The Thaumaturge is a 'story-driven RPG with morally ambiguous choices'. It features a unique magic system built around the concept of the titular magicians, and their ability to see and interact with Traces, Flaws and Salutors, terrifying creatures who prey on human weaknesses. The game takes place in the very unique setting of early 1900s Warsaw, then part of the Russian Empire. The people clamor for independence, and the socialists fight both the occupiers and the privileged classes for rights. The city is riddled with corruption, but is also dealing with the increasing onset of modernity.

The game uses a turn-based combat system, with you and your salutor of choice battling groups of enemies. There is a timing bar, conditions positive and negative, and health and focus levels.

The main draw is the setting and story, however. The choices are very much morally ambiguous, and I don't believe save scumming is possible here. So they are genuinely difficult to make in many cases, and the best outcome is far from clear.

So far I'm pretty impressed. The story and setting are big draws as I expected. The combat isn't anything to write home about but is engaging enough as a change of pace. The music is fantastic. The graphics are great. The performance is okay for what it is, with some rough transitions upon changing areas. The voice acting... is mixed. Love Wictor Szulski's VA, some of the others are a bit questionable. Especially since they contain all kinds of random accents, would've much preferred all Polish or Slavic VAs where in reality there are a bunch of American accents.

Mainly I just wanted to make this thread to see if anyone else is playing this game, and what people think. For such a story driven game it's best to be cautious about spoilers, but I did want to ask how people handled the first situation off the train, after Tsar Nicholas II's speech. I didn't really mean to but wanted to feed my Flaw of Pride, and ended up fighting the gendarmes and going to jail. Curious what happens if you turn in the lady or the worker's leader though.

Im having a blast with this 4 hours in, it's got the good jank feeling that The Witcher 1 had on launch, reinforced by the extremely wide range of voice acting quality. the music is fantastic, really appreciate the variety on display from track to track

the click when you use perception is such a satisfying noise

It really is. I would say my one complaint relates to that though. It has this faux-investigation quality to it but really you click and it leads you to the next thing, you look around for an item to feel up and then it draws conclusions for you. You don't really DO anything but follow along like you're watching a movie.

Therefore, the combat and dialogue options are the only true interactivity. So a game like this trades mainly on its setting and story, and I feel like they knocked that out of the park. Whenever I'm tired of intense games I love to boot it up and just follow along with the story to see what happens and meet all these great characters.

I REALLY wish they had gotten all Polish or Slavic voice actors though. Or at least British, all the terrible accents of my fellow countrymen really take me out of the experience. The only one where it made sense was that hilarious dude at the train station in the middle of loving nowhere, Poland who took a wrong turn somewhere on the way to Albuquerque.

Glad other people are enjoying this game too! I really like devs who explore new and unique settings, and I've got to say Poland in the early 1900s is absolutely fascinating, even this very video gamey version.

I'm not far, but really enjoying it. Love the setting. I agree the accents are constantly all over the place, even if the actual acting is good.

Is anyone else using a controller? It's handled pretty well.

Yeah I'm always on controller no matter what game unless it straight up won't work. Even BG3, so with this game which is pretty simple it's no problem at all
