It's actually quite remarkable how it looks and sounds almost exactly like a period drama produced in Japan would (but higher budget than it would be if it was a Japanese tv show).

Usually a show produced outside of Japan wouldn't feel like a Japanese period drama even if they put effort into accuracy and there weren't any specific language issues or anything like that.

Agreed. FX/Hulu deserve huge props for adapting it.
