Narrativeball is the art of cherry-picking stats to make bad players good, or good players bad. Things like "Jim Thome struck out so much he was a net negative when added to his defensive liabilities" or "Rickey Henderson is the all-time leader in times Caught Stealing," clearly (and intentionally) ignoring the player's other contributions that far outweigh them. Craft your own narratives! Here's a few examples in video form: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0pqdGT32vk My starter example: Gary Sheffield is not only a HoFer, but an inner-circle Hall of Famer. Consider: Sheffield also had a 123 OPS+ from his age 35 season to retirement; Jackson 112 - an obvious compiler. Sheffield also has more walks and half the strikeouts of Jackson, in 300 fewer games. On every rate stat he has Jackson beat, but Jackson was a 1st-ballot HoFer with 93.3% of the vote. Sheff also played a premium position early in his career, vs. Jackson who had his glove hidden in RF from day 1. ------------ Gary Sheffield is not only not a HoFer, but we don't give Reggie Jackson enough credit: Among primarily RFers who have received HoF votes, no one has a worse defensive rating than butcher Gary Sheffield, who ranks last with a -27.7 dWAR. Meanwhile, Jackson's two WS MVPs and postseason success show he had whatever Clutch was, with a 63.3% cWPA to Sheffield's pedestrian 9.3%.
