There was that time that David Brin was being such an insufferable sexist douchebag to Jo Walton at a con room party that she threw her coke on him:https://ansible.uk/cc/cc138.html to posted:'Well, OK. I did pour coke on David Brin's head at the Tor party. And he deserved it. And it was impulsive and intemperate, and I'm intending to apologise for being impulsive and intemperate, just in case he thinks that I did it because we have a substantive argument about feudalism, Tolkien, the Enlightenment and Romanticism. In fact, I did it because he was being so smugly condescending and patronising and sexist that I couldn't stand it for another moment. I do disagree with him about those things, and I think he's wrong about them in really irritating ways, but I'd have been quite happy to either let it go – we'd disagreed about them at length on a panel earlier in the day – or argue about it in good faith. I'll argue about things with anyone any time. It was his tone that caused me to completely lose it.

I haven't heard anything about Bradbury personally but he acted like he didn't understand why anyone would have a problem with harassing and groping women; Bob Packwood thanked Bradbury for supporting him during his difficulties. On the other hand, Lovecraft and Robert Howard were just creeped out by sex. I haven't heard any sex stuff about John W Campbell but he was a huge racist who also opposed government regulations and supported crank science and quackery (he was an early follower of Dianetics). When writer Jeannette Ng won the Campbell Award for Best New Writer, she spent her acceptance speech blasting Campbell and calling him "a loving fascist." The award was renamed and the separate Campbell Memorial Award was discontinued completely. (Unfortunately Ng supported the Hong Kong protests so you are required to hate her.) Maximo Roboto posted:Walter M. Miller. Jr. (Catholicism) I remember a sequence in A Canticle for Leibowitz where a priest tries to convince a woman who's dying of radiation poisoning that's it's better to die slowly and painfully than to commit suicide. You get one guess how Miller died.

Did John Norman of Gor ever do anything irl to anyone? All the threads I've see say he was a nebbish English professor(?) who added the porn and bondage because the books sold immensely more when he did so, so followed the money. These days he'd just be one of 1000's of authors on a porn blog site or paetron with less funders than Sinfest. Same question for Heinlein. And we did get the first Starship Troopers movie that made fun of the books politics. To add to the list of Authors who DID do some awful things- David Eddings and Marion Zimmer Bradley . lol speaking of david eddings i was recently thinking about what if they made the belgariad into a tv show, imagining the pitch like "okay so all of the characters are white, except for the bad guys who are inherently, racially evil and also mongolian/asian"

I finally read through Starship Troopers on a flight after first starting it back in... Junior High? and mostly was surprised that the bugs have guns, what the heck Also seems fairly drat fascist (shocker) and it's like 40% extended boot camp hagiography and 40% talking about made up military theory ad nauseum so it's not like there is a ton of action either

The Oldest Man posted:were you surprised when johnny rico busts into a third alien species's pta meeting and firebombs it no, it's part of the opening sequence I read as a kid which btw suggests a lot more action than the book actually contains, probably why I didn't get through it back then. badass speculative fiction shoot 'em up dumps you right off into 100 pages of meandering boot camp ideology sludge
