Hopefully I'll be done with FF7R by next week so I can devote all my free time towards climbing up monsters and throwing goblins off of cliffs.

Avoiding the min max in DD1 was pretty easy, considering it's a game where you can play a bunch of cool vocations and min maxing requires you to just not play them for dozens of hours, until there's basically no game left to play. Great if you love being an assassin, not so much if you'd rather play as something else.

It's a Berserk reference. They're directly modeled on the rape trolls. In DD1 they focused on female characters, and their butts and cheek turned bright pink if they saw one.

iirc the elder trolls in BBI were horny for guys instead.

I'm glad early reviews are making it sound like exactly what I was hoping for. Less than two days to go before it's time to fly into free once more.

Did they shore up the inventory system or is it still a giant mess of items to dig through when you're trying to figure out how many of one specific rock you have (that looks like every other rock)

My first beloved was Madeleine, which was fine to be honest. On that run I had no idea what the ring even did and I never gifted it, so it just went with the merchant I did the most business with. I thought it was a good pick mechanically but didn't learn until my next run that she'll show up in Cassardis post-game anyway.

Also on that first run I never even knew Aelinore existed because on my way out of the castle I jumped the bannister rather than walking down the stairs, so her cutscene never triggered and I guess she died off screen two seconds after I left the castle grounds without talking to her.

Looking forward to some more janky rear end unexplained systems that break without you ever knowing they broke.

I appreciate that the default pawn quest is "travel a day with this pawn and get a wakestone shard", which means it should be easy to get a stock of wakestones early on.

I do some sidequests in Melve, then finally tell the captain ok lets go to the capital.

So I follow him, and he goes in a loop around the road that takes us right back to Melve about 30 minutes later, then runs off down the same road he started on to begin with. He probably thinks he was getting back at me by wasting my time like I wasted his, but all XP is good XP I say.

Do pawns update their level / equipment / skills on the network when you visit a rift stone, or only when you pay to stay at an inn? I wanna say I remember rift stones working in DD1 but I'm not sure if that works here too.

Explosive arrow rules. I basically one-shot the first story relevant cyclops by knocking it off balance, then the pawns and guards just swarmed and murdered it before it could stand up. A shame that using the ability at all requires consumables but I guess it'd be a bit too powerful otherwise.

Archery is a lot better here than in DD1 overall, since there's a degree of auto tracking for basic attacks so you can safely plink away at fast moving targets even if you're poo poo at stick aiming. And when things are held still for you, you can still do massive damage as always. Also you can fuckin' drop kick dudes if they try to rush you.

Some elf told me to teach him how to shoot a bow. Sure, I says. Out west past the mine.

As I head there night falls, and while I'm looking to make camp a minotaur crashes out of the underbrush and one-shots two pawns and drat near kills me. After circling around to rescue the pawns and retreat a few miles down the road, we make camp and try again during the day.

The minotaur is still there, and chases me another several miles down the road in the wrong direction from where I wanted to go.

Monsters are fuckin' scary again, man.

Any recommendations for archer skills? Dire Arrow and Explosive Shot both kick rear end, but everything else seems meh?

I went with Barrage and Keen Sight and their upgrades. The first will basically one shot weak enemies with no fuss, and the later is ok for opening a fight with a sniper shot. I switched to mage after maxing archer, or I'd have swapped Spiral in for Barrage.

So if I'm understanding pawn quests right, I could, say, offer 15k for a ferrystone and go afk for a few days, and as long as I'm not unlucky I could come back to a dozen ferrystones for paying 15k once. Or if I'm unlucky only one person gives one to my pawn and I basically blew a decent chunk of money.

The most obnoxious thing I've had a pawn do so far was point out a chest on a ledge higher than I could reach. So I used the Go command to leave them to it, and they levitated over to the ledge. "See? Easy as that!" And then they... jumped down from the ledge without opening the chest. I had them do it again and once again they jumped back down without opening it. And this is a pawn that normally kleps everything in within half a mile that isn't bolted to the floor.

Also quest guide pawns need to chill out with trying to lead me to quest locations on the far end of the map. Yes I know it's over that way, yes I can see the map, you don't need to be so snippy if I don't take the specific fork in the road you were going to use.

Speaking of the map, anybody else wish the marker for the player was a bit more visible? It blends in very easily with roads on the map so sometimes it takes a while to pinpoint myself even when the map is mostly centered. Surely they could just make it bright blue or something.

Always use those aged beefsteaks at camp, much better than forgetting and letting them go bad a day later.

Give your pawn a quest that encourages people to use them, even for just a little while. Like rewarding a lot of gold for a relatively easy thing like killing one ogre.

If you're still hard up, sometimes the ghosts near the elf town at night drop rift crystals as lootable items.

Other than that, it's kind of a crapshoot. I've been trying to tempt people with pawn quests with limited success, but maybe I should just put something even easier to grab than flowers for stupid rewards?

I think if you request a gifted item and offer a big reward, there's a good chance people might hire your pawn only long enough to gift the item. Good if you want lots of that item, but not if you want rift crystals.

A monster hunt mission means they'll at least be hanging out with the other player for 10-30 minutes, or longer if they're doing a good job (or the other player is too lazy to constantly swap pawns, like me).

And of course the usual suggestions of "this pawn actually has all their abilities set and reasonable gear for their level".

It's helpful that escort mission NPCs will join you on oxcart trips, so if the far away place they want to go is close to one of the oxcart hubs you can just fast travel. I assume ferrystones bring escorted characters along too like in DD1.

Looked around for a fourth entrance but can't see anything.

I've done the quest there and found the third entrance/exit if that matters.

If you go up to that door at night, some skeletons may spawn on the other side and break the door down for you if you give them the chance. It's what worked for me. I have no idea what the "correct" way to get in there is but going through it opens up a shortcut between the forest and the Melve area.

I'd like to play the archer more but what's putting me off is that you have to buy the special arrows. It kinda creates a feeling of "do I really need to use this outside of boss battle" and if I don't, then I have two skills to use in regular combat (currently dire shot and upgraded barrage). Maybe that's it. I also can't seem to pull off the special jump backflip attack, my guy just does a high kick like in Mortal Kombat instead of the backflip if I press Y/Triangle.

I've been able to craft all the arrows I need and more just by picking up flowers and branches (and turning rotted food into lantern oil). You'll only run out if you go really nuts with specialty shots.

The kick flip shot is cool as heck when it works, but the over the shoulder camera angle can sometimes make it hard to judge your distance to the target. If you don't actually hit them with the running jump kick, you can't back flip off them after all. And it does have to be a running jump kick, not just the thrust kick you do from pressing triangle by itself.

I've obtained three port crystals so far, spoilers if anybody is really struggling to locate some. Don't read if you prefer solving puzzles yourself though.

1) look for an elf by the weapon store in Vernworth. He wants a bow. Give him any old bow, then do several follow up quests, and after you help him save his sister talk to his dad to get a port crystal.

2) the Sphinx (north-ish from the border crossing town, fort above the ancient battlefield, through a cave above and behind the fort) Riddle of Madness. Bring your beloved to answer the riddle and get a port crystal. The item from the Riddle of Eyes helps If you don't set up a teleport right to the Sphinx. If you have no beloved I think your main pawn works.

3) the Sphinx Riddle of Conviction. Hand her the port crystal you just got from the Riddle of Madness when asked for your most valuable item. She'll give it back and dupe you another.
