Felt it out in eastern Long Island. The whole house was creaking.

And being long Island, everyone is blowing this away out of proportion because they have nothing better to do with their lives

What difference does the depth make for an earthquake?

The one that hit Washington in 2011 was a 5.8, which is the last one I felt.

It makes a difference in how it's felt and the damage it can do to buildings

A 5.5 at 100 km down is nothing. We can't feel it and without science we'd never know it happened, and it happens fairly frequently. A 5.5 at surface level can shake the hell out of buildings that aren't designed to withstand the movement and damage them, and possibly collapse them in certain situations

I went through Loma Prieta as a kid, albeit I was at soccer practice and far enough away that the damage was minimal. We didnt know anything happened until one of the kid's moms showed up screaming about how San Francisco was in ruins.

my parents came home from work like nothing happened :thanks:

When we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change.

Felt it in Queens. Both my cats freaked out. A plastic cup on my counter fell over. I thought at first the construction workers next door had really messed something up but then I realized and ducked under my desk. The shaking and rumbling lasted about 5 seconds and then there was another 10 seconds of shaking.

Now sauntering to the ring, please welcome the lackadaisical style of the man who is always doing something...

We had one in Kansas back in 2016, I think? It was the first one we had in something like 100 years. There were some people at my office at the time who were freaked out so bad they left like an hour into their shifts and didn't come back until the next day. I mean, I get it. The first earthquake I experienced scared the hell out of me, too.

A few years ago we had a small quake in North Carolina. A few of us stepped out of the office and looked around and went "Huh?"

I think it knocked over a few jars of Duke's mayo but that was the extent of the devastation.

It's basically just like, if the wave has to travel through more poo poo. Ya know, like when you shout at someone far away, the sound waves disperse, and they can't hear you so good. When you're close, the waves don't disperse as much, so you are loudly shouting at them.

I'm sure there's more complicated components and poo poo but that's the basic idea.

its pretty weird that there would be such a powerful earthquake at such a shallow depth. :foxnews: said the most powerful NJ earthquake was 5.3 in 1783 or something
