Killer robot posted:That "A gallon of their blood for every drop of ours" reply to stories of Americans killed on 10/7 wasn't a policy statement, but it sure was a statement. And reminds me of lots of 2016 "Aww, it's just rhetoric, don't take it seriously" campaign promises he kept, like dropping more bombs than Obama and killing more civilians. I don't know if we can tell if he kept that last 'promise', because the first thing he did was to order the forces to stop keeping count of civilian casualties.

If every count of forcing someone to work on election day was punishable by five years in prison and a $500,000 fine i'll bet you'd see it happen a lot less. Would this mean that everything, including emergency rooms, closes completely for 24 hours? Why is that even necessary? Why not just make election more flexible so that you don't need to go vote on a specific day?

I honestly don't know which is a worse gaffe, mistaking Mexico for Egypt or Nikki Haley for Nancy Pelosi. The more important question is does it impair their decision making in any way. Maybe the debates should have a section where candidates draw clocks and name animals.

In fact this would be a lot cheaper to, build a wall across Mexico's southern border with US funds as it's so much shorter than the US border, and you can use cheaper work force too. also if you go with the galaxy brain "make a gigantic wall of old car tires that gather water and become nests for all kinds of snakes and other hazards", then southern Mexico is a much better place for that

And everyone carries a cellphone these days so you might get caught while attempting the first murder. It's hard to become a celebrated serial killer if they catch you before you get a good streak going, Netflix don't give participation trophies y'know.

rkd_ posted:They call it a 15-week abortion ban, but isn't this effectively legalizing abortion up until 15 weeks? That's more generous than a bunch of European countries. brugroffil posted:It would set a hard cap at 15 weeks and let states go lower Yes, the important difference here is that there is no European abortion legislation. Each country has its own laws. Now, the European Court of Human Rights has made rulings that have led to changes in laws that have clashed with the European Convention on Human Rights. But some countries have a lax abortion legislation, some very conservative, and it's not uncommon for women in some countries to travel to neighbouring countries to get the healthcare they need. Meatball posted:We can discuss having a European style abortion ban once we have European style healthcare. It's also worthwhile to point out that there is no European healthcare, each country has its own system. Though the contrast to US healthcare is obvious and people generally have the expectation that they deserve to have affordable public healthcare and get angry if it doesn't work that way. The well to do skip the queues and go to private clinics which are also part of the system.

Professor Beetus posted:I personally find it pretty gross that many countries in Europe apparently have a 15 week ban and feel like they should do better for their citizens. It's 12-14 weeks mostly, and it's more complex than that. For example, this is the rules in Finland: quote:According to the Law on Termination of Pregnancy (239/1970, Abortion Act), pregnancy can be terminated at the request of the woman up to 12 weeks of pregnancy. The request does not have to be justified. Criminal and foetal grounds are also covered if the pregnancy lasts up to 12 weeks. There's no hard ban, but 12 weeks is the limit for deciding on your own. Then you need to have some reason to get permit. Meanwhile in Malta abortion is always illegal except if you get three specialists to agree that a woman's life is at risk. Which is bonkers.

Barrel Cactaur posted:It's a bit of an oversight but often the only way to inform them is to walk out/drive, especially if their home office isn't open yet because it's 6 in the morning. Not necessarily a way to get a cell number or radio frequency on the spot. No way to do it without putting more people in harms way. There may have been several factors in play, in addition to what has already been mentioned apparently most (all?) of them were from Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras and El Salvador. So there could have been a language barrier if they got called by phone. Or it could be that the contact phone number was of the pothole repair company they were hired to, but the boss was sound asleep when his phone rang or there was some other disconnect in communication. Or all of their phones were ringing, but they had left them in the truck because it's wet and cold and boss had warned not to play with phones or they couldn't hear them because of wind and passing cars. It could even be that the traffic control didn't realize soon enough that there were workers on the bridge. So yeah, it doesn't surprise me that in the limited time they didn't get everyone out of there - the last car got across when the ship was already scarily close. There are things that can be learned from here for sure, though I don't know if container ships losing power and bulldozing bridges is a common enough occurence to merit totally new safety rules. But instructions for how to reach work crews in general should be checked.

The Artificial Kid posted:Descriptions of Havana Syndrome read like a checklist of “symptoms that someone might present with if their issue is primarily psychological”. This is made even harder to evaluate because humans have an innate tendency to mass psychogenic illness, so even if some members of a work community are having real symptoms of something external affecting them, others may experience MPI and it's very difficult to tell them apart if there are no clear physical signs.

Name Change posted:Trump is not on the same page as far right hawks right now, probably because Netanyahu dared to recognize Biden as winner of the election, never mind that Netanyahu openly endorsed Trump. Is it possible that this is more about Trump trying to play against congress passing any kind of bill for support for Ukraine and Israel and border, because that would be a 'win' for Biden? It seems like he only cares about Trump winning in November because he sees it as his only chance to wriggle away from facing consequences. For that purpose he would rather the congress do nothing, but maybe he has been warned that the Israel hawks in GOP will eventually yield to Israel lobbyists. The offensive coming to an end would reduce the pressure on them to negotiate with Dems.

I think it's wrong to say that Donald J. Trump and his type wants to ban abortion. He only wants power & money. Abortion bans don't affect the rich and their daughters and mistresses, so politicians are able to say things that they personally don't really support.

One thing about charging in garage that may make people change the way things are built is the fire risk. It's not actually huge, like I think that EV's have about the same risk of catching fire as ICE cars. But with EV's there's a heightened risk of it catching fire while parked inside or next to your house plugged to recharger, and when that happens there's no way of extinguishing it so if the car's parked next to your home it's not just all your property at risk, it's also the lives of your family. Insurers are going to start paying attention to this sooner or later, and that will reflect on how we build homes and garages. Maybe future houses will have a recharging pit that can be filled with water in emergency.
