The difficulty is about on par with part 1, but I can already tell that some of the intel requirements are going to be super obnoxious.

Also the combat got a lot less frustrating once I realized I could make right stick not swap targets!

The game wasn't very good about explaining the synergy abilities. Highlighting the tiny pips under the HP bars would have been nice, at least. Also having some of the super basic manual entries like status effect explanations only appear after you walk to Chadley and do the tutorial missions is sure a choice.

Throwing Tifa at birds is very fun. I'm looking forward to the FF7R2 versions of ridiculous Tifa combo videos.

Ok I literally just had to close the demo out of frustration.

Lock-on seems to not work right at all? Like I was locked onto an enemy and I start attacking with Cloud and suddenly I was attacking another enemy. That's now how it's supposed to work at all right?

I went into options > camera and changed Lock-On Controls from Camera Controls to Menu Controls & Auto Camera. This way, what you lock on stays locked, the camera follows it, and you can swap targets with left and right on the dpad. Having the right stick do both camera controls *and* target swapping by default is completely demented, and after years of playing XIV I can't not impulsively move the camera around during a fight.

Party members don't automatically jump, but everybody has at least an option for going up, even if it isn't always great. Have Tifa use her synergy attack with Cloud to throw her at flying enemies, Cloud can use ranged attacks while holding block. Red 13 can, uh, do spinny attacks I guess?

Well now I feel a little sheepish about swinging my sword around more uselessly than I thought.

I went into the boss of the demo with no foreknowledge, and had a pretty bad loadout as a result. Luckily Ramuh carried it for me anyway.. Hardest part of the demo was not letting the hunt #2 birds take off even once. You really have to dump a lot of damage into those shits to interrupt them, and they like doing it at the same time.

Is the Leviathan summon supposed to be in the demo if you have a Remake save, or is that just for the full game?

Thundarr
Dec 24, 2002

You can target both ways the boss can lock up a character and attack them directly to free them. One of them is hard to break without using ATB for spells, though.

The funny thing is Chadley has a synergy tutorial but the scaling is such that everything will be dead before you can build enough meter to use any synergy abilities.

MAI is quickly going to grate on me with her cheery comments about how I didn't quite get everything right, just try again!

Having weakened versions of summons in VR if you're a hunt completionist is an interesting incentive. The extra weak version of the summon fight in the demo is barely stronger than a normal encounter, but still gives you the VR mission reward for first completion.

I appreciate just how deep they go with the number of music tracks there are. Salmon gets a banger that only plays during his escort mission, when you beat Neil at QB he pulls out his guitar and has an entire extended jam, and even Kyrie gets her own theme song with multiple variations. I'm still waiting on a Ghoul phase 2 moment but I haven't finished the Junon area yet. The game just keeps flipping my completionist trigger.

It was very funny that in the demo, the "interrupt Soothing Wind" field report fight was obnoxious because you had to really go apeshit to pressure them (and even worse if they both started at the same time), but in the main game it just takes one Blizzard spell.

I'm liking QB more than I thought I would, though at this point my decks are still a bit limited (could use more cheap cards that attack diagonally forward) and opponents are getting smarter about not taking bait. Or doing the FF14 Triple Triad thing where you almost have them beat and then they have the exact card they need to completely reverse the game at the finish line

I knew that, what I didn’t understand is that id put an enforcer down to block one lane while I focused on something else, and sometimes it would last long enough that I could focus on the other lane long enough to make progress, and then on the next attempt, against the same enemies it would just instantly die.

The enemy units should be fixed for each stage (maybe changing a bit depending on difficulty setting?). Exact placement and timing of when you deploy a unit can affect the outcome though, like whether or not it gets hit by an AoE from a trebuchet. The really obnoxious part was even watching a video of a clear I had to repeat the stage multiple times due to units not doing the same thing because I was off by half a second or five feet.

I don't have an issue with having a ton of mini games in concept, though the way they're implemented does kind of make the game's pace more like "what even is pacing, anyway?"

It would be nice if more of them were 100% optional though.

I'm glad that running the hardest version of the parade doesn't require you to get a perfect score to get the award at the end. I biffed the last set kinda hard but I'm guessing a final score of 10,000+ is just enough to squeak by. No checkpoints so if I had to reset back to the part before the leading cutscene enough to get a perfect score I'd have lost my mind.

