 jab.

I mean if you like the story thats cool, I just never care about them at all really. I think it took me like 6 months to check out the T7 one. Theyre always all over the place and arent really coherent entry to entry. I think other Harada reasoning at to why every woman in t7 looked 20 and you were unable to tell who was who if using default hair was that "nina was frozen cryogenically" and that Kazumi's representation in the game is from when her and Heihachi were young or something. That being said the jobbed out Eddy hard in his character story in T7 which was messed up.

I didn't realize b3 was plus. That's sick. Glad someone else is playing him. It's cool to exchange ideas. I really love the evasive poking style he's got. It's a natural extension of the kinds of characters I like in 2D games.

Did you play him in older games? Tbh I didn't even know who he was before 8.

b3 is a HUGE tool for him this year and it covers a lot of ground too. I played him to an ok level in 7. In 7 I had characters I mained for a big period of time (Kazumi, Negan, Eddy) and then characters I got to know alright (Ling, Steve, Feng, Raven) and then characters I got to know enough to have fun with(Lee, lei, geese, bryan etc). I technically played him in older games a bit, but that was after learning him in 7. Xbox had tt2 and t6 free with gold so I'd use him Eddy and other legacy characters here and there when I wanted to mess around with those games for a t7 break.

A general tip I'd give anyone learning a new character, or refreshing a new character is- Pin the full movelist and use each move in a row to see what they have, then do the same but have the CPU set to opponent actions-standing, opponent actions after a hit or block- block all. This will let you see what strings are natural and which can be blocked and how negative they are. Then run through the list one last time with CPU set to block all to see how negative certain moves are and to see where your good plus frame moves are. It sounds like a lot of effort but its really not.

Also db3 is great but his d4 is also a good poke when you're in their face and his b4 is a very very good poke, it's a super fast mid that cant be punished. I like to use the d4 a lot then throw out the 1+2 extension when theyve been conditioned to just seeing the d4. B4 is a good round ender poke when theyre super low health and have rage. You can mix that with jabs to get that last bit of HP.
