interestingly, no, in those cases the word "anything" is actually just not considered a negative polarity item.

that's right, they're using it for emphasis

a similar effect can be seen with the negative polarity items "anywhere" or "anyone"
we would say "I went nowhere" and "I didn't go anywhere" but also "he could be anywhere"
similarly, it would sound odd to say "I saw anyone" but not "it could be anyone" or "I'll punch anyone I drat well please"

this is why in the OED you'll see a separate "without negative" bullet point

now you might be saying, "hey, cubone, what's this about indicating a range?"
