That might be the video that gives you the best impression just how fast top fuels are, holy poo poo. I’ve seen my fair share of TV broadcasts, but that is just another level. That thing explodes like a bullet out of a gun off the line, I guess the way NHRA is shot for TV rarely gives you that visual.

I used to put more racing on in the background when I was single, might have to do that while working at home more I suppose.

I prefer the behind both cars shots instead of from the side for the live and then sides for the replays if its a corker of a run. Shoutout to the fox camera guys. They're wearing tons of armor because of all the debris that gets kicked onto them at the starting line.

That's an absolute tire smoker of a run too. 303mph across the finish line is still bonkers to me.

I got to watch some dirt track poo poo, racing is back everyone.

This kinda "buy a beater trash it by the end of a week long tour" stuff would be cool to see at short tracks in the US:

Sidecar racing is definitely the most insane modern racing sport out there. Got a guy without a seatbelt or anything just jumping around the bike helping the bike turn faster and hoping he doesn't fall off or smack into something.

I kinda wanna do this in a figure 8 format but involve archery or spears somehow.

Gainesville opens the NHRA pro season(sportsman and whatnots have had divisionals already) this week. Headed down to the track today. Be sure to fire up the NHRA.tv app or check out our YouTube dispatches.

Speaking of divisionals, Dennis Bailey decided to test his roll cage engineering

the best live track commentary is is a pair of standups rehearsing material for a gig later that night. Or the times on NHRA.tv where the drags run after midnight and you can hear me shouting from the stands "JUST FUCKIN GO" because I gotta get up at 5am and do it all over again. Seriously, after 10pm staging battles should be banned unless there's a fuckin crowd. cut that poo poo out.

It’s a rainy Saturday at the Pomona WinterNationals. and I’m thinking about what kinda straight acceleration I could get from one of those formula E motors if I put it on straight rails. Ideally I’d like to put some noisemaker gimmicks in too.

Other things of notes:
One of the borrowed sportsman cars(car was rented from another racer) went into the sand trap and broke the nets. That’s a first for me. An old timer told me stories about how they had to improvise a net replacement one time because they didn’t have the right tools. TV didn’t catch it out of respect.

The loving sheriff department has a loving motorsports budget deep enough to purchase a cybertruck. And it fuckin stinks.

Road/oval? No noise sucks but whatever. I truly dont understand electric cars in drag racing. I subscribe to NHRA.tv, attend every local drag event I can, just a massive drag fan! and no noise/fake noise just absolutely murders any interest I have in the sport.

also those taxpayers need a new Sheriff if theyre giving him a motorsport budget and he buys a CYBERTRUCK.

yeah that's why I was thinking about installing megaphones so the drivers can talk poo poo to each other as they drag down. Maybe get extra points for good zings or convincing engine noises.

and yeah LASD is the largest publicly funded militia in the US. Its pretty crazy the funding they get when the fuckin roads never work.

oh no, I just wanna engine noises with my mouth over a megaphone while going fast because that would be funny. Going fast primary, funny secondary.

Other scratchpad idea was doing some kinda motion light show so I could spell out rude words like Bonneville or Pontiac.

oh its totally, cool. its car banter. And I'm waiting for the rain to break here in Pomona anyway.

I like EVs because they have positively absurd acceleration and the mechanics are deceptively unintuitive. Turns out 4 motors each attached to their own wheel doesn't automatically translate into 4x more power.

Right now its a smokey idea, but ideally I'd like to build an EV racing vehicle capable of matching the 300mph nitro classes. I have a test bed system consisting of a derelict lawnmower I'm in the process of wrenching off the engine and a shop vac motor that's going to replace it. This is clearly an extremely serious professional operation.

Professionally, there's been a few EV dragster attempts but the batteries are extremely temperamental. NHRA did a trial run 2023 in Vegas 4wide(it might have been 2022, these tours all blend together) and there was a cold snap that killed the batteries. People run rented Teslas in the street legal EV category. They never turn in real impressive numbers. There's room for a kit or bespoke EV build to really clean up if you can get the economics right.

Personally, I don't think EV dragsters will ever supplant a funny car. A funny car is a very specific spectacle. It slides, flames, explodes and takes a special mentality to master. But I have faith in humanity that EV dragsters will become their own spectacle if we can get sponsorships/grants lined up to support a comfortable living for a racer, 5 crew 2-3 support staffers.
