Early on, Donnie had to escrow money into an account for a lawyer to agree to represent him (if I recall correctly - $2m). But as he's paid $76m for lawyers, all out of campaign/donor money, it's pretty clear he's willing to pay them and not stiff them... until the donor money runs out.

I'm perfectly ok with him draining the campaign warchest on legal fees instead of actual campaign things. Every dollar he spends is one that can't be spent for down ballot candidates.

He's willing to pay because the lawyers required a pre-paid retainer to represent him because they are shockingly not dumb enough to ignore the endless lawsuits by people against him for not paying them.

They won’t go to the crusher, they’ll be salvage titled and sold to idiots on the internet that will make videos about how their 5k Ferrari California had massive electrical issues.

It's even dumber too! The Senate had this deal sent to the House: all Ukraine/Israel/Taiwan funding, plus the border provisions.

The end result is going to be the House converting $10B of Ukraine economic assistance (non-military) to a loan and stripping out the border provisions. The freedom caucus was offered 90% of the loaf, demanded 100%, and will end up with 0%. Eventually Johnson got sick of it - Republican leadership might even change the Motion to Vacate threshold later today as part of the rules committee action!

Honestly he's going through what I have thought for years should be a standard practice in this country: you start a war, your kids (or other family member) get immediately drafted. Not a commissioned position, enlisted.

Make them put some skin in the game, then see how high they wave their banners.

Honestly I think the freedom caucus crazies are the ones who are done. Pretty clear the moderate, chamber of commerce and nation defense hawk republicans (what few are left) of the republican party have been fed up with them for a long time, and I think the 'likes trump in public but doesn't actually love trump' middle of the party (and it's crazy that this is now the middle instead of the insane fringe it was 8 years ago) has realized it's not winning them any votes to continue being the do-nothing congress. Maaaaaybe they've finally decided to ignore the screeching lunatics and let them yell in their corner by themselves?

Unlikely, but a man can hope.

I would love for you to be right. That said getting rid of the speaker is far far easier faster, simpler and going to play for getting votes from the base base of all of the freedom caucus folks back home. How much of their campaigns are funded by Russia should be something of interest. Other than that, they don’t care about the country only visibility and power which they get to keep if they stay in office and removing the speaker for supporting Ukraine is the easier path for them.

Better, he actually hurt his own case. It's apparently common for the prosecution to give the defense the first three witnesses they're going to call. Prosecution said "uh, we're not doing that because *gesticulates wildly at Trump*". Leading to this exchange:
