Will the bow require shooter style aiming or does it support lock on style combat? Or both? I'm not personally a fan of shooting with a controller, but I definitely want to play a third person action game with one. This is sort of the problem I have with GTA and CP2077, where I want keyboard and mouse on foot and a game pad in a vehicle.

Cool, thanks. ,I saw Austin occasionally aiming the bow in a way that looked like third person shooting, but I suppose it also had a healthy amount of auto sim; it was more like placing a huge magic circle crosshair anywhere on the enemy.

Is anyone in the larger gaming world taking commissions to create sliders for people? I tried to make Eivor Varinsdottir from Assassin's Creed: Valhalla last night night and I can't quite get there, she has a rather uncommon face for a lady protagonist in a video game, I don't think I'm ever going to get it right.

If not, I've got several more days to keep poking these sliders, maybe when I get home I can share some screenshots and get some feedback; I'm finding it's kind of like trying to draw, it's funny how hard it is to actually identify what's wrong - are the eyes the wrong shape, or is it the cheekbones, or the brow, or all it together, etc.

I hear you, it can be really irritating when you see that little chunk of heal missing, but camping looks like it's going to be incredibly cozy, like in ff15, with tons of gorgeous food, so embrace it

They also have fast travel, it's just diagetic. The reality for most players after the first hour is going to be running up to the wagoneer, hammering the accept button to start the riding sequence, then hammering the "shut eyes" button to prompt the fast travel.

In other words tom waits voice why walk when you can ride?

I'm kind of picky about my fantasy aesthetic and I'll need to see if they have some smaller two handed weapons, otherwise I'll have to pass on Warrior, and I definitely want to be an armored martial character, so my options are limited.

TBH I don't use lock on in FromSoft games either, at least in melee, because you can move around and redirect swings easier without it

Owl Inspector posted:

There are cases in DD1 where playing a melee or non-hybrid class makes your group mostly or entirely unable to kill something, which absolutely sucks and there’s more cases it can happen than a bunch of posters in this thread are implying, but it also specifically only happened because the pawn feature shipped without AI so they wouldn’t kill the thing that you needed them for. if pawns now understand things like “use ranged attack on thing too far to melee” and can actually cover for your own class’s limitations it will be fine

I reinstalled DD1 a couple weeks ago, got to the harpies in the canyon, and realized 1) I'd bought skyward slash instead of cymball call and that was The Wrong Skill for this, and 2) my mage pawn wasn't going to fix this for me.

What would y'all think about switching to your pawn like the newer FF games or Genshin Impact?

I had to jump ahead to the present in this fast moving thread because I've accumulated some questions/problems I could really use some help with.

  • How to deal with stun lock as a fighter?

I'm about level 8 in both Fighter and Warrior and I'm having a hard, hard time getting Fighter to feel good, it's only such high level because I want to like it. I've recently reached Battahl and the "knacker" goblins can knock my rear end up and down a hillside, never giving me a chance to get back up. Even if I perfect parry the first one, I can be hit out of my follow up "execution" animation after pressing Y. This just isn't a problem with Warrior, who seems gets hyper armor and hyper poise.

  • Do I need to save any "valuables", like Jasper?

I did hold on to them for a long, long time, worrying they might come in handy, but when I reached BakBattahl and had sticker shock with the prices I finally let them go.

  • Tips on Mystic Spear Hand?
I only dipped my toe into it and it was a bit like Fighter where I felt to vulnerable for a melee character (I find the two toughest characters are warrior and, ironically, Thief once you get the dodge toggle skill.)

  • Have I "missed" Magic Archer somewhere?
I don't need to hear anything narratively specific, but I've reached BakBattahl and if someone could tell me whether I should just remain patient or whether there's somewhere I should back track to, I'd appreciate it.

