Game is growing on me as I bite into Arizona. The way you interact with terrain is very cool. Vehicles definitely seem to handle smoother than Snowrunner too.

I don’t know about this mission structure though. Like it feels weird to do a task or hunt for an upgrade since I’m on a mission? Saving that for free roam I think. Tho it hasn’t unlocked in AZ yet. Seems strictly inferior to Snowrunner open world style, idk, maybe I’ll change my mind if later missions are complex enough to make me think about my choices. The game doesn’t feel so much like it’s a “scouting game” as a small objective game.

Yeah the mission structure and the way that inventory works I'm not totally sold on. Always a bit confused if I'm spending money or not. The metal detector seems to point to a building on your base, and I already forgot which color is which. Plus it takes forever to use so I just don't.

I like the new maps though, and I like that that's more stone in general. The feel of rock crawling is quite nice

I need to work now but I had a pretty frustrating first session spent figuring basic things out. UI is a mess. Texture pop in is very bad on ps5.

Yeah that's how it's done. And only then will you get the credit for finishing the mission and sell your inventory, going back to base or recovering to base does nothing and it seems like you can't actually drive into the garage to finish a mission. Very unintuitive

They also automatically start you on some random base when you're doing a mission, NOT the case you actually need to start at. Which seems pretty dumb

In Arizona it is south-east of the map, right past the area where you found the camper of the scientist who got really high and got lost. I think it shows you where the exits are when you are choosing the mission, but it doesn't tell you which exit on the map it is. The mission screen definitely needs the ability to mouse over various POIs so you can see what they are.

The map is an absolute loving mess, I think the worst designed and buggy thing in the game. It's a bit bizarre.

Some examples: it doesn't always place you on the nearest camp when you're starting a mission. When you open the map it warps to POIs quite often, they might be for the mission you're attempting or they might not it seems but even if they are, it often pulls the map to wherever you received the mission rather than the target or, you know, just staying on your vehicle so you can find where it is? So every time I open the map I have to drag it back to where I need it after it pulls to another spot automatically. This also often happens when you press a on a POI for some reason. On missions where you need to go to a new area it sometimes does and sometimes doesn't show you where the entrance is. On some missions it marks finished objectives with a check mark but often it does not.

I'm truly amazed they made the map infinitely worse and less intuitive than snow runner.

Anyways, hope they fix that. Still enjoying the game but some of these things are very frustrating.

I have some questions: has anyone else seen three phantom upgrades in the carpathian mountains? It's on a ridge with a valley down below, the one you have to explore in an early mission. There are three upgrades that can be seen with the metal detector, but I don't think they actually exist. Been all up and down that area and the detector either points in random directions or points somewhere I've already been through multiple times from multiple angles.

Secondly, there's a mission in Arizona, unsuccessful geo something, to rescue the tank looking scout but I can't for the life of me figure out how. I could barely get there with a scout, I might be able to get there with the Acteon but there's no way I could tow that thing back the same way I came. Worst of all, it says to take the abandoned vehicle to 'a flat place' so it can be evacuated but the only quest marker is not even at the closest camp, it's so far away and I can't figure out any reasonable path to get there. Has anyone managed that mission? There is a yellow square near the vehicle, do I just need to get it in there then report back alone to the original spot where you can get the mission?

I’ve noticed the metal detector pop 3 upgrades often, when there is only one. It’s definitely buggy. Wouldn’t surprise me if there’s actually None sometimes.

For your second question: I don’t know that mission specifically but I think some of the rescue missions are intended to be hard. For example, the drowned truck in the first Carpathian map. I could barely budge that thing with the Acteon and the only routes I’ve found to the objective marker are ROUGH with anything other than a scout. I figured I need better or more powerful trucks. And a whole lot of patience.

I also couldn’t figure how to gas up a rescue truck so I could start the engine. Anyone know how?

I'm not aware of there being a way, thought that some engines are able to start and some aren't. I got the first downed truck in the Carpathian map if you're talking about the one in the crater? Wasn't too bad with some upgrades. Just make sure to check your upgrades on the trucks you use often, because sometimes they seem to come out of nowhere and suddenly they are available when I have no idea what I did. I assume I did a particular mission that unlocked them because it seems most upgrades are unlocked that way rather than in the field. maybe.

All the minigames in missions/tasks are a dumb waste of time and should be removed except maybe the "take a picture" one, which needs the controls fixed, sensitivity is way too high, not sure why it doesn't just handle like the binoculars.