The game also isn't immune to horrifying ragdoll accidents. Sorry to the grenadier who I shot off a balcony. His body fell to the ground, but his arm got stuck on the railing was stretched out by about 15 feet.

I'm a bit confused still about how the points for weapon levels are actually accrued. In my game Aerith actually has the highest weapon level out of anybody, which is weird since she hasn't really been in the active party more than anybody else and definitely less than Cloud.

And if existing weapons gain material slots with levels I haven't seen that yet, unless it doesn't start happening until mid or late game.

Thundarr
Dec 24, 2002

Ok so weapon upgrades and SP actually are the same thing, and the game was just confusing me by treating them as distinct ideas.

I could swear I've never seen somebody with an empty materia slot yet and said "oh that must be from a weapon upgrade". But as usual I have a mind like a steel sieve so maybe I just slammed something into the slot without thinking about it.

Queen's Blood is cool because you can quick restart the match if your opening hand is garbage or if your opponent happens to pull some "you just activated my trap card!" poo poo out of nowhere. It would be nice if there were some more cheap cards with forward diagonals though, especially since it seems like NPC opponents get plenty of them.

e: it also helped when I realized the game has a list of pre-built decks that you can select once you have all of the cards involved. Just gonna chill over here, slowly deleting the other guy's cards while Midgardsormr becomes +12 by itself.

I finally beat Jules 57 to 49 (I lost my combo with 3 seconds left on the clock but so did he, I don't think he could have caught up even if he kept going). I did have to disable the adaptive triggers though. Now to move on and just not use the championship belt at all.

The Corel area really wanted me to collect a hell of a lot of zinc for item crafting. Is the game trying to tell me something about my diet?

And how far do I need to go into the game before I finally get a Revive materia? I'm finally getting good enough to fight the VR summons with the training wheels removed, but it can get rough if somebody gets nuked since I can't sit them back up with items.

Somebody mentioned that the hard mode version of Fort Condor gives you a key item you need for completion's / trophy's sake, but I just ran it and all I got was 5 party XP? If it doesn't actually matter for anything, then I guess its at least 5 party XP.

Hung out with Aerith at the Gold Saucer, relived our Corneo Colosseum date by beating up bosses ten levels higher than us.

There sure are a bunch of folios stashed in this place.

Just curious: if you happen to have multiple characters equal in approval when you reach a related event, how does the game break the tie? Is there an approval cap or is it always possible to do a few more synergy abilities to put one party member over the others?

Man, I'm having some trouble with the combat. There's so much to it, lots of stuff going on. I did that first mini boss or whatever it's called, the wolf you have to kill for the farmer. It absolutely murdered me at lvl 17 on normal. I could put it on easy, but I'd rather try to learn it a bit so I can dig into it and enjoy beating things up instead of button mashing.

For now I do have one question, I feel like I'm missing something. It has to do with synergy skills/abilities or whatever. So obviously there are the big ones you have to build up to, by using ATB chargers, you have to fill in the appropriate number of blue boxes on both characters. Seems like it takes a while to do, so probably more for bosses and other long/tough fights. I understand that. However, I keep seeing talk about using a synergy skill that doesn't cost anything and helps fill your ATB gauge? In fact, let me quote a random page

I don't think I've found anything like this. The only other thing I can think of, is I learned those non-mp using elemental attacks from the folio, but I'm pretty sure those use ATB. Am I missing something really obvious? If I am, that might partially explain why I'm getting beat up so easy.

Also, can someone explain parrying with cloud? From what I can tell googling(which isn't as useful as I thought), you just hit triangle(if you aren't in punisher mode) right as an attack lands and it'll parry? And if you're already in Punisher Mode, you hit R1 right as the attack lands, is that correct?

The synergy skills are used by holding block and pressing one of the four buttons. You can unlock different skills in the manuscript page, just like you can with synergy abilities. Some of the skills are a bit awkward to use, but Cloud + Aerith's Magic Sword is dead simple and can instantly fill both their bars if you hit a bunch of things with it. Other skills let you do things like have another party member teleport to Aerith to block incoming attacks.

Cloud's parry is basically automatic as long as he's in Punisher mode (press triangle) and holding block. You don't have to perfect time it, though perfect timing the block will also reduce the incoming damage to zero. Note that he can't counter (or block at all) ranged attacks or spells, it has to be something taking a swing at him. He also can't counter unblockable attacks.
