Jaeluni Asjil posted:Oh god don't. One of my PhD examiners had a real bee in his bonnet about that and I had never given it much thought before and one of the corrections I had to do was go through it finding every mention of data and change to datum if singular. Out of my two examiners, one gave me just a handful of 'corrections' and the other about 5 sheets of A4 and it was all punctuation and formatting apart from one small section where I had used bullet points and he told me to rewrite it as a proper paragraph because 'bullet points have no place in academic work'. Fortunately I think some journals are being less pissy about it these days. Thinking about corrections on a PhD thesis still gives me sweats, my examiner offered me the choice of submitting with minor corrections or go back to the lab to get a bit more data. I eagerly took the first option, I was so done with it by then.

kingturnip posted:It's a bit mean-spirited, but I'm thoroughly enjoying the stories of people who looked at their expired passport and thought "It'll be fine to go on holiday with this", only to find out [shock] that it wasn't fine. I actually upset my wife a bit yesterday as we were discussing this and she'd misinterpreted the story and somehow thought you needed 10 years left on your passport to go to Europe now, and I was just dumbfounded at how the story could be so badly mistaken. For the couple in the news recently, their problem was that pre-2018 passports have an extra 9 months on their expiry date, but the EU won't let you in if it was issued over 10 years ago (even if the passport says it's valid). So the error is slightly more understandable but anyone travelling with less than a year left on their passport really should be checking before they travel no matter what. And also renew sooner to get that sweet new passport colour, of course.

WhatEvil posted:I had a car insurer - 1stCentral - somehow manage to open 2 separate policies for me on the same car, with wildly different start dates. I spoke to them a load of times wasting literally hours on hold, was assured that it would be closed, that they would stop asking for money, that it was definitely dealt with this time... until I got a letter from them saying that if I did not pay it would be sent to bailiffs. How long ago was that though? As an organisation that can hold shifty businesses to account, it's unsurprisingly been pretty neutered in recent years

Literally from one paragraph to the next: Schools must be allowed to decide what's best for children. Also, schools should not be making decisions for parents. That's on top of "This government is banning too much stuff, which is why I applaud the decision to ban Muslims from praying".

Not that they would explicitly tell anyone that themselves, though...