Yeah I laughed pretty hard when I got the first one of those, all the ones before had been 'get all the fish in circular scans!' or 'hit a button when the moving point is between two lines!' in the easiest drat minigame on earth. Then I got to the photo ones, and was so frustrated because I did not realize very minor UI elements were turning green at first and thought you had to just guess exactly how they wanted it. And then with a zoomed in camera if you so much as tap the right stick the camera will go flying 90 degrees to either side.

I guess that's realistic with how a camera actually works, but god drat if it doesn't feel awful and it's not like the other minigames bother with realism.

I do like the game, but the UI, bugs, strange decisions and lack of roads kind of makes me want to play more Snowrunner than anything else. But I won't because I've already played too much of that game.

Also, is there any way to attach winches to particular points? It seems like there isn't, right? Kind of an annoying oversight since Snowrunner had that and it was a very useful feature.

Complaining about this game a lot but I still like it, just some really baffling decisions and oversights.

I'm a little confused about the airdrops. Do they just constantly spawn items to claim? So if you find the right one close to a camp you can just get infinite money?

Also, little tip. The specialists can be super useful, and they're not that expensive. Once you have more money than you need don't hesitate on those and the tools

Lol I'm just now realizing that the way the travelling between maps works you can't freely switch back to trucks you left behind in the other map without also being on that map with the truck you're currently driving. This all seems like stuff that can be fixed with updates but jesus this is dumb.

Why are you taking two trucks? Honest question, I've never done that before.

To do different objectives at the same time?

Another question: the tasks you can do piecemeal, which is really really nice. So you don't have to finish everything and can come back to it. Is it the same with the missions, can you do the first two steps then do the last two steps on a later expedition?

God it's so frustrating to nearly finish a mission and then run out of gas like fifty meters from the final point. At least the mission has an explore portion so if I do it again I can skip that step.

Also I kinda hate the thick woods in Carpathia. They are impenetrable with any vehicle

I think the push winch might be lowkey the MVP of this spinoff. Being able to rappel down cliffs or do the ol winch to a tree from the side to stop yourself from tipping move while also being able to extend it has come in handy more than a few times. I had to ford a river but before attempting it I throw down an anchor, winch to it, then extend as I drive so if it looks like I'm sinking I can just pull myself back. Pretty cool. Also the specialist that negates water damage is nuts. Been bringing that dude along to a lot of these early jobs in the Carpathians.

I really wish the drone flew faster and also gave you some sort of indication of what you've scanned for those 'explore this area' jobs. Or hell let me look at the fuckin map while flying the drone so I know if I'm even in the radius anymore.

Half the time the explore percentage doesn't even tick up for me while I'm in drone view, it only shows after I leave. And yeah, orienting yourself and trying to figure out where you still need to check is a bit dull.

A lot of things in this game are dull, tbf, but in a sense that's why people play it.

Free roam should be unlocked after completing the first mission in an area. It's dumb as hell that when I had an unfinished mission, I could go into a subarea and do random tasks or find upgrades or stuck trucks instead of doing the mission, but now that I don't have an unlocked mission in that area I can't.

At the very least you should be able to redo missions if you want to.

I just somehow managed to extract the AFIM S1960 with the Pug scout, what a wild ride that was. So down on power, the gas ran out in the truck I was towing which really sucked. I probably spent twenty to thirty minutes on the last incline because there was a goddamn horribly placed downed tree that it kept getting caught on.

Victory feels sweet though. I don't love the Pug, especially with the stock motor it seems really weak, but I havent unlocked the roof rack for the Khan Marshall. I really like that truck but not having extra gas and parts limits you so much.

I feel like this is one of those games that gets better as you play it. More options of stuff so you can do what you feel like, more information about the map, more trucks to work with.

I don’t have fuel problems with the Marshall. I use the high range gearbox. The roof rack means you can’t use the metal detector yeah? I still find too many upgrades.

Actually a complaint I have is on the need to use different trucks. Most expeditions are best done in a scout and so I’ll use the Marshall because it’s my smallest, nimblest scout. If I need to carry something, I’ll use the Acteon because it’s my smallest truck with a sideboard. Like I just unlocked the Ankh civilian and it seems like a powerful truck with tons of space… but I just don’t need that. There’s all sorts of repair attachments I can’t imagine using. The missions are about navigating tight or treacherous spaces, not hauling or repairing.

Unlocked the mission to unlock access to the volcano. Soon, I will see all of the Carpathians.