Eh, I'm 40 hours in now, and I just spent a few minutes watching two rock golems and a pack of knackers all chain stun/rag doll my character the entire fight, and I hit that point where I realized this isn't actually fun. Just watching my character get hit, get knocked down, take a l o n g t i m e getting back up, just to have another enemy come in from off screen and start all the bull poo poo over again. The fights don't feel harder in Batahl, they just feel more frustrating.

I'm sitting here in Bakbatahl with a "quince", but I need to turn in a "ripened quince" (ffs, but whatever). Do I need to DO something, like camp or sleep, to ripen it, or can I just chill out here and have it happen in real time?

Just doze off on a bench several times and don't have the augment to make things last longer or else you will need to doze off for like a week instead of a couple days.

This and dismissing the logistician pawn let me eventually complete the quest, though it took maybe a dozen dozes, which is way too much. Thanks though.

I have another question/compliant: I double checked that the pawns I hired had "Quest Guide: NO", and here this rear end in a top hat is, pestering me about leading the way. Is that trait on a quest-by-quest basis? I'm going to dismiss this rear end in a top hat ASAP and grab the first person I see on the road.

EDIT: I can see in the "status" page that the pawn has Quest Guide: YES. So either it's changed or I was just mistaken when choosing this archer.

Fighter finally clicked for me when I started using the skill that charges up a counter attack. Fighter has several skills that do some variation on "absorb incoming attack," but THIS one will also one shot trash mobs in a broad swathe.

Basic Chunnel posted:

The majority of combat is very reminiscent of DA:I in its alternation between chip DPS (passive combat) and cooldown-limited spike DPS (active abilities). Because of the way that design works, spending time on anything but attacking and using abilities feels wasted — like in DA:I, things like effective positioning and maneuverability are for the most part governed by active abilities (if they’re offered to your vocation in any meaningful sense beyond charging to the closest enemy).

What you're saying here jumps out at me because I've often taken a moment to reflect on whether or not I'm playing the game correctly, and I do this when I'm literally taking a moment; I play DD2 by spamming abilities and then when my stamina is low I just stand there and I don't use the basic attacks, I just stop moving for a couple seconds then do it again. I pointedly do NOT spend any time with the basic strikes because doing that greatly reduces your stamina regen and my intuition from playing the game is that it's better to just get the bar filled back up ASAP and launch another series of abilities.

In fact, I'd basically say I have three kinds of fights in DD2:

Easy:(oh look, a pack of goblins) a dismissive spam of basic attacks because it's fun, feels good, and nothing else is needed. This works especially well as warrior because the wide horizonal swings of the fast attack will absolutely mulch anything that doesn't have a boss health bar. If I'm an archer or a fighter I might have to spam some straight foward ability, but I'll kill the whole pack before I run out of stamina and this requires absolutely no thought or planning.

Medium (most boss monsters): I'll burn through my stamina spamming abilities and then stand somewhere safe (moving as little as possible because this also slows stamina regen) before doing it again.

Hard (boss monsters that are beating my rear end): As medium except I'll pause and eat stamina roborants so what's actually happening in the game is an unending chain of abilities.

So basically, exactly like you say, I never waste time in basic attacks in any "serious" fight.

EDIT: Oh, also, as warrior my go-to spammed ability also produces "knock down", so I don't even have to do any thinking when I see the enemy stagger. I use knoll-breaker until they fall over, and then I use indomitable slash on their head when they're knocked down.

This frickin' pawn, I overburdened myself with crafting materials and in the ~10 seconds it takes to reach a vendor it took ALL of my materials and redistributed it to it's inventory. But I can't sell it from the pawn's inventory! So now I have to tediously reassign them all! No, no, no, no.

I was on a quest to escort a comrade somewhere The Mystic Spearhand maister to some place east of the checkpoint town when it suddenly tells me I've failed the quest and promptly auto saves. God damnit game, it was a loving cake walk, a day hike, a pleasure stroll, what did he do, throw himself off of a cliff? If he'd died I could have used a wakestone, it's so frustrating that the game (probably in a bug) arrives at a fail state and then immediately saves.
