Microsoft has used .docx for over a decade which is ISO/IEC 29500 which has a covenant not to sue over any patent licensing? The last update to the standard was over 7 years ago, so it is probably more stable and readable than any open-source document format.

I remember people in college like 15 years ago laughing and referencing XKCD and I just kind of stared at them blankly like 15 years later, I'm still staring blankly

I met a girl at a con afterparty last year who worked in the sciences and also worked as an illustrator for some XKCD YouTube explainer thing, and that did seem like a cool pop-science thing. XKCD is still a huge red-flag in a person though.

I thought the xckd guy died or something huh. I know he was all the rage when I went to uni, and I didn't mind the comics at first until I realised people weren't interpreting it as exaggerated nerd tendencies/personalities but as an okay and good and humourous way to talk to people in real life. I can ignore a three panel stickman comic if it's tedious and has too much word, can't do that to a person. Also lol "open source violin" doesn't make any sense, that is the real joke  Lol Edit: I'll even add lmao

They're AJ Soprano spouting facts about DNA at the dinner table.