I use the high range gearbox as well. I feel like it's the best gearbox, even if it does get a little annoying switching back and forth when you stop or slow. Better fuel economy and better speed in easy areas is so nice. There are still some missions that are simply too long without bringing extra supplies, especially with bridges to construct, landslides to clear, or trucks to rescue. Especially true before I realized airdrops have fuel in them, of course.

I actually took the Pug scout out in the Carpathians, which is the big tank like scout, and it was better than I thought. Bigger trucks are better than I thought there too overall, since they can just run over all but the largest trees instead of needing to dodge all but the smallest with the Marshall.

Still really enjoying the game. Have a lot of game left, too. I've only unlocked one extra area in the Carpathians and two in Arizona despite playing for quite a few hours.

Is it normal for the third map in an area that in the first mission you need to start from the main map, go to the second map entrance, then go to the third map entrance?

I wasted tons of money failing at getting the big truck unstuck in Sonoran desert twice before I finally beat it. And it was just such a long loving mission, didn't understand why I couldn't start in Cocino.

Just spent a good hour on a Coconino mission, one of the ones where you have to haul that huge seismic thing around and there are no icons, only a distance to number. Got the first, found the second, then I went to install the portable rig and somehow it loving disappeared from my inventory. It won't let you start the mission without them, so where the hell did it go? Is it possible to lose or damage stuff like that?

So frustrating. That was particularly annoying mission, had to move two trucks all over the map because I didn't have one truck that could hold both the seismic and two portable rigs. I guess knowing where they are will be helpful assuming I remember, but man that stings and I basically ragequit.

The cargo drone is very nice, but don't try building one with no other modules. Trying to use it locked up my game until I built a warehouse and put a jack in it first.

Once it's working, though, it gives you access to the full base inventory from anywhere on the map. So no more having to bring out a second truck just to share resources.

I was wondering exactly how that worked, the description made it a bit unclear to me. That sounds pretty nice.

Also, unlocked the KRS 58 Bandit but it's very expensive, I'd have to sell the Step to get it. Is it worth it? I see it can take the seismic module so theoretically it could cover the exact same niche as the Step. But the Step going by pure stats seems a bit better?

E: Oh man I just figured out what I did wrong. My other truck was parked where the oil rig was going to go up so it wouldnt let me deliver it. In the middle of the day it was hard to see the orange lines on the orange rock. Of course I ended up doing the whole mission again before I realized but at least I got it figured out. Should've evaluated the situation better because even though you can't see the portable rigs in your inventory, you can see them in the truck trade menu. Plus the deliver screen looked different depending on whether you had a portable rig or not, it just wouldn't let you deliver. A little message like 'Rig site blocked' or something would be pretty nice there, but still pretty much my fault.

I rescued the Tatra FORCE and it was an epic pain in the rear end up there with the best Snowrunner missions. I had to abandon my initial route because it involved a steep hill I was never getting up. The most difficult part wasn't even the trees or rocks, it was navigating those tiny bridges with two big trucks. I used 3.5 full tanks of gas.

Our trucker heroes were in most dire straits at this point:

You can only sell trucks in the garage (triangle on ps5). To make this more confusing, you can't access the truck store from the garage so you have to swap views to buy and sell. I don't have the bandit but I think it can take the seismic attachment... you can see the icon on the store screen. I know what you mean re: expensive. I thought I was beyond money mattering but the Tatra FORCE was 300k! I had to sell the Afim.

Indeed I figured out how to sell trucks, but yeah it's confusing. I'd have to sell the Step to get the Bandit atm but not sure it's worth it. The Step has better base stats, plus I have a lift kit for it where I don't for the Bandit (at least it lets you preview upgrades, that's nice). The Step has been a pretty decent workhorse so I'm loathe to get rid of it but if the Bandit is good poo poo I'd be down.

As for your mission, that looks brutal. There seems to be a bug with some or all bridges where you can keep putting parts into them, at first I was hoping that if you put enough parts in it would make the bridges wider and stronger but nope. Sideways across a bridge with a huge truck hanging off the back by a winch is like the most FUBAR situation I can imagine in this game.

e: Just realized the AFIM can also take the seismic so now I can choose between the three I guess.

Trip report: the Bandit is fantastic for bridging the gaps so common in Arizona due to four sets of wheels. But, due to having two sets of turning wheels the turning radius is absolute garbage. Decent truck overall with good power and towing capacity.

Also I've come to believe that the Acteon with the best tires and a lift kit might actually be the best scout in the game despite not being categorized as such. Easy to take extra fuel and parts, good ground clearance and traction, small enough to navigate right spaces. Especially really long missions it's excellent.
