I don't think that's the case at all. Election day is commonly referred to as polling day. You go to your local polling station on the day of the election and cast your vote in a polling booth. The terminology is and always has been interchangable.

Failed Imagineer posted:Man Holyrood just looks so much nicer on TV than Westminster. Westminster must stink of centuries of foie gras fart I can't believe just how bad it looks. Brexit debates also showed there isn't enough room for all of them.

Basically as above. Their government has been working hard to rebrand over the last decade. There still seeming to be internal ethnic issues and the whole UK deal isn't exactly helping, I feel.

radmonger posted:Not defending Musk specifically, but the general American understanding of Irish politics is something like that the evil British unconstitutionally banned guns. So Michael Collins heroically crossed the Liffey, formed the IRA, and won the battle of Derry Town. There is just an annoying remnant to the North still under British occupation that they will get around to liberating any day now. Not sure about your own experience but I've lived in the USA and Canada and this is not my experience in the slightest. People aren't well educated on the topic of Ireland but when they talk about the IRA they are referring to the contemporary groups or the organization as it existed from the Troubles to the GFA. I recall shocking a few people when I told them the IRA existed before the 1970s.

Jel Shaker posted:so is the idea that the local labour volunteers will go out and canvass for her? because lol imagine having zero self respect (i bet they do it) I think she is stepping down at the next election so she won't be a Labour candidate. The situation is still poo poo and shouldn't have happened but it's doubtful any volunteers will have to support her.

It is interesting as a showcase of how language changes over time and how popular shows can influence slang outside of their cockney origins, but as a front page story it was *farttttttttttt*
