I'm partial to the old Broadway musicals with picaresque heros, like the The Music Man and Guys and Dolls. I think my favorite is How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying tho.

greetings sweeties, let me give you a back massage. for i am a whiz!

Les Miserables is the best musical. Movie sucked though, as do most movie-musicals.

If you're looking for good newer stuff, I saw Hadestown for the second time last night and that's some good poo poo

I mean there's a song about a wall that was so pointed it got people pissed off even though the song was written in 2010

bitch better have my chex mix

My boomer aged parents are huge musical fans and our VHS collection was full of them growing up. The ones I remembered fondly are Oliver, Camelot, Grease, West Side Story, but especially Fiddler On The Roof.

Fiddler is one absolutely unique banger after another. Every song is unique and thoughtful. The story is loving dire and the ending is depressing as hell. It's definitely the "not like the other girls" of musicals.

I grew up the son of a Baptist preacher in south Texas so I was definitely familiar with the basics of Judaism but we sure as poo poo didn't know any actual Jews, so seeing the rituals of the Sabbath and everything was very interesting.

Now I'm a father of two girls and after a re-watch last year I like it even more seeing things from the dad's perspective. He's constantly talking poo poo about everyone around him and I love it.

I love Hadestown so much! I've also seen it twice. Dying to see it on Broadway. Between Hadestown and Great Comet I think I'm pretty much ride-or-die for Rachel Chavkin at this point

This movie is so fuckin' good yall. Brian De Palma was busting out masterpieces at the time between this, Carrie, and Dressed To Kill. Also George Lucas made Darth Vader an homage to the Phantom in this movie, who has a talkbox on his chest.

:same: with my Boomer mom. My grandfather loved musicals, especially the 1950's movie adaptations of Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals and passed that love down to my mom. She loves all of those along with the ones you mentioned and more. I actually just found Brigadoon on DVD yesterday for her at a thrift store and she just about screamed. It might be her favorite musical of all time if Seven Brides for Seven Brothers never existed (she told me to keep an eye out for that one next lol).
