It's not the same, because I already have good gear/levels and don't get to have fun making a new character and pawn appearance.

And the reason I said it's a blessing in disguise is that it's probably for the best that I stick to this character and actually finish the game, instead of burning myself out playing the first 10-20 hours multiple times across several characters.

Also got a nice escort mission from my beloved asking me to take her to the exact same location I just ferrystoned away one minute ago

I stumbled on NG+ way earlier than I thought. I was down to play a little until I realized that nothing grew in power with you and everything is basically trivial on the second go around. I even hosed off to the harder areas just to challenge myself and found it a somewhat lonely experience because no quests seemed to be triggering (I left the main quest on talking to the guard dude at the inn, before he asks you to do combat in 3 areas).

Overall it was a pretty lonely sort of game for me. I didn't expect to be transported to a hellworld and I had a lot of stuff left undone before that happened. Then, I made the decision to focus on red beams thinking I could do other stuff once I got em all. Nope!

Anyway, long story short I basically did no quests in this game beyond the main one. I mean, like, actually none. I never visited the elf area, never saw a sphinx, never really met any notable characters at all. No one flagged me down! I had no markers and heard no rumors. Game was just... over. Then, faced with having to slog through the MQ all over again, this time without any challenge, and I just quit.

Anyway, they gave one class a spammable AoE invulnerability bubble, and you don't have to be a genius to figure out that's a stupid thing to do. Stats stop mattering! Health? Knockdown resistance? Damage? Who cares. I beat two red beam dragons standing in place spamming a single button while watching streams. I had 3 thief pawns crawling all over them, permanently invulnerable, hacking away at their bits. Dumb.

I was so excited for this one too! Coming off FFVII this is a beg letdown.

Will probably still come back for the DLC though because I hate myself

Game is dope, most refreshing thing I've played in years. I constantly have a big stupid grin on my face while playing, jank or no.

My current setup is Warfarer with 3 thief skills (skullsplitter, draw and quarter, implicate) and the holy staff for heals, levitate and killing undead. Switching implicate for high frigor for aoe is probably a better call, but the rope is just too much fun to get rid of.

The thief smoke bomb is also crazy good, cheap stamina cost, comes out quick, and basically acts as a soft stun in a big aoe

Finished this game last night. Explored almost everything and leveled most vocations to max. Overall I like the first one more, but I still really enjoyed my time with DD2 despite its clear flaws. Started up a second playthrough and am looking forward to a potential expansion.

Things I liked compared to DD1:
- The world is obviously much larger which is a huge boon to a game that's trying to give you the vibe of going on a journey to reach distant places. DD1's map was insanely small so this is a very welcome change. Substantially more variety in environments, and it looks nicer too.

- As oddly endearing as it was having pawns all say the exact same poo poo all the time, I love that they have different, distinct personalities this time around. Makes each one feel much more unique. Straightforward Male, Calm Male, and Simple Female are my standout favorites.

- You can't ignore the max hp degradation system by using basic healing consumables anymore which makes that system work much better.

- Pawns in general are far more competent. They feel like useful party members rather than portable storage units that draw some enemy aggro. They're also occasionally valuable for their guidance, which was a system that existed in 1 but never seemed helpful there.

- Some positive vocation changes. Warrior got a huge glow-up. Mage being much more distinct from Sorcerer is great. The casting changes are nice in general, giving you more agency over what you're doing while casting a spell.

- While I'm a bit iffy on one aspect of it, the lategame overworld stuff is much cooler than DD1.

- The pawn inclination system is fine. This is an immense upgrade over the previous iteration which was completely insane.

- Being able to customize your gear a bit with different types of smithing upgrades is nice.

- Warfarer is awesome.

- Sphinx is also awesome. Best character in either game by far.

Things I didn't like:
- DD1 was not a hard game, but 2 is WAY too easy. I stopped having to really engage with enemies at all pretty early. They just fell over dead instantly and it was a race to get some hits in before my pawns murdered everything. I didn't even understand what a lot of enemies and their variants did until I installed a mod to make things 3x more durable (and they still died very quickly even with that enabled).

- Super rushed story. Somehow even more than the original. You've got the introductory stuff which I think lands poorly thanks to half of it being told in flashbacks. It's impossible to care about the supposed quest to reclaim your throne. Then you get to Vernworth and do a bunch of errands running around town for Brant, which appears to exist to set up future characters. Seems like this Queen Regent is going to be the new Duke, yeah? I'm sure we'll be seeing her a bunch. Just kidding; these town errands were actually the bulk of the main quest and none of this is particularly relevant. Go to the end of the game now (which was better, at least).

- Too few enemy types for a game of this size.

- Too many annoying bullshit quests to talk to people back and forth across the map. Give me quests to slay monsters or explore places, not this garbage.

- The map is larger but I don't like how it's laid out. Would have much preferred more open spaces rather than pathways flanked by a billion little plateaus. Feels a little more natural in Battahl, but I really hate it in Vermund.

- While some of the vocation changes were positive, I'm not keen on others. A lot of my favorite skills are missing/changed and I don't love their replacements. Archer feels very hollow. Casters are far too limited by 4 slots.

- While I guess it's not that much of a negative since this sort of thing wasn't in DD1 at all, the caves dotted around the world are unbelievably half-assed. Every single one is just a featureless, pitch black stone tunnel. Really needed a few different tilesets with different enemy types, like you'd see in Elder Scrolls.

- The Everfall in 1 kinda sucked so I figured they'd improve it. Nah. Just isn't here at all, and no BBI either. Game desperately needs challenging endgame content to spend some time in.

- Augments have so little impact that they feel worthless, which is too bad because I quite liked gunning for those to make a build in 1.

- Music is incredibly forgettable. The only good track is the one they stole from the first game, and even that one was made slightly worse.

On reflection, my innkeeper pulling a houdini is more of a straw/camel's back sort of thing. Sorry for getting a little mad. I do appreciate the game has a way around these unfortunate happenings. It's odd that they knew it could occur and didn't necessarily fix it from happening, but instead added a workaround that suffices. However, I'm fine with that and think it's valid. There is just so much like that here that needs a little reflection to get why it is that way, I suppose, and it'd be nice if it were more like the first game where he just warped back if you threw him in the brine.

Also has anyone been able to buy/sell with a Hawker pawn? I set mine to that because he's Patches so it makes sense, but talking to him at camp never brings up an option to hawk anything.

I think some pawn personalities just sit down sometimes and that's not necessarily indicative of the plague. My calm inclination pawn often scolds pawns that are sitting down.

On the other hand I did run into a pawn that was actively complaining about the orders I was giving and I dismissed her right away.

The Straightforward ones can be pretty sassy at times. If they catch the mystery disease it might be hard to tell unless you know their repertoire of lines well.

My supposedly Calm pawn is more of a fussy busybody instead, she would scold me for going out without a coat when it's cold outside.

Finally took down my first drake, and ended up using two wakestones in the process. I was a mystic spearhand, which I thought would make it easier, but the bolt didn't seem to slow it down much, and the animation lock on the spear attacks got me in trouble several times. I neglected to take the actual projectile weapon skill, and so a lot of the time the drake was airborne was spent trying to air dash toward it and whiffing.

I'm close to level 10 on mystic spearhand, so I'll probably go ahead and max it out, but I don't think I'm going to keep using the vocation. Something about it just feels kinda clunky to me, like the skills don't synergize well or something
