Vampire Panties posted:All of these have been using NLP for a decade+ now. Yup. That's the thing--any use case that people bring up for the current generation of AI are things that already have had AI tools for years. Your more self-aware techbros will try to hedge their enthusiasm by saying generative AI will be good for filler or background details, but movies have been doing AI-generated crowds for 20+ years. Whatever actual use comes out of the current generation of AI is going to be incremental, not revolutionary.

kdrudy posted:To use it in a way that makes things better you already have to be an expert in the field you are using it for so you actually understand what "better" is. The best part is that even if you don't use AI generation yourself, increasing amounts of AI-generated garbage output are making it harder and harder to find accurate references online. This was already happening before the current AI trend but it's rapidly accelerated since then.

cumpantry posted:i love the ai thread here in GBS where prompters post dozens of ai spawn past each other for pages at a time. is there any more damning parallel to art as a commodity being unable to settle on just one? When the new language and art models were starting to make a splash someone pointed out that part of the reason they hook the people they do is that they're a natural Skinner box. The jank is actually part of the appeal because of the excitement of hitting the lever over and over again until you hit the jackpot. Which is great as a toy, not so much for being useful or productive.
