The Giants' projected 5th starter, Tristan Beck, has an aneurysm in his pitching arm and probably needs surgery. Now would be a cool time for them to sign Blake Snell.

Giants sign Marson Chapman?

our biggest need at this point was a SP but I'll take it!

I was whining about this in the GDT but it is maddening that I can't watch Giants spring training games. NBC Bay Area or w/e is broadcasting a grand total of FOUR games this spring: https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/jenkins/article/want-watch-giants-spring-training-broadcast-good-18698339.php. The last time they were on TV at all was the Angels broadcast a week ago

So they are going to call fielders for blocking the base this year huh?

https://twitter.com/SNYtv/status/1765884761799561462

I like this in theory but it would suck to lose a game because of a ticky-tack obstruction call.

Well that's one way to solve their too-many-infielders problem :v: Good thing they signed Candelario.

Lose to a player in arbitration and then cut them so that they don't have to pay? I don't think that's true.

I think it happens once or twice a year, yeah. First couple examples I found were Justin Grimm and Hunter Strickland

This is from Bob Nightengale so take it with a massive grain of salt, but if this is the asking price for Snell now then the Giants should sign him

quote:

The Houston Astros, who exchanged contract proposals this week for two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell, now appear to be long-shots to sign him. They have balked at Snell’s asking price of at least a two-year guarantee for $60 million, including an opt-out after the 2024 season. The Astros’ biggest concern is that they will be over another luxury tax threshold if they pay Snell close to $30 million annually.

Kyle Harrison went 5 strong innings today and has a 1.93 ERA this spring (speaking of totally sustainable stats). There will be growing pains but the kid is legit. Signing Snell should take a little pressure off him being the #2 starter too.

With Harrison and Jung Hoo Lee, the Giants have a couple of legit Rookie of the Year candidates. Been a while since we could say that.

Spring training is coming to an end and we pretty much know what every team's Opening Day roster looks like. Seems like a good time to look at some projections.

PECOTA:

Fangraphs: https://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=Standings ZIPS tends to be more conservative, and has the Braves winning 97 games and the Dodgers 93.

Random thoughts: I wouldn't be surprised by anyone winning the NL Central, even the Pirates. It's pretty funny to see the O's and Reds in 3rd place, with their endless supply of prospects. The Yankees winning the division seems contingent on Cole being healthy. Not sure I buy the Dodgers as a 100 win team this year.

I gotta wonder if this is the year the Rays magic runs out, with all their pitching injuries, and no Wander. Not sure if McClanahan, Springs and Rasmussen are expected back this year at all.

Paul Skenes will start the season in AAA. Pirates have him on the fast track. Drafted first overall last year, pitched in a couple games in the fall, and the word is he'll be up by July. The hype is off the charts right now.

The Giants should be interesting, at least.

They weren't bad last year! They were in the wild card until they faded in September. But we went overboard with the moneyball approach, and it was time for a change. Three-fifths of the rotation was opener+bulk guy. Zaidi notoriously hates big SP contracts, but you can only get so much out of Jake Junis and Ross Stripling. And the constant platooning was just too much. It's hard to root for a team where the whole lineup gets subbed in the 5th inning.

So for the first time in his 5 years, Farhan spent in free agency. But in a very Farhan way. No mega contracts, no Judge or Ohtani signed until they are 40. Instead we got a Cy Young and a Platinum glover... on short-term deals with opt-outs. A 25-year old KBO MVP... can he hit for power in MLB? A RP who throws 103 mph who we're gonna convert to a starter. And of course Zaidi had to make at least one trade with his buddy Jerry DiPoto, so we swapped Mitch Haniger and Anthony DeSclafani for Robbie Ray, who's recovering from TJS.

So this is what the '24 Giants look like:

Infield
C: Patrick Bailey
1B: LaMonte Wade
2B: Thairo Estrada
SS: Marco Luciano
3B: Matt Chapman

Wade and Estrada are Farhan reclamation guys, and they're OK. Luciano should be the opening day shortstop IMO, it's time to let him sink or swim. I already love Chapman's defense.

Outfield
LF: Michael Conforto
CF: Jung-Hoo Lee
RF: Mike Yastrzemski/Austin Slater

Lee had a great spring. So did Luis Matos, who might take over one of the corner spots if Conforto or Yaz sucks. Conforto exercised his option, and if he's ever gonna be the guy he used to, now's the time.

DH
Jorge Soler. Dingers.

Rotation
Logan Webb
Blake Snell
Kyle Harrison
Jordan Hicks
Keaton Winn

Holy poo poo we signed Snell lol. Alex Cobb returns by the end of the month, and Ray should be back around the ASB. Hicks looked great this spring. He hasn't succeeded as a starter before, but this FO loves tinkering with pitchers. It could work...

This is the year where the first big prospects of the Farhan era are key parts of the team. If Harrison, Luciano, Bailey, and Matos, not to mention Lee, can step up, the future looks bright. If not... sooner or later, Farhan will be on the hot seat.
