I've been off the past couple of days so I've been just eating this game up, so far some basic observations are the thief lasso ability is extremely good since when upgraded it pretty much yanks everything to you where you can execute it almost immediately.

Initially I was kind of worried about not having range on the thief but honestly you just don't need it with the lasso.

The skyward attack for warriors is almost a guaranteed knock down if you hit something big in the head with it

The warrior downward attack that you get when you're just standing on a monster as opposed to clinging is also extremely powerful if you do it on like their head or whatever.

Also, something that's just very funny is if you use the radiance augment from ranger, everybody shields their eyes when you walk next to them with the lantern

Not sure if some of you haven't figured it out but you can use a health item when you're definitely dead if you're fast enough on the trigger, like game over isn't instant.

Been ranking up spearhand and I'm not sure I like it too much, sometimes abilities just don't do any damage, which seems like it might be a bug. It does have a very fun movement attack tho that really, really shines in Drake fights, and a way to instant stagger regular sized guys.

On the side of something extremely funny happening I found a shallow cave in berttal and something like 12 lizards clown carred out of it. At the time I was still spearhand and got to force throw like 5 at a time into other lizards. Very niche use ability though

The AI is pretty good, my main gripe is pathfinding can be very bad with verticality and they can get literally stuck. Fighter is pretty fun, and perfect blocks can make some fights go much much faster with the opening it can make

I hired a fighter that was so extremely squishy I had to fire it because my sorcerer pawn could take a hit better than it, pretty sure it's bc the pawns owner went for looks first.

you can do that with a warrior just make sure to be in standing animation on them instead of clinging then you can stab them in their vitals in a brutal downwards stab with a huge sword. really the only reason to cling is climbing or using the thief cling-specific skill. the game makes you a bit stickier than you might think when standing on guys so you simply dont get tossed at every opportunity, like i stood on this dragon's head for a good long while giving him an intense acupuncture

VVVV

i find spearhand's range stuff to be somewhat annoying to use since it's either a charge up (albeit fairly strong, like the magic burst attack) or somewhat underwhelming like the little magic darts, the force throw is very fun when you have stuff to throw and does fairly good damage. a good half the range stuff i use on spearhand is the R1 ability

Bandit, goblin, lizard thing, harpy. Oh wait there's "slime" also. And 3 "big enemy" types, cyclops, bull thing, ape thing. It's starting to get boring.

I just changed from fighter to warrior. Warrior is novel and fun but not a long term thing for me I don't think. Throwing haymakers and knockin poo poo doofus is great and all for a while, but it's too slow and unreliable. You have to commit to being immobile in a location for a while and the game is full of fast moving enemies which just gets frustrating. I think I'm close to unlocking Mystic Spearhand though, which is what I'm looking most forward to. Maybe that will spice the game up enough to carry it.

Overall the jank is interesting and gives the game some color and character that I think is missing from a lot of modern games, but sometimes it's not so much jank as it is "stuff missing that should be there," like lock-on or a way to separate "healing items" from everything else in the inventory, etc.

Jury is still out on what I personally think about the game, but people making comparisons to this and Elden ring are loving high. DD2 is absolutely nowhere close to ER's quality.

That's great news! I'll just look up how to do that. Thanks!

do you use barge on the warrior and are the only attacks you use charge ups? there's specific places those are geared for and warriors have more than charge up abilities, on bargain bin goblins and bandits a barge and an overhead chop will lock them enough to kill them. as far as the lock on goes i dont know, i dont think it needs it - what part of the lock on do you like in something like elden ring? the game is pretty smart about using the sticky soft-lock on it has and warrior charge abilities can be redirected if a monster moves to the side a bit. you can also use goring charge on the warrior and you basically just run at them and can pin them to a wall and doesnt have a charge up period. i think approaching it like a fromsoft souls game is a bit of a mistake that some people are making

warrior takes some getting used to but honestly the biggest thing for them is There's a Time and a Place. their basic attacks are very strong, not everything needs a savage lash

Elden Ring is a great game, but like someone else said, it feels like "DS but open world" pretty much exactly. The interactions with pawns, how incredibly dynamic and emergent the combat feels in this game, for me personally, is far more engaging than ED's combat and world design. The dungeons in ED are def better, but then you get to the end of it and have a corny repeating fight with an enemy that doesn't feel interesting to fight anymore.

I could fight chimeras in this over and over. In ED? There's maybe a handful of enemies I found consistently fun to re-engage.

fights are definitely more memorable because action-y moments happen where you remember it a bit more than dodge rolling through an attack and hitting a basic R1 or whatever, stuff like climbing on a medusa and impaling a giant sword through its head are more common. being able to do stuff like unbalance a cyclops and push it over with some pawn help are pretty neat touches. i've got my gripes about the game tho but i feel they've been stated and in general dont stop me from enjoying the majority of it

I always try to have a mage around though that specialty just eats away healing items needlessly too often. Honestly think I might just go forager if I can get it since it doesn't seem to have a downside besides not being very useful in the first place. The woodland one seems good but afaik I need to trek somewhere specific I don't technically know about yet and also literally don't know where it is, and I'd rather just keep playing naturally as I go, kind of the charm I can go dozens of hours and have just avoided the specialization quests so far lol.

Also did I hear you can get the specializations from rented pawns, if so, how, I don't know how to make them like me to give it to me.

it involves doing their pawn quest and the pawn owner offering a scroll inclination as a reward iirc. basically you have to look at the pawn quest rewards
